The mole is the SI base unit for amount of substance. One mole is defined as the amount of substance that contains exactly the same number of elementary entities as there are atoms in exactly 12 g of carbon-12. This number, known as the Avogadro constant, is approximately 6.022 × 10²³.

The Avogadro constant, denoted Nₐ, has a value of 6.022 × 10²³ mol⁻¹. It provides the conversion factor between the number of particles and the amount of substance in moles:
