Geographical investigation lies at the heart of A-Level Geography. Whether you are studying river processes, urban regeneration, coastal management, or changing rural environments, the quality of your conclusions depends on how well you collect, analyse, and interpret data. Examiners explicitly reward candidates who demonstrate confident use of both qualitative and quantitative fieldwork skills, from semi-structured interviews and annotated field sketches to statistical tests and GIS mapping.

Qualitative data describes characteristics that cannot be easily measured numerically. This type of data is rich in depth and meaning, but it is subjective and difficult to generalise. It is often recorded as words, photographs, sketches, or audio recordings.

Quantitative data, by contrast, consists of numerical measurements that can be counted, ordered, and statistically analysed. Quantitative data enables rigorous, objective, and replicable analysis, though it may lack the contextual depth that qualitative approaches provide.

Every successful investigation begins with a clear aim and a set of testable hypotheses. For example, in a river study, you might hypothesise H₁: ‘The mean pebble size decreases downstream.’ A well-designed investigation also considers the type of data needed, the sampling frame, the equipment required, and the risk assessment.
