English Summary Writing: How to Capture Key Information | 英语概要写作:如何抓住关键信息

📚 English Summary Writing: How to Capture Key Information | 英语概要写作:如何抓住关键信息

Summary writing is one of the most essential skills in English academic study, especially for students preparing for A-Level examinations. It tests not only your reading comprehension but also your ability to identify, condense, and rephrase essential information accurately and concisely.

概要写作是英语学术学习中最重要的技能之一,尤其对于备考A-Level的学生而言。它不仅考查你的阅读理解能力,还考查你准确识别、浓缩和改写关键信息的能力。

1. Understand the Purpose of a Summary | 理解概要写作的目的

A summary is a shortened version of a text that contains only the main points, written in your own words. It must be objective, accurate, and significantly shorter than the original. The purpose is not to reproduce the text, but to demonstrate that you have understood its core message.

概要是原文的缩减版本,仅包含要点,并用你自己的语言写出。它必须客观、准确,并且明显比原文简短。其目的不是复制原文,而是证明你已经理解了原文的核心信息。

For A-Level English, summary tasks usually require you to read one or more passages and produce a response within a specified word limit. Markers look for three things: relevance (did you include only key points?), brevity (did you stay within the word limit?), and accuracy (did you rephrase correctly without changing meaning?).

在A-Level英语考试中,概要写作任务通常要求你阅读一篇或多篇文章,并在规定的字数限制内写出答案。阅卷人关注三点:相关性(你是否只包含了要点?)、简洁性(是否在字数限制内?)和准确性(是否在不改变原意的前提下正确改写?)。

2. Read Actively Before You Write | 动笔前主动阅读

Active reading is the foundation of good summary writing. Before you write anything, read the passage carefully at least twice. On the first reading, aim to get a general idea of the text. Ask yourself: What is the topic? What is the writer’s main argument or purpose? What is the overall structure of the text?

主动阅读是写好概要的基础。在动笔之前,至少要仔细阅读原文两遍。第一遍阅读,目的是了解文章大意。问自己:主题是什么?作者的主要论点或目的是什么?文章的整体结构是怎样的?

On the second reading, annotate the text. Underline key sentences, highlight topic sentences, and make brief notes in the margins. Look for repeated ideas and signal words such as ‘therefore’, ‘however’, ‘in addition’, and ‘as a result’, as these often indicate important relationships between ideas. Active reading transforms you from a passive receiver of words into an active interpreter of meaning.

第二遍阅读时,请在原文上做标记。在关键句下划线,标出主题句,并在页边处做简要笔记。寻找重复出现的观点以及诸如“因此”“然而”“此外”“结果”等信号词,因为这些通常表明观点之间的重要关系。主动阅读使你从被动的文字接收者转变为主动的意义诠释者。

3. Identify the Main Idea of Each Paragraph | 找出每个段落的主旨

Most well-written paragraphs contain one central idea, usually expressed in a topic sentence. This sentence often appears at the beginning or end of the paragraph, although it can occasionally be found in the middle. Once you locate the topic sentence, you have found the paragraph’s main idea. Everything else—examples, explanations, statistics, and anecdotes—is supporting detail.

大多数结构良好的段落都包含一个中心思想,通常由主题句表达。这个句子通常出现在段落的开头或结尾,但偶尔也会出现在段落中间。一旦找到主题句,你就找到了该段的主旨。其余内容——例证、解释、数据、轶事——都是支撑细节。

For example, consider a paragraph that begins with the sentence: ‘The industrial revolution transformed British society in profound ways.’ The rest of the paragraph likely provides examples of this transformation. In your summary, you would simply note that the industrial revolution had a profound impact on British society, without listing every example. Always look for the general statement before the specific details.

例如,有一个段落以这样一句话开头:“工业革命深刻地改变了英国社会。”该段其余部分很可能提供了这种变革的具体例子。在概要中,你只需指出工业革命对英国社会产生了深远影响,而无需罗列每一个例子。务必先找概括性陈述,再看具体细节。

4. Distinguish Between Main Points and Supporting Details | 区分要点与支撑细节

One of the biggest mistakes students make is including too much detail in their summaries. To avoid this, you must learn to classify information. Main points are the essential ideas that the passage cannot exist without. Supporting details include examples (for instance, such as), statistics (70 percent, one in three), anecdotes (personal stories), quotations, and repetitive explanations.

学生最容易犯的错误之一就是在概要中包含了过多的细节。为了避免这一点,你必须学会对信息进行分类。要点是文章不可缺少的核心观点。支撑细节包括例子(例如、比如)、数据(70%、三分之一)、轶事(个人故事)、引语和重复性的解释。

Here is a quick test: if you remove a piece of information from the passage and the meaning of the passage still stands, that information is a supporting detail, not a main point. For instance, if a passage argues that social media harms teenage mental health and then cites a study from a university, the argument is the main point while the study is supporting evidence. Your summary should keep the argument and omit the study.

这里有一个快速测试:如果你从文章中删去一条信息,而文意仍然完整,那么该信息就是支撑细节,而非要点。例如,如果一篇文章论述社交媒体损害青少年心理健康,然后引用了一项大学研究,那么论点是要点,而研究是支撑证据。你的概要应保留论点,删去研究。

5. Use the ‘Wh-Question’ Technique | 运用“Wh-问题”技巧

A powerful method for extracting key information is to ask Wh-questions: Who? What? When? Where? Why? How? These questions help you identify the fundamental components of any passage. For a factual text, answering these questions gives you the core facts. For an argumentative text, asking ‘What is claimed?’ ‘Why is it claimed?’ and ‘What evidence supports it?’ reveals the logical skeleton.

提取关键信息的一个有效方法是提出Wh-问题:谁?什么?何时?何地?为什么?怎样?这些问题能帮助你识别任何文章的基本组成部分。对于事实性文本,回答这些问题即可获得核心事实。对于议论文,问“主张是什么?”“为什么这样主张?”“有什么证据支持?”可以揭示逻辑骨架。

Consider the following passage: ‘Due to rising sea levels caused by climate change, the government of Indonesia announced plans to relocate its capital from Jakarta to a new city on the island of Borneo. The move aims to reduce overcrowding and environmental damage.’ The Wh-questions reveal: Who? the Indonesian government. What? relocating the capital. Why? rising sea levels, overcrowding, and environmental damage. Where? from Jakarta to Borneo. These answers form the backbone of your summary.

考虑下面这段话:“由于气候变化导致海平面上升,印度尼西亚政府宣布计划将其首都从雅加达迁往婆罗洲岛上的一个新城市。此举旨在减少过度拥挤和环境破坏。”Wh-问题揭示出:谁?印度尼西亚政府。什么?迁移首都。为什么?海平面上升、过度拥挤和环境破坏。何地?从雅加达到婆罗洲。这些答案构成了概要的主干。

6. Master Paraphrasing | 掌握转述改写

Paraphrasing is the art of expressing the same meaning using different words. It is essential in summary writing because copying the original wording directly may be penalised or may cause you to exceed the word limit. Effective paraphrasing involves changing vocabulary (using synonyms), changing sentence structure (active to passive, or combining sentences), and changing word forms (nouns to verbs).

转述改写是用不同词语表达相同含义的艺术。它在概要写作中至关重要,因为直接抄录原文措辞可能会被扣分,或导致超出字数限制。有效的转述改写包括变换词汇(使用同义词)、变换句式(主动变被动,或合并句子)以及变换词性(名词变动词)。

For example, the original sentence ‘The rapid expansion of urban areas has resulted in significant environmental degradation’ could be paraphrased as ‘Rapid urban growth has badly damaged the environment.’ Notice that the paraphrase is shorter, uses simpler vocabulary, and keeps the core meaning intact. When paraphrasing, however, be careful not to change the original meaning or to introduce your own opinions.

例如,原句“城市地区的快速扩展已导致严重的环境退化”可以改写成“快速的城市增长严重破坏了环境。”注意改写后的句子更短、用词更简单,并完整保留了核心含义。但改写时请务必小心,不要改变原意,也不要引入自己的观点。

7. Group Related Ideas Together | 将相关观点归类合并

After identifying the key points, you should group related ideas before writing your summary. This prevents repetition and creates a more coherent response. For example, if a passage mentions three separate negative effects of plastic pollution on marine life, group them into one sentence: ‘Plastic pollution harms marine life in several ways, including entanglement, ingestion, and habitat destruction.’

在识别出要点之后,你应该在写概要之前将相关观点归类。这样可以避免重复,使答案更具连贯性。例如,如果一篇文章提到塑料污染对海洋生物的三个单独负面影响,可以将它们合并为一句话:“塑料污染以多种方式危害海洋生物,包括缠绕、误食和栖息地破坏。”

Grouping also helps you meet word count requirements. Instead of writing three separate points with three separate explanations, you can combine them efficiently. Look for connections between paragraphs: do several paragraphs discuss causes? Do several discuss effects? Are there multiple solutions to one problem? Organising your summary by themes rather than by paragraph order often produces a stronger response.

归类还有助于满足字数要求。与其分别写出三个要点并附三种解释,不如将它们高效合并。寻找段落之间的联系:是否有多个段落讨论原因?是否有多个段落讨论影响?同一个问题是否有多种解决方案?按照主题而不是按段落顺序组织概要,往往能写出更好的答案。

8. Use Logical Connectors for Cohesion | 使用逻辑连接词增强连贯性

A summary is not merely a list of sentences; it must flow as a unified paragraph. Logical connectors such as ‘firstly’, ‘moreover’, ‘however’, ‘therefore’, and ‘in conclusion’ help link ideas and signal the relationship between them. These connectors improve the coherence of your writing and make it easier for the reader to follow your thought process.

概要不仅仅是句子的罗列;它必须作为一个整体段落连贯流畅。诸如“首先”“此外”“然而”“因此”和“总之”等逻辑连接词有助于连接观点,并表明它们之间的关系。这些连接词能提高文章连贯性,使读者更容易跟上你的思路。

However, be cautious not to overuse them. A good summary uses connectors sparingly, only where necessary to show contrast, addition, or cause and effect. For example, you might write: ‘The study identifies several causes of obesity. Firstly, increased consumption of processed food. Secondly, a more sedentary lifestyle. However, the author argues that individual responsibility remains the key factor.’ Notice how the connectors create a clear logical flow.

但切勿过度使用。好的概要有节制地使用连接词,只在需要表明对比、递进或因果关系时使用。例如,你可以这样写:“该研究确定了肥胖的几种原因。首先是加工食品消费的增加。其次是久坐不动的生活方式。然而,作者认为个人责任仍然是关键因素。”注意连接词如何创造出清晰的逻辑流。

9. Stay Within the Word Limit | 严格控制在字数限制内

Word count discipline is a critical skill in summary writing. In most A-Level examinations, the summary task specifies a maximum number of words, often between 100 and 150. Exceeding this limit can result in lost marks, as markers will ignore the words beyond the limit. Therefore, you must learn to write concisely without sacrificing meaning.

字数控制是概要写作中的一项关键技能。在大多数A-Level考试中,概要任务会规定一个最大字数,通常在100到150词之间。超出限制会失分,因为阅卷人会忽略超出限制的字数。因此,你必须学会在不牺牲含义的前提下简洁写作。

To reduce word count, you can: remove adjectives and adverbs that are not essential; replace phrases with single words (‘due to the fact that’ becomes ‘because’); omit examples and statistics; avoid repeating ideas in different words; and use the minimum number of supporting details. After writing your first draft, count your words and then edit aggressively. Every word must earn its place in your summary.

为减少字数,你可以:删除非必要的形容词和副词;用单个词替换短语(“由于……这一事实”变成“因为”);省略例子和数据;避免用不同词语重复同一观点;使用最少的支撑细节。完成后数一数字数,然后大刀阔斧地删改。每个词都必须靠自己的价值在概要中保有一席之地。

10. Revise and Edit Your Draft | 修订并编辑草稿

Writing the first draft is not the end of the summary process. Revision is where you refine your work and catch errors. After drafting, leave your summary for a few minutes if possible, then return to it with fresh eyes. Read it aloud to check for awkward phrasing, unclear meaning, or grammatical mistakes. Ask yourself: Does this accurately reflect the source text? Have I used my own words? Have I included any personal opinions?

写出初稿并非概要写作的终点。修订才是你完善作品、发现错误的时候。完成草稿后,如果可能的话,先放几分钟,再以全新的眼光回看。大声朗读出来,检查是否有生硬的措辞、不清的含义或语法错误。问自己:这准确反映了原文吗?我使用了自己的语言吗?我有没有掺入个人观点?

Check for the following common problems: missing key points (compare your summary against your list of main ideas); irrelevant content (sentences that are not directly about the main topic); personal opinions (phrases like ‘I think’ or ‘in my view’); copied phrases from the original; and incorrect word count. Fix these issues and rewrite your summary until it is polished and precise.

检查以下常见问题:遗漏要点(将概要与你列出的主旨清单进行比对);无关内容(与主题不直接相关的句子);个人观点(如“我认为”或“在我看来”之类的短语);从原文照抄的短语;以及字数错误。修正这些问题并重写概要,直到语言精练、内容准确。

11. Common Pitfalls and How to Avoid Them | 常见陷阱及规避方法

Many students fall into predictable traps when writing summaries. One common mistake is copying too heavily from the original text, which not only risks plagiarism penalties but also shows a lack of understanding. Another mistake is including every detail, producing a summary that is as long as the original. A third mistake is adding information that was not in the source text, which introduces inaccuracy.

许多学生在写概要时会落入可预见的陷阱。一个常见错误是过度照抄原文,这不仅面临抄袭的处罚风险,也表明理解不够。另一个错误是事无巨细全部纳入,写出的概要几乎和原文一样长。第三个错误是添加原文没有的信息,这会引入不准确性。

To avoid these pitfalls, remember the golden rules: use your own words; focus only on the main ideas; never invent new content; maintain the original meaning; and always stay within the word limit with a small margin of safety. Additionally, do not insert your own evaluation or opinions about the topic, no matter how strongly you feel about it. A summary is a mirror, not a commentary.

为避免这些陷阱,请记住黄金法则:用自己的语言;只关注主旨;绝不编造新内容;保持原意;始终留出少量余地在字数限制内。此外,无论你对话题感受多么强烈,都不要在概要中加入自己的评价或观点。概要是镜子,不是评论。

12. Practical Exercises to Improve Your Skills | 提升技能的实用练习

Like all academic skills, summary writing improves with regular practice. One effective exercise is to take a newspaper article, summarise it in one sentence, then in one paragraph, then in one sentence again, forcing yourself to identify the central point. Another exercise is to swap summaries with a partner and check each other’s work for omitted points, excess detail, and copied language.

与所有学术技能一样,概要写作通过经常练习而提高。一个有效的练习是:取一篇新闻报道,先用一句话概括,再用一个段落概括,然后再压缩为一句话,迫使自己找出中心点。另一个练习是与同学交换概要,互相检查是否遗漏要点、是否包含过多细节、是否照抄原文。

You can also practise paraphrasing by rewriting the same sentence in three different ways, each time using different vocabulary and sentence structures. Timed practice is equally important: set a timer for 20 minutes and write a summary under examination conditions. Review your mistakes, categorise them, and target your weakest areas in the next session. Consistent, focused practice will transform your summary writing from a source of anxiety into a reliable strength.

你还可以通过用三种不同方式改写同一个句子来练习转述,每次使用不同的词汇和句式。限时训练同样重要:设定20分钟计时器,在模拟考试条件下写一篇概要。回顾错误,将它们分类,并在下一次练习中针对最薄弱的部分进行改进。持续而专注的练习将把概要写作从焦虑的源头转化为可靠的强项。
