📚 English Tense Exam Points & Problem-Solving Techniques | 英语时态考点归纳与解题技巧

English tenses represent one of the most tested grammar areas in every major examination, from GCSE to A-Level and beyond. Mastering the tense system is not merely about memorising conjugation tables; it requires understanding the temporal logic that connects verb forms to time expressions, completed actions, ongoing processes, and future intentions.

英语时态是所有主流考试(从 GCSE 到 A-Level 乃至更高层次)中考查最频繁的语法板块之一。掌握时态并不仅仅是背诵动词变化表,而是需要理解连接动词形式与时间表达、已完成动作、持续过程及未来意图之间的时间逻辑。

1. The Tense System Overview | 英语时态体系概览

English has twelve core tenses formed by combining three time frames (past, present, future) with four aspects (simple, continuous, perfect, perfect continuous). Many exam questions test whether candidates can correctly identify which aspect matches the intended meaning.

英语共有十二种核心时态,由三个时间框架(过去、现在、将来)与四种体态(一般、进行、完成、完成进行)组合而成。许多考题考查考生能否正确辨别哪种体态与题目想要表达的意义相匹配。

Each tense carries a distinct temporal meaning. The simple aspect emphasises facts and routines; the continuous aspect highlights ongoing activity; the perfect aspect connects a past action to a later reference point; and the perfect continuous combines duration with continuity.

每种时态都有独特的时间含义。一般体强调事实与习惯;进行体突出动作正在进行;完成体将过去的动作与之后的时间参照点相联系;完成进行体则结合了持续时长与连续性。

2. Present Simple vs Present Continuous | 一般现在时与现在进行时

The present simple describes permanent states, habitual actions, and universal truths. Signal words include always, usually, often, sometimes, never, every day, and once a week. For example: ‘Water boils at 100 °C.’

一般现在时描述永久状态、习惯性动作和普遍真理。常见信号词包括 always、usually、often、sometimes、never、every day、once a week 等。例如:‘Water boils at 100 °C.’(水在 100 摄氏度时沸腾。)

The present continuous describes actions happening at or around the moment of speaking, temporary situations, and planned future arrangements. Signal words include now, right now, at the moment, and currently. For example: ‘She is revising for her A-Level English exam this week.’

现在进行时描述说话时刻正在发生或前后一段时期进行的动作、临时状况以及已计划的未来安排。信号词包括 now、right now、at the moment、currently 等。例如:‘She is revising for her A-Level English exam this week.’(她这周正在复习 A-Level 英语考试。)

Key rule: Stative verbs such as know, believe, belong, prefer, and own do not normally appear in continuous forms. Instead of saying ‘I am knowing the answer’, we say ‘I know the answer’.

关键规则:状态动词(如 know、believe、belong、prefer、own)通常不用于进行体。不能说 ‘I am knowing the answer’,而应说 ‘I know the answer’

3. Present Perfect vs Past Simple | 现在完成时与一般过去时

The past simple is used for actions completed at a specific time in the past. It is commonly accompanied by definite time markers: yesterday, last week, in 2019, two days ago. Example: ‘I visited the British Museum in 2019.’

一般过去时用于在过去某个具体时间已经完成的动作,常与确定的时间标志搭配:yesterday、last week、in 2019、two days ago 等。例如:‘I visited the British Museum in 2019.’(我在 2019 年参观了大英博物馆。)

The present perfect connects a past action to the present moment. It is used for experiences (ever, never), recently completed actions (just), unfinished time periods (today, this year), and past actions with present results. Example: ‘I have already finished my coursework.’

现在完成时将过去的动作与现在时刻相联系,用于表示经历(ever、never)、刚完成的动作(just)、未结束的时间段(today、this year)以及对现在产生影响的过去动作。例如:‘I have already finished my coursework.’(我已经完成了课程作业。)

Exam tip: If the time phrase refers to a finished period (yesterday, last night, in 2019), use the past simple. If the time phrase includes the present (today, this week, since 2020), use the present perfect.

考试技巧:如果时间短语指向已结束的时段(yesterday、last night、in 2019),用一般过去时;如果时间短语包含现在(today、this week、since 2020),用现在完成时。

4. The Past Tense Family | 过去时态家族

Past tenses often appear together in narrative writing. The past continuous sets a background scene, while the past simple interrupts with a shorter action. Example: ‘I was walking to the library when I met my friend.’

过去时态在叙事中经常搭配使用。过去进行时铺陈背景场景,一般过去时用于插入一个较短暂的动作。例如:‘I was walking to the library when I met my friend.’(我正走去图书馆时遇到了我的朋友。)

The past perfect places an action before another past action. It is essential for showing chronological order. Example: ‘The train had already left
