IGCSE WJEC Music: Key Points for Experimental/Practical Assessment | IGCSE WJEC

📚 IGCSE WJEC Music: Key Points for Experimental/Practical Assessment | IGCSE WJEC

In WJEC-style IGCSE Music, the non-written practical assessment is where many candidates gain or lose crucial marks. This component usually includes performing, composing and, in some centres, experimental or technology-based tasks. Understanding the exact requirements early can reduce stress and raise the quality of your final submission.

1. Overview of the Practical Assessment |

In WJEC music qualifications, the practical component usually carries a substantial weighting, often around 60% when performing and composing are combined. The remaining marks come from a listening or appraising paper. Practical work is normally marked by your teacher and then moderated by the exam board, so consistency and clear evidence matter.

You should check your current specification carefully, because the exact number of pieces, duration, and permitted technology can change. Some centres describe experimental work as part of composition, while others include a separate music technology task.

A typical practical portfolio includes at least one solo performance, one ensemble performance, and two compositions. Keep a log or diary of all rehearsals, edits, and feedback to prove that the work is your own and has developed over time.

2. Performance Requirements and Repertoire Choice |

Choose repertoire that shows secure technical control rather than the hardest piece you can barely survive. WJEC moderators reward accuracy, fluency, and clear musical intention more than difficulty alone, so a well-shaped Grade 4 piece often scores better than a shaky Grade 6 piece.

Your performance should normally be between the minimum and maximum duration stated in the specification, often around two to five minutes in total across all pieces. If you are preparing a solo and an ensemble piece, make sure both are recorded under exam conditions or as specified by your centre.

For an experimental or practical task, you may be asked to improvise, realise a graphic score, or manipulate live sound. Treat this like a prepared performance: rehearse the structure, not just the sounds, and know where the piece begins, develops, and ends.

3. Ensemble Performance: Working with Others |

In an ensemble, examiners listen for how well you fit into the group, not how loudly you lead. Balance, intonation, rhythmic accuracy, and sensitive cueing are all practical skills that can be rehearsed and recorded as evidence.

Choose an ensemble group where your part is genuinely independent but not impossible. If you are a pianist playing duet, agree on breathing, rubato, and page-turn cues before the final take. A short run-through recorded on a phone can reveal balance problems that you do not notice while playing.

When using technology in ensemble work, such as a backing track or loop station, make sure your live part remains the focus. The moderator must be able to see and hear exactly what you are performing in real time.

4. Composing: From Idea to Finished Piece |

Composition is not just having a nice tune; WJEC markers look for development, structure, texture, and control of harmony. Start with a small idea such as a three-note motif or a rhythmic cell, then transform it through sequence, inversion, augmentation, or layering.

Many centres require two compositions: one free composition and one written to a brief or set of stimuli. For the brief, identify the exact musical features requested, such as a specific style, form, or use of music technology, and build your piece around them.

Keep every draft and sketch. In your log, explain why you changed a chord, cut a section, or added a pedal note. This evidence demonstrates experimental thinking and authentic authorship, which is essential for moderation.
