Since the reform of GCSE, AS and A-level qualifications in England, modern foreign languages (MFL) have been assessed through fully linear, terminal examinations with no coursework, a much stronger emphasis on authentic target-language material and culture, and compulsory translation. This guide sets out the key rules that govern reformed AS and A-level MFL specifications, from the decoupling of AS from A-level to the structure of the speaking test and the independent research project.

1. The Reform at a Glance | 改革总览

Reformed MFL specifications were first taught in England from September 2016. The first AS exams were sat in summer 2017 and the first A-level exams in summer 2018. All assessment is linear: candidates sit every paper at the end of the course, and the final grade depends on one set of terminal exams.

2. Decoupling of AS and A-Level | AS 与 A-level 的脱钩

AS and A-level are now decoupled. AS is a standalone qualification and its marks no longer count towards the A-level grade, so a strong AS result does not carry forward into Year 13.

All reformed specifications are built around core content areas. Boards must cover social trends and issues, and at least one further area drawn from political, historical and/or artistic culture.

Students must study at least one theme linked to a country or community where the target language is spoken, and these themes are assessed across every paper, including the speaking test.
