Success in Edexcel A-Level Drama and Theatre demands more than enthusiasm on stage. You must understand how marks are awarded and how to demonstrate each assessment objective in both your internally assessed (IA) devising work and the written unit paper.
The same principle applies to every task: show how theatre is made, how it communicates meaning, and how an audience receives it. This article gives you a complete strategy for the IA process and the written exam, based on the Edexcel specification.
1. Understand the Specification and Assessment Objectives |
Before you plan a single scene, print the Edexcel specification and highlight every assessment objective (AO). Each component is weighted differently, and examiners reward precise engagement with the wording of each objective.
- AO1: Create and develop ideas to communicate meaning for theatrical performance. | AO1:
- AO2: Apply theatrical skills to realise artistic intentions in live performance. | AO2:
- AO3: Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of how drama and theatre is developed and performed. | AO3:
- AO4: Analyse and evaluate their own work and the work of others. | AO4:
In your devising IA, you are mainly judged on AO1, AO2 and AO4. In the written Theatre Makers in Practice unit, AO3 and AO4 form the core. Always connect your sentences back to the wording of the objective.
Use the mark scheme as a revision checklist. If it uses the word “sophisticated” at the top level, ask yourself what evidence would make your work feel sophisticated rather than merely correct.
2. Devising from a Stimulus: The IA Process |
The IA devising unit begins with a stimulus such as a photograph, poem, object or news article. Examiners want to see a clearly documented journey from stimulus to performance, not a random collection of ideas.
Choose a stimulus that genuinely provokes a theatrical question. Ask yourself: What social, political or personal conflict does this image or text contain? What do I want the audience to feel?
Keep a working notebook or digital log from the first workshop. Record wrong ideas as well as successful ones; the development of your thinking is part of the evidence.
Do not settle for the first obvious interpretation. If your stimulus is a crowded train station, the first idea might be “people are lonely”. Push further: How does physical proximity frame that loneliness? Which character has power to leave? What happens when the train stops?
3. Documenting the Devising Log |
The devising log is not a diary of what you did; it is an analytical and evaluative document that explains why you made choices and how effective they were. Use the headings required by the specification and keep your writing focused on the assessment objectives.
- Research and influences: show how you explored your stimulus and what you learned. |
- Development and collaboration: explain how ideas changed through discussion and improvisation. |
- Analysis and evaluation: judge which moments worked and which needed reworking. |
Quote specific moments from rehearsals. Instead of writing “we experimented with pace”, write “we slowed the final beat-down to one gesture per second to make the power dynamic
