Social class is a key context variable in education, health and employment research. In Edexcel A-Level Mathematics, the statistics topics allow you to handle social class data formally through sampling, probability models, correlation and hypothesis testing, rather than relying on informal impressions.

1. Social Class as a Categorical Variable | 社会阶级作为分类变量

Social class is usually categorical rather than continuous. Nominal schemes such as the National Statistics Socio-economic Classification (NS-SEC) assign labels with no natural numerical order, while simpler occupational scales may be ordinal: for example ‘routine’, ‘intermediate’ and ‘managerial’ can be ranked.

In A-Level questions, you must identify whether the variable is nominal or ordinal because this determines which summary statistics and tests are appropriate.

  • Nominal: no order, e.g. NS-SEC 1, 2, 3 categories.

Stratified sampling divides the population by social class and samples proportionally from each stratum, improving precision.

Exam questions often ask you to spot bias, such as oversampling university graduates or using volunteer online surveys.

3. Data Presentation: Frequency Tables and Charts | 数据展示:频数表与图表

Frequency tables summarise how many individuals fall into each social class. Bar charts are suitable for discrete categories, while pie charts show proportions of a whole. To compare two categorical variables, a stacked or clustered bar chart is clearer than separate pie charts.

Always check that frequencies sum to the sample size and that proportions sum to 1 before interpreting a chart.

4. Measures of Central Tendency and Spread | 集中趋势与离散程度

For ordinal social class, the median and interquartile range are preferred because the mean depends on assigning arbitrary numerical scores. If a question codes lower, middle and upper as 1, 2 and 3, the mean can be calculated but should be interpreted cautiously.

Mean = Σx / n, Median = middle value, IQR = Q3 − Q1

The range is easy to compute but is heavily affected by outliers. Standard deviation is only meaningful when the data are numerical with equal intervals.

Probability rules can model intersections between social class and outcomes such as higher education entry. Tree diagrams are helpful when class is the first branch and the outcome is the second branch, with conditional probabilities on the second branches.
