📚 How to Use the QS Official Scholarship Search Tool | QS

Every year thousands of strong A-Level candidates lose funding they were perfectly eligible for, simply because they never looked in the right place. The QS scholarship search tool exists to fix that problem: it is a free, filterable database that gathers awards from universities, governments, foundations and private donors across dozens of study destinations. This guide walks you through the whole workflow, from your first search to a verified shortlist, and shows you how to convert a list of results into applications that actually win money.

1. What the QS Scholarship Search Tool Actually Is | QS

The tool is a searchable index, not a funding body. QS does not award the money and does not decide who receives it. It collects scholarship records published by providers, standardises the key fields, and lets you filter them. The provider – a university, ministry, foundation or company – remains the only body that can award, reject or renew the funding.

Because it is an aggregator, its greatest strength and its greatest weakness are the same thing: breadth. You can see awards in Japan, Germany, Canada, Singapore and the Netherlands on a single screen, but individual records can lag behind the provider’s own website by weeks or even a full admissions cycle.

Practically, this means one rule governs everything that follows: use QS to discover, use the provider’s official page to decide.

2. Why A-Level Students Should Start in Year 12, Not Year 13 | 为什么要在 Year 12 而不是 Year 13 开始

Scholarship timelines run ahead of university application timelines, not alongside them. Many major awards close between November and February for entry the following September, and some nomination-based schemes close even earlier, in September or October of Year 13.

Several awards require a school nomination, which means a head teacher, head of year or subject teacher must write and submit a supporting statement. Good referees are busy. If you ask in November for a January deadline, you are competing for their attention against everyone else who did the same thing.

Building your shortlist in Year 12 also changes your university choices. If you know that a specific award covers tuition but not living costs in one country, and a different one covers both in another, your final five UCAS or international choices should reflect that arithmetic, not just the league table position.

3. Step 1: Access the Tool and Build a Profile |

Open the scholarship search page on the QS / TopUniversities site. Basic searching is free and requires no payment at any stage. Creating a free account is optional, but it lets you save searches, bookmark awards and receive alerts when new records match your criteria.

Your profile should be specific enough to be useful. Vague profiles produce unusable results.

  • Nationality and country of residence – these are hard eligibility filters for many awards.
  • Current or intended study level – undergraduate, master’s, PhD or postdoctoral.
  • Intended subject or faculty – for example engineering, medicine, economics, law, or a broad area such as STEM.
  • Preferred destination country and start year – the intake year matters because deadlines differ between September and January entry.
  • Funding type needed – full funding, partial funding, tuition waiver only, or travel grant.

Fill it in honestly. A profile that claims you are open to any subject in any country will return hundreds of irrelevant records and hide the handful that genuinely fit you.

4. Step 2: Master the Filters |

The filter panel is where the tool earns its value. Learn these six controls and you can cut a thousand results down to twenty in under two minutes.

Bachelor, Master, PhD, Postdoc A-Level students should select Bachelor only; mixing levels wastes time.
Destination 目的地 Country or region Run two searches: one targeted, one open to any country.
Subject 专业 Faculty or broad discipline Search once by your exact subject and once by the parent faculty.
Nationality 国籍 Citizenship of applicant This is the single most powerful filter.
Full, partial, tuition waiver, stipend Do not filter by “full” too early – partial awards stack.
University, government, foundation, company Government schemes often have the longest lead times.

A useful habit is to keep two saved searches running at all times: a “dream search” (your top destination plus your subject) and a “safety search” (your nationality plus any destination plus full funding). The safety search frequently surfaces awards you would never have thought to look for.

5. Step 3: Decode a Scholarship Record |

Every result looks similar at first glance, but the detail fields are where eligibility is won or lost. Read them in this order.

Field 字段 What it tells you 它告诉你什么 Check before shortlisting 入选前必须确认
Official title used by the provider Copy the exact name for your emails and forms.
Who may apply Some “undergraduate” awards exclude foundation years.
Citizenship restrictions Residency and citizenship are not the same thing.
Award value 金额 Cash amount, percentage or tuition waiver Check the currency and whether it is per year or one-off.
Number of awards 名额 How many recipients per cycle Two awards worldwide means a very different strategy.
Application closing date Confirm the time zone – many are 23:59 local to the provider.
Separate form, automatic consideration, or nomination Nomination schemes need school action weeks earlier.
Whether funding continues after year one A GPA or grade threshold can end funding in year two.

Two phrases deserve special attention. “Automatic consideration” means your admission application doubles as a scholarship application – you may not need to do anything extra, but you must check the box if one exists. “Nomination required” means you cannot apply alone; the school must put you forward.

6. Step 4: Shortlist, Track and Prioritise |

A scholarship you never apply for has a value of zero. The purpose of a shortlist is to concentrate your limited hours on awards where your probability of success multiplied by the award value is highest.

A simple priority score makes the decision rational rather than emotional:

Priority = (Award Value ÷ Application Effort) × Eligibility Confidence

Where Eligibility Confidence is scored 1.0 for a certain match, 0.5 for a likely match and 0.2 for an uncertain one, and Award Value is the expected net benefit over the full degree, not the headline figure for one year.

Keep the tracker in a spreadsheet with these columns: award name, provider, destination, value, deadline, time zone, application route, documents needed, status, and next action. Review it once a week, every week, from the start of Year 13.

Cap yourself at four to eight scholarship applications in a cycle. Beyond that, quality collapses and your academic work suffers, which in turn damages the grades that made you eligible in the first place.

7. Step 5: Verify on the Provider’s Official Site |

Never submit an application based only on a database record. Always click through to the provider’s own page and verify five things: the current cycle’s deadline, the eligible nationalities, the required documents, whether a separate admission application is needed, and whether a nomination or reference is required.

A quick way to detect an outdated page is to look for the academic year printed in the heading or URL. If it says 2023/24 and you are applying for 2026 entry, treat the whole record as provisional until confirmed.

If something is genuinely ambiguous, send a short, polite email to the funding office or admissions office. Two or three sentences, one clear question.

State your nationality, the award name, the intake year, and ask the specific question. Vague enquiries get vague answers, or no answer at all.

8. Eligibility Triage: Hard Filters vs Soft Preferences |

Scholarship requirements fall into two categories, and confusing them is the most common cause of wasted effort.

Hard filters are objective and binary. Citizenship, country of residence, age limits, study level, subject restrictions, first-degree status, household income thresholds, and the deadline itself. If you fail a single hard filter, you are ineligible, and no amount of brilliant essay writing will change that.

Soft preferences are subjective and weighted. Leadership experience, community service, sporting or musical achievement, a stated career goal, and the quality of your personal statement. These decide who wins among the eligible, not who is allowed to enter.

The discipline is simple: check hard filters first and ruthlessly. If an award requires citizenship you do not hold, delete it from your shortlist in ten seconds rather than spending an hour reading about it.

Then, and only then, compare yourself against the soft preferences and decide how competitively you can present your evidence.

9. Funding Arithmetic: What the Award Really Covers |

A headline figure of “£20,000” can mean very different things. Before you rank awards, build the full cost picture for each destination.

Total Cost = Tuition + Accommodation + Living Costs + Insurance + Travel + Visa + Books

Net Cost = Total Cost − (Award Value − Conditions Attached)

Then check what the award actually pays for, using this comparison.

Costs you must plan for 你须自备的费用
Tuition fees only Living, accommodation, visa, flights
A fixed sum or percentage The remaining balance each year
Tuition plus a stipend Annual excess over the stipend; one-off setup costs
Stipend or maintenance grant Living costs, paid in instalments Gap between instalments; currency fluctuation
Flights or conference costs Everything else

Four details cause most surprises: whether the award renews after year one, whether a grade threshold applies, whether the stipend is taxable in
