Strategic Choice in A Level Business | A Level

📚 Strategic Choice in A Level Business | A Level

Strategic choice is the process of selecting the most appropriate long-term direction and method for a business after analysing its internal capabilities and external environment. At A Level, you are expected to evaluate alternative strategies rather than simply describe them.

1. The Nature of Strategic Choice |

Strategic choice is the stage after strategic analysis in which senior managers decide the long-term direction of the whole business. It is about choosing between alternative courses of action that will affect the organisation for several years and are often difficult or costly to reverse.

A strategic choice differs from a routine operational decision because it involves significant resource commitment, high uncertainty and the need to satisfy multiple stakeholders.

At A Level, you should be able to recommend a strategy and justify it using both qualitative and quantitative evidence from the case material.

2. Levels of Strategy |

Corporate strategy is concerned with the overall purpose and scope of the business. It answers questions such as ‘Which markets should we enter or exit?’ and ‘What businesses should we own?’.

Business strategy, also called competitive strategy, focuses on how to compete successfully in a particular market. Functional strategy deals with how marketing, operations, finance and human resources support the corporate and business strategies.

In an exam answer, recognising the level of strategy helps you avoid recommending a functional tactic when the question asks for a corporate choice.

3. The Ansoff Matrix |

The Ansoff matrix is a widely used model that classifies growth strategies according to whether they involve new or existing products and new or existing markets. The four options are market penetration, market development, product development and diversification.

Market penetration is selling more of the existing product to the existing market, for example through price cuts, advertising or loyalty schemes. It is usually the lowest-risk strategy because the business understands its customers and products.

Market development means selling existing products to new markets, such as entering another country or targeting a new demographic group. Product development means creating new products for existing markets, which may require significant research and development.

Diversification means moving into new products and new markets. It carries the highest risk because the firm lacks experience in both areas. Related diversification uses existing capabilities, whereas unrelated diversification does not.

4. Porter’s Generic Strategies |

Michael Porter argued that businesses can achieve sustainable competitive advantage through three generic strategies: cost leadership, differentiation and focus. Focus can be divided into cost focus and differentiation focus.

Cost leadership means becoming the lowest-cost producer in the industry while still offering acceptable quality. This can be achieved through economies of scale, tight cost control or access to cheaper inputs.

Differentiation means making the product or service unique in ways that customers value, so the business can charge a premium price. Focus means targeting a narrow market segment and serving it better than broad competitors.
