📚 ESAT Physics: The 27-Question Coverage Map and Where Marks Are Lost | ESAT

The ESAT (Engineering and Science Admissions Test) is the admissions test used by the University of Cambridge and Imperial College London for a range of engineering, science and chemical engineering courses. The Physics module is one of five available modules and is the one many engineering applicants sit alongside Mathematics 1 and Mathematics 2. It contains 27 multiple-choice questions to be answered in 40 minutes, with no calculator and no formula sheet, and each module is reported as a scaled score rather than a percentage.

ESAT(Engineering and Science Admissions Test,工程与科学入学考试)是剑桥大学与帝国理工学院用于工程、科学及化学工程等专业录取的入学笔试。

Because every question carries the same single mark, the module rewards speed and accuracy in equal measure. The highest scorers are rarely the candidates who know the most exotic physics; they are the candidates who drop the fewest routine marks. This article maps the 27 questions topic by topic, then examines in detail the places where otherwise strong candidates most often lose marks.

1. What the ESAT Physics Module Actually Tests | ESAT

The Physics module is a computer-delivered, multiple-choice paper. You sit it at a Pearson VUE test centre, you cannot return to a question once you have moved on within the review rules of the interface, and there is no negative marking for a wrong answer. That last point matters enormously: an unanswered question is always worth less than a guessed one.

The content level is deliberately capped. The published specification is based on GCSE or National 5 material extended by roughly the first year of A Level (or equivalent). Because ESAT is sat in the autumn of Year 13, candidates are not expected to have covered the full two-year A Level syllabus. This is good news for well-prepared Year 12 students and bad news for anyone who assumes that “harder physics” equals “better preparation”.

There is no official pass mark. Scores are reported per module on a scaled scale, and competitive applicants in engineering typically need strong scores across all the modules they sit. No calculator means the numbers are chosen to be manageable: expect ratios, powers of ten, simple fractions and answers expressed in terms of g rather than long decimals.

2. The 27-Question Blueprint: An Approximate Topic Map | 27

Unlike a school exam, ESAT does not weight topics equally. Mechanics dominates, electricity is a solid second, and the remaining questions are spread across materials, waves, fields, thermal physics and atomic physics. The table below is an approximate map inferred from the published specification and the specimen materials; treat the ranges as planning guidance, not as a guarantee.

Electricity and circuits | 电学与电路 4-5 Series and parallel, power, EMF, dividers | 串并联、功率、电动势、分压
Thermal physics and gases | 热学与气体 2-3 Specific and latent heat, pV = nRT | 比热与潜热、理想气体方程

Two practical conclusions follow. First, roughly one third of the paper is mechanics, so a shaky mechanics foundation caps your ceiling no matter how good your electricity is. Second, the “small” topics are individually worth only two or three marks, which means they are cheap to secure with focused revision and expensive to neglect.

3. Mechanics I: Kinematics, Dynamics and Momentum |

This is the heart of the paper. Expect questions on velocity-time and displacement-time graphs, the SUVAT equations applied to motion with uniform acceleration, Newton’s second law in one and two dimensions, and conservation of momentum in collisions and explosions.

v = u + at    s = ut + ½at²    v² = u² + 2as    s = ½(u + v)t

F = ma    p = mv    FΔt = Δp    Σp_before = Σp_after

The graph questions are where most marks quietly disappear. On a velocity-time graph the gradient is acceleration and the area under the line is displacement; on a displacement-time graph the gradient is velocity and the area means nothing at all. Candidates who mix these up produce an answer that is arithmetically flawless and physically wrong.

Momentum questions punish sign errors. Choose a positive direction, state it, and apply it to every velocity in the collision. A ball that rebounds has changed velocity direction, so its change in momentum is larger than a simple subtraction suggests, and the impulse FΔt must carry that sign. Elastic and inelastic collisions must also be distinguished: kinetic energy is conserved only in an elastic collision, while momentum is conserved in both.

A final trap: in projectile questions the horizontal and vertical motions must be treated independently. The horizontal velocity stays constant; the vertical motion obeys SUVAT with a = g. Trying to apply one set of equations to the resultant path is a guaranteed mark loss.

4. Mechanics II: Forces, Moments and Equilibrium |

Equilibrium questions look simple and are not. Two conditions must hold simultaneously: the resultant force is zero and the resultant moment about any point is zero.

ΣF = 0    and    ΣM = 0    where   M = F × d_perpendicular

The single most common error is using the distance along the beam instead of the perpendicular distance from the pivot to the line of action of the force. The second most common error is forgetting the weight of the beam itself, which acts at its centre of mass. On a non-uniform beam you must be told where the centre of mass is; on a uniform beam it is at the midpoint.

On an inclined plane, resolve parallel and perpendicular to the surface rather than horizontally and vertically. The component of weight along the slope is mg sin θ, and the normal reaction is mg cos θ. Getting these two the wrong way round is an extremely frequent error, and it is best prevented by checking the limiting cases θ = 0 and θ = 90°.

Friction deserves one line of memory: static friction adjusts to whatever is needed up to its limit μN, whereas kinetic friction is fixed at μN. A block that is not moving can therefore be in equilibrium with a friction force far smaller than μN.

5. Materials, Springs, Density and Pressure |

This is a compact but highly formula-driven block. Springs obey Hooke’s law up to the limit of proportionality, and the energy stored is the area under a force-extension graph.
