IGCSE WJEC Philosophy Summer Preparation and Bridging Course | IGCSE WJEC

📚 IGCSE WJEC Philosophy Summer Preparation and Bridging Course | IGCSE WJEC

This summer bridging guide is designed for students who are about to start IGCSE WJEC Philosophy. It introduces the main skills, key concepts, and study habits you will need before September. By working through the sections below, you can build a secure foundation and enter your first lessons with confidence.

1. Course Overview and Assessment Objectives |

IGCSE WJEC Philosophy is less about memorising famous quotations and more about learning to think clearly and argue carefully. You will be assessed on your knowledge of philosophical ideas and your ability to analyse and evaluate arguments.

IGCSE WJEC

Most questions follow two assessment objectives. AO1 requires accurate knowledge and understanding of key terms, theories, and examples. AO2 requires reasoned analysis and evaluation, including comparing viewpoints and justifying a conclusion.

From the first week, you should therefore practise writing short paragraphs that do two things: explain an idea precisely, then give a reason for or against it.

2. Core Branches of Philosophy |

Philosophy is usually divided into several branches, and WJEC topics are drawn from several of them. Knowing these branches helps you organise new material quickly.

Epistemology is the study of knowledge: what we can know, how we know it, and when our beliefs are justified. Metaphysics explores the nature of reality, including questions about time, identity, and the existence of God.

Ethics examines how we ought to live and what makes actions right or wrong. The philosophy of religion applies philosophical methods to religious beliefs, arguments, and experiences.

  • Epistemology: knowledge, belief, justification, scepticism |
  • Metaphysics: reality, identity, free will, God |
  • Ethics: right and wrong, moral theories, applied issues |
  • Philosophy of religion: arguments for and against belief |

3. Key Terms and Concepts |

WJEC examiners expect you to use philosophical vocabulary precisely. Begin your summer preparation by learning a small set of essential terms until you can define them from memory.

An argument in philosophy is not a quarrel. It is a set of statements in which some statements, called premises, are offered as reasons to support another statement, called the conclusion.

A valid argument is one where the conclusion follows logically from the premises. A sound argument is valid and has true premises. These two ideas are often confused, so practise using them carefully.

You should also learn the difference between a priori and a posteriori, analytic and synthetic, and deductive and inductive reasoning.

4. Analysing Arguments |

One of the most important WJEC skills is reconstructing an argument before you evaluate it. Start by identifying the conclusion, then list the premises that support it.

When reading a philosophical passage, ask three questions. What is the author trying to prove? What reasons do they give? Are those reasons strong enough?

Evaluation can be positive or negative. You might show that an argument is valid but has a false premise, or you might propose a counterexample that weakens the conclusion.

A counterexample is a specific case that contradicts a general claim. For example, if someone claims all knowledge comes from the senses, you could ask whether mathematical knowledge is known through the senses.

5. Ethical Theories for Beginners |

In ethics topics, WJEC often expects you to compare at least two moral theories. Start with three widely taught approaches: utilitarianism, deontology, and virtue ethics.

Utilitarianism says the right action is the one that produces the greatest happiness for the greatest number. It is consequentialist because it judges actions by their outcomes.

Deontology, associated with Immanuel Kant, says some actions are right or wrong in themselves, regardless of consequences. It emphasises duty, rules, and respect for persons.

Virtue ethics focuses on the character of the person rather than individual acts. A morally good action is one that a virtuous person would do.

6. Arguments in the Philosophy of Religion |

Philosophy of religion is a common WJEC area. You will encounter arguments for the existence of God, such as the design argument and the cosmological argument.

The design argument, or teleological argument, points to order and purpose in nature and concludes that an intelligent designer exists. Critics reply that natural processes such as evolution can explain apparent design.

The problem of evil is a major challenge to belief in an all-powerful and all-loving God. You should be able to explain how this problem supports the conclusion that such a God may not exist.

Religious experience is also studied. A key question is whether a personal experience can provide justification for belief to the person who has it.

7. Epistemology and Metaphysics Essentials |

Epistemology questions often ask whether we can trust the senses, reason, or testimony. You should know the difference between knowledge and mere true belief.

Classical scepticism argues that we cannot have certain knowledge. Responding to scepticism requires explaining which standards of knowledge are reasonable.

Metaphysical topics include free will and determinism. If every event has a cause, are our choices genuinely free? This debate introduces key terms such as libertarianism, hard determinism, and compatibilism.

You do not need to master all positions over the summer, but being familiar with these debates will make classroom discussion much more productive.

8. A Six-Week Summer Preparation Plan |

Consistent short sessions are more effective than long, rare study blocks. Aim for thirty minutes a day, five days a week, over six weeks.

Week Focus Suggested task
1 Key terms Make 20 flashcards
2 Argument analysis Identify premises and conclusions in 5 passages
3 Ethics Compare utilitarianism and deontology
4 Philosophy of religion Evaluate the design argument
5 Epistemology Write one paragraph on scepticism
6 Revision and self-test Answer 3 exam-style questions

Review your flashcards every week. Add new terms as you meet them in reading or videos.

9. Active Reading and Note-Taking |

Passive reading leads to weak revision notes. Use the SQ3R method: survey, question, read, recite, and review.

Before reading a section, turn the heading into a question. For example, ‘What is the design argument?’ Write your question at the top of the page and look for the answer as you read.

Use a two-column note format. On the left, write key ideas and arguments. On the right, write your own questions, objections, and examples.

After finishing a section, close the book and explain the main argument aloud in your own words. This self-test reveals gaps in understanding quickly.

10. Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them | 常见误区与避免方法

Many students describe a theory correctly but fail to evaluate it. In WJEC Philosophy, description alone is not enough for the higher marks.

A frequent mistake is confusing an opinion with an argument. Saying ‘I disagree’ is not evaluation unless you give a reasoned objection.

Another problem is using vague language such as ‘this is good’ or ‘this is bad’. Always explain what specifically makes an argument strong or weak.

Finally, read the exam question carefully. Many marks are lost when students write everything they know about a topic instead of answering the exact question set.

11. Writing Analytical Paragraphs |

Use the PEEL structure to develop clear evaluative paragraphs: Point, Evidence, Explanation, and Link back to the question.

Start with a precise point. For example: ‘The design argument has strengths but is weakened by the theory of evolution.’ Then support it with evidence and explain how the evidence affects the argument.

Always end a paragraph by linking back to the question. This shows the examiner that your analysis is focused and relevant.

Practise writing one PEEL paragraph per week during the summer. Compare your paragraph with a model answer or a study partner’s work.

12. Useful Resources and Final Self-Check |

Build a small resource kit before term begins. Reliable sources include the BBC Bitesize philosophy pages, the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy for background reading, and Wireless Philosophy videos on YouTube.

You may also use WJEC past papers and mark schemes, which show exactly how examiners apply the mark scheme to real answers.

By the end of the summer, you should be able to define fifteen key terms, reconstruct a short argument, state one strength and one weakness of utilitarianism, and write a PEEL paragraph on a topic from the course.

If you can do these things, you are ready for the first term. If not, revisit the relevant section and practise again before school begins.
