📚 2026 Exams and Assessment: What Candidates Must Know Before and After | 2026年考试与评估安排:考生考前考后须知
The 2026 examination year follows the same broad architecture as recent sessions, but the detail matters: entry deadlines, access arrangements, contingency days, results dates and post-results services all sit on a fixed calendar. Candidates who understand that calendar in advance avoid almost every avoidable problem, from a missed late-entry window to a phone found in a blazer pocket.
1. The 2026 Exam Year at a Glance | 2026
The summer 2026 series is delivered by the established awarding bodies: AQA, Pearson Edexcel, OCR, WJEC/Eduqas and CCEA within the UK, plus Cambridge International and Pearson Edexcel International for centres outside the UK. Cambridge International also runs a separate February/March series in India and a May/June series worldwide.
For UK centres, the conduct of exams – what you may bring, how late you may arrive, what counts as malpractice – is governed by the Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) regulations, not by the individual board. Your board sets the papers and the grade boundaries; JCQ sets the rules of the room.
International candidates should note a key difference: Cambridge International and Edexcel International publish their own timetables, their own key dates and their own post-results procedures, which do not always match the UK JCQ calendar.
2. Key Dates: From Entry to Results |
The dates below are the patterns used in recent summer series and are the ones to plan around. Always confirm the exact 2026 date with your exams officer, because a board can adjust a deadline and your centre may set an earlier internal cut-off.
|---|---|
| Normal entry deadline | 常规报名截止 | Mid to late February 2026 | 2026年2月中下旬 |
| Written exams end | 笔试结束 | Mid to late June 2026 | 2026年6月中下旬 |
| Contingency day | 备用考试日 | A designated day at the end of the series | 考试季后段的指定日期 |
| A Level / Level 3 results | A Level 及第三级成绩 | Mid-August 2026 (recently the second Thursday) | 2026年8月中旬(近年为第二个周四) |
| GCSE / Level 2 results | GCSE 及第二级成绩 | The following Thursday | 次周周四 |
Two consequences follow from this table. First, everything that requires paperwork – entries, access arrangements, coursework submission – happens before the first paper is sat, often by months. Second, the whole summer is committed: you cannot book a holiday for mid-June until the contingency day is officially released.
3. Entries, Late Entries and Tier Changes |
Your centre submits entries to the board. Once the normal deadline passes, entries become late entries and attract a substantially higher fee, which many centres pass on to the candidate or the family. After the late deadline closes, entry is generally only possible as a very late entry with a further fee and no guarantee of a seat or a paper.
- Check your statement of entry line by line: subject, unit or component code, tier, and your personal details.
- Report errors immediately; some can be corrected without charge before the deadline. |
- A tier change (foundation to higher, or the reverse) is not automatic and has its own deadline. |
- Withdrawing from a subject after the deadline may still incur the entry fee. |
If you are sitting as a private candidate, the centre’s internal deadlines are usually weeks earlier than the board’s, because the centre needs time to process your entry and arrange your seat.
4. Access Arrangements and Special Consideration |
Access arrangements are adjustments made before the exam to remove a disadvantage caused by a disability or difficulty. The most common is 25 per cent extra time, but also included are a reader, a scribe, a word processor, rest breaks, separate accommodation and modified papers such as enlarged print or Braille.
These arrangements are not granted on the day. They require evidence, usually a standardised assessment by a qualified assessor, and an online application submitted to the board well before the series – commonly by mid-February, and earlier for modified papers, which need to be produced to order.
Special consideration is different: it is a post-exam adjustment applied when a candidate has been fully prepared and has sat the assessment but was affected by something beyond their control – illness, bereavement, a traumatic incident, or a disruption in the exam room. It can add a small percentage of marks, capped at a modest level, and it never changes a grade on its own unless the candidate is close to a boundary.
Maximum special consideration allowance ≈ 5% of the total mark for the component |
If you missed a component entirely for an acceptable reason, a grade may sometimes be awarded on your remaining evidence, provided you completed at least a quarter of the total assessment. Medical evidence is required in every case, and it must reach the centre quickly.
5. Timetable Clashes, Contingency Days and Resits |
A timetable clash occurs when two exams you are entered for are scheduled at the same time, or when the total duration of your morning and afternoon papers exceeds the permitted daily limits. Your exams officer will manage this, usually by holding you in supervised isolation before or after one of the papers.
You must not discuss the content of the first paper with anyone during that isolation period. Doing so is malpractice, and it can jeopardise the results of every candidate involved.
The contingency day exists so that, if a national or local incident prevents a paper being sat on its scheduled date, the whole series can be shifted rather than cancelled. It is a day you must remain available, and it is not a study day to be booked over.
Resits are generally available in the following series: for linear A Levels, typically the following summer; for Cambridge International, in the next available series, with some components available in the October/November session. If you are resitting, note that your entry must be made again in full – results do not carry forward automatically.
6. What to Bring to the Exam Room |
Rules on equipment are strict because breaches can be treated as malpractice. The safest approach is to carry only what the paper requires, in a clear container, and to leave everything else at home.
- Bring: black ink pens, pencils, a ruler, an eraser, a sharpener, and a calculator if the paper permits one. |
- Do not bring: phones, smart watches, earphones, any wearable device, notes, or paper of any kind. |
- A phone in your possession, even switched off and even inside a bag, is a breach of the rules. |
- Clear pencil cases and water bottles with the label removed are usually required. |
- Calculators must be of an approved model and their cases must be removed. |
If you realise mid-exam that you have something banned on you, raise your hand immediately and hand it to an invigilator. Being proactive is treated very differently from being found out.
7. Exam Day Rules and Conduct |
UK sessions normally start at 09:00 in the morning and 13:30 in the afternoon, or at the times your centre publishes. Arrive at least twenty minutes early, with your candidate number or statement of entry.
Late arrival is handled by rules rather than goodwill. If you arrive after the published start but within the first hour, the centre may admit you and give you the full time. If you arrive more than an hour late, entry may be refused, and your only route afterwards is an application for special consideration supported by evidence.
Inside the room: no communication of any kind, no looking at another candidate’s work, no writing after the invigilator says stop, no leaving before permitted, and no taking any exam material out of the room. Disruption of an exam is itself a reportable offence.
Malpractice findings can result in a loss of marks for the component, disqualification from the subject, or disqualification from the entire series. You always have the right to respond to the board before a decision is made, and your centre must support you in doing so.
8. Non-Exam Assessment and Coursework |
Non-exam assessment (NEA) includes coursework, portfolios, practicals and spoken assessments. It is marked by your teachers and moderated by the board, and it carries a fixed percentage of your final grade in subjects such as the sciences, the arts, English literature and modern languages.
Internal deadlines are absolute. Most centres require final submission before the Easter break, and boards require marks and samples to be submitted by mid-May. Extensions are only granted for documented, serious reasons, and a late submission can mean a zero for that component.
Authenticity matters. Everything you submit must be your own work, and you will normally be asked to sign a declaration confirming this. Where sources, data or collaborators were involved, they must be properly acknowledged.
If the board’s moderator adjusts your centre’s marks, the change is applied to the whole cohort rather than to you alone, and your own mark is usually preserved unless the moderation shows a clear inconsistency.
9. How Your Work Is Marked and Graded |
Marks are awarded against a mark scheme that is finalised at the standardisation meeting, where examiners agree on the application of the criteria. Your script is marked anonymously, and senior examiners re-mark a sample from each examiner to keep standards consistent.
Grade boundaries are not set in advance. They are set after the papers have been marked and after senior examiners have judged the difficulty of that year’s papers compared with previous years.
Total mark = Σ (component mark × component weighting) |
Percentage = (Raw mark ÷ Maximum mark) × 100 | 百分比 =(原始分 ÷ 满分)× 100
The A* grade at A Level is not simply the top band of the total mark. It is awarded to candidates who achieve an A overall and who also meet a specified performance condition in the full A Level components, as set out in the board’s specification for that subject.
10. Results Day: What You Will Receive |
Results are released to centres in the morning and to candidates shortly afterwards. You can usually collect a printed statement from your centre, and many centres also allow collection by a nominated person with written authorisation, or release results by email or a secure portal.
