Diffusion is the net movement of particles from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration, down a concentration gradient. Active transport is the movement of particles from a lower to a higher concentration, against a concentration gradient, using energy from respiration. These three processes are often mixed up, so it is essential to compare them directly.

You should be able to give examples of each process: gas exchange in the alveoli and leaves involves diffusion; water uptake by root hair cells involves osmosis; root mineral ion absorption uses active transport.
