In human geography, a ‘place’ is far more than a point on a map. It is a complex bundle of meanings, experiences, and material realities that are constantly being shaped and reshaped by different actors. Understanding how places are represented, and how we can investigate them using different types of evidence, lies at the heart of the A-level geography syllabus.

Place representation refers to the ways in which a place is portrayed, perceived, and communicated through different media and by different groups. These representations may be formal, such as tourist brochures or planning documents, or informal, such as social media posts or word-of-mouth anecdotes. They may reinforce or challenge the ‘real’ character of a place.

The representation does not fully match the lived experience.

2. Quantitative vs Qualitative Data in Geography | 地理学中的定量与定性数据

To investigate place representation, geographers use two broad families of data. Quantitative data are numerical and can be counted, measured, and statistically analysed. Examples include population density, house prices, crime rates, and the number of positive or negative words in a corpus of social media posts. Quantitative data allow comparison, trend identification, and hypothesis testing.

3. Quantitative Data: Sources and Techniques | 定量数据:来源与技术

Common quantitative sources in place studies include the national census, which provides decadal data on population structure, ethnicity, housing tenure, and employment. Other sources include government statistics on deprivation (e.g. the English Indices of Multiple Deprivation), property transaction records, transport usage data, and environmental monitoring data.

4. Qualitative Data: Sources and Techniques | 定性数据:来源与技术

Qualitative data often come from semi-structured or unstructured interviews, focus groups, participant observation, personal diaries, oral histories, and archival documents such as newspaper articles and planning appeals. Visual methods — photography, video, and mental maps — are also powerful tools for revealing how people perceive and represent place.

For example, asking residents to draw a mental map of their neighbourhood can reveal which spaces they consider central or marginal, safe or dangerous, familiar or unknown. Similarly, analysing the words used in estate-agent advertisements can reveal how a place is commodified — e.g. ‘leafy’, ‘exclusive’, ‘up-and-coming’ — and which audiences are being targeted.

Qualitative data are rich, but they are also subjective and difficult to generalise. The researcher’s own positionality — background, identity, and assumptions — can influence what participants say and how the data are interpreted. Triangulation, using multiple methods and sources, helps to improve the credibility of qualitative findings.

5. Analysing Quantitative Data: Methods and Tests | 分析定量数据:方法与检验

Quantitative data analysis in geography typically begins with descriptive statistics: mean, median, mode, range, interquartile range, and standard deviation. These measures summarise the central tendency and spread of data, allowing comparisons between places. For example, the mean house price of two neighbourhoods may be similar, but their standard deviations may reveal very different degrees of inequality.

Inferential statistics allow geographers to test whether observed patterns are statistically significant. Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient measures the strength and direction of a relationship between two ranked variables, such as distance from city centre and vegetation quality.

The formula above shows Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient. Remember that correlation does not imply causation — a strong correlation between two variables does not prove that one causes the other. In examinations, you should always state the null hypothesis, check whether the calculated value exceeds the critical value at the chosen confidence level (usually 95% or p = 0.05), and draw a cautious conclusion.

Qualitative analysis is often misunderstood as ‘unscientific’. In fact, it follows systematic procedures. The first step is transcription of interviews or compilation of textual/visual material. The researcher then reads or views the material repeatedly to become familiar with it — this is called immersion.
