Drawing and Shifting Supply and Demand Curves |

📚 Drawing and Shifting Supply and Demand Curves |

Supply and demand analysis is the foundation of microeconomics and a guaranteed topic in every major exam board, including CAIE, Edexcel, and AQA. Mastering how to draw these curves correctly and knowing exactly what causes them to shift is essential for securing high marks in both data response and essay questions.

1. Why Supply and Demand Matter |

Every market transaction involves a buyer and a seller. The demand curve represents the buyer’s willingness and ability to purchase at various prices, while the supply curve represents the seller’s willingness and ability to sell. Their interaction determines the market price and quantity traded.

Diagrams are not merely illustrations in economics exams — they are analytical tools. Examiners award marks not just for the correct labels but for the accuracy of slopes, the correct identification of equilibrium, and the appropriate shifting of curves in response to changing conditions.

2. Drawing the Demand Curve |

The demand curve is drawn with price (P) on the vertical axis and quantity demanded (Q) on the horizontal axis. It slopes downward from left to right, reflecting the law of demand: as price falls, quantity demanded rises, and vice versa, ceteris paribus (all other things being equal).

When drawing, remember these key points: label both axes fully with “Price” and “Quantity” (or P and Q), label the curve as D or D₁, ensure the slope is smooth and clearly negative, and always indicate equilibrium points where relevant.

3. Shifts of the Demand Curve |

A shift of the demand curve occurs when a non-price factor changes. A rightward shift (from D₁ to D₂) indicates that at every price, consumers now demand a larger quantity. A leftward shift (from D₁ to D₃) indicates the opposite — at every price, consumers demand less.

The main causes of a rightward shift in demand include: an increase in consumer income (for normal goods), a rise in the price of a substitute good, a fall in the price of a complementary good, a change in tastes and preferences in favour of the product, an increase in population, and expectations of higher future prices.

  • Increase in income → demand shifts right (normal goods) |
  • Price of substitutes rises → demand shifts right | 替代品价格上涨 → 需求右移
  • Price of complements falls → demand shifts right | 互补品价格下降 → 需求右移
  • Favourable change in tastes → demand shifts right | 偏好有利变化 → 需求右移

For inferior goods, an increase in income actually shifts demand to the left. Always analyse which type of good you are dealing with before drawing your diagram.

4. Drawing the Supply Curve |

The supply curve is drawn with price on the vertical axis and quantity supplied on the horizontal axis. It slopes upward from left to right, reflecting the law of supply: as price rises, quantity supplied rises, because producers are willing to supply more at higher prices to cover increasing marginal costs.

Label the vertical axis “Price” and the horizontal axis “Quantity” (or P and Q), label the curve as S or S₁, and ensure the slope is positive and clearly drawn. A steeper or flatter curve conveys different assumptions about elasticity — a point examiners often look for.

5. Shifts of the Supply Curve |

A shift of the supply curve occurs when a non-price factor affecting producers changes. A rightward shift (from S₁ to S₂) means producers are willing and able to supply more at every price. A leftward shift (from S₁ to S₃) means they supply less at every price.

Key causes of a rightward supply shift include: a fall in the cost of factors of production (lower wages, cheaper raw materials), technological improvements that increase productivity, a fall in indirect taxes or an increase in subsidies, an increase in the number of firms in the market, and favourable weather conditions (especially relevant for agricultural supply).

A leftward shift in supply is caused by the opposite factors: rising costs, higher taxes, reduced subsidies, exit of firms from the market, and adverse supply shocks such as natural disasters or disruption to supply chains.

6. Movement Along the Curve vs. Shift of the Curve | 沿曲线移动 vs. 曲线整体移动

This distinction is one of the most common sources of lost marks in economics exams. A movement along a demand or supply curve is caused exclusively by a change in the price of the good itself. For example, if the price of coffee rises from $3 to $5, the quantity demanded falls from 100 to 60 — this is a movement along the same demand curve, not a shift.

A shift of the curve, in contrast, is caused by a change in any non-price determinant. If consumer income rises and people buy more coffee at every price, the entire demand curve moves right. In your exam, always ask yourself: “Did the price of the good itself change, or did something else change?”

Price change → movement along the curve |
Non-price change → shift of the curve |

7. Market Equilibrium |

Market equilibrium occurs at the price where quantity demanded equals quantity supplied. In a diagram, this is the intersection point of the demand and supply curves, labelled E. The corresponding price is the equilibrium price (P*), and the corresponding quantity is the equilibrium quantity (Q*).

At equilibrium, there is no inherent tendency for the price to change. The market “clears” — every buyer who wants to buy at P* can find a seller, and every seller who wants to sell at P* can find a buyer. Disequilibrium occurs when the actual market price is above or below the equilibrium price, leading to excess supply or excess demand.

When drawing equilibrium, shade and label excess supply or excess demand if the exam question asks you to show a specific price. Label the areas clearly with “excess supply” or “shortage” to demonstrate your understanding of market adjustment.

8. Disequilibrium and Price Adjustment |

If the market price is above equilibrium, quantity supplied exceeds quantity demanded, creating excess supply (a surplus). Sellers will compete to dispose of their unsold stock by cutting prices, causing the price to fall until equilibrium is restored.

If the market price is below equilibrium, quantity demanded exceeds quantity supplied, creating excess demand (a shortage). Frustrated buyers bid the price up, and producers respond by increasing output, until the price rises to equilibrium.

In a free market, the price mechanism acts as a signal and an incentive that automatically pushes the market towards equilibrium. This automatic adjustment is a core concept in the study of competitive markets.

9. Worked Example: A Real-World Application |

Consider the market for electric vehicles (EVs). Suppose the government introduces a generous subsidy for EV manufacturers and simultaneously consumer incomes rise while petrol prices soar.

Step 1: Analyse supply — the subsidy lowers production costs, so the supply curve shifts right (S₁ → S₂). Step 2: Analyse demand — higher incomes and costlier petrol (a substitute) increase demand, shifting the demand curve right (D₁ → D₂). Step 3: Draw both shifts on the same diagram. Equilibrium quantity unambiguously increases (Q₁ → Q₂), but the effect on equilibrium price is ambiguous — it depends on the relative magnitude of the two shifts.

Drawing both curves shifting simultaneously is a common exam scenario. Show the new equilibrium clearly with dashed lines, and explain the ambiguity in price change with the phrase “depends on the relative size of the shifts.”

10. Common Exam Mistakes and Tips |

Students frequently lose marks for minor diagram errors that are entirely avoidable. The most common mistakes include: drawing axes without labels, forgetting to label the curves, drawing a supply curve with a negative slope, confusing a movement along the curve with a shift of the curve, and failing to show the new equilibrium after a shift.

Another common error is explaining a shift with a price change. Never say “the demand curve shifts because the price rises” — a price rise causes a movement along the demand curve, not a shift. Instead, refer to income, tastes, substitute prices, complementary prices, population, or future expectations.

Always use a ruler for straight-line versions of curves, draw curves large enough to show intersections clearly, and use a pencil so you can correct mistakes. Practise drawing each diagram at least five times until you can produce it quickly and accurately under timed exam conditions.

Finally, label every shift with an arrow and a subscript — for example, “D₁ → D₂” — and annotate the direction of change in price and quantity at the equilibrium point. Detailed annotations signal clarity of thought to the examiner and reward you with method marks even if your diagram is imperfect.
