📚 QS Stars: Why Only Subscribed and Consenting Institutions Are Displayed | QS Stars

QS Stars is a voluntary rating and audit service operated by QS Quacquarelli Symonds, the same company behind the QS World University Rankings. Unlike a ranking, it does not place universities in a numbered order; it awards stars against a set of threshold-based criteria. The single most misunderstood feature of the system is its publication rule: a rating is normally only made visible on QS platforms when the institution has engaged with the service and has agreed in writing to publication. In other words, the public list of QS Stars institutions is not a complete census of higher education quality, it is a list of institutions that chose to be on it.

1. What QS Stars Actually Is | QS Stars

QS Stars is best understood as a benchmarking and audit product rather than a league table. An institution opts in, submits evidence, is assessed by QS analysts against published criteria, and receives a star award in several categories plus an overall star rating. The scale runs from one star to five stars, with a small number of institutions holding an overall rating above five stars to signal performance well beyond the standard benchmarks. Because the assessment is criterion-referenced, two universities on opposite sides of the world can both hold five stars without either being ranked above the other.

2. Rating Is Not Ranking |

The distinction matters because students often read a star rating as if it were a position. A ranking answers the question “how does this institution compare with others in a single ordered list?” A rating answers a different question: “does this institution meet, exceed, or fall short of a defined benchmark in each area?” Ratings are therefore additive and permissive. They reward breadth as well as excellence, and they allow an institution to be strong in some categories and weaker in others while still holding a respectable overall award.

3. The Publication Condition |

The publication rule can be written as a simple relationship. A QS Stars profile becomes publicly visible only when both conditions are satisfied.

Public profile = Subscription (paid engagement) × Consent (written publication approval)

Subscription refers to the commercial relationship: the institution engages with QS for the assessment service. Consent refers to permission: the institution agrees that the resulting star awards may be published and displayed on QS platforms and used in the institution’s own materials. If either element is missing, the rating is normally not shown publicly, even if an internal assessment has taken place. This is why searching for a well-known university on a QS Stars listing and finding nothing tells you almost nothing about that university’s teaching, facilities or employability.

4. Why the System Works This Way | 为什么这套机制如此设计

There are three practical reasons. First, the assessment is a service with real costs, including analyst time, data verification and administration, so it is funded by the participating institution rather than by the public. Second, institutions need control over how their own data and positioning are presented, particularly where a weak category score could be commercially damaging in a competitive recruitment market. Third, mutual consent protects both sides legally and reputationally: QS publishes only what the institution has agreed to have published, and the institution can point to an agreed, auditable result rather than an unattributed claim.

5. What an Absence Does Not Prove | “查不到”不能证明什么

Because participation is voluntary and publication is conditional, an institution’s absence from QS Stars listings is ambiguous evidence. It can mean the institution has never applied, has applied but not consented to publication, has let a previous rating lapse, or has chosen to spend its marketing budget elsewhere. It does not mean the institution failed an assessment, and it certainly does not mean the institution is low quality. The same logic applies in reverse: the presence of a star rating shows that an institution chose to be assessed and to be transparent about the outcome, which is a genuine signal of process, but it is not a complete measure of the student experience.

6. The Categories Assessed |

QS Stars assesses institutions across several broad categories, with the exact indicators and weightings set out in the published methodology. The table below summarises the categories most commonly referenced, together with the kind of evidence typically associated with each. Methodology documents are revised periodically, so always check the current version before relying on a specific indicator.

Typical Focus
Teaching 教学 Staff qualifications, student-staff ratio, satisfaction and progression data
Graduate outcomes, employer reputation, career services and internships
Internationalisation 国际化 International student and staff proportions, partnerships, support services
Research 科研 Publication volume, citation impact, research income and doctoral activity
Facilities 设施 Libraries, laboratories, sports and accommodation, campus infrastructure
Distance provision, learning platform quality, student support at a distance
Innovation 创新 Entrepreneurship, spin-outs, incubators, knowledge exchange
Creative provision, cultural events, partnerships with arts organisations
Inclusiveness 包容性 Access and widening participation, disability support, scholarship provision
Subject-specific benchmarks for specialist or single-faculty institutions

7. Where the Data Comes From | 数据从哪里来

Star ratings are built from a mixture of sources rather than a single dataset. Institutions supply a structured self-assessment with supporting documentation. QS contributes data it already collects, including large-scale surveys of academics and employers. Third-party bibliometric databases are used for research indicators such as publication counts and citation impact. In some cases additional verification, such as documentary audit or a campus visit, forms part of the process. This mixed model is one reason the rating is described as an audit: the institution’s claims are meant to be evidenced, not simply asserted.

8. Validity and Re-evaluation |

A star rating is a snapshot, not a permanent property of an institution. Awards are typically valid for a limited period, after which the institution must re-engage and be reassessed to retain the right to display the stars. This means an old badge on a prospectus, a partner agent’s slide deck, or an archived web page may no longer reflect the current award. When you see a star claim, always look for the date of the assessment and the version of the methodology used, and check whether the award is still live on the institution’s current QS profile.

9. Reading Star Claims in Marketing |

Institutional marketing tends to present the highest available number, which is legitimate but selective. A “five-star university” claim may refer to one category rather than the overall award, or to an overall award obtained under an earlier methodology. A rigorous reading asks four questions: which category, which year, which methodology version, and is it the overall rating or a component rating? Asking these questions is not cynicism; it is simply the same standard of evidence you would apply to any other claim in a prospectus.

10. How Applicants Should Use It | 申请者应如何使用

QS Stars is most useful as a structured checklist for asking better questions, not as a verdict. If an institution holds a strong employability rating, ask for the underlying graduate outcome data and the sample size. If it holds a strong facilities rating, ask which facilities are accessible to undergraduates in your subject. If it holds no rating at all, do not treat that as a red flag, but do ask the admissions office directly whether the institution participates in any external audit or accreditation scheme, and which one.

11. Common Misreadings and a Checklist |

The misunderstandings below appear repeatedly in agent briefings, school counsellor sessions and student forums. Most of them stem from forgetting the publication condition described in Section 3.

  • Misreading: “It is not on the QS Stars list, so it must be a weak university.” Correction: absence usually reflects non-participation or non-consent, not a failed assessment.
  • Misreading: “Five stars means it is ranked first.” Correction: ratings are benchmark-based and can be shared by many institutions. |
  • Misreading: “It has stars, so it is a fully audited guarantee of quality.” Correction: it is a criterion-referenced audit of evidence supplied within a defined methodology.
  • Misreading: “The badge is permanent.” Correction: awards expire and require re-assessment. |

A practical checklist before you rely on any star claim: confirm the assessment date; confirm whether it is an overall or category award; confirm the methodology version; cross-check with independent sources such as national quality assurance bodies, professional accreditation, published graduate outcome surveys and subject-level rankings; and treat the star rating as one input among several rather than as a proxy for the whole student experience.
