📚 IPC Physics: Phenomenon Explanation Questions – Key Points & Answering Methods | IPC

Phenomenon explanation questions appear in nearly every IPC physics assessment. They present a real-life observation and ask you to use physics to explain it. These questions are not about memorising facts – they test your ability to think like a scientist and communicate your reasoning clearly.

1. What Are Phenomenon Explanation Questions? |

A phenomenon explanation question gives you an everyday event – such as a puddle drying up, a shadow moving, or a bulb lighting – and asks you to “explain why” or “use the idea of … to explain this observation.” The mark scheme rewards three things: the correct physics principle, the correct link to the situation, and precise scientific language.

These questions usually carry 2 to 4 marks in IPC tests. That means the examiner expects two to four connected points. A single vague sentence cannot earn full marks, and an unconnected list of facts will also lose credit.

2. Key Points Assessed |

IPC phenomenon questions assess four distinct skills. You need all four to score highly.

First, recall of the correct principle. You must name the exact physics idea involved, such as evaporation, air pressure, friction, or energy transfer. Without the correct principle, no credit is given even if your description is detailed.

Second, application to the exact situation. A generic definition of evaporation does not explain why a puddle dries faster on a windy day. You must mention wind removing water vapour and speeding up evaporation.

Third, a logical cause-and-effect chain. You must connect the principle to the observation step by step, using connectives such as “because”, “therefore”, and “this means that”. The examiner needs to see each stage of your thinking.

Fourth, correct scientific vocabulary. Use “evaporation” not “drying up”, “air pressure” not “sucking force”, “energy transfer” not “power flow”. Precise words show precise understanding.

3. Common Question Types |

IPC phenomenon questions appear in several formats. Knowing the format helps you choose the right response structure.

Question Type What It Asks Example Stem
Cause explanation Give the reason for an observed event “Why does a balloon expand when left in the sun?”
Prediction + explanation State what will happen, then explain why “What will happen to the ice cube in the warm room? Explain your answer.”
Comparison Explain why two situations differ “Why does the metal cup feel colder than the plastic cup?”
Evaluation Judge a statement and justify your view “A student says the bulb is broken because the battery is flat. Do you agree?”

Watch the command words carefully. “Explain” requires a reason. “Predict” requires an outcome first and a reason second. “Describe” only asks for what is happening. “Suggest” allows a plausible idea, not necessarily the textbook one.

A common IPC trick is to hide a physics principle inside a familiar object. A bicycle reflects light (reflection), a whistle produces sound (vibration), a shadow changes length (light travels in straight lines). Train yourself to ask: “Which physics idea is hiding in this object?”

4. The PEC Answering Framework | PEC

The PEC framework keeps your answers organised and complete. It has three parts.

Principle → Evidence → Conclusion

P – Principle. Name the physics law or idea in one clear sentence. For example: “Warm air rises because it is less dense than cold air.” This shows the examiner which concept you are using.

E – Evidence. Connect the principle to details written in the question. Mention the actual objects, temperatures, materials, or conditions given. This proves you are not just repeating a memorised definition.

C – Conclusion. End with the observed result, clearly linked to your principle and evidence. Use “therefore” or “so” to signal the final step.

For a 3-mark question, aim for three sentences: one for P, one for E, one for C. For a 4-mark question, expand E into two sentences or add a second principle.

5. Step-by-Step Answering Method |

Follow these five steps in the exam. With practice, the whole process takes less than two minutes per question.

  • Step 1: Read the question twice and underline all keywords. Circle the object, the action, and the command word. This prevents you from answering the wrong question.
  • Step 2: Identify the physics principle. Ask: “What topic in my notes does this belong to?” Force, energy, light, sound, electricity, materials – pick the one section that fits.
  • Step 3: Build the P-E-C chain in your head. Say it quietly to yourself before writing. If your chain has a gap, fill it before you put pen to paper.
  • Step 4: Write in full sentences. Use the connectives “because”, “so”, and “this means that”. Do not use bullet points unless the question allows them.
  • Step 5: Check the mark value. If the question is worth 3 marks, you need at least 3 distinct linked ideas. Tick each sentence as you re-read your answer.

The most common time-management error is writing a long introduction to the topic. Do not do this. Start directly with the principle and answer the question in the first sentence.

6. Using Scientific Language |

IPC examiners reward the use of scientific terms. Everyday words are often too vague to earn marks. The table below shows common upgrades.

Everyday Word Scientific Word Why It Matters
coldness heat energy transfer / low temperature Cold is not a substance; it is a lack of heat energy.
sucking force air pressure difference No object “sucks”; higher pressure pushes.
bounces off reflects / changes direction Reflection is the precise light behaviour.
gets hot temperature rises / gains heat energy “Gets hot” is informal; “temperature rises” is measurable.
push / pull force / exerts a force Force is the scientific name for a push or pull.
