1. What Is Philosophy? |
Philosophy literally means ‘love of wisdom’. It is the activity of using reason, argument, and critical questioning to examine fundamental ideas about reality, knowledge, value, mind, language, and existence. In the WJEC IGCSE Philosophy course, philosophical enquiry focuses on clear definition of terms, the logical structure of arguments, and the evaluation of counterarguments.
Philosophy is divided into several main branches. Metaphysics asks what reality is ultimately like. Epistemology asks what we can know and how we know it. Ethics asks how we should live and act. Philosophy of religion examines arguments for and against God’s existence, and philosophy of mind asks what consciousness is and how it relates to the body.
In an exam, you should be able to explain a philosophical question, define key terms, present at least one argument for a view, and then give a critical objection. Avoid merely describing what philosophers said; show how their reasons lead to a conclusion.
2. Plato: The Theory of Forms |
Plato argued that the world we see around us is constantly changing and imperfect. Because knowledge requires stable, unchanging objects, Plato concluded that there must be another realm of reality: the world of Forms or Ideas. A Form is an eternal, perfect, non-physical pattern or essence of a property such as beauty, justice, or goodness.
Particular objects in the visible world ‘participate’ in the Forms. For example, a beautiful painting is beautiful only because it shares in the Form of Beauty. The highest Form is the Form of the Good, which illuminates all other Forms and makes knowledge possible. Plato’s Allegory of the Cave illustrates this: prisoners see only shadows on a wall, but the philosopher escapes and sees the real objects in the light of the sun, which represents the Form of the Good.
A key criticism of Plato comes from Aristotle, who argued that Forms do not exist in a separate world. Aristotle’s ‘third man’ argument suggests that if a man and the Form of Man are both men, then there must be a further Form to explain what they share, leading to an infinite regress. Moreover, there is no empirical evidence for a separate world of Forms.
3. Aristotle: Causes and the Good Life | 亚里士多德:四因与幸福生活
Aristotle rejected Plato’s separate world of Forms. Instead, he was an empiricist who believed that knowledge begins with the senses. To explain why a thing exists and what it is, Aristotle identified four causes: the material cause (what it is made of), the formal cause (its shape or essence), the efficient cause (what brought it into being), and the final cause (its purpose or telos).
For Aristotle, the final cause is especially important. All natural things have a purpose, and the human purpose is eudaimonia, usually translated as flourishing or happiness. Eudaimonia is achieved by exercising reason in accordance with virtue over a complete life. Virtue lies in the ‘golden mean’ between excess and deficiency: for example, courage is the mean between cowardice and recklessness.
Unlike Plato’s emphasis on abstract Forms, Aristotle focuses on the concrete human life and the development of character. However, critics argue that the doctrine of the mean is vague, because it does not tell us exactly how to act in every situation. It also assumes that all human beings share the same natural purpose, which may be contested.
4. The Cosmological Argument for God’s Existence |
The cosmological argument says that the existence of the universe requires an explanation outside itself. Thomas Aquinas presented three main versions. The First Way argues from motion: everything that moves is moved by something else, and an infinite chain of movers cannot be right, so there must be an Unmoved Mover, which is God. The Second Way argues from causation: every effect has a cause, so there must be a First Cause. The Third Way argues from contingency: because everything we observe could have failed to exist, there must be a necessary being that exists by its own nature.
The Kalam version of the argument states: everything that begins to exist has a cause; the universe began to exist; therefore the universe has a cause. This cause is argued to be timeless, spaceless, immaterial, and personal, which many identify with God.
Critics question why God should be exempt from the need for a cause or mover. If everything needs a cause, then God also needs a cause; if God can be uncaused, then perhaps the universe itself can be uncaused. David Hume also argued that we have no experience of the origin of whole universes, so we cannot confidently apply causal reasoning to the universe as a whole.
5. The Teleological Argument and Critique |
The teleological argument, or argument from design, claims that order, complexity, and purpose in the natural world point to an intelligent designer. William Paley used the watchmaker analogy: if you find a watch, its complex parts working together for a clear purpose lead you to infer a watchmaker. Likewise, the far greater complexity of the natural world, such as the human eye, leads us to infer a divine designer.
Aquinas’s Fifth Way also argues from purpose: natural bodies that lack intelligence still act regularly towards goals, so they must be directed by an intelligent being, which is God. This fits with the observation that natural laws and biological systems appear finely tuned for life.
The most important criticisms come from David Hume. He argued that the analogy between a watch and the universe is weak because we have seen watches being made but have never seen universes being made. Even if the argument works, it would only prove a limited designer, not the all-powerful, all-good God of classical theism. Moreover, Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection provides a non-intelligent explanation for apparent design in living things.
6. The Problem of Evil |
The problem of evil is the most powerful challenge to belief in an all-powerful, all-knowing, and all-loving God. The logical version says that the existence of evil is logically incompatible with such a God. If God is omnipotent, he could prevent evil; if he is omniscient, he knows about evil; if he is omnibenevolent, he would want to prevent evil. Yet evil exists, so at least one of these divine attributes must be false.
The evidential version is less strict: it argues that the sheer amount and pointless distribution of suffering makes God’s existence unlikely, even if it is not logically impossible. A loving God would not allow gratuitous evil that serves no greater good.
One response is Augustine’s theodicy: evil is not a real thing but a privation of good, caused by the free misuse of will by angels and humans. Evil entered the world through sin, and God is justified in allowing it because free will is a great good. Another response is Irenaeus’s soul-making theodicy: God allows suffering to help humans develop virtues such as courage, compassion, and patience, which could not be developed in a world without suffering.
Critics reply that free will does not explain natural evil such as earthquakes and disease, and that a loving God could allow some freedom while still preventing extreme cruelty. The soul-making theodicy is also challenged because some suffering destroys character rather than improves it, and it is difficult to see how the suffering of innocent children can be justified.
7. Mind and Body: Dualism vs Materialism |
The mind-body problem asks how mental states such as thoughts, feelings, and consciousness relate to physical states of the brain and body. Substance dualism, defended by René Descartes, holds that the mind is a non-physical thinking substance, while the body is a physical extended substance. They are distinct and can exist apart.
Descartes argued that he could doubt the existence of his body but could not doubt the existence of his thinking mind: ‘I think, therefore I am’. This shows that the mind is not identical to the body. However, the main problem for dualism is the interaction problem: if the mind is non-physical, how can it cause physical changes in the body?
Materialism, or physicalism, is the view that mental states are ultimately physical states of the brain. Identity theory says that mental states are identical to brain states, just as water is identical to H₂O. Functionalism says that mental states are defined by their causal roles rather than by their physical constitution. Materialism avoids the interaction problem because it does not introduce a non-physical substance.
A key objection to materialism is the existence of qualia, the subjective ‘what it is like’ aspects of experience, such as the redness of red or the pain of a headache. Critics argue that no physical description can capture what it is like to feel pain, so mental states cannot be reduced to physical states. Frank Jackson’s ‘Mary the colour scientist’ thought experiment supports this intuition.
8. Free Will and Determinism |
The free will debate asks whether human beings have genuine control over their actions or whether all actions are determined by prior causes. Hard determinism holds that every event, including human action, is caused by prior conditions and the laws of nature. Therefore, free will is an illusion, and moral responsibility is seriously challenged.
Libertarianism in philosophy is the view that free will is incompatible with determinism, but humans do have free will because at least some actions are not fully determined by prior causes. Libertarians argue that the direct experience of choosing between alternatives is a basic fact, and that moral responsibility requires such undetermined choice.
Compatibilism is a middle way. It argues that free will is compatible with determinism because free action simply means acting according to one’s own desires and intentions without external coercion, even if those desires are themselves determined. A compatibilist can say a person acts freely when they do what they want, even though they could not have done otherwise.
Critics of compatibilism argue that it redefines free will too weakly. A determined person who does what they want may still be a puppet of prior causes. Hard determinists and libertarians both accept that true free will requires the ability to do otherwise, but they disagree about whether that ability exists.
9. Ethical Theories: Utilitarianism |
Utilitarianism is a consequentialist ethical theory. It claims that the right action is the one that produces the greatest happiness for the greatest number of people. Jeremy Bentham developed the principle of utility and proposed a hedonic calculus to measure pleasure and pain according to intensity, duration, certainty, extent, and other factors.
John Stuart Mill modified Bentham’s version by distinguishing higher pleasures, such as intellectual and moral pleasures, from lower bodily pleasures. Mill argued that it is better to be a human being dissatisfied than a pig satisfied. He also distinguished act utilitarianism, which judges each act directly, from rule utilitarianism, which judges acts according to general rules that tend to promote happiness.
|---|---|
| All pleasures are equal in kind; only quantity matters.| 所有快乐在种类上平等;只有数量重要。 | Higher and lower pleasures differ in quality.| 高级快乐与低级快乐在质量上不同。 |
| Act utilitarianism; use hedonic calculus for each act.| 行为功利主义;对每个行为使用快乐计算法。 | Defends a form of rule utilitarianism.| 辩护一种规则功利主义。 |
Strengths of utilitarianism include its intuitive appeal: happiness seems a natural goal, it treats everyone’s interests equally, and it is flexible enough to deal with complex situations. However, critics argue that it can justify unjust actions if they produce greater overall happiness, such as punishing an innocent person to prevent a riot. It also makes very demanding demands on individuals and is difficult to apply because we cannot reliably predict all consequences.
10. Kantian Ethics: Duty and the Categorical Imperative |
Immanuel Kant developed a deontological ethical theory, which means that the rightness or wrongness of an action depends on the action itself, not on its consequences. Kant argued that the only thing good without qualification is a good will. A good will acts out of duty, not merely according to duty or from inclination.
The central principle of Kantian ethics is the categorical imperative, which commands absolutely and unconditionally. The first formulation says: ‘Act only according to that maxim whereby you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law.’ This tests whether an action is universalizable without contradiction. The second formulation says: ‘Act in such a way that you treat humanity, whether in your own person or in the person of another, always as an end and never merely as a means.’
Kant’s theory has important strengths. It treats all rational beings as equal and deserving of respect, it provides clear moral rules against lying, cheating, and using people, and it protects individual rights against utilitarian trade-offs. However, critics argue that it is too rigid: it would forbid lying even to a murderer asking where a victim is hiding. It also offers little guidance when two duties conflict, and it may ignore the moral relevance of consequences.
11. Virtue Ethics: Aristotle’s Character |
Virtue ethics focuses not on what action should be done, but on what kind of person one should be. Aristotle argued that the goal of life is eudaimonia, or flourishing, and that this is achieved by developing virtues, which are stable character traits that enable a person to live well. Virtues include courage, temperance, justice, and practical wisdom.
Each virtue is a mean between two vices: one of excess and one of deficiency. For example, courage is the mean between rashness and cowardice. The right mean is not the same for everyone; it depends on the situation and must be determined by practical wisdom, or phronesis, which comes from experience and moral training.
Virtue ethics has several attractions. It captures the importance of character and moral education, it avoids the cold calculation of utilitarianism and the rigid rules of Kantianism, and it explains why we admire people of good character. However, critics say it is too vague: it does not give clear rules for action in difficult cases. It also suffers from the problem of circular
