In political theory, the state is often debated as a necessary evil. In A-Level Mathematics, particularly mechanics, we borrow the same phrase to describe the physical state of a moving particle: its displacement, velocity and acceleration. These state variables are indispensable for solving problems, yet they can feel like a burden because they demand consistent notation, sign conventions and careful interpretation.

1. What Do We Mean by ‘State’ in Mechanics? | 力学中的’状态’指什么?
In mechanics, the state of a particle is the minimum set of quantities needed to describe its motion at a given instant. For linear motion, these quantities are displacement s, initial velocity u, final velocity v, acceleration a and time t. Once you know the state, you can predict future positions using equations of motion.

The word ‘state’ here does not mean a country or government. It refers to the condition of the moving object. In A-Level mechanics, you must be able to read a question and extract the state variables before doing any calculation.

2. Why the State Is Necessary | 为什么状态是必要的
Without a clear state, you cannot set up equations of motion. The SUVAT equations link the five state variables, allowing you to solve for two unknowns when three are given. State-based thinking turns a word problem into an algebraic model.
