Urbanisation — the increasing proportion of a population living in towns and cities — has been one of the most transformative global processes since 1945. From the post-war reconstruction of European cities to the explosive growth of megacities in the Global South, the patterns of urbanisation have shifted dramatically in both space and time.

1. Global Trends in Urbanisation |

In 1950, only 30% of the world’s population lived in urban areas. By 2020, this figure had surpassed 56%, and it is projected to reach nearly 68% by 2050. This represents a shift from a predominantly rural world to an urban one in just seven decades.

The pace of urbanisation, however, has not been uniform. Developed regions such as North America and Western Europe urbanised rapidly in the 19th and early 20th centuries, while many developing regions began their rapid urban transition only after the Second World War.

2. The Immediate Post-War Era (1945–1970): Reconstruction and Industrial Growth |

After 1945, Europe and Japan faced massive urban destruction. Reconstruction brought planned rebuilding, often prioritising housing, transport, and industrial zones. This period also saw strong rural-to-urban migration as industrial jobs concentrated in cities.

Meanwhile, in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, central planning dictated urban growth, with new industrial towns emerging around heavy industry sites. In North America, suburbanisation began to accelerate as car ownership rose and highways expanded.

3. The Rise of Suburbanisation in the Developed World (1950s–1980s) | 发达国家郊区的兴起(1950年代–1980年代)

Suburbanisation refers to the decentralisation of people and activities from the city centre to the outskirts. In the USA, the construction of the Interstate Highway System (from 1956), cheap fuel, and federal housing policies encouraged middle-class families to move to the suburbs.

In the UK and Western Europe, suburban growth was shaped by new town programmes and slum clearances. This often resulted in urban sprawl — the uncontrolled expansion of urban areas into the surrounding countryside.

4. Counter-Urbanisation (1970s–1990s) in Developed Regions |

Counter-urbanisation is the movement of population away from major cities to smaller towns and rural areas. In the 1970s, many large cities in the UK, USA, and Canada experienced population decline for the first time. Factors included high urban crime, congestion, environmental pollution, and the rise of footloose industries that did not need to be near to raw materials.

Improved transport and communication technologies, such as the growth of car ownership and later the internet, enabled people to live in rural areas while working in the city. This process was particularly marked in the UK, where London’s population fell from over 8 million in 1939 to around 6.8 million in 1981.

5. Rapid Urbanisation in the Global South (1950–present) |

Since 1950, the most dramatic urban growth has occurred in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. In 1950, only 17% of Asia’s population was urban; by 2020, the figure was over 50%. Africa’s urban population grew from 14% in 1950 to over 43% by 2020.

This urbanisation differs from the historical Western pattern in several ways. It has occurred far more rapidly, is less closely tied to industrialisation, and is driven by high rates of natural increase within cities as well as rural-to-urban migration. Many migrants are “pulled” by perceived opportunities but also “pushed” by rural poverty, landlessness, and agricultural mechanisation.

6. The Emergence of Megacities and Primate Cities |

A megacity is typically defined as an urban agglomeration with over 10 million inhabitants. In 1950, only New York and Tokyo had populations exceeding 10 million. By 2020, there were over 30 megacities, most of them in Asia, Africa, and Latin America — including Tokyo, Delhi, Shanghai, São Paulo, Mexico City, and Lagos.

Many developing countries are also characterised by a “primate city” — a city that is disproportionately larger and more influential than the second-largest city. Examples include Bangkok in Thailand, Paris in France, and London in the UK. Primate cities often dominate the political, economic, and cultural life of a country, leading to uneven regional development.

7. Re-Urbanisation and Gentrification (1980s–present) |

Re-urbanisation refers to the revival of cities that had previously experienced population decline. Starting in the 1980s in North America and Western Europe, inner-city areas attracted new investment, professional workers, and cultural activities. This process is closely linked to deindustrialisation, as old industrial sites were redeveloped into offices, apartments, and leisure spaces.

Gentrification is a specific form of this process in which working-class or run-down neighbourhoods are upgraded by wealthier middle-class incomers. While this can improve housing quality and local services, it often displaces original residents and raises property prices, creating social tension and inequality.

8. Economic and Environmental Consequences of Urbanisation |

Urbanisation has brought significant economic benefits. Cities act as engines of growth, driving innovation, productivity, and employment. Urban agglomeration economies — the benefits of firms locating near each other — reduce costs and foster knowledge spillovers. In many developing countries, urban jobs are essential for lifting people out of poverty.

However, rapid and poorly managed urban growth poses serious environmental problems. Urban areas generate more than 70% of global CO₂ emissions. Air pollution, waste overload, loss of green spaces, and urban heat islands are common. Many megacities in the Global South struggle with inadequate housing, slums, and a lack of clean water and sanitation.

9. Key Drivers of Urbanisation since 1945 | 1945年以来城市化的核心驱动力

Urbanisation = Natural Increase + Rural-to-Urban Migration

The two key demographic drivers are natural increase (births exceeding deaths within urban populations) and migration. In many developing cities, over 40% of population growth is due to natural increase, because migrants tend to be young adults of reproductive age.

  • Economic drivers: industrialisation, service-sector growth, and the informal economy.

  • Social drivers: better access to education, health care, and cultural amenities.

  • Political drivers: rural neglect, conflict, and forced resettlement.

  • Technological drivers: transport improvements, telecommunications, and digitalisation.

10. Comparative Urbanisation: Developed vs Developing Regions |

Urbanisation level (~2020) ~80% or above ~45–55%
Rate of growth Slow / stable Fast / accelerating
Main driver Counter-urbanisation / re-urbanisation Rural-to-urban migration + natural increase
Housing problems Affordability, gentrification Slums, informal settlements

This comparison shows that urbanisation is not a single uniform process. It is shaped by history, economics, government policy, and geography.

Almost 90% of future urban population growth will be concentrated in Asia and Africa. India, China, and Nigeria alone are expected to add over 400 million urban dwellers by 2050. In contrast, many cities in Europe and East Asia will face population decline or slow growth.

The concept of the “sustainable city” has become central to policy debates. Green infrastructure, compact city planning, and improved public transport are seen as ways to make urban growth more inclusive and environmentally friendly.

For A-Level geography, it is essential to understand these patterns not just as statistics but as outcomes of complex interactions between demographic, economic, social, and political forces operating at different scales — local, national, and global.
