1. Understanding the Exam Structure |

The Edexcel GCSE English Literature course is assessed by two written examinations. Both are closed-book, which means you do not take copies of your texts into the exam room; you must rely on your memory of key quotations. Paper 1, ‘Shakespeare and Post-1914 Literature’, lasts 1 hour 45 minutes and is worth 80 marks. Paper 2, ’19th-century Novel and Poetry since 1789′, also lasts 1 hour 45 minutes and is worth 80 marks. In both papers you are expected to answer extract-based questions and essay questions that connect extracts to the whole text.
