IELTS Academic vs General Training: Study or Migration Decides Your Choice | 雅思学术类与培训类的区别:留学还是移民决定选哪一类

📚 IELTS Academic vs General Training: Study or Migration Decides Your Choice | 雅思学术类与培训类的区别:留学还是移民决定选哪一类

Every year thousands of candidates book the wrong IELTS test. They prepare for months, sit the exam, receive a perfectly respectable band score, and then discover that the university or the immigration authority will not accept it. The two versions of IELTS – Academic and General Training – share the same Listening and Speaking papers, the same nine-band scale and the same two-year validity, yet they exist for completely different purposes. Choosing correctly is not a matter of difficulty; it is a matter of destination.

每年都有成千上万的考生报错了雅思类型。他们备考数月、参加考试、拿到还算体面的分数,然后才发现大学或移民局根本不接受这份成绩。雅思的学术类(Academic)与培训类(General Training)共用同一套听力与口语试卷、同一个九分制、同样是两年有效期,但它们的存在目的完全不同。选对类型不是难度问题,而是目的地问题。

1. What the Two IELTS Versions Actually Are | 两类雅思考试究竟是什么

IELTS Academic is designed for people who intend to study at undergraduate or postgraduate level in an English-speaking institution. Its Reading and Writing papers use academic source material: journal articles, textbook extracts, research reports, charts, processes and diagrams. The vocabulary and the reasoning style assume that you will soon be writing essays, lab reports and literature reviews in English.

雅思学术类面向的是准备进入英语授课院校攻读本科或研究生的人。它的阅读与写作使用学术来源材料:期刊论文、教材节选、研究报告、图表、流程与示意图。词汇与论证方式都预设你很快要用英文写论文、实验报告和文献综述。

IELTS General Training is designed for people who intend to migrate, work, or train and study below degree level in an English-speaking country. Its Reading and Writing papers use everyday and workplace material: notices, advertisements, company handbooks, accommodation contracts, letters of complaint, job applications and staff memos. The assumption here is that you need English to function in a new society and to deal with institutions, employers and landlords.

雅思培训类面向的是准备移民、工作,或在英语国家接受非学位层次培训与学习的人。它的阅读与写作使用日常与职场材料:通知、广告、公司手册、住宿合同、投诉信、求职信与员工备忘录。其预设是你需要用英语在新社会里生活,与机构、雇主、房东打交道。

Both versions contain four papers – Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking – and both report a whole-band or half-band score from 1 to 9 for each skill plus an overall band. Neither version is easier in any absolute sense; they simply demand different skills.

两类考试都包含四个部分——听力、阅读、写作、口语,且都按 1 至 9 分(可含半分)报告单项成绩与总分。从绝对意义上说,两类没有谁更简单,它们只是要求不同的能力。

2. The One-Question Rule: Study or Migrate | 一个问题定方向:留学还是移民

Before you book anything, answer one question honestly: what will you do with this score? If the answer is “apply to a university, college or pathway programme”, you almost certainly need Academic. If the answer is “apply for a visa to live, work or settle”, you almost certainly need General Training. Almost every mistake in test selection comes from ignoring this single sentence.

报名之前,请诚实回答一个问题:这个分数你打算用来做什么?如果答案是”申请大学、学院或衔接课程”,你几乎肯定需要学术类;如果答案是”申请居住、工作或定居类签证”,你几乎肯定需要培训类。几乎所有选错类型的案例,都源于忽略了这一句话。

There is one important exception worth remembering for the United Kingdom: IELTS for UKVI General Training is accepted for study below degree level, for example some foundation, pre-sessional or college courses delivered by a licensed sponsor. So “study” does not automatically mean Academic – it means Academic unless the institution explicitly states otherwise.

英国有一个重要例外值得记住:IELTS for UKVI 培训类可用于非学位层次的学习,例如由持牌担保方开设的部分预科、语言班或学院课程。所以”留学”并不自动等于学术类——除非院校明确说明,否则默认学术类,但存在例外。

Purpose Usual test
University degree admission IELTS Academic / IELTS for UKVI Academic
Foundation or pre-sessional (UK) Usually Academic; check whether UKVI version is required
Skilled migration, work visas IELTS General Training (or IELTS for UKVI General Training)
Family, partner, settlement (UK) IELTS for UKVI General Training or IELTS Life Skills
Professional registration (nursing, engineering) Often Academic; check the regulator’s list

3. Reading: Long Academic Passages vs Everyday Texts | 阅读:学术长文与日常文本

Academic Reading gives you three long passages of roughly 700 to 900 words each, drawn from books, journals, magazines and newspapers. The topics are scientific, historical, sociological or environmental, and the questions test detailed comprehension, inference, matching headings, identifying the writer’s claims and following a complex argument. Forty questions in sixty minutes, with no extra transfer time.

学术类阅读提供三篇约 700 至 900 词的长文,选自书籍、期刊、杂志与报纸。话题涉及科学、历史、社会学或环境,题目考查细节理解、推断、标题匹配、辨别作者主张以及跟随复杂论证。六十分钟四十题,没有额外的誊写时间。

General Training Reading also has forty questions in sixty minutes, but it is organised into three sections of increasing difficulty. Section 1 contains short everyday texts such as advertisements and notices; Section 2 contains workplace texts such as staff handbooks and training documents; Section 3 contains one longer, more academic-style passage. The early sections feel easier, but the marking is harsher.

培训类阅读同样是六十分钟四十题,但分为难度递增的三个部分。第一部分是短小的日常文本,如广告与通知;第二部分是职场文本,如员工手册与培训文件;第三部分是一篇较长的、更接近学术风格的短文。前面部分看似简单,但评分更严。

This is the key practical difference. The raw score needed for the same band is significantly higher in General Training. As an approximate guide, a band 7 in Academic Reading is often around 30 to 32 correct answers, while a band 7 in General Training Reading is often around 34 to 35. Always treat such tables as indicative, because official conversions vary slightly from test to test.

这是最关键的实际差异。培训类拿到同一分数所需的原始正确题数明显更高。作为大致参考:学术类阅读 7 分通常约需答对 30 至 32 题,而培训类阅读 7 分通常约需答对 34 至 35 题。请务必把此类换算表视为参考值,官方换算在不同场次会有轻微浮动。

Academic Reading 7.0 ≈ 30-32 / 40 | General Training Reading 7.0 ≈ 34-35 / 40

4. Writing Task 1: Chart Description vs Letter Writing | 写作任务一:图表描述与书信写作

Academic Writing Task 1 asks you to describe visual information in at least 150 words in about 20 minutes. The input may be a line graph, bar chart, pie chart, table, process diagram, map or a combination of these. You must select and report the main features, make comparisons where relevant, and write in a neutral, impersonal academic register. You must not give opinions or explanations of causes.

学术类写作任务一要求你在约 20 分钟内用至少 150 词描述视觉信息。输入材料可能是折线图、柱状图、饼图、表格、流程图、地图或它们的组合。你必须选取并报告主要特征,在相关处进行比较,并使用中性、非个人的学术语体。不得给出观点或解释原因。

General Training Writing Task 1 asks you to write a letter of at least 150 words in about 20 minutes. The prompt tells you the situation, the recipient and three bullet points to cover. The letter may be formal (to a manager or a council), semi-formal (to a landlord or a colleague) or informal (to a friend). Tone, register and purpose are all assessed, and getting the tone wrong costs you marks even if your grammar is flawless.

培训类写作任务一要求你在约 20 分钟内写一封至少 150 词的信件。题目给出情境、收信人和三个必须覆盖的要点。信件可能是正式(写给经理或市政部门)、半正式(写给房东或同事)或非正式(写给朋友)。语气、语体与写信目的是评分内容,语气用错即使语法完美也会丢分。

A frequent trap in General Training is the informal letter. Candidates who have trained for years on academic essays often produce stiff, overly formal letters to friends, or write “Dear Sir or Madam” to a close friend. Equally, candidates writing to a council sometimes use contractions and exclamation marks. In Academic Task 1, the equivalent trap is describing everything in the chart instead of selecting the most significant trends.

培训类最常见的陷阱是非正式信件。长期练学术议论文的考生写给朋友时往往生硬、过度正式,或者对好友写”Dear Sir or Madam”。反过来,写给市政部门的信里又出现缩写和感叹号。学术类任务一的对应陷阱则是把图表里所有数据都描述一遍,而不是挑选最显著的趋势。

5. Writing Task 2: The Shared Essay, Different Topics | 写作任务二:共通的议论文,话题侧重不同

Writing Task 2 is the same task type in both versions: a discursive essay of at least 250 words in about 40 minutes, arguing a position, discussing two views, or solving a problem. It is worth twice as much as Task 1, and it is assessed on four criteria: Task Response, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy.

写作任务二在两类中题型相同:约 40 分钟内写一篇至少 250 词的议论文,立场论证、讨论双方观点或解决问题。它的分值约为任务一的两倍,并按四项标准评分:任务回应、连贯与衔接、词汇资源、语法多样性与准确性。

The difference lies in topic selection rather than in marking criteria. General Training Task 2 questions tend to deal with everyday social issues – parenting, television, public transport, neighbours, work-life balance, community facilities. Academic Task 2 questions are more likely to touch on education policy, technology, environment, research funding, globalisation or abstract social trends.

差异在于话题选择,而非评分标准。培训类任务二往往涉及日常社会话题——育儿、电视、公共交通、邻里关系、工作与生活平衡、社区设施。学术类任务二则更可能涉及教育政策、科技、环境、科研经费、全球化或较抽象的社会趋势。

In practice, however, the overlap is large. A well-prepared candidate can write a strong Task 2 essay for either version, because the underlying skills – clear position, logical paragraphs, precise vocabulary, varied complex sentences – are identical. If you are unsure which version you need, Task 2 preparation is never wasted.

但实际上两者重合度很高。准备充分的考生可以用同一套能力写好任何一类的任务二,因为底层技能完全一致:清晰立场、逻辑分段、精准词汇、多变的复杂句。如果你还不确定该考哪一类,任务二的备考永远不会白费。

6. Listening and Speaking: Identical in Both Versions | 听力与口语:两类完全一致

The Listening paper is exactly the same for Academic and General Training candidates. Four recorded sections, forty questions, approximately thirty minutes of audio plus ten minutes to transfer answers in the paper-based test. Section 1 is a transactional conversation, Section 2 a monologue on a general topic, Section 3 a discussion among up to four speakers, and Section 4 an academic lecture.

听力试卷对学术类与培训类考生完全相同。四段录音、四十道题,纸笔考试约三十分钟音频加十分钟誊写答案。第一部分是日常事务对话,第二部分是通用话题独白,第三部分是最多四人参与的讨论,第四部分是学术讲座。

The Speaking test is also identical: a face-to-face interview of eleven to fourteen minutes in three parts. Part 1 is questions on familiar topics, Part 2 is a two-minute individual long turn from a cue card, and Part 3 is a deeper discussion linked to the Part 2 topic. You are assessed on fluency and coherence, lexical resource, grammatical range and accuracy, and pronunciation.

口语考试同样一致:11 至 14 分钟、分三部分的面对面面试。第一部分是熟悉话题问答,第二部分是根据提示卡做两分钟个人陈述,第三部分是与第二部分话题相关的深入讨论。评分维度为流利与连贯、词汇资源、语法多样性与准确性、发音。

Because two of the four papers are shared, roughly half of your preparation is common to both versions. That is good news for anyone who has not yet decided, and it also means that a candidate switching versions late is not starting from zero – only Reading and Writing Task 1 change.

由于四个部分中有两个完全共用,你大约一半的备考对两类都适用。这对尚未决定的人是好消息,也意味着临时改考类型的考生并非从零开始——只有阅读和写作任务一会改变。

7. Scoring and Score Requirements Compared | 评分与分数要求对比

Both versions report scores on the same nine-band scale, and both are valid for two years. Band descriptors for Writing and Speaking are the same documents. What differs is the raw-score-to-band conversion for Reading, and the difficulty calibration that makes General Training Reading and Writing harder to score highly in.

两类都采用相同的九分制,成绩有效期同为两年。写作与口语的评分描述表是同一份文件。差别在于阅读部分的原始分与等级换算,以及使培训类阅读与写作更难拿高分的难度校准。

Typical requirements look like this. A UK university master’s programme often asks for Academic 6.5 overall with no component below 6.0. A competitive programme may ask for 7.0 with 6.5 in each skill. UK Skilled Worker visas need B1 level, roughly Academic or General Training 4.0 in each of the four skills. Australian skilled migration points often start at competent English, 6.0 in each skill, with higher points for proficient (7.0) and superior (8.0). Canadian Express Entry uses General Training and converts bands to CLB levels, where CLB 9 corresponds to roughly 8.0 in Listening and 7.0 in the other three skills.

Note one asymmetry that surprises many people: Academic scores are usually accepted for migration purposes where a test is required, but General Training scores are almost never accepted for degree-level university admission. If there is any chance you will later apply to a university, Academic is the safer choice.

有一个不对称常令人意外:在需要语言成绩的移民申请中,学术类成绩通常是被接受的;但培训类成绩几乎从不被学位层次的大学录取接受。如果你未来有可能申请大学,学术类是更稳妥的选择。

8. Migration Routes: UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand | 移民路径:英国、加拿大、澳洲、新西兰

In the United Kingdom, work and family routes almost always point to General Training. Skilled Worker and most work visas require a Secure English Language Test at B1 or above, which IELTS for UKVI General Training satisfies. Family and partner visas at A1, A2 or B1 can be met with IELTS Life Skills, a much shorter speaking-and-listening-only test, or with IELTS for UKVI General Training. Settlement and citizenship generally require B1.

在英国,工作与家庭类路径几乎都指向培训类。技术工签及多数工作签证要求 B1 及以上的安全英语语言测试(SELT),IELTS for UKVI 培训类即可满足。A1、A2 或 B1 的家庭与伴侣签证可用 IELTS Life Skills(只考口语听力、时长更短)或 IELTS for UKVI 培训类满足。永居与入籍通常要求 B1。

Canada’s Express Entry system is built around IELTS General Training for the language component, alongside CELPIP-General as an alternative. Note that Canada’s Student Direct Stream was discontinued in November 2024, so students applying to Canadian institutions now typically need IELTS Academic for admission and must meet the standard study permit financial and language requirements. Always verify the current rules on the official immigration website before booking.

加拿大快速通道的语言部分以雅思培训类为核心,也可用 CELPIP-General 替代。注意加拿大的”学生直入计划”(SDS)已于 2024 年 11 月停止,因此申请加拿大院校的学生现在通常需要学术类雅思用于录取,并需满足普通学签的资金与语言要求。报名前请务必在官方移民网站核实最新规定。

Australia and New Zealand accept IELTS for skilled migration purposes, and both Academic and General Training results are recognised for many visa subclasses, though the specific subclass rules vary. Universities and student visas, by contrast, are firmly Academic territory. The lesson is consistent: migration authorities are often flexible about which version you take, while educational institutions are not.

澳大利亚和新西兰在技术移民中接受雅思成绩,许多签证类别同时认可学术类与培训类,但具体子类规定不同。相比之下,大学录取与学生签证则明确属于学术类的范围。规律是一致的:移民部门对考哪一类往往较灵活,而教育机构则不灵活。

9. Study Abroad Routes: Universities and Pathway Programmes | 留学路径:大学与衔接课程

For degree-level study in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Ireland and most other destinations, IELTS Academic is the standard requirement. Undergraduate admission commonly asks for 6.0 to 6.5 overall; postgraduate taught programmes for 6.5 to 7.0; and professional courses such as medicine, law, nursing and teaching may require 7.0 or 7.5 with strict minimums in each skill.

在英国、澳大利亚、新西兰、加拿大、爱尔兰及多数目的地攻读学位,学术类雅思是标准要求。本科录取通常要求总分 6.0 至 6.5;授课型硕士要求 6.5 至 7.0;医学、法律、护理、教育等专业课程可能要求 7.0 或 7.5,且各单项有严格下限。

Students who fall slightly short of the required score are usually offered a pathway: a pre-sessional English course, an international foundation year, or a diploma leading into the second year of a degree. These programmes may accept slightly lower bands and may use a UKVI-approved test if the student needs a visa. In the UK, sub-degree-level study can in some cases be covered by IELTS for UKVI General Training, so read the offer letter carefully.

分数略低于要求的学生通常会获得衔接方案:学前语言班、国际预科年,或可衔接学位二年级的文凭课程。这类项目可能接受略低的分数,若学生需要签证,还可能要求 UKVI 认可的考试。在英国,非学位层次的学习在某些情况下可用 IELTS for UKVI 培训类满足,请仔细阅读录取通知书。

Some institutions also accept alternative evidence such as a previous degree taught in English, an English-medium schooling certificate, or another recognised test. This does not change the general rule: if you are applying for a degree, plan for Academic.

部分院校也接受其他证明,例如以英语授课的既往学位、英语授课学校的证书或其他受认可的考试。这并不改变总体规则:申请学位,就按学术类准备。

10. Common Mistakes and Conversion Realities | 常见误区与分数换算现实

The first mistake is booking General Training because it “sounds easier”. The texts are more familiar, but the thresholds are higher, and the writing tasks are judged more strictly on register and purpose. Candidates who need a high band often find General Training Reading harder to reach 7.0 in than Academic Reading.

第一个误区是觉得培训类”听起来更简单”就报它。文本确实更贴近生活,但分数线更高,写作任务在语体和写作目的上判得更严。需要高分的考生常常发现,培训类阅读要拿到 7.0 比学术类阅读更难。

The second mistake is ignoring the UKVI distinction. IELTS, IELTS for UKVI and IELTS Life Skills are different products with different approved uses. Taking the wrong one can mean a refused visa application even with an excellent score. Check the sponsor or authority’s list, in writing, before you pay.

第二个误区是忽视 UKVI 的区别。IELTS、IELTS for UKVI 与 IELTS Life Skills 是不同产品,获批用途也不同。考错类型可能导致签证被拒,即使分数很高。付款前请以书面形式核对担保方或官方机构的要求清单。

The third mistake is relying on online score-conversion tables as if they were official. Conversion varies slightly between test versions and administrations. The official IELTS website publishes the only authoritative guidance, and individual institutions often set their own equivalences anyway.

第三个误区是把网上的分数换算表当作官方标准。换算在不同试卷版本与考次间会有轻微差异。只有雅思官网发布的说明具有权威性,而且各机构往往自行设定等效标准。

A fourth point worth knowing: IELTS One Skill Retake allows candidates who have already taken a full test to retake a single component in many locations, which can be useful if only your Writing or Reading is short. Availability and eligibility vary by country and by test type, so check locally.

第四点值得了解:雅思”单科重考”(One Skill Retake)在不少地区允许已参加完整考试的考生重考单个科目,如果你的写作或阅读差一点会很有用。其可用性与资格条件因国家和考试类型而异,请查询本地信息。

11. Six-Week Preparation Plan for Each Version | 两类考试的六周备考方案

Because Listening and Speaking are shared, both plans begin identically. Weeks 1 and 2: build listening stamina with one full section per day, plus fifteen minutes of shadowing to improve pronunciation and fluency. Simultaneously, learn the Speaking Part 2 cue-card structure and record yourself twice a week.

由于听力与口语完全共用,两套方案的开头相同。第 1、2 周:每天完成一个完整听力部分以建立耐力,加上 15 分钟影子跟读以改善发音与流利度。同时掌握口语第二部分的提示卡结构,每周录音两次。

Weeks 3 and 4 diverge. Academic candidates should drill graph and process description, learning a fixed set of comparison and trend verbs, and practise skimming three long passages in eighteen minutes each. General Training candidates should practise formal, semi-formal and informal letters, building three separate phrase banks, and train on short everyday texts where accuracy matters more than speed.

第 3、4 周开始分流。学术类考生应集中练图表与流程描述,掌握一套固定的比较与趋势动词,并练习每篇 18 分钟略读三篇长文。培训类考生应练习正式、半正式与非正式信件,建立三个独立的句式库,并针对短篇日常文本训练——这类文本中准确比速度更重要。

Weeks 5 and 6 are for full mock tests under timed conditions. Academic candidates should complete at least three full Reading and Writing sets; General Training candidates should do the same but with a stopwatch on Task 1 letters to keep them within twenty minutes. In the final week, review error logs rather than doing new material, and confirm your test format, venue and required ID.

第 5、6 周进行限时全真模考。学术类考生至少完成三套完整阅读与写作;培训类考生同样如此,但要用秒表控制任务一信件在 20 分钟内完成。最后一周应复习错题记录而非做新题,并确认考试形式、考场与所需证件。

A useful weekly rhythm: four days of skill work, one day of vocabulary consolidation, one day of timed practice, one rest day. Consistency beats intensity, especially for Listening, which improves only with regular exposure.

一个实用的每周节奏:四天技能训练、一天词汇巩固、一天限时练习、一天休息。稳定胜过强度,尤其对听力而言——它只有靠规律接触才会提高。
