Urbanisation: Social and Economic Problems |

📚 Urbanisation: Social and Economic Problems |

Urbanisation, the increasing proportion of a population living in towns and cities, is one of the most significant global trends of the 21st century. While it is a driver of economic growth, modernisation, and innovation, rapid urbanisation—particularly in low-income countries (LICs) and newly emerging economies (NEEs)—often outpaces the capacity of cities to provide adequate housing, employment, and basic services. This mismatch gives rise to a range of severe social and economic problems that affect millions of urban dwellers.

1. Housing Shortage and the Growth of Informal Settlements |

One of the first and most visible problems is the chronic shortage of affordable housing. As rural migrants flood into cities, demand for accommodation far exceeds supply, driving up rents and property prices beyond the reach of low-income households. Consequently, many are forced into overcrowded, substandard dwellings or onto the streets.

The most extreme manifestation of this problem is the proliferation of informal settlements, commonly known as slums, shantytowns, or favelas. These areas lack secure tenure, basic infrastructure, and safe water and sanitation. For example, in Mumbai, India, an estimated 40–60% of the population lives in such settlements, often in extremely cramped and hazardous conditions.

  • Overcrowding: multiple families may share a single room, increasing stress and disease transmission.

  • Insecurity: dwellers face eviction, property loss, and extreme weather events without formal protection.

2. Unemployment, Underemployment, and the Informal Sector |

Urbanisation is often associated with the promise of jobs, but the reality is that the formal labour market cannot absorb the huge influx of workers. Many rural migrants lack the education and skills required for white-collar or industrial jobs, leading to high rates of unemployment and underemployment in cities.

These individuals are frequently pushed into the informal sector, characterised by low wages, unstable income, and no legal protection. Common activities include street vending, waste picking, rickshaw pulling, and domestic work. While the informal sector provides a survival strategy, it traps workers in a cycle of precariousness and poverty.

  • Underemployment: workers may only find jobs for a few hours per day or weeks per year, leaving them with incomes far below the living wage.

  • Exploitation: without contracts or unions, informal workers are vulnerable to exploitation and arbitrary dismissal.

3. Social Polarisation and Spatial Segregation |

Urban areas are intense sites of wealth creation, but they also generate extreme inequality. The concentration of capital attracts high-income professionals, while the influx of low-skilled labour creates a pool of the urban poor. This binary leads to social polarisation—the widening gap between the rich and the poor within the same city.

Spatially, this polarisation is reflected in residential segregation. Gated communities, luxury high-rise apartments, and commercial districts are often adjacent to, yet completely separated from, sprawling slums. This physical proximity without interaction undermines social cohesion and reinforces mutual suspicion and conflict.

The table below summarises the characteristics of the urban rich and poor:

4. Inadequate Infrastructure and Environmental Health Hazards |

Rapid urban growth overwhelms the existing infrastructure, particularly in water supply, sewage treatment, and solid waste management. Many informal settlements lack piped water and rely on contaminated sources, leading to outbreaks of waterborne diseases such as cholera and typhoid.

Air pollution is another severe issue. Vehicle emissions, industrial smog, and burning of waste cause respiratory illnesses, particularly among children and the elderly. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), millions of premature deaths occur annually in urban areas due to outdoor air pollution, with the highest toll in rapidly urbanising Asian and African cities.

  • Water scarcity: extreme population growth increases per capita water demand, while leaks and illegal connections waste resources.

  • Waste hazard: uncollected garbage clogs drains, causes flooding, and creates breeding grounds for insects and rats.

5. Strain on Public Services: Health and Education |

Urbanisation places an enormous burden on public services such as hospitals and schools, which cannot expand quickly enough to match population growth. In many low-income urban areas, hospitals are understaffed and lack essential medicines, while patients face long waiting times and high out-of-pocket costs.

Education systems also suffer. Classrooms are overcrowded, with teacher-to-student ratios well above recommended levels. Poor families often cannot afford school fees, uniforms, or materials, and may send their children to work instead of school. This perpetuates the intergenerational transmission of poverty and limits the city’s future human capital.

  • Health inequality: urban health outcomes are strongly correlated with income, so the poorest residents bear the highest disease burden with the least access to care.

  • School dropout: high dropout rates among low-income youth reduce social mobility and increase the risk of criminality.

6. Transport Congestion and Its Economic Costs |

The rapid increase in urban population, combined with rising car ownership and inadequate road networks, results in severe traffic congestion. In megacities such as Jakarta, Bangkok, and Lagos, commuters can spend three to four hours per day stuck in traffic. This has multiple negative economic consequences.

Congestion reduces labour productivity because workers arrive late, exhausted, and with less time for work or family. It also increases fuel consumption and vehicle operating costs, raises the price of goods due to delayed deliveries, and causes environmental damage through increased emissions. In 2019, the city of Jakarta was estimated to lose billions of US dollars annually due to congestion-related losses.

7. Urban Poverty and Food Insecurity |

Contrary to the perception that poverty is exclusively rural, urban poverty is widespread and rising. Urban poor households spend a disproportionately high share of their income on food, yet they are often food-insecure. Unlike rural farmers, urban dwellers do not grow their own food; they rely entirely on purchased food, making them highly vulnerable to price shocks and fluctuations in the market.

Food deserts—areas where fresh, nutritious food is scarce or expensive—are common in low-income urban neighbourhoods. Instead, residents may have access only to cheap, highly processed, energy-dense foods, leading to rising rates of obesity, diabetes, and other diet-related diseases. This ‘double burden’ of malnutrition—where stunting coexists with obesity—is a growing challenge in developing cities.

8. Rising Crime and Social Disintegration |

High levels of inequality, unemployment, and youth idleness create a fertile ground for crime. In many cities, particularly in Latin America, Africa, and parts of Asia, violent crime, gang activity, drug trafficking, and theft are major concerns. These crimes are concentrated in low-income, neglected neighbourhoods where police presence is weak and trust in authorities is low.

Crime generates a negative feedback loop for social and economic development. Fear of violence deters investment, hampers tourism, destroys social cohesion, and worsens mental health. It also increases the cost of security for individuals and businesses, diverting resources from productive purposes.

  • Community breakdown: mistrust between neighbours reduces collective self-help, making it harder to organise local services or responses.

  • Youth vulnerability: lack of opportunities makes young people more susceptible to gang recruitment and petty crime.

9. Environmental Degradation and Resource Depletion |

Urbanisation intensifies demands on the surrounding environment, leading to resource depletion and ecosystem degradation. Cities consume vast quantities of water, energy, and land, and produce enormous amounts of waste. When demand exceeds sustainable supply, the ecological footprint of urban areas extends far beyond their administrative boundaries.

Specific problems include groundwater depletion due to over-extraction for city water supplies, airshed pollution affecting regional health, and the loss of agricultural land on the urban fringe as areas are built over. These environmental costs disproportionately affect the poor, both within cities and in surrounding rural areas.

10. Conclusion: Managing the Urban Dilemma |

The social and economic problems caused by urbanisation are severe, but they are not inevitable. Successful urban management requires comprehensive planning, investment in infrastructure and affordable housing, strengthening of the formal labour market, and provision of universal access to health, education, and safety nets. It also demands inclusive governance that gives all residents—especially the poor—a voice in decisions that affect their lives.

Case studies from cities such as Curitiba in Brazil (Bus Rapid Transit and green spaces) and Medellín in Colombia (cable cars connecting hillside slums) show that targeted interventions can transform urban life and reduce inequality. The challenge for A-Level geographers—and future planners—is to understand these problems and devise solutions that make cities not just engines of growth, but also equitable, healthy, and sustainable places to live.
