In A-Level Chemistry, recognition means identifying an unknown chemical species — an ion, a functional group, or a compound — by interpreting its characteristic physical and chemical behaviour. This skill is tested across both inorganic and organic analysis, as well as in spectroscopic techniques. Recognition is not only about memorising colours and precipitates; it is about using evidence to confirm or eliminate possibilities.

1. Recognising Metal Cations by Flame Tests | 通过焰色反应识别金属阳离子

Flame tests are a classic method for recognising certain metal cations. The ion is introduced into a non-luminous Bunsen flame, and the characteristic colour produced is due to electron transitions between energy levels. Only Group 1 and a few Group 2 metals give easily visible colours; other cations often require a cobalt-blue glass to filter out interfering sodium impurity.

A common pitfall is the presence of sodium ions as an impurity, which gives a bright yellow flame that masks other colours. To recognise potassium ions reliably, view the flame through cobalt-blue glass, which filters out the yellow sodium emission and allows the lilac colour of potassium to be seen.

Some hydroxides are insoluble in excess NaOH, whereas amphoteric hydroxides, such as Al(OH)₃ and Zn(OH)₂, dissolve in excess reagent.
