The International Energy Agency defines energy security as the uninterrupted availability of energy sources at an affordable price. In academic geography, this is often expanded into four dimensions known as the ‘4 As’: availability, accessibility, affordability, and acceptability.

Availability refers to the physical existence of sufficient reserves or supply. Affordability means that energy prices remain stable and within the reach of households and industries. Acceptability involves the environmental and social legitimacy of energy sources.
