📚 1 Introduction |

Welcome to this AQA A-Level Mathematics revision series. This first chapter sets the scene: it explains the structure of the course, the skills you will need, and how to use the material that follows. Whether you are studying for the AS-level or the full A-level, understanding the big picture is essential for efficient revision.

1. What is A-Level Mathematics?

A-Level Mathematics is a rigorous qualification that develops your ability to think logically, abstractly, and quantitatively. The AQA specification is organised into two broad strands: pure mathematics, which teaches the language of mathematics itself, and applied mathematics, which consists of statistics and mechanics. Pure mathematics builds the tools — algebra, calculus, trigonometry and proof — while the applied sections show how those tools are used to model real-world situations.

You will be assessed over two or three written papers, depending on whether you take the AS or the full A-level. The full AQA A-level Mathematics consists of three papers: Paper 1 (Pure), Paper 2 (Pure and Statistics), and Paper 3 (Pure and Mechanics). Each paper is equally weighted and allows the use of an approved scientific or graphical calculator.

2. The Structure of the AQA A-Level Course | AQA A-Level

Under the AQA specification, the A-level is a two-year linear course, while AS-level is a one-year standalone qualification. The overlapping content ensures that AS students cover the essential pure and applied topics, while A-level candidates go further into calculus, logarithms, trigonometric identities, hypothesis testing, and variable acceleration.

The four overarching topics in the pure strand are: (1) proof, (2) algebra and functions, (3) coordinate geometry, and (4) sequences and series. Applied mathematics then draws on statistics (data interpretation, probability, statistical distributions, and hypothesis testing) and mechanics (kinematics, forces, and Newton’s laws). The table below summarises the main content areas.

Strand Key Topics
Pure Proof, algebra, functions, graphs, trigonometry, exponentials and logarithms, differentiation, integration, sequences, vectors
Statistics Sampling, data presentation, probability, binomial and normal distributions, hypothesis testing
Mechanics Kinematics, forces, Newton’s laws, moments, variable acceleration

3. Assessment Objectives |

Every exam question in AQA A-Level Mathematics is mapped to one of three assessment objectives (AOs). AO1 focuses on mathematical fluency: recalling formulae, performing routine manipulations, and carrying out standard procedures accurately. AO2 tests reasoning and interpretation: you must choose appropriate strategies, make deductions, and interpret results in context. AO3 assesses problem-solving and modelling: you are expected to translate a real-world scenario into mathematics, analyse it, and evaluate your model.

In the exam papers, about 40% of marks target AO1, 35% target AO2, and 25% target AO3. The balance means you cannot simply memorise proofs or formulas — you must be able to apply them flexibly. A classic AO2 question might ask you to explain why a particular value is rejected in a quadratic equation, while an AO3 question could ask you to model the height of a projectile or the decay of a radioactive sample.

4. Pure Mathematics: The Foundations |

Pure mathematics is the core of the A-level. Without a strong grasp of algebraic manipulation, you will struggle with calculus, trigonometry, and applied questions. The first pure topics in the AQA scheme are indices, surds, quadratics, simultaneous equations, and inequalities. These appear directly in Paper 1 and also underpin every other paper.

One key skill is manipulation of surds. For example, you should be able to rationalise a denominator such as 1⁄√2 by multiplying top and bottom by √2 to obtain √2⁄2. In the same way, you need to work confidently with fractional and negative indices. The laws of indices are:

am × an = am+n , am ÷ an = am−n , (am)n = amn

You must also be comfortable with the quadratic formula and the discriminant. For the quadratic equation ax² + bx + c = 0, the discriminant Δ = b² − 4ac tells you the number of real roots. If Δ > 0 there are two distinct roots, if Δ = 0 there is one repeated root, and if Δ < 0 there are no real roots. The formula for solving this equation is:

x = (−b ± √(b² − 4ac)) / (2a)

5. Applied Mathematics: Statistics and Mechanics |

Applied mathematics is not just about using formulas; it is about interpreting the real world. In statistics, you will learn to describe data using measures of central tendency and spread, to model probabilities using the binomial and normal distributions, and to make inferences through hypothesis testing. The normal distribution N(μ, σ²) is central to many problems, and you will need to use tables or a calculator to find probabilities such as P(Z < z).

In mechanics, you separate the physical world into mathematical models. The key quantities are displacement (s), initial velocity (u), final velocity (v), acceleration (a), and time (t). The constant-acceleration equations, often called the suvat equations, are central to kinematics. For example:

v = u + at , s = ut + ½at² , v² = u² + 2as

Newton’s second law F = ma connects force, mass, and acceleration. In exam problems, you often need to draw a force diagram, resolve forces into perpendicular components, and then apply F = ma separately in the horizontal and vertical directions. Remember that a common mistake is forgetting to include weight (mg) or reaction forces when the object is on a slope.

6. Algebraic Skills |

Algebra is the language of A-Level Mathematics, and fluency in algebraic manipulation is non-negotiable. You should be able to expand brackets, factorise quadratics and cubics, simplify algebraic fractions, and solve equations involving fractions and powers. For example, to solve the equation 2/(x + 1) = 3/(x − 2), you cross-multiply to get 2(x − 2) = 3(x + 1), then solve to find x = −7.

Another core skill is completing the square. For a quadratic expression x² + bx + c, you can write it as (x + b/2)² − (b/2)² + c. This form reveals the vertex of the parabola and is essential for solving quadratic inequalities. For example, solving x² − 6x + 5 > 0 by completing the square gives (x − 3)² > 4, so x < 1 or x > 5.

You also need to work confidently with functions, including domain and range. The composition of functions f(g(x)) and the inverse function f⁻¹(x) are common exam topics. Remember that for f⁻¹ to exist, f must be one-to-one on the given domain. A good example is f(x) = 3x + 2; its inverse is f⁻¹(x) = (x − 2)/3.

7. Graph Sketching and Transformations |

Graphical interpretation is a large part of the AQA pure mathematics papers. You should be able to sketch the graphs of linear, quadratic, cubic, reciprocal, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions. Sketches must show key features: intercepts, turning points, asymptotes, and intersections. For the curve y = ax² + bx + c, the y-intercept is c, and the x-intercepts come from solving ax² + bx + c = 0.

Graph transformations are also essential. The rules are simple: y = f(x) + a shifts the graph up by a units; y = f(x + a) shifts left by a units; y = −f(x) reflects in the x-axis; and y = f(−x) reflects in the y-axis. A common source of confusion is that y = f(x + a) moves left when a is positive. For example, y = sin(x + π/2) shifts the sine curve left by π/2.

规则很简单:y = f(x) + a 将图像上移 a 个单位;y = f(x + a) 向左平移 a 个单位;y = −f(x) 关于 x 轴反射;y = f(−x) 关于 y 轴反射。常见的困惑点是 y = f(x + a) 在 a 为正时向移动。

When sketching a rational function, look for vertical asymptotes where the denominator is zero, and horizontal asymptotes as x → ±∞. For example, the graph of y = (x + 1)/(x − 2) has a vertical asymptote at x = 2 and a horizontal asymptote at y = 1. You should also be aware that the curve approaches the asymptote; it never actually reaches it.

8. Proof and Logic |

Proof is a distinct area of the AQA specification, and it often appears as a short question at the start of a paper. You need to understand four methods: direct proof, proof by exhaustion, proof by contradiction, and disproof by counterexample. A direct proof uses logical steps from given assumptions to a conclusion. For example, to prove that the product of two even numbers is even, let the numbers be 2m and 2n, so their product is 4mn = 2(2mn), which is even.

Proof by exhaustion involves checking every possible case. For instance, to prove that n² + n is even for all natural numbers n, you can consider the two cases: n even or n odd. If n is even, n = 2k, then n² + n = 4k² + 2k = 2(2k² + k), which is even; if n is odd, n = 2k + 1, then n² + n = (2k + 1)(2k + 2) = 2(2k + 1)(k + 1), again even.

Proof by contradiction is a powerful technique. To prove that √2 is irrational, assume √2 is rational, so √2 = a/b in lowest terms, where a and b are integers. Squaring gives 2b² = a², so a² is even, hence a is even. Then write a = 2k, which gives 2b² = 4k², so b² = 2k², meaning b is also even. This contradicts the assumption that a/b is in lowest terms. Therefore √2 is irrational.

9. Problem-Solving and Exam Technique |

Problem-solving in A-Level Mathematics is not about memorising every possible question type; it is about developing a flexible mindset. The most effective strategy is to read the question carefully, identify the underlying mathematical concept, write down any relevant formulae, and then work step by step. In applied questions, clearly define your variables and state any assumptions you make.

Exam technique is equally important. Show all your working — even if a final answer is wrong, you can still earn method marks. Use your calculator efficiently: for example, check that you are in the correct angle mode (degrees or radians) when doing trigonometry. In statistics questions, write down the distribution you are using, e.g. X ~ B(n, p), before computing probabilities.

Time management is crucial. In a 2-hour exam, try to allocate minutes per mark: for a 120-mark paper, spend at most 1 minute per mark on average. If you are stuck on a question, move on and return later. Always answer the easiest questions first to secure marks. It is also wise to leave the final 5 minutes for checking over the arithmetic and any signs.

10. How to Use This Revision Series |

This series is designed to be worked through in order. Each chapter focuses on one topic, explains the key ideas in a simple way, and provides worked examples and checkpoints. You should have access to the AQA formula booklet and an approved calculator as you read. Do not simply read the examples; cover them and attempt them yourself before checking the solution.

Before starting a new chapter, make sure you understand every previous topic, because mathematics builds on itself. For instance, you cannot study integration without first understanding differentiation and algebra. After each chapter, use past paper questions from the AQA bank to test your understanding. If you make mistakes, record them in a revision log and revisit the relevant theory.

Finally, be consistent. Short study sessions of 30–45 minutes each day are more effective than long irregular cramming sessions. Use this introduction as your roadmap, and you will be fully prepared for every paper. Good luck with your revision!
