IELTS General Training Reading and Writing: How Letters and Essays Differ | 雅思培训类阅读与写作的差异:书信与议论文两项任务

📚 IELTS General Training Reading and Writing: How Letters and Essays Differ | 雅思培训类阅读与写作的差异:书信与议论文两项任务

IELTS General Training candidates often treat Reading and Writing as two unrelated battles to be fought on the same morning. In fact, they test one shared skill set: the ability to work out what a text is doing and to respond to it in the register that the situation demands. This guide unpacks the differences between GT Reading and GT Writing, and, inside the Writing paper, between the letter in Task 1 and the essay in Task 2.

雅思培训类的考生常常把阅读和写作当成同一个上午要打的两场互不相干的硬仗。事实上,它们考查的是一套共同能力:判断一篇文章在做什么,并用情境所要求的语域作出回应。本文梳理培训类阅读与写作之间的差异,并进一步拆解写作卷内部——任务一的书信与任务二的议论文——有何不同。

1. The General Training Module at a Glance | 培训类考试一览

General Training is the module designed for people who want to migrate to an English-speaking country, work there, or complete secondary education. It is not a simplified version of Academic; it is a different syllabus with a different purpose.

培训类(General Training)是为计划移民英语国家、在那里工作或完成中学阶段学习的人设计的。它不是学术类的简化版,而是一套目的不同的考试大纲。

Listening and Speaking are identical in both modules. The differences sit entirely in Reading and Writing, and they are differences of text type, register and purpose rather than of difficulty alone.

两个模块的听力与口语完全相同。差异全部集中在阅读与写作,而且这些差异主要在于文本类型、语域和写作目的,并非单纯难易之分。

  • GT Reading uses everyday and workplace texts; Academic Reading uses academic journals and textbooks.
    培训类阅读使用日常生活与职场文本;学术类阅读使用学术期刊与教科书。
  • GT Writing Task 1 is a letter; Academic Writing Task 1 is a graph, chart, table, map or process description.
    培训类写作任务一写书信;学术类写作任务一描述图表、地图或流程。
  • Task 2 is an essay in both modules, but GT topics lean towards everyday social issues.
    任务二在两个模块中都是议论文,但培训类的话题更偏向日常社会问题。

2. GT Reading: Text Types, Sources and Difficulty | 培训类阅读:文本类型、来源与难度

GT Reading has three sections and 40 questions, to be answered in 60 minutes. Section 1 contains two or three short everyday texts; Section 2 contains two work-related texts; Section 3 is one longer text of general interest written in a more formal, expository style.

培训类阅读共三部分、40题,需在60分钟内完成。第一部分是两到三篇日常生活短文;第二部分是两篇与工作相关的文本;第三部分是一篇较长的、以较正式说明文体写成的大众兴趣文章。

Because Sections 1 and 2 are easier than anything in Academic Reading, the raw score needed for a given band is higher. The easiest section on the paper is also the one where careless candidates lose the most marks.

由于第一、二部分比学术类阅读的任何内容都简单,因此达到同一分数段所需的原始正确题数更高。全卷最简单的部分,往往也是粗心考生失分最多的地方。

There is normally no separate answer-transfer allowance beyond the 60 minutes, so write your answers directly onto the answer sheet as you go and always confirm the current test-day instructions.

除60分钟以外,通常不再另设誊写答案的时间,因此应边做边直接把答案写到答题卡上,并以当次考试官方指令为准。

3. GT Reading Question Types and Skills | 培训类阅读题型与技能

The GT paper recycles almost the full range of question types: multiple choice, True/False/Not Given, Yes/No/Not Given, matching information, matching headings, matching features, matching sentence endings, sentence completion, summary, note, table and flow-chart completion, diagram labelling and short-answer questions. Not every type appears in every test.

培训类试卷几乎复用了全部题型:选择题、True/False/Not Given、Yes/No/Not Given、信息匹配、标题匹配、特征匹配、句子结尾匹配、句子填空、摘要/笔记/表格/流程图填空、图表标注以及简答题。并非每种题型都会出现在每场考试中。

Four skills do most of the work. Skimming gives you the topic and structure in under a minute; scanning locates keywords or numbers; detailed reading resolves meaning at sentence level; and paraphrase recognition lets you match a question to a text that uses different words for the same idea.

真正起作用的是四项技能。略读让你在一分钟内抓住主题与结构;扫读用于定位关键词或数字;细读在句子层面解决含义;而”同义替换识别”让你把题干与用不同措辞表达同一意思的原文对应起来。

  • True/False/Not Given punishes outside knowledge: if the text does not say it, the answer is Not Given.
    True/False/Not Given 忌讳带入常识:原文没说,答案就是 Not Given。
  • Matching headings requires the main idea of a whole paragraph, not a repeated keyword.
    标题匹配考的是整段主旨,而非反复出现的关键词。
  • Completion tasks must obey the word limit and the exact spelling found in the text.
    填空题必须遵守字数限制,并沿用原文的确切拼写。

Approximate GT Reading conversions (they vary slightly by test) show how demanding accuracy is: Band 5 is around 23 correct, Band 6 around 30, Band 7 around 34 and Band 8 around 37 out of 40.

培训类阅读的大致换算(每场略有浮动)能说明准确率要求之高:40题中,5分约需答对23题,6分约30题,7分约34题,8分约37题。

4. GT Writing: Two Tasks, One Hour | 培训类写作:两项任务,一小时

GT Writing lasts 60 minutes and contains two tasks. Task 1 is a letter of at least 150 words; Task 2 is a discursive essay of at least 250 words. Task 2 carries twice the weight of Task 1, so a weak essay caps your Writing score no matter how elegant your letter is.

培训类写作时长60分钟,含两项任务。任务一是不少于150词的书信;任务二是不少于250词的议论文。任务二的权重是任务一的两倍,因此无论书信写得多漂亮,议论文偏弱都会压低写作总分。

Both tasks are marked on four equally weighted criteria: Task Achievement (Task 1) or Task Response (Task 2), Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy. The overall Writing band is calculated as (Task 1 + 2 × Task 2) ÷ 3.

两项任务都按四项等权标准评分:任务完成度(任务一)或任务回应(任务二)、连贯与衔接、词汇资源、语法多样性与准确性。写作总分算法为(任务一 + 2 × 任务二)÷ 3。

Overall Writing Band = (Task 1 Band + 2 × Task 2 Band) ÷ 3

5. Task 1 – The Letter: Purpose and Audience | 任务一:书信——目的与读者

A GT letter prompt gives you a situation and three bullet points. The bullets are not suggestions; they are the marking scheme in disguise. Every bullet must be covered, and no bullet should be left hanging without explanation or consequence.

培训类书信题目给出一个情境和三个要点。这三个要点不是建议,而是伪装起来的评分点。每个要点都必须写到,且不能只提一句而没有解释或结果。

Typical prompts include writing to a friend who is visiting, to a landlord about a repair, to a hotel manager about poor service, or to an employer requesting time off. The situation decides the register before you write a single word.

常见题目包括:写信给即将来访的朋友、就维修问题写信给房东、就糟糕的服务写信给酒店经理,或向雇主请假。在动笔之前,情境就已经决定了语域。

  • Open with a clear statement of purpose: “I am writing to complain about…”
开头明确写出目的:”I am writing to complain about…”
  • Give each bullet its own paragraph, developed with one or two supporting details.
    每个要点单独成段,并用一到两个细节展开。
  • Close with a forward-looking line: request, thanks, or suggested next step.
    结尾用一句面向未来行动的话:请求、致谢或建议下一步。
  • Keep invented detail minimal – extra facts that ignore the bullets cost you Task Achievement marks.
    杜撰细节要尽量少——与要点无关的多余内容会扣任务完成度分数。

6. The Three Registers: Formal, Semi-formal, Informal | 三种语域:正式、半正式、非正式

Register is the single most common reason GT letters lose marks. A formal letter that suddenly uses “gonna” or an informal letter that signs off “Yours faithfully” reads as uncontrolled language, and examiners notice immediately.

语域是培训类书信失分最常见的原因。正式书信突然冒出 “gonna”,或非正式书信以 “Yours faithfully” 结尾,都会被读成语言失控,考官一眼就能看出。

Feature
特征
Formal
正式
Semi-formal
半正式
Informal
非正式
Salutation
称呼
Dear Sir or Madam
尊敬的先生/女士
Dear Mr Blake
亲爱的布莱克先生
Hi Sam
嗨,山姆
Sign-off
结尾敬语
Yours faithfully

Yours sincerely
诚挚地
Best wishes / Take care
祝好/保重
Language
语言
Full forms, passive, no contractions
完整形式、被动语态、不用缩写
Polite but warmer, few contractions
礼貌但更亲切,少用缩写
Contractions, phrasal verbs, exclamation
缩写、动词短语、感叹句

If the reader is unknown to you, go formal; if you know them by name but not personally, go semi-formal; if the prompt says “a friend” or names a family member, go informal. Choosing the wrong one does not fail the letter, but it will hold Task Achievement and Lexical Resource below Band 7.

读者不认识就用正式;知道姓名但不熟就用半正式;题目写 “a friend” 或出现家人名字就用非正式。选错语域不会直接判零分,但会让任务完成度和词汇资源卡在7分以下。

7. Task 2 – The Essay: Position, Argument and Structure | 任务二:议论文——立场、论证与结构

GT Task 2 asks you to respond to a point of view on a general social issue and to support your response with reasons and examples. The main question types are opinion (agree or disagree), discussion (both views), advantages and disadvantages, problem and solution, and two-part questions.

培训类任务二要求你就某个社会性话题的观点作出回应,并用理由和例子支撑。主要题型包括观点型(同意与否)、讨论型(双方观点)、利弊型、问题解决型以及双问题型。

A reliable structure is a four-paragraph frame: an introduction that paraphrases the question and states your position; two body paragraphs, each with a topic sentence, explanation and a concrete example; and a conclusion that restates the position without introducing new material.

可靠的结构是四段式:引言改写题目并表明立场;两个主体段,每段含主题句、解释和具体例子;结论重申立场,不引入新内容。

  • Your position must be visible in the introduction and consistent to the final line.
    立场必须在引言中显现,并一直保持一致到结尾。
  • One idea per paragraph, developed fully, beats three ideas mentioned in passing.
    一段一个观点并充分展开,胜过三个一带而过的观点。
  • Examples can be personal, local or hypothetical – but they must serve the argument.
    例子可以是个人经历、身边现象或假设情形,但必须服务于论证。
  • Memorised phrases such as “In this contemporary era” are penalised because they replace real content.
    “In this contemporary era” 之类的背诵套话会被扣分,因为它们替代了真正的内容。

Task Response also requires balance. In a discussion essay, both views need genuine development before you give your own opinion; an essay that ignores one side cannot reach Band 7 for Task Response.

任务回应还要求平衡。在讨论型文章中,双方观点都要得到真正展开,之后才能给出自己的看法;忽略其中一方的文章,任务回应不可能达到7分。

8. Reading and Writing: Skills That Transfer | 阅读与写作:可迁移的能力

The two papers are not separate subjects. GT Reading is, in effect, an input model for GT Writing: it exposes you to the exact registers, cohesive devices and formulaic expressions that Task 1 and Task 2 require.

这两份试卷并非彼此割裂的科目。培训类阅读实际上是写作的输入范本:它让你接触到任务一和任务二恰好需要的语域、衔接手段和固定表达。

Recognising paraphrase in Reading trains you to produce it in Writing. Noticing how a handbook uses “must”, “should” and “may” prepares you for the obligations and requests in a formal letter. Tracking how an article links its paragraphs shows you how an essay should flow.

在阅读中识别同义替换,训练的是写作中的改写能力;留意员工手册如何区分 “must””should””may”,为正式书信中的义务与请求表达做好准备;追踪文章段落之间的衔接方式,就是论文行文流动的模板。
