1. The Purpose of Business Objectives |
Business objectives are specific, measurable targets a firm sets to achieve its overall aims. They translate broad intentions such as ‘to be successful’ into focused goals that managers can monitor, review and adjust.
Good objectives serve four main purposes: they give direction, support decision-making, motivate employees, and act as a yardstick for measuring performance.
- Direction: managers allocate resources to the most important priorities. |
- Decision-making: alternative strategies are judged against stated objectives. |
- Motivation: realistic targets give employees a sense of purpose and achievement. |
- Control: actual results are compared with targets so corrective action can be taken. |
2. Mission, Vision and Aims |
A mission statement is a short written declaration of a firm’s core purpose and values. For example, a coffee chain might state: ‘To inspire and nurture the human spirit one cup at a time.’
A vision describes the long-term desired future position of the business, while aims are general long-term goals such as survival, growth, profit or public service. Corporate objectives are then derived from these aims.
|---|---|---|
| Mission 使命 | Core purpose and values 核心目的与价值观 | To make healthy food affordable 让健康食品更亲民 |
| Vision 愿景 | Long-term desired future 长期期望的未来 | To be the region’s leading organic retailer 成为本地区领先的有机零售商 |
| Objectives 目标 | Specific targets derived from aims 由宗旨衍生出的具体目标 | Increase market share from 10% to 15% by 2027 到2027年将市场份额从10%提高到15% |
3. SMART Objectives | SMART 目标
Objectives are more effective when they are SMART. This means they should be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound.
- Specific: the target is clear and focused, not vague. |
- Measurable: progress can be quantified, for example by revenue or market share. |
- Achievable: the target is challenging but possible with available resources. |
- Relevant: the objective supports the broader mission and strategy. |
- Time-bound: there is a clear deadline for achievement. |
Example: ‘Increase annual sales revenue by 8% within the next 12 months’ is stronger than ‘grow sales’.
4. Hierarchy of Objectives |
Large organisations set objectives at different levels. Corporate objectives shape the whole business, functional objectives support each department, and individual targets align staff performance with company goals.
- Corporate objectives: set by the board of directors for the whole business. |
- Functional objectives: set for marketing, finance, operations and human resources. |
- Individual objectives: agreed with employees through appraisal or target setting. |
This hierarchy helps to ensure coherence: marketing may aim to increase brand awareness, finance may aim to cut costs by 5%, and operations may aim to reduce waste by 10%, all supporting a corporate objective of higher profit.
5. Common Business Objectives |
Different businesses adopt different objectives depending on their ownership, size, sector and stage of development. Some common objectives are summarised below.
|---|---|---|
| Survival 生存 | Continuing to trade during difficult periods 在困难时期继续经营 | Cash flow, break-even 现金流、盈亏平衡 |
| Profit maximisation 利润最大化 | Earning the largest possible positive gap between revenue and cost 实现收入与成本之间最大的正差额 | Total profit, profit margin 总利润、利润率 |
| Market share 市场份额 | Sales as a percentage of total market sales 销售额占市场总销售额的百分比 | Percentage share 百分比份额 |
6. Profit Objectives: Maximising vs Satisficing |
Private sector firms often set profit objectives because profit is essential for survival, reinvestment, rewarding shareholders and attracting lenders.
Profit maximisation means aiming for the largest possible positive gap between total revenue and total cost. The basic formula is:
Profit = Total Revenue − Total Cost |
However, many firms choose profit satisficing. They earn a satisfactory level of profit to keep shareholders content while pursuing other goals such as work-life balance, ethical sourcing or long-term market development.
This is common in family businesses and social enterprises, where owners may value non-financial rewards more than maximum profit.
7. Non-Profit Objectives: Growth, Survival and Social Goals |
Not all businesses prioritise profit. New firms often focus on survival, while mature firms may pursue growth in order to increase market power, economies of scale and long-term profitability.
Social enterprises, cooperatives and public sector organisations may set objectives based on social welfare, environmental protection or service quality. For example, a charity may aim to provide 10,000 free meals per month.
- Public sector objective: provide high-quality healthcare within a fixed budget. |
- Social enterprise objective: employ homeless people and reinvest surplus. |
- Environmental objective: reduce carbon emissions by 20% by 2030.
8. Conflicting Objectives and Trade-Offs |
Objectives often conflict, so managers must make trade-offs. A decision that improves one objective may harm another.
- Growth vs profit: cutting prices may increase sales volume but reduce profit margins. |
- Short-term vs long-term: reducing staff training may raise this year’s profit but harm future service quality. |
- Shareholder returns vs employee rewards: higher dividends may limit funds available for wage increases. |
- Cost reduction vs quality: using cheaper materials may lower costs but damage brand reputation. |
Stakeholder mapping helps managers understand whose interests are most influential and urgent. A high-power, high-interest group such as a major shareholder often has more influence than a low-power supplier.
9. Why Objectives Change Over Time | 目标为何会随时间变化
Business objectives are not fixed. They change as internal and external circumstances evolve.
- Business size and age: a start-up may prioritise survival, while an established firm may pursue growth. |
- Market conditions: during recession, firms may switch from growth to survival. |
- Technology: digital disruption may force a retailer to prioritise e-commerce sales. |
- Ownership changes: a new private equity owner may demand higher short-term profit. |
- Competition: new rivals may lead a firm to focus on differentiation or cost leadership. |
- Legislation and pressure: stricter environmental laws may make sustainability a strategic objective. |
10. Management by Objectives (MBO) |
Management by objectives is a structured approach in which managers and employees agree on targets and then review performance against those targets. It links individual goals to corporate objectives.
- Set objectives: managers and employees agree specific, measurable targets. |
- Plan action: allocate resources and decide how targets will be achieved. |
- Monitor progress: regular reviews identify problems early. |
- Review and reward: performance is assessed and linked to pay, promotion or further development. |
MBO can improve motivation and accountability, but it may also create excessive paperwork and can encourage short-term thinking if targets are badly designed.
