For “explain” questions, the mark scheme awards one mark for the observation and one for the chemistry reason, so never write a lone prediction. A classic January-series trap is asking “Explain why the rate doubles” — the mark scheme needs both “concentration of A doubles” and “rate is first order with respect to A”.

Every balanced equation in the mark scheme carries two marks: one for correct formulae and one for correct balancing and state symbols. A single wrong coefficient forfeits the whole balancing mark. In organic questions, the mark scheme also requires structural or displayed formulae to be unambiguous — writing C₄H₉Br instead of CH₃CHBrCH₂CH₃ will not score the structure mark.

The mark scheme awards one mark for the correct form of the equation, one mark for the correct order with respect to A, and one for the correct order with respect to B. A common error is writing the orders as stoichiometric coefficients from a balanced equation — this only works for elementary single-step reactions, which AQA will state clearly if intended.

The rate-determining step (RDS) is the slowest step in a multi-step mechanism. The mark scheme rewards two key ideas: the RDS is slow, and only species appearing in the rate equation can appear in the RDS or in an earlier equilibrium producing it. If rate = k[CH₃Br][OH⁻], then the RDS must involve both CH₃Br and OH⁻ in a bimolecular collision.

A June-style follow-up asks why the same volume of thiosulfate must be used each time: it fixes the amount of iodine produced before the colour change, so the time is a measure of the same extent of reaction.

AQA marks this “units consistent with the Kc expression”.

If water appears as a liquid in a heterogeneous equilibrium, it is omitted from Kc, and examiners award the expression mark only if no liquid term appears.
