Acceleration appears throughout CIE A-Level Physics, from kinematics and forces to circular motion and gravitational fields. Understanding its unit is essential because every calculated value must carry a correct unit, and unit consistency can reveal whether an equation is physically plausible.

1. What Is Acceleration? | 什么是加速度?

Acceleration is defined as the rate of change of velocity with respect to time. If an object changes its velocity by Δv during a time interval Δt, the average acceleration is given by:

a = Δv ÷ Δt

Since velocity is measured in metres per second and time in seconds, the unit of acceleration follows immediately from this definition. Acceleration is a vector quantity, so its direction is the same as the direction of the change in velocity.

For example, an acceleration of 3 m/s² means that the velocity changes by 3 m/s during every second of motion. The notation s⁻² is mathematically equivalent to 1/s², so m/s² and m s⁻² represent exactly the same unit.

例如,3 m/s² 的加速度意味着运动过程中每一秒速度变化 3 m/s。符号 s⁻² 在数学上等价于 1/s²,因此 m/s² 和 m s⁻² 表示完全相同的单位。


3. Derivation from Base SI Units | 从国际基本单位推导

Acceleration is derived from two SI base units: the metre (m) for length and the second (s) for time. The unit can be obtained by dividing the unit of velocity by the unit of time:

Many students find the phrase ‘per second squared’ confusing because it seems to suggest a square second is a physical interval. In fact, m/s² should be interpreted as the change in velocity per unit time: (m/s)/s.

许多学生觉得“每二次方秒”这个说法令人困惑,因为它似乎暗示平方秒是一个物理时间间隔。实际上,m/s² 应解释为单位时间内速度的变化:(m/s)/s。

If a car has an acceleration of 4 m/s², its velocity increases by 4 m/s in the first second, by another 4 m/s in the next second, and so on. After 1 s the change is 4 m/s, after 2 s it is 8 m/s, and after 3 s it is 12 m/s, provided acceleration is constant.

5. Scalar vs Vector and Unit Implications | 标量与矢量及其单位含义

Acceleration is a vector, so it has both magnitude and direction. The SI unit remains m/s² for both positive and negative acceleration. A negative sign indicates that the acceleration acts in the opposite direction to the chosen positive direction.

加速度是矢量,既有大小又有方向。无论加速度为正还是为负,SI 单位始终是 m/s²。负号表示加速度与所选正方向相反。

For motion in one dimension, an acceleration of +2 m/s² east is different from an acceleration of -2 m/s² east. Both have the same magnitude of 2 m/s², but opposite directions. Deceleration or retardation is simply acceleration in the direction opposite to velocity.

对于一维运动,向东 +2 m/s² 的加速度与向东 -2 m/s² 的加速度不同。两者大小均为 2 m/s²,但方向相反。减速或减速运动就是与速度方向相反的加速度。


6. Common Units and Conversions | 常用单位与换算

Although m/s² is the standard SI unit, exam questions may give data in other units such as cm/s² or km/h per second.
