📚 A-Level CAIE Media Studies Vocabulary & Terminology Quick Memorisation Guide | A-Level CAIE 媒体:词汇术语速记指南

This guide explains the core vocabulary you need for CAIE A-Level Media Studies. It pairs each term with a clear definition, a media example, and a memory hook so you can use terminology accurately in Component 1 and Component 2 responses.

本指南讲解 CAIE A-Level 媒体研究所需的核心词汇。每个术语都配有清晰定义、媒体案例和记忆线索,帮助你在 Component 1 和 Component 2 答题中准确使用术语。

1. Media Language and Text | 媒体语言与媒介文本

Media language is the system of codes, conventions, techniques and signs that media producers use to create meaning. A media text is any product that can be analysed, such as a film poster, music video, news article or video game.

媒体语言是媒体生产者用来创造意义的一套编码、惯例、技术和符号系统。媒介文本是任何可以被分析的产品,如电影海报、音乐视频、新闻文章或电子游戏。

The term mediation reminds you that media products do not show reality directly; they select, edit and shape reality. Even live news coverage is mediated through camera angles, captions, editing and presenter tone.

术语 mediation(中介化)提醒你,媒介产品并不直接呈现现实;它们选择、编辑并塑造现实。即使是直播新闻报道,也会通过镜头角度、字幕、剪辑和主播语气进行中介。

Memory hook: think of media language as a “grammar of the screen” – once you learn its rules, you can read any media text fluently.

记忆线索:把媒体语言想象成“屏幕语法”——一旦掌握规则,你就能流利地阅读任何媒介文本。

2. Semiotics: Sign, Signifier and Signified | 符号学:符号、能指与所指

Semiotics is the study of signs. A sign is anything that produces meaning, and it is made of two parts: the signifier is the physical form you see or hear, while the signified is the mental concept it triggers.

符号学是研究符号的学科。符号是任何能产生意义的事物,它由两部分组成:能指是你看到或听到的物质形式,所指是它在你脑中唤起的概念。

For example, a red rose in a perfume advertisement is a signifier; the signified may be romance, beauty and femininity. In semiotic analysis, always link the physical detail to the concept it communicates.

例如,香水广告中的红玫瑰是能指;所指可能是浪漫、美丽和女性气质。在符号分析中,要始终把物质细节与它传达的概念联系起来。

Ferdinand de Saussure argued that the relationship between signifier and signified is arbitrary, meaning there is no natural reason why the word “dog” represents that animal. Media analysis therefore asks why producers choose particular signs.

索绪尔认为能指与所指之间的关系是任意的,即“dog”这个词没有天然理由代表那种动物。因此,媒介分析要追问生产者为什么选择特定的符号。

Memory hook: signifier = the thing; signified = the idea. Ask “what is shown, and what does it mean to this audience?”

记忆线索:能指=事物;所指=观念。自问“展示了什么?它对这个受众意味着什么?”

3. Denotation and Connotation | 外延与内涵

Denotation is the literal, dictionary meaning of a sign. Connotation is the associated, cultural or emotional meaning that a sign carries in a specific context.

外延是符号的字面或词典意义。内涵是符号在特定语境中携带的文化或情感联想意义。

A skull on a medicine bottle denotes a human skull, but connotes danger, death or poison. In exam answers, move from denotation to connotation: first describe what you see, then explain what it suggests.

药瓶上的骷髅外延是人的头骨,但内涵是危险、死亡或毒药。在考试答案中,要从外延推进到内涵:先描述你看到的内容,再解释它暗示什么。

Roland Barthes called connotative meanings “myths” because they can make cultural values seem natural or universal. For example, an advertisement showing a mother cooking may reinforce the myth that domestic work is naturally female.

罗兰·巴特把内涵意义称为“神话”,因为它们能让文化价值显得自然或普遍。例如,一则展示母亲做饭的广告可能强化“家务天然属于女性”的神话。

Memory hook: denotation = what it is; connotation = what it suggests. In analysis, always ask “so what?” after describing a sign.

记忆线索:外延=它是什么;内涵=它暗示什么。在分析中,描述符号后要追问“那又怎样?”

4. Codes and Conventions | 编码与惯例

Codes are systems of signs that make meaning. Technical codes include camera shots, angles, editing and lighting; symbolic codes include body language, colour and setting; written codes include captions, headlines and typography.

编码是制造意义的符号系统。技术编码包括镜头、角度、剪辑和灯光;象征编码包括肢体语言、色彩和场景;书面编码包括字幕、标题和字体设计。

Conventions are the expected ways that codes are used in a
