Drivers and Impacts of Population Change |

📚 Drivers and Impacts of Population Change |

Population change refers to the alteration in the size, structure, and distribution of a population over time. It is driven by three fundamental components: fertility, mortality, and migration. Understanding these drivers and their consequences is essential for planners, governments, and geographers, as population dynamics shape economies, societies, and environments.

1. Natural Change: Birth and Death Rates |

Natural change is the difference between the number of births and deaths in a population over a given period. The crude birth rate (CBR) is expressed as live births per 1,000 people per year, whereas the crude death rate (CDR) is deaths per 1,000 people per year. Natural increase occurs when CBR exceeds CDR, and natural decrease occurs when deaths outnumber births.

The rate of natural change is calculated as:

Natural increase rate (%) = (CBR − CDR) ÷ 10

For example, a country with a CBR of 20 and a CDR of 8 has a natural increase rate of 1.2% per year. This rate, combined with net migration, determines the overall growth of a population.

2. Determinants of Fertility |

Fertility levels are influenced by a complex web of economic, social, cultural, and political factors. In agricultural societies, children represent labour and security in old age, sustaining high fertility. Conversely, in industrial and post-industrial economies, children are costly to raise and compete with women’s employment opportunities, lowering desired family size.

  • Female education and empowerment: Higher educational attainment among women strongly correlates with lower fertility, as education delays childbearing and expands economic opportunities.

  • Infant and child mortality: Where child survival is uncertain, families have more children to compensate for potential losses.

  • Urbanisation: Urban life is associated with higher living costs, smaller housing, and greater access to contraception, all discouraging large families.

  • Religious and cultural norms: In some societies, religious teachings and traditional values promote large families and oppose birth control.

3. Determinants of Mortality |

Mortality rates reflect the health status, nutrition, sanitation, and medical infrastructure of a population. The demographic transition in most countries began with falling death rates, driven by improvements in public health, vaccination, clean water supplies, and food security.

  • Healthcare provision: Better access to doctors, hospitals, and medicines reduces deaths from treatable diseases.

  • Sanitation and hygiene: Clean water and proper sewage disposal prevent water-borne diseases such as cholera and dysentery.

  • Nutrition: Adequate food supply and dietary diversity reduce malnutrition and strengthen immunity against infection.

  • Epidemics and emergencies: Outbreaks of disease, conflict, and natural disasters can temporarily or permanently raise death rates.

4. Migration as a Component of Population Change |

Migration alters population size and structure locally and nationally. Net migration is the difference between immigration (in-migration) and emigration (out-migration). Migrants tend to be young adults, so migration also changes the age structure of both origin and destination regions.

Migration is driven by push factors in the origin and pull factors in the destination:
