In Edexcel A-Level Mathematics, data questions often ask you to interpret not only the overall tendency of a data set but also the conflicts within it. A single average or straight line can hide important contradictions, so you need to examine spread, outliers, skew, residuals, and sampling bias before drawing a conclusion.

在Edexcel A-Level数学中,数据题常常要求你不仅要解释数据集的整体趋势,还要识别其中的冲突。单一的平均数或直线可能掩盖重要的矛盾,因此在下结论之前,你需要检查离散程度、异常值、偏斜、残差和抽样偏差。

1. Measures of Central Tendency | 集中趋势的度量

The mean is the arithmetic average, the median is the middle value, and the mode is the most frequent value. These three measures can tell different stories. When the distribution is symmetric, they tend to agree; when it is skewed or contains outliers, they often conflict.

均值是算术平均数,中位数是中间值,众数是出现频率最高的值。这三种度量可能讲述不同的故事。当分布对称时,它们往往一致;当分布偏斜或含有异常值时,它们常常相互冲突。

2. Spread and Variability | 离散程度与变异

A tendency alone cannot capture variability. Range, interquartile range and standard deviation show how far values typically lie from the centre. A large spread means the tendency is weaker, and individual values are more likely to conflict with the average.

仅有趋势无法反映变异性。极差、四分位距和标准差显示数值通常偏离中心的距离。离散程度大意味着趋势较弱,个别数值更可能与平均值冲突。

3. Outliers and Conflict | 异常值及其冲突

An outlier is a value that lies well outside the main body of data. A common rule identifies an outlier as any value less than Q₁ − 1.5 × IQR or greater than Q₃ + 1.5 × IQR. Outliers create conflict because they pull the mean dramatically while leaving the median almost unchanged.

异常值是指远离数据主体的数值。常用规则将低于Q₁ − 1.5 × IQR或高于Q₃ + 1.5 × IQR的值视为异常值。异常值产生冲突,因为它们会大幅拉动均值,却几乎不改变中位数。


4. Skew and the Mean-Median Conflict | 偏态与均值-中位数冲突

Skew describes the lack of symmetry. In a right-skewed distribution the mean is usually greater than the median; in a left-skewed distribution the mean is usually less than the median. The direction of the mean-median gap is a quick diagnostic for skew.
