1. Assessment Overview |

The WJEC Music specification is assessed through three components. Component 1, Performing, is worth 30%; candidates submit at least one solo and one ensemble performance, with a combined duration of about 4-6 minutes. Component 2, Composing, is worth 30%; candidates create two compositions, one responding to a set brief and one free composition. Component 3, Appraising, is worth 40%; a written listening examination tests the four Areas of Study.

The four Areas of Study are: AoS1 Musical Forms and Devices, AoS2 Music for Ensemble, AoS3 Film Music, and AoS4 Popular Music. Across all components, examiners reward accurate terminology, secure score reading, and the ability to describe how musical elements create effect.

Component Weight Main Requirement
Performing 30% Solo and ensemble performance, 4-6 minutes
Composing 30% Two compositions: one set brief, one free choice
Appraising 40% Written listening examination on the four Areas of Study

2. Elements of Music and Listening Vocabulary |

The elements of music are the basic building blocks used in every listening question. You should be able to define and identify pitch, duration, tempo, dynamics, timbre, texture, articulation, and silence. These terms help you describe what you hear and explain how a composer creates a particular mood or effect.

Element Meaning
Pitch How high or low a note sounds
Duration How long a note or rest lasts
Tempo The speed of the beat
Dynamics How loud or soft the music is 力度:声音的强弱
Timbre Tone quality of an instrument or voice
Texture Number of layers and how they relate
Articulation How notes are attacked, such as staccato or legato
Silence Rests and pauses that shape phrasing

3. Reading Notation and Score Skills |

Candidates must read treble and bass clef confidently, including ledger lines, accidentals such as C♯, D♭, and F♮, key signatures up to four sharps or flats, and time signatures such as 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 6/8, and 3/8. Interval recognition of major, minor, and perfect intervals is frequently tested, as is chord labelling using Roman numerals.

Score-based questions may ask you to name notes, describe melodic movement, identify cadences, recognise texture changes, or comment on the layout of a piece. You should also be familiar with graphic scores, lead sheets, and basic tablature because contemporary and popular music extracts sometimes use these formats.

4. Rhythm and Metre |

Rhythm describes the pattern of long and short notes and rests over a steady pulse. Common tempo terms include largo, adagio, andante, moderato, allegro, and presto. Changes of pace are indicated by accelerando, rallentando, and rubato, so listen for whether the beat stays strict or is pushed and pulled for expression.

常见速度术语包括 largo(广板)、adagio(柔板)、andante(行板)、moderato(中板)、allegro(快板)和 presto(急板)。速度变化由 accelerando(渐快)、rallentando(渐慢)和 rubato(弹性速度)表示,因此要听拍点是否严格稳定,或是否为了表现力而拉伸。

Tempo Term Approximate Speed 中文
Largo Very slow and broad 广板
Adagio Slow 柔板
Andante Walking pace 行板
Moderato Moderate speed 中板
Allegro Fast and lively 快板
Presto Very fast 急板

Rhythm vocabulary also includes syncopation, dotted rhythms, swing, backbeat, polyrhythm, and cross-rhythm. These terms are central to popular, jazz, and film music questions, where the groove or off-beat energy is often the key feature to describe.

5. Melody, Harmony and Tonality |

Melody can move by step, which is called conjunct motion, or by leap, which is called disjunct motion. It is often organised through motifs, sequences, ostinatos, and ornamentation such as trills, turns, mordents, and appoggiaturas. In the exam, describe whether a melody is stepwise, ascending, descending, scalic, or angular, and listen for sequence or imitation devices.

Harmony is created by chords built from the scale. Primary triads I, IV, and V dominate tonal music, while secondary triads ii, iii, vi, and vii° add colour. Cadences are perfect V-I, imperfect ?-V, plagal IV-I, and interrupted V-vi. Modulation, pedal notes, and chromatic harmony are expected terms in higher-level responses.

Tonality may be major, minor, modal, pentatonic, or atonal. Harmonic and melodic minor scales are especially important for understanding chord changes and written notation. Candidates should identify changes between major and minor and describe the overall key centre with reference to the section of the piece.

6. Texture, Timbre and Dynamics |

Texture types are monophonic, homophonic, polyphonic, heterophonic, and antiphonal. Monophonic means a single unaccompanied line; homophonic means a melody with chord
