📚 Can You Work on a UK Student Visa? Hours and Types Depend on These Factors |

Almost every international student asks the same question before or during their first term in the UK: can I take a part-time job? The honest answer is yes for most students – but how many hours you may work, and what kinds of work you may do, are not decided by your employer, your university careers service, or how much money you need. They are fixed by immigration rules, and they depend on a small number of very specific factors: the level of your course, the type of sponsor that issued your CAS, whether you are in term time or vacation, and exactly what the work involves.

1. The Short Answer: Yes, but It Is a Permission, Not a Right | 简短回答:可以,但这是”许可”而非”权利”

Most Student visa holders in the UK are allowed to work, but the permission is written into your immigration status. It is a condition of your leave, not a general right. If your visa says 20 hours per week, that is a legal ceiling. If your visa says no work, then even a single paid hour is a breach of conditions. The first thing you should do is find out exactly what your own status says, rather than relying on what a friend or a group chat told you.

The four factors that decide your working hours are: (a) the level of your course, (b) the status of your sponsoring institution, (c) the time of year – term time or official vacation, and (d) the nature of the work itself, including whether it is an integral part of your course. Change any one of these and your answer changes.

2. Factor 1: The Level of Your Course |

The single most important factor is whether your course is at degree level or above. In the UK framework this generally means RQF Level 6 (bachelor’s degree), Level 7 (master’s, PGCE, integrated foundation at postgraduate level) and Level 8 (doctorate). Courses below degree level – foundation years, pre-sessional English, some access and diploma courses at Levels 3 to 5 – carry a lower limit.

The practical difference is simple. A degree-level student at a qualifying institution can normally work up to 20 hours per week in term time. A student on a course below degree level at a publicly funded further education college is normally limited to 10 hours per week. That is a difference of roughly 40 hours a month – enough to matter for rent, but not enough to break the rule over.

3. Factor 2: Who Sponsors You – Institution Status Matters |

Your 20-hour entitlement does not come automatically with a degree offer. It depends on your sponsor being a higher education provider with a track record of compliance. A private college that sponsors students for a course below degree level will normally have no work permission attached at all. This is why two students on paper-similar courses can have completely different rights.

The table below summarises the standard position. Always verify against your own eVisa or decision letter, because individual cases can differ.

Course and sponsor situation Term-time limit Vacation
Degree level or above at a higher education provider with a track record of compliance 20 hours per week Full time
Below degree level at a publicly funded further education college 10 hours per week Usually full time
Course at a private provider with no work condition attached 0 hours 0 hours
Part-time course Normally no work permission Normally no work permission
Graduate route (post-study) No hour limit No hour limit

4. Factor 3: Term Time versus Official Vacation |

The 20-hour limit applies during term time only. In official vacations you may normally work full time. The trap is that “vacation” is defined by your institution’s academic calendar for your specific course, not by your feelings about how busy you are.

Reading weeks, revision weeks and assessment periods are almost always term time. If you are a master’s student writing a dissertation over the summer, that summer is usually term time for you, because your course has not yet ended. If you are a PhD student, there is rarely a long vacation at all – the whole year tends to count as term time.

Two more technical points matter. First, the week is normally counted Monday to Sunday, and you cannot average hours across weeks – working 40 hours one week and nothing the next is still a breach. Second, if you hold two jobs, the hours are added together. Twenty hours is the total, not twenty hours per employer.

5. Factor 4: What Your eVisa Actually Says | 因素四:你的 eVisa 到底怎么写

Since the UK moved to a digital immigration status, your conditions live in your online UKVI account rather than only on a physical card. Your decision letter, your CAS and your eVisa should all be consistent, but you should read them yourself. The wording is usually short and precise, for example: “20 hours per week during term time” or “no work”.

If there is any inconsistency, or if you cannot find a work condition at all, do not guess. Contact your university’s immigration compliance team – they deal with this every day and can confirm your position in writing. Keep that written confirmation. If a future application is ever questioned, a dated email from a compliance adviser explaining your understanding at the time is far better than a memory.

6. Factor 5: What Counts as “Work” | 因素五:什么算作”工作”

The hours limit applies to paid work and to unpaid work that would normally be paid. An unpaid internship at a company, where an employee would ordinarily be paid, counts toward your 20 hours. Genuine volunteering for a registered charity – work that no one would be paid for – normally does not count, and you can do it without using up your hours.
