What the Six Categories of the Best Student Cities Ranking Measure |

📚 What the Six Categories of the Best Student Cities Ranking Measure |

Every year, rankings of the best student cities summarise an enormous amount of information about dozens of cities into a single ordered list. That simplicity is useful for applicants, but it hides the real question: what is actually being measured? The QS Best Student Cities ranking, the best-known example of this genre, publishes six categories – Rankings, Student Mix, Desirability, Employer Activity, Affordability and Student Voice – and each one answers a different question about a city. Understanding what each category captures, and what it ignores, turns the ranking from a league table into a decision-making tool.

1. What the Ranking Is For | 这个排名想解决什么问题

A city ranking exists because most applicants do not choose a university in isolation – they choose a place to live for three or four years. Two universities with similar reputations can offer completely different experiences depending on rent, safety, transport, part-time work opportunities and the size of the international community. The six categories were designed to spread the decision across all of those dimensions rather than concentrating only on academic reputation.

It is also worth noting that these rankings are produced by an organisation that also publishes university rankings and sells services to universities. That does not make the data wrong, but it does mean you should treat the methodology as something to read, not something to trust blindly.

2. The Six Categories at a Glance |

The six categories are not six versions of the same thing. Each one uses different data sources and answers a distinct question.

Category 类别 What it measures 衡量什么 Typical data source 常见数据来源
The number and standing of internationally ranked universities in the city QS World University Rankings
How large and how diverse the student population is, including international share Institutional data, social inclusion indices
Quality of life, safety, pollution, corruption, and how appealing students find the city Numbeo, Transparency International, student surveys
How employers value graduates from the city and how strong the local graduate job market is Employer reputation surveys, employment data
Tuition fees and the cost of living students actually face Tuition data, cost-of-living indices
What current international students say about studying there International student surveys

Notice that only one of the six categories – Rankings – is about academic reputation. The other five are about the conditions surrounding your studies.

3. Rankings: The Concentration of Strong Universities |

The Rankings category asks how many internationally recognised universities a city contains and how high they sit in global university tables. It is fundamentally a measure of concentration. A city with five universities inside the global top 200 will almost always score higher than a city with one outstanding institution, even if that single institution is the stronger of them all.

This has two practical implications for applicants.

  • First, a high score can mean breadth rather than excellence. If you already know exactly which university you want, the city score matters less than that university’s own position.

  • Second, a lower-ranked city may still contain a top department in your subject. City-level scores are averaged across disciplines and cannot capture subject-specific strength.

The widely used abbreviation QS stands for Quacquarelli Symonds, the company that compiles the ranking – worth knowing when you read citations in Chinese-language media.

4. Student Mix: Who Studies There | 学生构成:谁在这里读书

Student Mix measures the composition of the student body rather than its quality. Typical sub-indicators include the number of students in the city as a proportion of the total population, the proportion of those students who are international, and measures of social inclusion or tolerance in the wider city.

Why does this matter? Because it predicts your day-to-day experience more accurately than almost any other category.

  • A city where students make up a large share of the population tends to have student pricing on transport, nightlife and housing, and a public rhythm built around the academic calendar.

  • A city with a high international student share is more likely to have administrative systems, English-language services and social networks designed for people arriving from abroad.

If you are choosing between a large, diverse metropolis and a smaller, more homogeneous city, Student Mix is the category that speaks most directly to that trade-off.

5. Desirability: Would You Want to Live There?

Desirability combines objective quality-of-life data with the subjective views of prospective students. Objective components typically include pollution levels, crime and safety indicators, and perceived levels of corruption. Subjective components come from surveys asking students whether they would like to study in a given city.

This category is the one most likely to be misunderstood, because “desirable” does not mean “comfortable for you in particular”.

  • A city can score well on desirability because of its global reputation, even if you would find it crowded, expensive and impersonal.

  • Safety and pollution indicators are averaged across the whole city, not the specific district where your campus sits.

Read Desirability as a rough signal about living conditions, then verify it against neighbourhood-level information for the campus you are actually considering.

6. Employer Activity: Will It Help You Get Hired? |

Employer Activity measures how favourably employers regard graduates of the city’s universities, and how healthy the local graduate labour market is. The dominant input is a large international survey in which employers are asked to identify the institutions they consider to produce the best graduates. Some editions also incorporate employment indicators such as youth employment rates or the density of graduate employers in the city.

Two cautions are worth keeping in mind.

  • Employer reputation is measured globally but applied locally. A university may be famous to employers worldwide while the city around it offers few entry-level roles in your field.

  • For students planning to return home after graduation, the label of the university usually matters more than the reputation of the city’s job market.

Employer Activity is therefore most relevant if you intend to work in the host country or region after graduating.

7. Affordability: Can You Actually Pay for It?

Affordability combines the two costs that determine your budget: tuition fees and living expenses. Tuition data is usually gathered at institutional level and averaged for the city, distinguishing where possible between domestic and international rates. Living costs are typically drawn from cost-of-living databases covering rent, groceries, transport and utilities.

This category rewards cities where the total cost of attendance is low relative to what you receive. That produces some counter-intuitive results.

  • Low tuition does not guarantee affordability. A city with free tuition but very high rent can score worse than one with moderate fees and cheap housing.

  • Index scores hide currency effects. If your family earns in one currency and you pay in another, exchange-rate movement can change your real budget more than any ranking position.

Use Affordability as a screening filter rather than a ranking criterion. Decide your maximum annual budget first, then treat the score as supporting evidence.

8. Student Voice: What Students Themselves Say |

Student Voice is built from surveys of current international students, who are asked about their overall satisfaction with the city, whether they would recommend it, and whether they intend to stay after graduation. It is the only category that is entirely subjective, and the only one that captures the experience of people who have actually done what you are considering.

Its value and its weakness are the same thing: it reflects lived experience, and lived experience is not representative.

  • Survey respondents self-select. Students who are unhappy are less likely to complete a satisfaction survey than students who are enthusiastic.

  • Answers are shaped by the respondent’s own expectations, subject, budget and language ability – none of which match yours exactly.

Even so, Student Voice is often the most useful category for the questions that other categories cannot answer: Is it easy to make friends? Is the bureaucracy manageable? Do students feel safe at night?

9. How the Six Categories Are Weighted |

The six categories are combined into a single city score. In its simplest form the calculation looks like this:

City Score = w₁ × Rankings + w₂ × Student Mix + w₃ × Desirability + w₄ × Employer Activity + w₅ × Affordability + w₆ × Student Voice

Each wₙ is a weight, and the weights sum to one:

w₁ + w₂ + w₃ + w₄ + w₅ + w₆ = 1

The critical point for applicants is that the weights themselves are a choice, not a fact. Several editions of the ranking have derived these weights from surveys of prospective international students, asking what matters most to them. Other editions have used different weighting schemes, and the sub-indicators inside each category have also changed over time.

  • Never compare total scores across different editions of the ranking. Only the current year’s scores are internally consistent.

  • If you disagree with the weights, you can build your own score. Take the six category scores, apply your own weights, and re-order the cities yourself.

A student whose family is funding everything and who plans to stay abroad would rationally weight Affordability and Employer Activity far more heavily than the published scheme does.

10. What the Six Categories Do Not Measure |

A ranking can only measure what it can collect data on. Several matters that matter enormously to individual applicants fall outside all six categories.

  • Subject strength 专业实力: a city-level score cannot tell you whether the specific department you want is excellent or mediocre.

  • Admission reality 录取现实: a highly ranked city you cannot get into is not a real option.

  • Language environment 语言环境: a city can be diverse and still have almost no English-language everyday life outside campus.

  • Visa and post-study work rules 签证与毕业工作政策: these are set nationally and are not part of the six categories, yet they often decide whether a city is worth choosing.

  • Personal fit 个人契合度: climate, food, distance from family, religious and cultural community – none of it is captured.

Treat the six categories as a description of the city, not a prescription for you.

11. Using the Six Categories to Build a Shortlist |

The most practical use of the six categories is not to rank cities but to eliminate them. A shortlist built category by category is usually better than one built from the overall table.

  • Step 1 – Affordability as a filter Set a maximum annual cost and remove every city above it.

  • Step 2 – Rankings within your subject Check subject-level tables, not only institutional ones.

  • Step 3 – Student Mix for lifestyle Decide how much international community and student infrastructure you want.

  • Step 4 – Employer Activity against your plan Weight it heavily only if you intend to work locally after graduation.

  • Step 5 – Student Voice for the last questions Read the open comments, not just the score.

After this process, you will usually be left with three to six cities, which is a workable number for campus visits, application planning and honest conversations with your family about money.

12. Quick Reference and Common Misreadings |

The table below summarises the six categories as questions you can ask directly.

Are there strong universities here? Treating city score as subject strength
Who will my classmates and neighbours be?
Is this a good place to live? Confusing global fame with personal comfort
Will local employers value my degree? Ignoring
