Understanding Marketing: Definition and Core Concepts |

📚 Understanding Marketing: Definition and Core Concepts |

Marketing is far more than advertising or selling. In A-Level Business studies, marketing is defined as the management process responsible for identifying, anticipating and satisfying customer requirements profitably. It is a strategic activity that begins before a product exists and continues long after a sale is made.

1. The Definition of Marketing |

The Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) defines marketing as: ‘The management process responsible for identifying, anticipating and satisfying customer requirements profitably.’ This definition emphasises three key elements: identifying what customers need, anticipating future needs, and satisfying them in a way that generates profit for the organisation.

Another widely used definition from Philip Kotler states that marketing is ‘a social and managerial process by which individuals and groups obtain what they need and want through creating and exchanging products and value with others.’ This broader view highlights exchange as the heart of marketing.

2. Needs, Wants and Demands |

Understanding the difference between needs, wants and demands is essential for marketing analysis. A human need is a state of felt deprivation, such as the need for food, shelter, safety or belonging. Needs are basic and universal.

Wants are culturally and personally shaped forms that needs take. For example, a person needs food, but may want a pizza, a salad or a bowl of noodles. Demands are wants backed by purchasing power. A consumer may want a luxury car, but only when they can afford it does the want become a demand.

Marketers do not create needs; they influence wants and stimulate demand by offering attractive products, pricing and promotion. Businesses must therefore research the target market carefully to convert basic needs into profitable demands.

3. Products and the Marketing Offer |

In marketing, a product is anything that can be offered to a market to satisfy a need or want. Products include physical goods, services, experiences, events, persons, places, organisations and ideas. This broad definition is sometimes called the ‘total product’ concept.

The ‘total product’ has several layers. The core benefit is what the customer is really buying. For example, a customer buying a drill is actually buying a hole. The actual product includes features, design, quality and packaging. The augmented product adds after-sales service, warranty, installation and delivery.

A useful way to remember the expanded product is the equation: Total product = Core benefit + Actual product + Augmented product. Businesses must differentiate their offer at all three levels to compete effectively.

4. Customer Value and Satisfaction |

Customer value is the difference between the benefits a customer receives from a product and the total costs of obtaining it. Perceived value is subjective: it depends on how each customer compares benefits and costs, including money, time, effort and risk.

Customer satisfaction occurs when the product’s perceived performance meets or exceeds the customer’s expectations. If performance falls short of expectations, the customer is dissatisfied. If it meets expectations, the customer is satisfied; if it exceeds them, the customer is delighted.

High satisfaction builds customer loyalty, encourages repeat purchasing and generates positive word-of-mouth. However, businesses must balance satisfaction with profitability. Delivering excessive value at too low a price may increase sales but destroy long-term profit.

5. Exchange and Transactions |

Exchange is the act of obtaining a desired object from someone by offering something in return. For an exchange to occur, five conditions must exist: at least two parties; something of value held by each party; ability to communicate and deliver; freedom to accept or reject the offer; and the desire to deal with the other party.

A transaction is a recorded exchange, measured in monetary terms or other forms of value. For example, buying a coffee with cash is a transaction; volunteering time to a charity is also an exchange, though not a commercial transaction. Marketers aim to build ongoing exchange relationships rather than one-off deals.

Modern marketing increasingly focuses on relationship marketing, which emphasises customer retention and lifetime value. A one-off transaction may earn a small profit, but a loyal customer who returns for years is far more valuable.

6. The Market and Market Segmentation |

A market is a set of actual and potential buyers of a product. In marketing, a market is not necessarily a physical place; it is any arrangement where buyers and sellers interact. Markets can be consumer markets, business-to-business markets, government markets or international markets.

Since customers within a market have diverse needs, businesses often use market segmentation: dividing a market into distinct groups with similar characteristics, needs or behaviours. Common bases for segmentation include geographic (region), demographic (age, income), psychographic (lifestyle) and behavioural (usage rate, loyalty).

Segmenting the market allows a business to target specific groups more precisely and position its product accordingly. For example, a car manufacturer may segment the market into economy, family, luxury and electric-vehicle buyers, each requiring a different marketing mix.

7. The Marketing Mix: 4Ps and 7Ps | 营销组合:4P与7P

The marketing mix is the set of controllable tactical marketing tools that a firm blends to produce the response it wants from the target market. The classic 4Ps are Product, Price, Place and Promotion. These four elements must be coordinated to create a consistent and compelling offer.

For service industries, the extended marketing mix adds three more Ps: People, Process and Physical evidence. People refers to employees who interact with customers; process refers to the procedures and flow of service delivery; physical evidence refers to the visible environment and materials that signal service quality.

In A-Level CIE Business, you are expected to analyse how the elements of the marketing mix support each other and how a change in one element affects the others. A low-price strategy, for instance, might require lower product quality or different distribution channels.

8. Marketing Orientations or Philosophies |

Businesses can adopt different orientations towards the market. The production concept focuses on producing goods efficiently and making them widely available. It works when demand exceeds supply or when the cost of production is high.

The product concept assumes that customers favour products with the best quality, performance and features, so the business focuses on continuous product improvement. The selling concept focuses on aggressive selling and promotion because managers assume that customers will not buy enough without a strong push.

The marketing concept holds that achieving organisational goals depends on knowing the needs and wants of target markets and delivering satisfaction more effectively than competitors. It is often summarised as ‘customer-first’ orientation. The societal marketing concept adds that the business should also preserve society’s long-term wellbeing, such as using sustainable packaging or ethical sourcing.

9. Marketing Objectives and Strategy |

Marketing objectives are measurable goals that a business sets for its marketing activities, such as increasing market share by 10% in two years, launching a new product or entering a new market. These objectives must be specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound (SMART).

Marketing strategy is the long-term plan for achieving marketing objectives. It involves selecting target markets and developing a sustainable competitive advantage through marketing mix decisions. A firm may choose a low-cost leadership strategy, a differentiation strategy, or a focus strategy.

An important distinction is between the target market selection strategy and the positioning of the product in the minds of consumers. Market positioning means creating a distinctive image of the product relative to competitors, such as Volvo’s safety positioning or Apple’s innovation positioning.

10. Markets and Competition in CIE Context | CIE

In CIE A-Level Business, you must apply marketing concepts to real-world case studies. This includes analysing how businesses respond to changes in consumer needs, technology, competitors and the wider environment. A useful framework for this is SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) applied to marketing.

一个有用的分析框架是将SWOT(优势、劣势、机会、威胁)应用于营销。

Marketing decisions are affected by external factors such as economic growth, interest rates, social trends and legal regulations. For example, a rise in health consciousness increases demand for low-sugar drinks, while a ban on plastic packaging forces firms to redesign their physical evidence and distribution.

To score high marks in CIE questions, you should define key terms clearly, use relevant examples, evaluate trade-offs between marketing costs and benefits, and recommend a marketing mix with justification. Always link your answer to the case data provided.
