Carbon Nanoparticles |

📚 Carbon Nanoparticles |

Carbon nanoparticles are nanoscale forms of carbon, typically with at least one dimension below 100 nm. They include fullerenes, carbon nanotubes and graphene-related materials, and they show properties that differ sharply from bulk graphite or diamond.

1. What Are Carbon Nanoparticles? |

In A-level chemistry, the term ‘carbon nanoparticles’ refers to discrete carbon structures with nanoscale dimensions, not simply small pieces of graphite. Because their size approaches the scale of atoms and molecules, quantum effects and a very high surface-area-to-volume ratio become important.

Common examples are fullerenes such as buckminsterfullerene C₆₀, single-walled and multi-walled carbon nanotubes, and graphene quantum dots. These species are often studied as carbon allotropes or as functional nanomaterials.

2. Carbon Allotropes at the Nanoscale |

Carbon can form several allotropes because its valence electrons can adopt sp, sp² and sp³ hybridisation. Diamond is a 3D sp³ network, graphite is a layered sp² structure, and the nanoscale allotropes
