📚 Ministerial Questions and Prime Minister’s Questions: Statistical Modelling for Edexcel A-Level Maths | 部长质询与首相问答:适用于 Edexcel A-Level 数学的统计建模

In Edexcel A-Level Mathematics, statistics questions often use real-life contexts. One engaging context is the weekly Prime Minister’s Questions (PMQs) and ministerial question sessions in the UK Parliament. By treating the number and length of questions as data, you can revise key statistical ideas such as sampling, binomial distribution, hypothesis testing and correlation.

1. The Context as a Data-Generating Process |

PMQs usually lasts about 30 minutes every Wednesday when Parliament is sitting. MPs are selected by the Speaker to ask one question, and the Prime Minister then responds. Ministerial questions take place in each department on a rota. For a mathematician, each session produces a small data set: number of questions asked, number from each party, length of each question in words, and response time in seconds. Before applying any statistical technique, always define the population, sample and variable. The population might be all possible PMQs sessions in a parliamentary term; a sample could be the 10 most recent sessions. Variables such as ‘number of questions asked by opposition MPs’ are discrete, while ‘response length in seconds’ is continuous.

2. Sampling Methods and Potential Bias |

If you wanted to estimate the average number of questions per PMQs, it would be impractical to watch every session ever held. You would take a sample. Edexcel expects you to know simple random sampling, systematic sampling, stratified sampling, quota sampling and opportunity sampling. In a PMQs study, stratified sampling could divide sessions by parliamentary term or by government/opposition periods. Opportunity sampling might mean using only televised clips you have saved, but this introduces bias because shorter or less dramatic exchanges may be missed. Always comment on whether the sampling frame is complete and whether the sample is representative.
