📚 CIE IGCSE Design & Technology: Past Paper Decoding and Exam Strategy | CIE IGCSE
The CIE IGCSE Design & Technology written paper requires more than recalling facts. To reach the highest grades, you must show a disciplined design process: identify a need, write a specification, generate ideas, develop one idea, communicate it with drawings, and evaluate it. This article breaks down common examination requirements and gives step-by-step strategies for both short-answer and extended design questions.
1. Understanding the Examination Structure |
CIE IGCSE Design & Technology (0445) is assessed in two parts. Paper 1 is the written paper, worth 50% of the final mark. Your centre then enters you for one practical paper: Resistant Materials, Graphic Products, or Systems and Control, which makes up the other 50%. Paper 1 is usually 1 hour 15 minutes and contains short-answer questions plus one extended design question chosen from alternatives.
CIE IGCSE
In the written paper, Section A tests knowledge of the design process, materials, components and safety. Section B gives a design context and asks you to produce a specification, ideas, development and evaluation. Knowing this helps you allocate revision time: practise Section B as a timed task, not merely as drawing practice.
2. Reading the Design Context |
Past paper mark schemes reward candidates who answer the specific context. A context may say “A primary school needs a simple device to help young children practise balancing.” Many candidates copy a generic playground balance beam and ignore the classroom, cost and safety constraints. You must read for nouns, adjectives and numbers.
Ask yourself: Who is the user? What is the environment? What must the product do? What materials and tools are available? What are the production quantities? What is the cost limit? Underline these clues in the question and repeat them in your specification.
3. Design Brief and Specification |
A design brief is a clear statement of what you will design and for whom. It is not a copied version of the exam question. For example, if the context is a portable storage box for students, a strong brief is: “To design and make a low-cost storage box that enables a teenager to store four to six textbooks in a small bedroom.”
A specification is a list of measurable requirements. Do not write vague phrases such as “it must look nice” or “it must be safe.” Instead, use testable points: “The product must have a capacity of at least 400 mm × 300 mm × 150 mm” or “The product must have no sharp corners with a radius greater than 2 mm.”
Useful prompts help you cover the specification: Aesthetics, Cost, Customer, Environment, Size, Safety, Function, Materials. Many exam questions reward this kind of structured thinking.
4. Research and User Needs |
Research in the written paper is often tested indirectly through the design question. A high-scoring candidate will mention user research, such as interviewing a teacher, measuring children’s height, or investigating existing products. Always connect the research to a design decision.
For example: “I measured the storage space under a school desk and found it was 250 mm high. Therefore, the design must be no taller than 200 mm to allow easy sliding.”
Anthropometrics and ergonomics are also important. A product designed from real body measurements is more convincing. If the user is a child, use average hand size or reach distance in your answer.
5. Generating and Developing Ideas |
In extended design questions, examiners look for a clear difference between initial ideas and final development. Generate three or four different ideas with freehand sketches. Do not spend the whole time on one beautifully shaded drawing if the question asks for “ideas.”
Annotate every drawing. Each label should explain why a feature exists, how it works, or how it will be made. For example, “A circular hole provides a finger grip and reduces material use” is better than “hole.”
For development, choose one idea and add dimensions, materials,
