📚 IB Physics: Photoelectric Effect Key Points | IB

The photoelectric effect is a phenomenon where electrons are emitted from a metal surface when light of sufficient frequency shines on it. This effect, explained by Albert Einstein in 1905, provided crucial evidence for the particle nature of light and earned him the Nobel Prize. In IB Physics, understanding the photoelectric effect, including Einstein’s equation, threshold frequency, stopping potential, and experimental graphs, is essential for mastering quantum physics.

    1. What is the Photoelectric Effect? |

The photoelectric effect is the emission of electrons from a metal surface when electromagnetic radiation of a sufficiently high frequency is incident upon it. The emitted electrons are called photoelectrons.

This phenomenon was first observed by Heinrich Hertz in 1887 and later studied in detail by Philipp Lenard, but classical wave theory could not explain its key features.

    2. The Photon Model |

To explain the photoelectric effect, Einstein proposed that light consists of discrete packets of energy called photons. The energy of each photon is proportional to its frequency: E = h f, where h is Planck’s constant (6.63×10⁻³⁴ J s).

A single photon can interact with a single electron, transferring all its energy instantaneously. There is no time delay because the energy is delivered in a one-to-one collision.

The photon also carries momentum p = h / λ, although this is not directly involved in the photoelectric effect itself.

    3. Einstein’s Photoelectric Equation |

Einstein’s photoelectric equation describes the energy balance in the emission process:

    Ek,max = h f − φ

where Ek,max is the maximum kinetic energy of the emitted photoelectrons, hf is the photon energy, and φ is the work function of the metal—the minimum energy required to release an electron from the metal surface.

If the photon energy is less than the work function (hf < φ), no electrons are emitted, regardless of the light intensity.

    4. Work Function and Threshold Frequency |

The work function φ is a characteristic property of each metal. The threshold frequency f0 is the minimum frequency of incident light that can cause photoemission. It is related to the work function by:

    功函数 φ 是每种金属的特性。截止频率 f0 是能够引起光电发射的最低入射光频率。它与功函数的关系为:

    f0 = φ / h

Below this frequency, no photoelectrons are emitted, no matter how intense the light is.

Typical work function values (in eV) and threshold frequencies for common metals are shown below.

Metal Work Function φ (eV) Threshold Frequency f0 (×10¹⁴ Hz)
    Sodium (Na) 2.28 5.51
    Calcium (Ca) 2.87 6.94
    Zinc (Zn) 4.33 10.5
    Platinum (Pt) 6.35 15.3

    5. Stopping Potential |

To measure the maximum kinetic energy of photoelectrons, a reverse potential is applied. The stopping potential Vs is the potential difference that just stops the most energetic electrons from reaching the collector. It satisfies:

    e Vs = Ek,max

where e is the elementary charge (1.60×10⁻¹⁹ C). This relation allows the experimental determination of Ek,max.

When the applied voltage equals Vs, the photocurrent drops to zero.

    6. Experimental Setup |

A typical photoelectric effect experiment uses an evacuated quartz tube containing a metal cathode and an anode. Monochromatic light illuminates the cathode, and the emitted photoelectrons travel to the anode, creating a current measured by a sensitive ammeter. A variable DC power supply allows the voltage between cathode and anode to be adjusted, including reversal of polarity.

By plotting the photocurrent against the applied voltage for different light frequencies and intensities, the key characteristics of the effect are revealed.

    7. Current–Voltage (I–V) Characteristics |

For a fixed frequency and intensity, as the forward voltage increases, the photocurrent rises and eventually reaches a saturation value, where all emitted photoelectrons are collected.

If the light intensity is increased while keeping frequency constant, the saturation current increases proportionally, because more photons per second release more electrons.

When a reverse voltage is applied, the photocurrent decreases. The voltage at which the current becomes zero is the stopping potential Vs. Importantly, Vs does not depend on the light intensity but increases linearly with the light frequency.

These I–V characteristics are perfectly explained by the photon model but contradict the classical wave theory.

    8. Key Experimental Observations |

Observation 1: There exists a threshold frequency f0 below which no photoelectrons are emitted, regardless of the light intensity. Classical wave theory predicts that any frequency should cause emission if the intensity is high enough, which is false.

Observation 2: The maximum kinetic energy of photoelectrons depends only on the frequency of the incident light, not on its intensity. Increasing intensity only increases the number of photoelectrons (photocurrent), not their maximum kinetic energy.

Observation 3: Photoemission is instantaneous. As soon as light of sufficient frequency strikes the metal, photoelectrons are ejected with no measurable time delay. Wave theory would require a time lag for an electron to accumulate enough energy from the wave front.

Observation 4: The stopping potential is independent of light intensity, further supporting that photon energy (hf) determines kinetic energy, not intensity.

    9. Maximum Kinetic Energy vs Frequency Graph |

Plotting the maximum kinetic energy Ek,max (or e Vs) against the frequency f yields a straight line. The gradient of this line equals Planck’s constant h, and the x-intercept gives the threshold frequency f0. The relationship is:

    Ek,max = h f − φ

This linear graph was a milestone in the acceptance of the photon model. The slope is independent of the metal used, while the intercept (−φ) varies with the metal.

In the IB exam, you may be asked to determine h and φ from such a graph. Remember to convert eV to joules if required: 1 eV = 1.60×10⁻¹⁹ J.

    10. Photon Momentum and the Photoelectric Effect |

Although the photoelectric effect primarily demonstrates the energy quantization of light, the photon model also ascribes momentum p = h / λ to each photon. Compton scattering later provided direct evidence for photon momentum, but in the photoelectric effect the momentum transfer does not affect the emission threshold or kinetic energy relations.

It is useful to recall that a photon’s energy and momentum are linked by E = p c, where c is the speed of light. This reinforces the particle-like behaviour when light interacts with matter.

    11. Common Exam Tips and Misconceptions |

Tip 1: Always write Einstein’s equation as Ek,max = h f − φ, and clearly define all terms. Marks are often awarded for stating that φ is the minimum energy to remove an electron.

Tip 2: Distinguish between the energy of a single photon (hf) and the intensity (power per unit area, related to the number of photons per second).

Misconception: Many students think that increasing intensity increases the kinetic energy of photoelectrons. In reality, intensity affects the number of emitted electrons, not the maximum kinetic energy.

Misconception: A brighter light of low frequency cannot cause photoemission, even if it is extremely intense, because each photon energy is still below the work function.

Misconception: The stopping potential depends on the metal’s work function and the incident frequency, but not on the intensity. If a question asks what happens when intensity is doubled, Vs remains unchanged while the saturation current doubles.

Graph analysis: In Ek,max vs f graphs, ensure you can calculate h from the gradient (in J s) and φ from the y-intercept (in J or eV). If the graph uses stopping potential e Vs, the gradient is h/e.

📚 GCSE WJEC Physics: Kinetics – Key Revision Points | GCSE WJEC

In the WJEC GCSE Physics specification, the topic of kinetics – covering motion, forces, and momentum – forms a core part of Unit 2 (Forces, Space and Radioactivity). Mastering these concepts is essential for success in the examination, as they underpin many real-world applications and link to other topics such as energy and waves.

    1. Distance and Displacement |

Distance is a scalar quantity that measures how much ground an object has covered during its motion, regardless of direction. Displacement is a vector quantity that measures the shortest straight-line distance from the initial position to the final position, including direction.

If a runner completes one full lap on a 400 m track, the distance travelled is 400 m, but the displacement is 0 m because the start and end points coincide.

    2. Speed and Velocity |

Speed is a scalar quantity defined as the rate of change of distance. It can be calculated using: speed = distance / time. Velocity is a vector quantity defined as the rate of change of displacement. It has both magnitude and direction.

An object moving at constant speed in a circle has a changing velocity because its direction is constantly changing, even though the speed is constant.

    3. Acceleration | 加速度

Acceleration is the rate of change of velocity. It is a vector quantity, measured in metres per second squared (m/s²). The formula is: acceleration = change in velocity / time taken, or a = (v – u) / t, where u is initial velocity and v is final velocity.

Deceleration (negative acceleration) indicates that an object is slowing down. The magnitude of deceleration is simply the magnitude of negative acceleration.

    4. Equations of Motion (SUVAT) |

For objects moving with constant acceleration in a straight line, the five SUVAT equations link displacement (s), initial velocity (u), final velocity (v), acceleration (a) and time (t).

    对于在直线上以恒定加速度运动的物体,五个运动方程将位移 s、初速度 u、末速度 v、加速度 a 和时间 t 联系起来。

    Equation Missing variable
    v = u + a t s
    s = ½ (u + v) t a
    s = u t + ½ a t² v
    s = v t − ½ a t² u
    v² = u² + 2 a s t

These equations can only be used when acceleration is uniform. If acceleration changes, you must use graphical methods or break the motion into segments of constant acceleration.

    5. Forces and Newton’s First Law |

A force is a push or a pull that can change an object’s shape, speed, or direction. Newton’s First Law states that an object will remain at rest or move with constant velocity unless acted upon by a resultant external force.

This law introduces the concept of inertia – the tendency of an object to resist changes in its motion. The greater the mass, the greater the inertia.

    6. Newton’s Second Law (F = ma) |

Newton’s Second Law explains what happens when a resultant force acts on a mass: the acceleration produced is directly proportional to the resultant force and inversely proportional to the mass.

    牛顿第二定律解释了当合力作用在质量上时会发生什么:产生的加速度与合力成正比,与质量成反比。

    F = m a

The unit of force is the newton (N). 1 N is the force required to give a mass of 1 kg an acceleration of 1 m/s².

In WJEC exams, you will often need to apply F = ma in problems involving cars, falling objects, or balanced and unbalanced forces.

    7. Newton’s Third Law |

Newton’s Third Law states that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. The forces are always of the same type, act on different objects, and are equal in magnitude but opposite in direction.

Common examples include the thrust of a rocket (gas pushed backward, rocket pushed forward) and the support force of a table on a book (book pushes down, table pushes up).

    8. Resultant Forces and Free-body Diagrams |

The resultant force is the single force that has the same effect as all the individual forces acting on an object. It determines the acceleration according to F = ma. A free-body diagram shows all the forces acting on one object, often with arrows representing their magnitudes and directions.

When forces are balanced, the resultant force is zero, and the object either remains at rest or continues at constant velocity (Newton’s First Law). When unbalanced, the object accelerates in the direction of the resultant force.

    9. Terminal Velocity |

When an object falls through a fluid (air or liquid), it experiences drag force that opposes its motion. Initially, weight is greater than drag, so the object accelerates downward. As speed increases, drag increases until it balances the weight. At this point, the resultant force becomes zero and the object falls at a constant speed – the terminal velocity.

Terminal velocity explains why skydivers reach a maximum speed before opening their parachutes and why a feather falls slower than a stone in air.

    10. Stopping Distance |

The total stopping distance of a vehicle is the sum of the thinking distance (distance travelled while the driver reacts) and the braking distance (distance travelled while the brakes slow the car).

Thinking distance can be affected by tiredness, alcohol, drugs, or distractions. Braking distance depends on speed, road conditions, tyre conditions, and the mass of the vehicle.

With doubled speed, the braking distance increases by a factor of four, because the kinetic energy is proportional to speed squared.

    11. Momentum | 动量

Momentum is a vector quantity defined as the product of an object’s mass and velocity. It is measured in kilogram metres per second (kg m/s).

    动量是一个矢量,定义为物体质量与速度的乘积,单位为千克米每秒 (kg m/s)。

    p = m v

The larger the mass or the velocity, the greater the momentum. An object at rest has zero momentum.

    12. Conservation of Momentum |

In a closed system (no external forces), the total momentum before a collision or explosion equals the total momentum after the event. This principle allows us to calculate unknown velocities.

For example, when two trolleys collide and stick together (inelastic collision): m₁ u₁ + m₂ u₂ = (m₁ + m₂) v. For an explosion where a stationary object breaks apart: 0 = m₁ v₁ + m₂ v₂.

Momentum is also conserved in elastic collisions where kinetic energy is conserved as well, though GCSE usually focuses on momentum conservation only.

📚 AS Physics Unit 1 Mark Scheme Jan 2022: Formula Derivation | AS物理第一单元2022年1月评分方案:公式推导

The Edexcel AS Physics Unit 1 exam in January 2022 tested students’ ability to derive fundamental equations from first principles. The mark scheme reveals exactly how examiners award marks for clear logical steps, correct algebraic manipulation, and proper use of definitions. This article breaks down the key derivations expected in that exam and explains the marking requirements, helping you secure full marks in derivation questions.

    1. Understanding the Mark Scheme Requirements |

The mark scheme for derivation questions typically allocates ‘M’ marks for method, ‘A’ marks for accuracy, and sometimes ‘B’ marks for stating key relationships or assumptions. For a perfect answer, you must show all intermediate steps, state any assumptions (such as constant acceleration or absence of external forces), and include the final formula in its standard form.

Examiners will look for the use of fundamental definitions, such as a = (v-u)/t or average velocity = (u+v)/2, as the starting point. Missing a logical step or skipping algebraic manipulation can cause you to lose marks even if the final answer is correct.

    2. Foundations: Definitions and Assumptions |

Before any derivation, it is essential to state the definitions and assumptions you will use. For uniformly accelerated motion, acceleration is constant: a = constant. The definition of acceleration is a = (v-u)/t, where v is final velocity, u is initial velocity, and t is time.

Displacement s or x is the area under a velocity-time graph. This geometric interpretation is often the quickest route to the kinematic equations. The assumption of constant acceleration means the v-t graph is a straight line.

For dynamics derivations, Newton’s second law F = ma and the definition of work W = Fs cosθ (with θ = 0 for motion in a straight line) are the foundation. It is assumed that mass remains constant.

    3. Deriving Displacement–Time Equation x = ut + ½at² | 推导位移-时间方程 x = ut + ½at²

This derivation is a classic AS Physics question. Start by sketching

Momentum is one of the fundamental quantities in Edexcel A Level Physics, linking mass and velocity to describe the ‘quantity of motion’ an object possesses. This topic not only deepens your understanding of Newton’s laws but also provides powerful tools for analysing collisions, explosions, and impulse. Mastering momentum is essential for tackling both structured questions and the longer, context‑based problems in Paper 1 and Paper 2.

    1. Definition and Formula |

Linear momentum (p) of an object is defined as the product of its mass (m) and its velocity (v). It is a measure of how difficult it is to stop a moving object.

    物体的线动量(p)定义为其质量(m)与速度(v)的乘积。它是衡量一个运动的物体有多难被停下来的物理量。

    p = m v

Momentum is measured in kg m s⁻¹ (kilogram metre per second) or equivalently N s (newton second). The direction of momentum is the same as the direction of the object’s velocity.

A heavier or faster object will have a larger momentum, meaning a greater force (or longer time) is needed to change its motion.

    2. Momentum as a Vector |

Momentum is a vector quantity, so both magnitude and direction are important. When solving problems involving motion in opposite directions, you must assign positive and negative signs to velocities, and thus to momenta.

For example, consider two trolleys moving towards each other: if we take right as positive, the right‑moving trolley has positive momentum and the left‑moving trolley has negative momentum.

The vector nature of momentum is crucial in the principle of conservation of momentum, where momenta in opposite directions partially or fully cancel each other out.

    3. Impulse and Momentum Change |

Impulse (J) is defined as the change in momentum of an object when a force acts over a time interval. This is derived from Newton’s second law in its more general form.

    冲量(J)定义为力在一段时间间隔内作用时物体动量的变化量。它是从更普遍的牛顿第二定律形式推导出来的。

    F = Δp / Δt    or    J = Δp = F Δt

The equation F = Δp / Δt shows that the rate of change of momentum is equal to the resultant force acting on the object. This is the version of Newton’s second law used at A Level.

Impulse has the same units as momentum (N s or kg m s⁻¹) and is also a vector quantity, with direction the same as the force applied.

In many exam problems, calculating impulse is the key to finding average force or the change in velocity of an object.

    4. Impulse from Force–Time Graphs |

The area under a force–time graph represents the impulse delivered to an object. This is extremely useful when the force is not constant, as you can find the total impulse by estimating the area under the curve.

For a constant force, the graph is a horizontal line, and the area is simply F × Δt. For a variable force, the shape might be a triangle, trapezium, or an irregular shape that you can count squares to evaluate.

Remember that impulse is equal to the change in momentum, so once you have the impulse, you can use Δp = m v − m u to find final velocity, initial velocity, or mass.

Typical Edexcel questions will ask: ‘Use the graph to estimate the impulse’ and then ‘Hence determine the maximum speed’ of an object initially at rest.

    5. Principle of Conservation of Momentum |

The total momentum of a closed system remains constant, provided no external forces act on the system. This principle is derived from Newton’s third law and is a cornerstone of collision and explosion problems.

m₁ u₁ + m₂ u₂ = m₁ v₁ + m₂ v₂

In any interaction between two objects, the momentum lost by one object is equal to the momentum gained by the other. The total momentum before the event equals the total momentum after.

You must carefully define a positive direction before writing the conservation equation. Velocities in the opposite direction take negative signs; getting the signs right is the most common source of error.

This law applies to all types of collisions and explosions, whether the objects stick together or bounce apart.

    6. Elastic and Inelastic Collisions |

Collisions can be classified as elastic or inelastic based on whether kinetic energy is conserved, in addition to momentum always being conserved.

In an elastic collision, both momentum and total kinetic energy are conserved. No energy is dissipated as heat, sound, or deformation.

    ½ m₁ u₁² + ½ m₂ u₂² = ½ m₁ v₁² + ½ m₂ v₂²

For two equal masses in an elastic head‑on collision, a notable result is that they exchange velocities (e.g., one stops, the other moves off with the incoming velocity).

In an inelastic collision, momentum is conserved but kinetic energy is not. Some of the initial kinetic energy is converted into other forms, usually heat and sound, or used to permanently deform the objects.

A perfectly inelastic collision is a special case where the two objects stick together and move with a common final velocity. Here kinetic energy loss is maximum.

Edexcel questions often ask you to determine whether a collision is elastic by calculating the total kinetic energy before and after.

    7. Explosions |

In an explosion, the total momentum of a system is conserved. The initial momentum is typically zero (one stationary object splitting into parts), so the total momentum after the explosion must also be zero.

The fragments fly apart with momenta that are equal in magnitude but opposite in direction, ensuring the vector sum is zero.

For two fragments: 0 = m₁ v₁ + m₂ v₂, which leads to v₂ = −(m₁ v₁)/m₂. The heavier fragment moves more slowly.

Kinetic energy is not conserved in an explosion; it comes from the chemical or potential energy stored in the system.

Gun recoil and the firing of a cannon are classic examples. The gun and the bullet acquire equal and opposite momenta.

    8. Collisions in Two Dimensions |

When objects collide at an angle, momentum is conserved separately in two perpendicular directions (usually x and y). You need to resolve velocities into components before applying the conservation principle.

For the x‑direction: m₁ u₁ cos θ₁ + m₂ u₂ cos θ₂ = m₁ v₁ cos φ₁ + m₂ v₂ cos φ₂.

对于 x 方向:m₁ u₁ cos θ₁ + m₂ u₂ cos θ₂ = m₁ v₁ cos φ₁ + m₂ v₂ cos φ₂。

For the y‑direction: m₁ u₁ sin θ₁ + m₂ u₂ sin θ₂ = m₁ v₁ sin φ₁ + m₂ v₂ sin φ₂.

对于 y 方向:m₁ u₁ sin θ₁ + m₂ u₂ sin θ₂ = m₁ v₁ sin φ₁ + m₂ v₂ sin φ₂。

If the collision is elastic, you also have the kinetic energy equation, giving a third relationship to find unknowns.

Many students find 2D momentum problems challenging because of the trigonometry involved. Practice resolving vectors and keeping signs consistent in each direction.

    9. Problem-solving Strategies |

A systematic approach is vital for momentum questions. Follow these steps:

    • Draw a clear before‑and‑after diagram, labeling masses and velocities with their directions.

    • Choose and clearly state a positive direction. Assign negative signs to all velocities (or components) in the opposite direction.

    • Write the conservation of momentum equation for the relevant direction(s). Use subscripts 1, 2 for objects, u for initial velocities, v for final velocities.

    • If the objects stick together, use the common final velocity (v₁ = v₂ = v).

    • If needed, apply the kinetic energy condition (elastic) or use impulse = change in momentum.

    • Solve the equations algebraically before substituting numbers to reduce errors.

    • Check that your final velocities have signs consistent with the motion you expected from the diagram.

    10. Common Misconceptions |

“Momentum and kinetic energy are the same thing.” — They are not. Momentum is a vector; kinetic energy is a scalar. Momentum depends linearly on v, while kinetic energy depends on v².

“Kinetic energy is always conserved.” — In most real collisions, kinetic energy is not conserved; only total energy is. Momentum is always conserved in a closed system.

“A heavier object always has more momentum.” — Not necessarily. A light, fast object can have the same momentum as a heavy, slow one (e.g., a bullet and a bowling ball).

“If the net force is zero, momentum changes.” — Newton’s first law tells us that with zero net force, velocity is constant, so momentum remains constant.

“Impulse is force.” — Impulse is force × time; it’s the effect of a force acting over a duration, causing a change in momentum.

    11. Exam Tips |

Edexcel exam questions frequently combine momentum with energy methods, especially in multi‑step problems. Always identify whether a collision is elastic or inelastic at the start.

When a question says ‘initially at rest’, total initial momentum is zero – a big simplification for explosions or recoil.

Watch out for unit conversions: mass must be in kg, velocity in m s⁻¹. If given in g or cm s⁻¹, convert first.

In force‑time graph questions, remember that area above the axis is positive impulse, below is negative impulse. Net impulse equals total change in momentum.

If you are asked to find the magnitude and direction of an impulse, giving both is essential for the marks. Simply ‘Impulse = 12 N s’ is incomplete; add the direction.

Practise past paper questions that involve drawing vector triangles for 2D momentum conservation. These often appear as higher‑tariff ‘stretch and challenge’ items.

📚 IB Physics: Techniques for Solving Application Problems | IB

Application problems in IB Physics require more than just memorising formulas; they demand analytical thinking, the ability to connect concepts, and clear communication of reasoning. This article shares essential techniques to help you approach any IB Physics application question with confidence.

    1. Dissecting the Problem Statement |

Read the problem carefully, highlight key terms, and identify exactly what is being asked. Look for command terms like ‘determine’, ‘explain’, ‘calculate’, and ensure you understand the context. Break down long scenarios into smaller parts.

    2. Identifying the Relevant Physics Principles |

Once the scenario is clear, ask yourself: Which topic(s) does this problem belong to? Is it mechanics, electricity, thermal physics, or waves? Often, IB problems combine multiple areas, so list the underlying principles like conservation of energy, Newton’s laws, or Kirchhoff’s rules.

    3. Drawing Clear Diagrams and Visuals |

A well-drawn diagram (free-body, circuit, ray, etc.) can transform an abstract problem into a concrete one. Include all forces, velocity vectors, current directions, and relevant coordinates. Label known quantities directly on the diagram. In exam conditions, diagrams do not need to be artistic but must be accurate.

    4. Listing Knowns, Unknowns and Constants |

Extract numerical data, variables, and constants from the problem. Create a table or list: ‘Given: mass m = 2.0 kg, initial speed u = 5.0 m/s; To find: final velocity v’. Include the units and pay attention to significant figures. If a quantity is implied (e.g., acceleration due to gravity g = 9.81 m/s²), specify it.

    5. Selecting the Right Equations and Models |

Match the knowns and unknowns to a suitable equation from the data booklet. For uniformly accelerated motion, you might use v = u + at, s = ut + ½at², or v² = u² + 2as. For electric circuits, use V = IR, P = VI. Check that all symbols correspond to the defined quantities and that the equation is applicable (e.g., constant acceleration).

    将已知量与未知量与数据手册中的合适方程进行匹配。针对匀加速直线运动,可选用 v = u + at、s = ut + ½at² 或 v² = u² + 2as。对电路使用 V = IR、P = VI。确保所有符号对应已定义的量,且方程适用(如加速度恒定)。

    v² = u² + 2as

    6. Unit Consistency and Dimensional Analysis | 单位一致与量纲分析

Always convert units to SI (metres, kilograms, seconds, amperes) before substitution. Write out units during calculations to catch mistakes. Dimensional analysis can quickly verify whether a derived formula is plausible: for instance, a speed equation must yield m/s. If the dimensions do not balance, re-check your algebra.

    代入前始终将单位换算为 SI(米、千克、秒、安培)。

    7. Step-by-Step Algebraic Manipulation |

Rearrange equations symbolically before plugging in numbers. This minimises arithmetic errors and often simplifies the expression. Show each step clearly: e.g., solving v² = u² + 2as for s gives s = (v² − u²)/(2a). Then substitute values and calculate, keeping intermediate results with enough precision, rounding only at the final answer.

    代入数值前先用符号整理方程。这样可减少运算错误,并常使表达式简化。清晰地展示每一步:如从 v² = u² + 2as 求 s 得到 s = (v² − u²)/(2a)。再代入数值计算,保留足够精度,最后才进行四舍五入。

    s = (v² − u²) / (2a)

    8. Interpreting Data and Graphs | 数据与图线解读

Many IB questions present experimental data, tables, or graphs. Learn to extract gradients, intercepts, and areas. Relate the gradient of a line to a physical quantity (e.g., gradient of v‑t graph = acceleration). When plotting, use sensible scales and clearly label axes with quantities and units. Apply the concept of best-fit lines and error bars where relevant.

    9. Checking the Physical Reasonableness |

After obtaining a numerical result, ask: Does this answer make sense? In a mechanics problem, a speed greater than 3×10⁸ m/s is impossible. In a circuit, a current of 500 A through a domestic appliance is unrealistic. Compare with typical values or orders of magnitude. If something seems off, trace back through your steps.

    10. Tackling Contextual and Multi-concept Problems |

IB Physics often embeds physics in real-world contexts. For example, a problem may combine energy conservation, projectile motion, and gravitational fields. Break the problem into manageable stages. Apply relevant principles to each stage separately, then link them through conserved quantities like total energy or momentum. Practice with past‑paper questions to build confidence.

    11. Time Management and Exam Tactics |

In Paper 2 and Paper 3, allocate time proportionally to marks. Read all questions first, then start with the ones you find easiest. If stuck on a part, move on and return later. For multiple-choice, eliminate obviously wrong options. Use the data booklet efficiently; know where each formula is located. Show all working for partial credit, even if the final answer isn’t perfect.

    12. Common Pitfalls and How to Avoid Them | 常见陷阱与规避方法

Watch out for missing forces (e.g., normal reaction, friction), direction sign errors, and confusion between average and instantaneous values. When using mgh for gravitational potential energy, set a clear reference level. In electricity, distinguish between emf and terminal potential difference. Always ask whether a process is vector or scalar and apply the rules accordingly. Regular self-checking will help you avoid these mistakes.

The A-Level Physics Unit 3 paper is fundamentally about practical skills: how to handle uncertainties, plot graphs, analyse data, and evaluate experimental procedures. Many marks are lost not because students don’t know the physics, but because they ignore the precise wording of mark schemes. This article dissects the January 2021 Unit 3 mark scheme to reveal the application question techniques that can turn a good answer into a full-mark response.

    1. Understanding the Unit 3 Exam Format | 了解 Unit 3 考试形式

The Unit 3 paper typically contains two sections: a data analysis task where you are given a set of experimental results to process, and a question requiring you to plan or evaluate an experiment. The January 2021 paper reinforced that marks are allocated not just for correct numerical answers but for showing clear working, stating assumptions, and using appropriate significant figures. Always read the introductory rubric carefully – the number of marks for each part gives a strong hint about the depth of answer required.

    2. Key Command Words in Mark Schemes |

The mark scheme for January 2021 reveals how examiners interpret command words. ‘Determine’ demands a calculation with a clear method – you must show the formula, substitution, and final value. ‘Estimate’ expects a reasoned approximation, often using percentage uncertainty checks. ‘Explain’ requires a step-by-step justification, not just a statement. ‘Evaluate’ means you must give both advantages and disadvantages. Memorising these meanings ensures you never leave marks unclaimed because you answered the wrong type of question.

    3. Calculating and Expressing Uncertainties |

A recurring feature in the January 2021 mark scheme is the strict handling of uncertainties. For a single reading, the absolute uncertainty is usually ± the resolution of the instrument. For repeated readings, it is half the range. When combining uncertainties, the rule for addition/subtraction is to add absolute uncertainties; for multiplication/division, you add percentage uncertainties. The mark scheme often awards a mark for converting all uncertainties to the same form (e.g., all percentage) before combining. Never express an uncertainty with more significant figures than the measurement itself.

    4. Plotting and Interpreting Graphs for Maximum Marks |

The mark scheme for the data analysis question expects a graph drawn with a sharp pencil on grid paper if a plotted graph is required. Axes must be labelled with quantity and unit, scales must be linear and cover more than half the grid, and points must be plotted as small crosses or encircled dots. The January 2021 scheme penalised candidates who did not draw a line of best fit correctly – the line must have an even spread of points on each side. When calculating gradient, you must use a large triangle and show the coordinates used. The intercept is read directly from the graph, and both values must be given to an appropriate number of significant figures based on the raw data.

    5. Linearising Equations to Determine Constants |

Many relationships in physics are non-linear, but the Unit 3 mark scheme rewards candidates who can manipulate an equation into the form y = mx + c. For instance, if the period T of a pendulum is related to length L by T = kL^n, taking logarithms gives log T = n log L + log k. A graph of log T against log L yields a straight line with gradient n and intercept log k. The January 2021 paper included a similar manipulation, and marks were specifically for stating what to plot, what the gradient represents, and how to calculate the constant from the intercept. Always explicitly state the converted variables and the relationship between gradient/intercept and the required constants.

    6. Drawing Conclusions and Evaluating Procedures |

When a question asks for a conclusion, you must refer back to the data or graph and state whether the results support the hypothesis within experimental uncertainty. The January 2021 mark scheme shows that a simple ‘yes’ or ‘no’ earns zero marks. Instead, compare the experimental value with the accepted value by calculating a percentage difference, and discuss whether this difference is larger or smaller than the total percentage uncertainty. For evaluation, identify at least two specific sources of error, explain their effect on the final result, and suggest realistic improvements. Vague statements like ‘human error’ are not credited.

    7. Handling Anomalous Data and Outliers |

The mark scheme instructs examiners to look for correct identification and handling of anomalous points. An outlier is a plotted point that lies far from the trend line. In January 2021, credit was given for circling the anomalous point on the graph, labelling it clearly, and either repeating the measurement or excluding it from the line of best fit, with a brief justification. Never erase an anomalous point – simply indicate that it was not used when drawing the line. The reasoning must mention that the point is inconsistent with the overall trend and possible causes (e.g., reading error, environmental fluctuation).

    8. Percentage Difference and Error Analysis |

A classic January 2021 mark scheme question required candidates to compare two values using percentage difference. The formula % difference = |experimental − accepted| / accepted × 100% is standard. However, many candidates lost a mark by not comparing this value with the estimated total percentage uncertainty. If the percentage difference exceeds the total percentage uncertainty, the result is not consistent with the accepted value, and systematic errors may be present. Always perform this comparison explicitly and state your judgement, as the mark scheme specifically awards marks for the comparison step.

    9. Common Pitfalls and How to Avoid Them | 常见失分点与规避方法

The January 2021 examiner report highlighted several recurring mistakes: failing to convert units before plotting (e.g., cm to m), using an incorrect number of significant figures in calculated quantities, confusing absolute and percentage uncertainties when combining, and drawing a curve instead of a straight line when linearisation was expected. To avoid these, get into the habit of writing a plan for each calculation: check units, list given values with their uncertainties, decide on the equation, and only then compute. After finishing, re-read the question to ensure you have answered exactly what was asked.

    10. Exam Technique: Time Management and Answer Structure |

Efficient use of the 90‑minute exam is critical. The mark scheme rewards structure: start with the parts carrying the most marks, and for longer descriptions use bullet points or numbered steps – as long as each point is a full sentence. In the January 2021 paper, a mark was often allocated simply for a clear layout with labelled diagrams or tables. Never leave an explanation question blank; even partial logic can score marks. Practise past papers under timed conditions, paying special attention to the mark scheme annotations like ‘allow’ or ‘reject’, which tell you exactly what phrasing is acceptable.

  • AS Physics Unit 2 Insert Jan19: Mastering Application Questions | AS

📚 AS Physics Unit 2 Insert Jan19: Mastering Application Questions | AS

In the Edexcel AS Physics Unit 2 exam (January 2019), an Insert booklet is provided containing essential data, formulae and often an experimental context. Application questions require you to select and apply the right information from this Insert to solve novel problems. Mastering these skills can significantly boost your performance.

    1. Understanding the Role of the Insert |

The Insert is not just a formula sheet; it often includes a scenario description, tables of measurements, and graphs that you must interpret. Begin by scanning the Insert to identify what is given, such as resistivities, refractive indices or wavelengths.

Application questions will ask you to extend beyond simple substitution; you might need to combine two formulas or estimate missing quantities using the data. Treat the Insert as your problem-solving toolkit.

    2. Extracting Key Constants and Data |

Common constants such as the Planck constant h = 6.63 × 10⁻³⁴ J s, the speed of light c = 3.00 × 10⁸ m s⁻¹ and the elementary charge e = 1.60 × 10⁻¹⁹ C are provided in the Insert. Always use the values given, not memorised ones, to avoid rounding errors.

For material-based questions, tables of resistivity or Young modulus are supplied. Identify the correct material (e.g. copper, glass) and note the corresponding value. Pay attention to prefixes like micro (µ) or nano (n).

    3. Applying Wave Equation and Snell’s Law |

The Insert typically includes the wave equation v = f λ and Snell’s law n₁ sin θ₁ = n₂ sin θ₂. In application questions, you may be given the frequency and wavelength in a medium and asked to find the refractive index or the angle of refraction.

A step-by-step approach: first calculate the wave speed in the medium using v = f λ, then compare it with the speed in vacuum to determine n = c / v. Ensure angles are measured from the normal, and use inverse sine correctly.

    逐步求解法:先用 v = f λ 计算介质中的波速,然后与真空中光速比较求出 n = c / v。确保角度从法线量起,正确使用反正弦函数。

    n = c / v = c / (f λ)

    4. Tackling Electricity and Circuit Problems | 攻克电路与电学问题

Electricity questions often involve the resistivity formula R = ρL / A, where A is the cross-sectional area. The Insert may give the diameter of a wire; remember to convert to radius and use A = π r².

For circuits, the Insert might provide a graph of I-V characteristics for a component. You need to read values from the graph and apply V = IR, or determine resistance from the gradient. Be prepared to combine resistances in series and parallel.

    对于电路,附加资料可能给出元件的 I-V 特性图。你需要从图中读取数值并应用 V = IR,或通过斜率求电阻。要能熟练计算串并联总电阻。

    R = V / I, R_total = R₁ + R₂ (series), 1/R_total = 1/R₁ + 1/R₂ (parallel)

    5. Material Properties and Young Modulus | 材料特性与杨氏模量

The formula for Young modulus E = stress / strain = (F/A) / (ΔL/L₀) is central. The Insert may provide a force-extension graph for a wire. Identify the elastic limit and use the linear region to calculate E.

Always convert units to SI: length in metres, area in m². The Insert values might be in mm² or cm; convert carefully. Remember that strain is dimensionless, so E has units of Pa (N m⁻²).

    6. Photoelectric Effect and Quantum Calculations |

Einstein’s photoelectric equation h f = φ + KE_max is a favourite application topic. The Insert may show a graph of stopping potential vs frequency. Use the gradient to find h and the intercept to determine the work function φ.

Pay attention to the conversion between joules and electronvolts: 1 eV = 1.60 × 10⁻¹⁹ J. The kinetic energy may be expressed as e V_stop. Always check whether the question asks for energy in J or eV.

    e V_stop = h f – φ

    7. Graph Interpretation from Insert Data |

Many Unit 2 application questions involve extracting information from graphs, such as wave superposition patterns, current-time for capacitor discharge, or load-extension curves. Read axis labels and units carefully.

When a graph shows a straight line, determine its equation (y = mx + c) and link the gradient or y-intercept to physical quantities. For example, in a discharge graph, the time constant τ can be found where I falls to 1/e of its initial value.

    当图像为直线时,确定其方程(y = mx + c),并将斜率或 y 截距与物理量关联。例如,在放电图中,时间常数 τ 可通过电流衰减至初值的 1/e 处求得。

    I = I₀ e^{-t/τ}, when t = τ, I = I₀ / e

    8. Avoiding Common Mistakes in Application Questions | 避免应用题中的常见错误

One frequent error is using the wrong formula for the context. The Insert lists many formulae; always check the ‘Physics at Work’ scenario to decide which one applies.

Another pitfall is misreading units or prefixes. If resistivity is given in Ω m but length in cm, convert everything to metres before calculation. Double-check powers of ten when using the Insert values like nano (10⁻⁹) or micro (10⁻⁶).

    9. Exam Technique: Using the Insert Efficiently |

Spend the first 2–3 minutes of reading time familiarising yourself with the Insert’s contents. Annotate key values and highlight the data you will need for each question to save time during writing.

When tackling a multi-step application question, write down the given quantities from the Insert first, then note the formula you plan to use. This structured approach reduces careless errors and ensures you do not miss any data.

    1. Understanding the Experimental Investigation Component |

In the 9630 International A2 Physics course, the practical investigation is assessed through a written paper that tests your ability to design experiments, handle data with uncertainties, and critically evaluate procedures. You will be expected to draw on knowledge from across the whole A2 syllabus, including mechanics, fields, waves, and nuclear physics.

Familiarity with the assessment objectives (AO3: experimental skills and investigations) is essential. Marks are awarded for clear planning, appropriate use of apparatus, correct recording of data, valid graphical analysis, and thoughtful evaluation of errors and limitations. Practice with past papers and specimen investigations will build your competence.

    2. Planning an Investigation |

Every successful investigation starts with a clear plan. Begin by identifying the independent variable (the one you change), the dependent variable (the one you measure) and any control variables that must remain constant to ensure a fair test. Formulate a specific research question, for example ‘How does the length of a pendulum affect its period?’ or ‘How does the temperature of a thermistor affect its resistance?’

Next, decide on an appropriate range and number of readings. For a linear relationship, at least six different values for the independent variable are recommended, with two repeats at each value to check consistency and allow calculation of mean values. Consider whether you need to pre-test extremes to ensure the apparatus can handle the range safely.

    3. Controlling Variables and Range Selection |

Highlight the key control variables explicitly in your plan. For instance, when investigating the acceleration of a trolley pulled by a force, you must keep the total mass of the system constant. Identify how you will control each variable – e.g., using identical springs, insulating containers, or performing experiments in a draught-free room.

Select a range for the independent variable that produces a measurable change in the dependent variable without exceeding equipment limits. If the expected relationship is proportional, the ratio of maximum to minimum independent variable should ideally be at least 5 or 10 to give a good spread of data. Also think about whether the steps should be equally spaced or concentrated where the response changes most rapidly.

    4. Selecting Apparatus and Techniques |

Name the instruments you would use and justify their precision. A metre ruler gives a resolution of ±1 mm, while a vernier caliper offers ±0.1 mm and a micrometer screw gauge provides ±0.01 mm. For time measurements, a stopwatch has a typical resolution of 0.01 s, but human reaction time usually dominates the uncertainty (±0.2 s or more). Where possible, use data-logging sensors to reduce timing errors.

A table of common apparatus and their uncertainties can help you make rapid decisions during planning:

Digital multimeter / 数字万用表 ±1 digit or ±0.5% of reading
    Stopwatch / 秒表 ±0.2 – 0.3 s (reaction)
    Thermometer (–10 to 110 °C) / 温度计 ±0.5 °C

Always record the absolute uncertainty of each instrument before you begin. Remember that a digital instrument’s uncertainty is at least ±1 in the last displayed digit, while an analog scale’s uncertainty is half the smallest division.

    5. Risk Assessment and Safety |

A brief risk assessment is often required in the planning stage. Identify potential hazards, such as masses falling, hot surfaces, electrical shocks, or radioactive sources. For each hazard, state a simple precaution: secure heavy stands with G-clamps, use heat-proof gloves, check insulation on leads, or handle sources with tongs and follow the inverse‑square law for safe distances.

In A2 investigations involving capacitors, ensure they are safely discharged before handling; when working with lasers, use appropriate eye protection and beam stops. Always reference relevant CLEAPSS or institutional safety guidelines if required.

    6. Making Measurements and Recording Data |

Take repeat readings to identify anomalies and improve reliability. For each value of the independent variable, take at least three measurements if possible, and calculate a mean. Record raw data in a well-designed table with clear headings, units, and consistent decimal places. For example: Length L / cm (±0.1 cm), Time t₁ / s, Time t₂ / s, Mean time tₘₑₐₙ / s, Period T / s (±0.2 s).

Use appropriate precision when recording calculated quantities. The number of significant figures should reflect the least accurate measurement. For instance, if a mean is derived from measurements to 0.01 s but the reaction uncertainty is 0.2 s, quote the period as 1.35 s rather than 1.3467 s.

    7. Data Processing and Uncertainty |

Calculate absolute and percentage uncertainties systematically. For a single measurement, the absolute uncertainty is the instrument resolution or the estimate of reading fluctuation. For a mean, the uncertainty can be estimated by half the range of repeat readings. The percentage uncertainty = (absolute uncertainty / mean value) × 100%.

When combining quantities, use these rules:

    • If adding or subtracting: absolute uncertainties add.
    • If multiplying or dividing: percentage uncertainties add.
    • For a quantity raised to a power n: multiply the percentage uncertainty by n.

Example: In the period T = 2π√(L/g), if L = 100.0 cm ± 0.2 cm, the percentage uncertainty in L is 0.2%. The percentage uncertainty in T² is 0.4% (since T² ∝ L). Propagate carefully when calculating derived quantities.

    8. Graphs and Linearisation |

Plotting a straight-line graph is one of the most powerful analysis tools in A2 Physics. Expect to linearise equations so that a gradient and intercept yield the required physical quantities. For a pendulum, you would plot T² against L to obtain gradient = 4π²/g. For a discharging capacitor, plot ln(V) against t to obtain gradient = –1/RC.

    绘制直线图形是 A2 物理中最强大的分析工具之一。你需要将方程线性化,使斜率和截距能得出所需的物理量。对于单摆,你应绘制 T² 对 L 的图形,斜率 = 4π²/g。对于放电电容器,绘制 ln(V) 对 t 的图形,斜率 = –1/RC。

    T² = (4π²/g) L

    ln(V) = ln(V₀) – (1/RC) t

Draw error bars on data points using the absolute uncertainty in each variable. Draw a best-fit line and also the steepest and shallowest possible straight lines that still pass through the error bars. Then calculate the maximum and minimum gradients. The uncertainty in the gradient is (gradientₘₐₓ – gradientₘᵢₙ)/2.

For logarithmic graphs, such as testing T = k Lⁿ, use log₁₀ T = n log₁₀ L + log₁₀ k. The gradient gives n, and the intercept gives log₁₀ k. Be comfortable using both natural and base‑10 logarithms.

    9. Evaluating Results and Sources of Error |

After obtaining a numerical result, compare it with an accepted value or theoretical prediction using percentage difference: |experimental – accepted| / accepted × 100%. If the accepted value lies within your experimental uncertainty range, the result is considered consistent.

Identify and discuss both systematic and random errors. Systematic errors (e.g., zero error on a voltmeter, parallax when reading a ruler) affect accuracy and can be reduced by calibration or better technique. Random errors (e.g., fluctuation in readings, reaction time) affect precision and can be minimised by taking many repeats and using data loggers.

Suggest specific improvements to the method. Instead of generic statements like ‘use better equipment’, propose practical refinements: replace a metre ruler with a vernier scale, use an electromagnet to release a pendulum consistently, or shield a thermistor from draughts. Always explain how each improvement reduces a named error.

    10. Drawing Conclusions and Writing a Report |

State your conclusion clearly, referring to the data and graphical analysis. For instance: ‘As the length of the pendulum increases, the period squared increases proportionally, confirming the relationship T² ∝ L. The experimental value of g is 9.78 m s⁻² ± 0.12 m s⁻², which agrees with the accepted value of 9.81 m s⁻² within the uncertainty.’

A concise report should include: aim, method sketch, data table with uncertainties, graph, calculations, final value with absolute and percentage uncertainty, evaluation, and suggested improvements. Use clear subheadings and ensure all quantities have units.

    11. Common Mistakes in A2 Experimental Work | A2 实验常见误区

One frequent error is confusing accuracy with precision. An accurate experiment gives results close to the true value; a precise experiment gives a small spread of results. You can have high precision but poor accuracy if a systematic error is present. Always address both in your evaluation.

Students often quote too many significant figures in final results, or fail to align decimal places in table columns. Another pitfall is omitting units from graph axes and calculations. Also, do not claim ‘human error’ without specifying what it is – e.g. ‘random error in starting and stopping the stopwatch due to reaction time’ is acceptable.

    12. Exam Tips for Practical Written Papers |

Read the investigation context carefully; often the question provides a key equation or a table of results that you must use. Underline the variables you need to plot and the graph you must draw. For a linearisation question, write out the y = mx + c form explicitly before plotting points.

When asked to calculate uncertainty in a gradient, show the working for both maximum and minimum gradients, not just the final uncertainty. If you are short of time, always sketch the shape of the expected graph even if you cannot plot exact points. Use a sharp pencil, draw error bars where instructed, and label axes with quantity and unit separated by a solidus, e.g. ‘T² / s²’.

Practice with specimen papers from the 9630 syllabus and familiarise yourself with the mark scheme. Many marks are awarded for the process, not just the final numeric answer. Demonstrating clear logical steps will maximise your score.

📚 AS Physics: Understanding the Unit 1 Formula Sheet (June 2019) | AS 物理:理解单元1 公式表 (2019年6月)

The June 2019 AS Unit 1 Physics data sheet provides a concise reference of essential formulae, constants and relationships that span mechanics, materials, waves and quantum phenomena. Mastering this sheet is not just about memorising symbols — it is about understanding when and how to apply each equation in problem-solving contexts. This article breaks down the key concepts behind every group of equations, enabling you to use the data sheet as a powerful tool in your revision and examinations.

    1. Navigating the Data Sheet Layout |

The data sheet is grouped by topic, often starting with mechanics, moving through materials, waves and finally quantum phenomena. Recognising these clusters saves time in exams, as you can quickly locate the right formula without second-guessing. Each section also includes diagrams that illustrate variable definitions, such as forces on a slope or wavefronts in refraction.

    数据手册按主题分组,通常从力学开始,依次覆盖材料、波,最后是量子现象。认识这些分类能节省考试时间,你可以迅速定位正确公式,无需反复确认。每个部分还配有示意图来说明变量定义,比如斜面上的受力或折射中的波阵面。

    2. Kinematic Equations of Motion | 运动学方程

    v = u + at

This equation calculates final velocity when initial velocity u, constant acceleration a and time t are known. It underpins any scenario with uniform acceleration, such as free-fall or a car accelerating along a straight road.

    该方程在已知初速度 u、恒定加速度 a 和时间 t 时计算末速度。它适用于所有匀加速场景,如自由落体或汽车沿直线加速行驶。

    s = ut + ½at²

Use this to find displacement s when the object starts with initial velocity u and moves under constant acceleration a for a time t. Be careful with the sign of a if the object is decelerating.

    当物体以初速度 u 开始运动,并在恒定加速度 a 下持续时间 t 时,用该式求位移 s。如果物体在减速,注意 a 的符号。

    v² = u² + 2as

Linking final velocity directly to displacement without involving time, this equation is perfect for problems where time is not given. It is often used in collision analysis or stopping-distance calculations.

    该式直接将末速度与位移联系起来而不涉及时间,非常适合未给出时间的题目,常用于碰撞分析或制动距离计算。

    s = ½(u + v)t

This formula expresses displacement as the average velocity multiplied by time. It is especially handy when acceleration is constant and the initial and final velocities are known.

    该公式将位移表示为平均速度乘以时间,当加速度恒定且已知初、末速度时特别实用。

    3. Newton’s Laws and Momentum | 牛顿定律与动量

    F = m a

Newton’s second law states that the resultant force acting on a body equals the product of its mass and acceleration. Always consider the vector nature of force and acceleration — both are in the same direction as the net force.

    牛顿第二定律指出作用于物体的合力等于其质量与加速度的乘积。始终牢记力与加速度的矢量性——两者都与合力的方向相同。

    p = m v

Linear momentum is defined as mass times velocity. It is a vector quantity, conserved in all collisions and explosions provided no external resultant force acts.

    线动量定义为质量乘以速度。它是矢量,只要没有外合力作用,在所有碰撞与爆炸中动量守恒。

    Δp = F Δt

The impulse-momentum theorem tells us that the change in momentum equals the average force multiplied by the time for which it acts. This explains the effectiveness of crumple zones and airbags in extending impact time and reducing force.

    冲量—动量定理表明动量的变化等于平均力乘以作用时间。这解释了为何汽车溃缩区与安全气囊通过延长撞击时间减小作用力。

    4. Work, Energy and Power | 功、能与功率

    W = F s cosθ

Work done is the product of the force component in the direction of motion and the displacement. When the force is perpendicular to motion (θ = 90°), no work is done — for example, the normal force on a horizontal surface.

    功等于力在位移方向上的分量乘以位移大小。当力与运动方向垂直时(θ = 90°),不做功——例如水平面上的法向力。

    Eₖ = ½ m v²

Kinetic energy depends on mass and the square of speed. Doubling the speed quadruples the kinetic energy, a fact critical in road safety discussions about braking distances.

    动能取决于质量与速度的平方。速度翻倍将使动能变为原来的四倍,这一关系在讨论制动距离的交通安全中至关重要。

    Eₚ = m g Δh

Gravitational potential energy gain or loss equals weight (mg) multiplied by the change in vertical height. Choose a consistent reference level to define Δh correctly.

    重力势能的增减等于重力 (mg) 乘以垂直高度的变化。选择一个一致的参考水平以正确定义 Δh。

    P = ΔW / Δt and P = F v

Power is the rate of energy transfer or work done. The second form, P = F v, applies when a constant force moves an object at a constant speed against resistive forces, such as driving a car at steady speed.

    功率是能量转换或做功的速率。第二个形式 P = F v 适用于恒力推动物体以恒定速度克服阻力的情形,比如汽车匀速行驶。

    5. Stress, Strain and the Young Modulus | 应力、应变与杨氏模量

    σ = F / A

Tensile or compressive stress is the force applied per unit cross-sectional area. It is measured in pascals (Pa). Understanding stress is essential for determining whether a material will deform or fracture under a given load.

    拉伸或压缩应力是单位横截面积上所施加的力,单位为帕斯卡 (Pa)。理解应力对于判断材料在给定载荷下是否会变形或断裂至关重要。

    ε = ΔL / L

Strain is the fractional extension — the ratio of the change in length to the original length. Being dimensionless, it directly indicates how much a material has stretched relative to its initial size.

    应变是长度变化的分数——即伸长量与原始长度之比。由于无量纲,它直接表示材料相对于初始尺寸的拉伸程度。

    E = σ / ε

The Young modulus measures the stiffness of a material within its elastic limit. A high Young modulus means the material resists deformation; it is a fundamental property used in selecting materials for construction and engineering.

    杨氏模量衡量材料在弹性极限内的刚度。高杨氏模量意味着材料抵抗形变的能力强;它是建筑与工程选材时用到的基本性质。

    F = k ΔL and Elastic potential energy = ½ F ΔL = ½ k (ΔL)²

Hooke’s law states that the extension is proportional to the applied force up to the limit of proportionality. The stored elastic energy is the area under the force–extension graph, which is a triangle for materials obeying Hooke’s law.

    胡克定律指出,在比例极限内伸长量与所施加的力成正比。储存的弹性能量等于力—伸长图下方的面积,对于遵守胡克定律的材料,该面积为三角形。

    6. Wave Properties: Speed and Refraction | 波的性质:波速与折射

    v = f λ

The wave speed equation links frequency, wavelength and speed. In vacuum, all electromagnetic waves travel at the same speed c. For sound and water waves, the speed depends on the medium’s properties.

n = sin i / sin r (or n₁ sin θ₁ = n₂ sin θ₂)

Snell’s law describes how a wavefront changes direction when crossing a boundary between two media of different optical densities. The refractive index n is the ratio of the sine of the angle of incidence to the sine of the angle of refraction; it can also be used to compare wave speeds in the two media.

📚 Electromagnetic Induction | IGCSE AQA Physics Revision |

Electromagnetic induction is the process where a voltage (and current if a complete circuit is present) is induced in a conductor when it experiences a changing magnetic field. This phenomenon is the foundation for generation of electrical power and operation of transformers, motors, and many other devices. In this article, we will explore the key concepts, laws, and applications of electromagnetic induction required for the IGCSE AQA Physics examination, with bilingual explanations to strengthen your understanding.

    1. What is Electromagnetic Induction? |

Electromagnetic induction occurs when there is relative motion between a conductor and a magnetic field, or when the magnetic field around a conductor changes. A voltage, known as induced electromotive force (emf), is generated across the ends of the conductor. If the conductor forms part of a complete circuit, an induced current flows.

A simple demonstration involves moving a bar magnet into and out of a coil of wire. The galvanometer connected to the coil shows a deflection, indicating the presence of an induced current. The direction of the current reverses when the magnet is pulled out.

In generators, coils rotate in a magnetic field; in transformers, an alternating current in one coil creates a changing magnetic field that links to another coil. Both are practical applications of electromagnetic induction.

    2. Faraday’s Law of Electromagnetic Induction |

Faraday’s law states that the induced emf in a circuit is directly proportional to the rate of change of magnetic flux linkage through the circuit. For a coil of N turns, the induced emf (ε) can be expressed as:

    ε ∝ N (ΔΦ/Δt)

where Φ is the magnetic flux, t is time, and ΔΦ/Δt is the rate of change of flux. A larger number of turns, a stronger magnet, or faster relative motion all increase the induced emf.

Flux linkage is the product of the magnetic flux and the number of turns. It is effectively the total flux passing through the coil. The unit of magnetic flux is the weber (Wb).

In the exam, you need to know that the induced emf can be increased by:

    • using a stronger magnetic field

    • moving the magnet or coil more quickly

    • increasing the number of turns on the coil

    • winding the coil around an iron core to concentrate the magnetic field

    3. Lenz’s Law and Direction of Induced Current |

Lenz’s law gives the direction of the induced current: the induced current flows in a direction such that its magnetic effect opposes the change that produced it. This is a consequence of the conservation of energy.

For example, when the north pole of a magnet approaches a coil, the induced current in the coil produces a north pole facing the magnet to repel it. When the north pole is withdrawn, the coil produces a south pole to attract the magnet back, thus opposing the change in flux.

To determine the direction, you can use the right‑hand grip rule or Fleming’s right‑hand rule for generators. Lenz’s law also explains why eddy currents produce damping effects.

A key exam point: if the change is an increase in magnetic flux, the induced current creates a field opposite to the applied field; if the change is a decrease, the induced current creates a field in the same direction as the applied field.

    4. Factors Affecting the Magnitude of Induced EMF |

The magnitude of the induced emf depends on several factors, all linked to the rate of change of magnetic flux linkage. Understanding these factors helps in designing more efficient generators and transformers.

    Experimental investigations show that:

    • The speed of relative motion: faster movement produces a greater rate of flux change and a larger emf.

    • The strength of the magnetic field: stronger magnets increase the flux density, hence the flux linkage change per unit time.

    • The number of turns of the coil: more turns multiply the flux linkage, boosting the induced emf.

    • The angle at which the coil cuts the magnetic field lines: maximum emf is induced when the conductor moves perpendicular to the field lines.

The use of a soft iron core intensifies the magnetic field through the coil, increasing the flux linkage without changing the current or speed.

In a graph of flux versus time, the induced emf corresponds to the negative gradient of the flux‑time graph. A steep slope means a large emf.

    5. Generators: AC and DC |

Generators convert mechanical energy into electrical energy using electromagnetic induction. A coil rotates in a magnetic field, inducing an alternating emf across its ends. The basic structure includes a coil (armature), magnets, slip rings or split‑ring commutator, and carbon brushes.

In an AC generator (alternator), the ends of the coil are connected to two separate slip rings, which rotate with the coil. Brushes maintain continuous contact, delivering alternating current to the external circuit.

The induced emf varies sinusoidally. The emf is maximum when the coil is horizontal (plane parallel to the magnetic field) because the rate of flux change is greatest. The emf is zero when the coil is vertical (plane perpendicular to the field) because the rate of flux change is momentarily zero.

A DC generator uses a split‑ring commutator instead of slip rings. The commutator reverses the coil connections every half turn, so the external current always flows in one direction, producing a rectified output.

    6. The Split‑Ring Commutator |

The split‑ring commutator is a mechanical rectifier in a DC generator. It consists of two separate halves of a ring, each connected to one end of the coil, and rotating with the coil. Carbon brushes press against the commutator segments.

As the coil rotates, each brush remains connected to the same side of the external circuit, but the commutator swaps which end of the coil is connected to which brush every half revolution. This ensures that the induced current in the external circuit always flows in the same direction.

In an AC generator, slip rings maintain the same coil‑brush connections, so the external current alternates. The commutator is what distinguishes a DC generator from an AC generator at the IGCSE level.

Be prepared to label a diagram and explain why the commutator reverses the connections. A common exam question asks you to predict the direction of current or to complete a graph of output voltage against time.

    7. Transformers: Structure and Working Principle |

A transformer changes the voltage of an alternating current supply. It consists of two coils, the primary and secondary, wound on a common soft iron core. The coils are electrically insulated from each other.

An alternating current in the primary coil produces a changing magnetic field. The soft iron core channels this changing magnetic flux to the secondary coil. According to Faraday’s law, this changing flux induces an alternating emf across the secondary coil.

The iron core is laminated (made of thin sheets insulated from each other) to reduce eddy current losses. The transformer works only with alternating current because a steady direct current would produce a constant flux, giving no induction in the secondary.

    8. The Transformer Equation |

For an ideal transformer (100% efficiency), the ratio of the voltages is equal to the ratio of the number of turns:

    Vₚ / Vₛ = Nₚ / Nₛ

where Vₚ and Vₛ are the primary and secondary voltages, and Nₚ and Nₛ are the number of turns on the primary and secondary coils respectively.

If the secondary has more turns than the primary (Nₛ > Nₚ), the transformer is a step‑up transformer, and the secondary voltage is higher. If Nₛ < Nₚ, it is a step‑down transformer, and the secondary voltage is lower.

For an ideal transformer, the power input equals power output: Vₚ × Iₚ = Vₛ × Iₛ. Hence, a step‑up transformer increases voltage but decreases current, and a step‑down transformer decreases voltage but increases current.

This equation is frequently tested; you should be able to calculate an unknown quantity given three others.

    9. Step‑up and Step‑down Transformers in Use |

Step‑up transformers are used in power stations to raise the voltage for long‑distance transmission. Higher voltage means lower current for the same power, which reduces heat losses (I²R losses) in the cables.

Step‑down transformers are used in substations to reduce the high transmission voltage to safer, usable levels for homes, industry, and offices. Typical domestic supplies are 230 V in many countries, stepped down from hundreds of kilovolts.

Transformers also appear in power adapters for electronic devices, battery chargers, and in microwave ovens to supply the magnetron with high voltage.

In all cases, the use of transformers greatly improves the efficiency of electricity distribution networks. The national grid relies on high‑voltage transmission and local step‑down transformers.

    10. Energy Losses in Transformers and How to Minimize Them | 变压器的能量损耗及减少方法

Real transformers are not 100% efficient. Energy losses arise from several sources, and understanding them is part of the IGCSE specification.

Eddy currents are loops of induced current flowing within the iron core. They produce heat and reduce efficiency. Laminating the core with thin, insulated layers significantly reduces eddy currents.

Resistance of the coils causes heating as current flows (copper losses). Using thick copper wire reduces the resistance and thus the heating.

Hysteresis losses occur because the core material’s magnetization lags behind the magnetising field when the direction of magnetisation is repeatedly reversed. Soft iron has a narrow hysteresis loop and is chosen to minimise this loss.

Some flux may ‘leak’ out of the core and not link both coils perfectly. Using a closed, well‑designed core shape (like a ring) improves flux linkage.

Exam questions often ask you to identify one method to improve efficiency and explain how it works. Lamination is the most common answer for eddy currents.

    11. Eddy Currents and Their Applications |

Eddy currents are circular electric currents induced in a conductor when it is exposed to a changing magnetic field. While they cause energy losses in transformers, they also have useful applications.

Electromagnetic braking uses strong magnets near a rotating metal disc. The eddy currents induced in the disc create a magnetic force that opposes the motion (Lenz’s law), providing smooth, contactless braking in trains and roller coasters.

Induction cookers use a rapidly changing magnetic field to induce eddy currents in the base of a metal pan, heating it directly without heating the hob surface.

Metal detectors and security gates use eddy current sensing: when a metal object passes through a varying magnetic field, eddy currents in the object alter the field, triggering an alarm.

At IGCSE, you need to describe eddy currents, explain how they are reduced (lamination) and give at least one useful application.

    📚 Nuclear Physics Key Points for WJEC A-Level | A-Level WJEC

Nuclear physics is a fascinating topic in WJEC A-Level Physics that covers the structure of the nucleus, radioactivity, and the powerful processes of fission and fusion. Understanding these concepts not only helps in exams but also reveals the principles behind nuclear energy and medical imaging. This article breaks down the essential topics, formulas, and common exam pitfalls to boost your revision.

    1. Atomic Nucleus & Nuclide Notation |

The atomic nucleus consists of protons and neutrons, collectively called nucleons. The number of protons Z determines the element, while the total number of nucleons A = Z + N (where N is the neutron number) gives the mass number. Nuclides are represented as ᵘzX, e.g. ²³⁸₉₂U for uranium-238. In WJEC questions, you may be given a table of particles and asked to deduce unknown species in decay equations. Remember, in nuclide notation the bottom number is proton number and the top is mass number.

The notation ¹₂H represents deuterium, an isotope of hydrogen with one neutron. To determine the neutron number, simply subtract Z from A: N = A – Z.

要计算中子数,只需用A减去Z:N = A – Z。

    2. Isotopes and Nuclear Forces |

Isotopes are atoms of the same element with the same proton number but different neutron numbers. They have identical chemical properties but different nuclear stabilities. For instance, carbon-12 (¹²₆C) and carbon-14 (¹⁴₆C) are isotopes.

The strong nuclear force binds nucleons together, overcoming the electrostatic repulsion between protons. It is a short-range force, effective only up to a few femtometres, and is independent of charge. This force explains why nuclei with more than one proton can remain stable.

    3. Mass Defect and Binding Energy |

When nucleons come together to form a nucleus, the total mass of the nucleus is slightly less than the sum of the masses of its individual nucleons. This difference is called the mass defect (Δm). The binding energy is the energy equivalent of this mass loss, calculated using Einstein’s equation E = Δm c². It represents the work needed to separate a nucleus into its constituent nucleons.

Binding energy per nucleon is a measure of nuclear stability; the higher the binding energy per nucleon, the more stable the nucleus. The curve of binding energy per nucleon against mass number peaks around iron-56, explaining why energy is released in both fission of heavy elements and fusion of light ones.

    4. Einstein’s Mass–Energy Equivalence |

The equation E = mc² shows that mass and energy are interchangeable. In nuclear processes, a tiny amount of mass can be converted into a huge amount of energy. This principle underlies the energy release in fission and fusion.

    1 u = 1.66 × 10²⁷ kg = 931.5 MeV/c²

This conversion factor is essential for energy calculations: if the mass defect is known in atomic mass units, simply multiply by 931.5 to obtain the energy in MeV.

    5. Radioactive Decay: Types and Properties |

Alpha decay involves the emission of a helium nucleus (⁴₂He), which reduces the mass number by 4 and the proton number by 2. Alpha particles are highly ionising but have low penetration, being stopped by paper or a few cm of air.

In beta-minus (β¹) decay, a neutron turns into a proton, emitting an electron (⁰₁₋e) and an anti-electron-neutrino (ν̅₁). The mass number remains unchanged, but the proton number increases by 1.

Beta-plus (β⁺) decay involves a proton converting into a neutron, emitting a positron (⁰₁&e) and an electron-neutrino (ν₁). The daughter nucleus has the same mass number but a proton number decreased by 1.

Gamma (γ) decay is the emission of high-energy electromagnetic radiation, usually after alpha or beta decay, allowing the nucleus to release excess energy without changing A or Z.

    6. Decay Equations and Conservation Laws |

In any nuclear decay, the total mass number and total proton number are conserved. For example, uranium-238 alpha decay is written as:

    ²³⁸₉₂U → ²³⁴₉₀Th + ⁴₂He

    For beta-minus decay of carbon-14:

    ¹⁴₆C → ¹⁴₇N + ⁰₁₋e + ν̅₁

Conservation of charge is also observed: the total charge before and after must be the same. Likewise, energy and momentum are conserved, which is why the neutrino was originally postulated to account for the continuous energy spectrum of beta particles.

    7. Activity and the Decay Constant |

The activity (A) of a radioactive source is the number of decays per second. It is proportional to the number of undecayed radioactive nuclei (N), given by:

    放射源的活度(A)是每秒衰变次数。它与未衰变放射性核的数量(N)成正比,关系式为:

    A = λ N

Activity is measured in becquerels (Bq), where 1 Bq = 1 decay per second. The decay constant λ (s¹) is the probability of a nucleus decaying per unit time. A larger λ means a more active source and a shorter half-life.

    8. Exponential Decay Law and Half-life | 指数衰变与半衰期

Radioactive decay follows an exponential law:

    放射性衰变遵循指数规律:

    N = N₀ e–λt    and    A = A₀ e–λt

The half-life T₁⁄₂ is the time taken for half the nuclei to decay, or for the activity to halve. It is related to the decay constant by:

    T₁⁄₂ = ln 2 / λ ≈ 0.693 / λ

For example, if a sample of iodine-131 has an initial activity of 800 Bq and a half-life of 8 days, after 24 days its activity will be 800 × (½)³ = 100 Bq. In WJEC exams, you may need to read half-lives from graphs or solve for time using the exponential equation.

Both the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme Physics and the AQA A‐level Physics qualification are highly regarded pre‐university courses that develop deep conceptual understanding and analytical skills. While they share many fundamental principles of classical and modern physics, the structure, assessment methods, and depth of certain topics differ significantly. This article systematically compares key knowledge areas across both syllabuses to help students and teachers identify overlaps, differences, and the unique demands of each programme.

    1. Course Structure and Assessment |

IB Physics (Higher Level) requires students to study a core syllabus, an Additional Higher Level (AHL) component, and one optional topic. A major emphasis is placed on the Internal Assessment (IA), an individual scientific investigation. External exams consist of three papers, including multiple‐choice, structured questions, and data‐based problems. The final grade includes 20% from the IA.

AQA A‐level Physics is a linear qualification examined entirely at the end of a two‐year course. It is divided into AS and A‐level content, with core topics and an optional topic (for example, Astrophysics, Medical Physics, or Engineering Physics). Practical skills are assessed through a separate endorsement and 15% of the written exam marks are based on practical knowledge. There is no individual coursework investigation like the IB IA.

    2. Mechanics and Kinematics |

Both courses cover kinematics (suvat equations, projectile motion), Newton’s laws, momentum, work, energy, power, and circular motion. IB HL adds concepts of angular velocity, centripetal acceleration, and rigid body rotational dynamics in the AHL topics, while AQA treats circular motion within its core A‐level content under further mechanics, including angular speed and centripetal force, but does not extend to full rigid body torque and moment of inertia calculations.

In both syllabuses, conservation of momentum and types of collisions (elastic and inelastic) are examined with a quantitative approach. IB often requires students to derive expressions, such as the impact force from momentum change, whereas AQA tends to present more structured questions with clear application scenarios.

    3. Thermal Physics and Gases |

IB Physics introduces specific heat capacity, latent heat, kinetic theory, and the ideal gas model. Higher Level students must derive the pressure of an ideal gas using molecular velocity and momentum arguments, and they explore the first law of thermodynamics in detail, including isothermal, adiabatic, isochoric, and isobaric processes. The concept of entropy is covered qualitatively.

AQA A‐level covers thermal properties, ideal gases, and the absolute temperature scale. The molecular kinetic theory model is used to understand temperature and gas pressure, but the detailed derivation of pressure is often more guided. The first law of thermodynamics and thermodynamic processes are included, with an emphasis on p–V diagrams. Entropy is not part of the core AQA specification.

    4. Waves and Optics |

Both curricula address wave properties (reflection, refraction, diffraction, interference, polarization), superposition, standing waves, and the Doppler effect. IB HL includes more rigorous treatment of single‐slit and double‐slit interference, resolution, and the Rayleigh criterion. IB also covers thin film interference and the use of Young’s double‐slit to measure wavelength in the practical programme.

AQA covers interference and diffraction patterns, coherent sources, and standing waves on strings and in pipes. The Rayleigh criterion for resolution is not explicitly required; instead, the focus is on understanding how path difference leads to constructive or destructive interference. The Doppler effect is discussed for sound and electromagnetic waves but is more qualitative compared to the IB.

    5. Electricity and Circuits |

Standard content includes Ohm’s law, resistance, resistivity, electromotive force, internal resistance, and potential dividers. IB HL requires the use of Kirchhoff’s circuit laws for complex multi‐loop circuits, including the calculation of currents and voltages using simultaneous equations. Sensor circuits and LDR/thermistor applications are common in both.

AQA also covers potential dividers with sensors and explains how to calculate internal resistance from terminal potential difference. It uses Kirchhoff’s laws, but the problems are often less mathematically demanding than those encountered in IB Paper 1 or 2. AQA integrates practical investigations into resistivity and internal resistance as part of required practicals.

    6. Electromagnetism and Induction |

Both specifications cover electric and magnetic fields, forces on moving charges, and electromagnetic induction. IB HL explores the force on a current‐carrying conductor in detail and includes the Hall effect for charge carrier determination. Magnetic flux, flux linkage, Faraday’s law, and Lenz’s law are essential in both; IB frequently expects students to derive an expression for induced emf in a rotating coil.

AQA thoroughly addresses electromagnetic induction, transformers, and the operation of alternators in the core A‐level content. The Hall effect is not a required topic. There is a strong focus on Faraday’s and Lenz’s laws with applications to power generation, whereas IB also links induction to relativity of electric and magnetic fields in the particle physics option.

    7. Quantum and Nuclear Physics |

The photoelectric effect, atomic spectra, energy levels, and the Bohr model appear in both courses. IB HL demands a deeper quantum understanding, including the de Broglie wavelength, Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle, and the wave function interpretation (qualitative). Nuclear physics content covers radioactive decay, binding energy, mass defect, and nuclear reactions; IB includes neutrino types and the standard model in its particle physics option.

AQA covers the photoelectric effect and the determination of Planck’s constant, along with atomic line spectra. The de Broglie hypothesis is mentioned as wave‐particle duality but not expanded into uncertainty relations. In nuclear physics, AQA includes nuclear decay, half‐life, nuclear energy, fission, and fusion. The standard model and detailed particle classification lie within the optional Turning Points in Physics topic.

    8. Optional Topics and Modern Physics |

IB Physics offers four optional topics, from which the school usually selects one: Relativity, Engineering Physics, Imaging, or Astrophysics. Each option adds substantial depth in a specialized area. AQA also requires one optional module, with choices including Astrophysics, Medical Physics, Engineering Physics, Turning Points in Physics, and Electronics. This structure allows both programmes to tailor content to student interests, but IB options tend to be more conceptually demanding and self‐contained.

In the IB Astrophysics option, for example, students study stellar evolution, Hubble’s law, and cosmological distances, whereas AQA Astrophysics covers telescopes, stellar classification, and the Big Bang theory with less emphasis on general relativity. IB’s Relativity option introduces time dilation, length contraction, and mass‐energy equivalence in a mathematically rigorous manner not found in standard AQA core material.

    9. Practical Skills and Internal Assessment |

A distinctive feature of IB Physics is the Internal Assessment, a 10‐hour investigation where students design, carry out, and evaluate an experiment, composing a comprehensive report. This develops authentic inquiry skills and carries significant weight. AQA assesses practical competencies via 12 required practical activities, and students demonstrate their skills in a separate Practical Endorsement. Question papers include questions that test understanding of experimental methodology and analysis.

Both curricula demand that students can collect and process data, estimate uncertainties, and draw valid conclusions. IB emphasizes error propagation, percentage difference, and the evaluation of systematic versus random errors more explicitly in the IA marking criteria, while AQA integrates these skills through regular exam questions and the practical endorsement.

    10. Mathematical Requirements |

Mathematics is integral to both physics courses. IB HL Physics assumes a concurrent mathematics course at Standard or Higher Level; it frequently uses calculus for deriving equations, analyzing rates of change in mechanics, and solving differential equations in simple harmonic motion and RC circuits. Students are expected to manipulate logarithms, exponentials, and trigonometric functions fluently.

AQA A‐level Physics has a slightly less intensive calculus requirement. While differentiation and integration are introduced and applied to motion with non‐uniform acceleration or capacitor discharge, many derivations rely on algebraic methods. Data handling with significant figures, graphs, and interpretation of logarithmic plots are thoroughly tested. Both programmes require standard mathematical skills such as vector resolution and using sine/cosine rules.

    AQA A‐level

    11. Summary and Which One Suits You?

IB Physics offers a broader, enquiry‐driven curriculum that assesses students through written examinations, an internal investigation, and interdisciplinary links. It rewards conceptual depth, independent research, and international‐mindedness. AQA A‐level Physics provides a linear, exam‐focused route with a strong grounding in practical techniques, making it ideal for students who thrive on end‐point assessments and a structured approach to lab skills.

When choosing, consider your academic goals, learning style, and university aspirations. Both qualifications are excellent preparation for engineering, physics, and related degrees worldwide.

This specification requires learners to develop practical competence through a series of required activities and to demonstrate analytical and evaluative skills in written examinations. Whether you are designing an investigation, collecting data, or assessing the validity of measurements, a structured approach to experimental work will deepen your understanding and boost your examination performance. This article explores the key aspects of experimental investigations as outlined in the OxfordAQA International AS and A-level Physics specification, providing clear guidance for both students and educators.

    1. Understanding the Purpose of Practical Work | 理解实验工作的目的

Practical work in OxfordAQA International A-level Physics serves multiple purposes: it reinforces theoretical knowledge, develops investigative skills, and fosters scientific thinking. The specification identifies a set of required practical activities that integrate specific techniques and apparatus. Through these, learners gain experience in making accurate observations, handling equipment safely, and analyzing results critically.

Moreover, practical work is not assessed solely through a separate practical exam; instead, questions in the written papers will test understanding of experimental methods, data analysis, and evaluation. Thus, every investigation you carry out contributes directly to your ability to tackle these questions confidently.

    2. Planning and Designing Investigations |

A well-planned investigation begins with a clear hypothesis or research question derived from a physical principle. You must identify independent, dependent, and control variables. In OxfordAQA experiments, for instance, when investigating the relationship between the extension of a spring and applied force, the independent variable is the mass added, and the dependent variable is the extension. Key control variables include the spring constant and ambient temperature.

You should select appropriate apparatus with the sensitivity and range required to collect reliable data. A diagram of the experimental setup is essential, and you must address any risks by carrying out a risk assessment. The specification emphasizes the ability to modify methods to improve accuracy or to overcome practical difficulties encountered during preliminary work.

    3. Measurement Techniques and Instrumentation |

Accurate measurement underpins all reliable experimental data. In OxfordAQA International Physics, you will use instruments such as micrometers, vernier calipers, digital multimeters, oscilloscopes, and light gates. Understanding how to read analogue scales with parallax avoidance and how to judge the limit of reading is fundamental. For digital instruments, the resolution is given by the smallest increment, while for analogue devices you need to consider half the smallest division or a reasonable estimate of uncertainty.

Repeated measurements are the backbone of reducing random errors. Whenever possible, take at least three readings and calculate a mean value. The specification expects you to identify and distinguish between systematic errors (e.g., zero error on a micrometer) and random errors (e.g., fluctuations in a stopwatch reaction time). Techniques such as using a set square to ensure perpendicular alignment or allowing equipment to stabilize before taking readings can significantly enhance data quality.

    4. Uncertainties and Error Analysis |

Every measurement carries an uncertainty. The standard format in OxfordAQA is to express a measurement as value ± uncertainty using appropriate SI units. For a single reading, the absolute uncertainty might be half the instrument’s resolution. For repeated readings, the uncertainty can be the half-range (½ × (max − min)) or the standard deviation if data sets are larger. When combining quantities, you must propagate uncertainties correctly.

    For addition/subtraction: ΔR = Δa + Δb
    For multiplication/division: ΔR/R = Δa/a + Δb/b

    对于乘除运算:ΔR/R = Δa/a + Δb/b

Percentage uncertainty is often more revealing, as it links the size of the absolute uncertainty to the measured value. You will be expected to compare percentage uncertainties from different instruments to decide which contributes most to the overall error, and then to suggest improvements such as using a more sensitive device or increasing the quantity being measured (e.g., timing multiple oscillations instead of one).

    5. Recording and Organizing Data |

Data should be recorded in an orderly table with appropriate headings that include both the quantity and its unit, separated by a solidus or brackets. For example, a column heading could be t / s or t (s). The second method is recommended in OxfordAQA to avoid algebraic ambiguity. All raw readings, including repeated values and calculated means, must be clearly presented with the same number of decimal places consistent with the instrument’s precision.

Significant figures play a critical role. The number of significant figures in a result should reflect the precision of the input data. In general, calculated quantities should not be given to more significant figures than the least precise measurement used. By mastering data presentation, you demonstrate the ability to communicate scientific information effectively, a key assessment objective in the specification.

    6. Graphical Methods and Interpretation |

Graphs allow you to extract mathematical relationships and identify anomalies. In OxfordAQA practical work, you must choose scales that use at least half of the grid in both directions, label axes with quantities and units, and plot points with small, neat crosses or encircled dots. A line of best fit, either straight or curved, should be drawn to pass through as many points as possible, with an even spread of points above and below the line.

The gradient and intercept often carry physical meaning. For instance, in a graph of current versus voltage for a fixed resistor, the gradient gives the conductance (1/R). To determine uncertainty in a gradient, draw the steepest and shallowest plausible lines (worst-acceptable lines) that still fit the data. The difference between these extreme gradients and the best-fit gradient provides an estimate of uncertainty.

    gradient uncertainty = ± (|mmax − mmin|) / 2

    7. Data Processing and Calculations |

Once you have collected raw data, processing it into meaningful results requires careful arithmetic. Use scientific notation for very large or very small numbers, and keep track of units throughout calculations. The OxfordAQA specification often asks you to combine equations with experimental data, e.g., using s = ut + ½ at² to determine the acceleration due to gravity from a free-fall experiment. Correct substitution and rearrangement are essential skills.

Pay close attention to anomalous results. You should be able to identify a data point that deviates significantly from the trend and decide whether to exclude it from analysis. Justification might refer to a procedural error or an unaccounted variable. When you exclude a point, you must still plot it on the graph and clearly label it as anomalous or circle it, so the examiner can see your judgement.

    8. Evaluation and Critical Thinking |

Evaluation is a higher-order skill that distinguishes top-performing students. After obtaining results, you must assess the reliability and validity of the investigation. Discuss whether systematic errors were minimized (e.g., by checking zero errors) and whether the percentage uncertainty was acceptable. In OxfordAQA examinations, you might be asked to comment on the precision of measurements and the accuracy of the final outcome.

Consider the limitations of the procedure. For example, in a experiment on Young’s modulus, friction at the pulley or a non-uniform wire may introduce error. Suggest specific improvements that would address these limitations, such as using frictionless bearings or a longer wire to reduce the relative effect of kinks. The specification rewards realistic, well-explained modifications rather than generic statements like “use better equipment.”

    9. Common Required Practicals in OxfordAQA | OxfordAQA

The OxfordAQA International A-level Physics specification includes a defined set of required practicals. While the exact list may be found in the official specification, typical examples are: determination of the acceleration of free fall using a trapdoor and electromagnet or light gates; investigation of Newton’s second law using a dynamics trolley and light gates; measurement of the resistivity of a wire; determination of the internal resistance of a cell; investigation of interference and diffraction using lasers and double slits; and study of capacitor charging and discharging curves.

For each required practical, you should be able to recall the apparatus, the main steps, the sources of error, and how to process the data. Practice writing concise methods and drawing appropriate diagrams. Additionally, linking the practical to the theory is crucial—for example, explaining how the time constant is obtained from a discharge curve and why a log-linear graph might be used to improve analysis.

    10. Mathematical Skills in Practical Contexts |

Experimental physics draws heavily on mathematics. You must be comfortable with rearranging formulas, converting units, and applying logarithmic and exponential functions when dealing with decay processes or damped oscillations. The specification requires you to use calculators to find standard deviation (σ) for a set of repeated measurements, usually the sample standard deviation, and to interpret the result in terms of spread.

You should also be able to linearize non-linear relationships. For instance, if a physical law follows T = k √l, plotting T² against l yields a straight line whose gradient can be used to determine k². Skill in transforming data enables you to test theoretical models and to extract constants with greater precision.

    11. Exam Techniques for Practical-Based Questions |

OxfordAQA written papers include structured questions that probe your experimental understanding. When faced with a question about an unfamiliar experiment, apply the same logical framework: identify variables, consider instruments and their resolution, suggest a procedure step by step, and anticipate how you would handle errors. Pay attention to command words: “describe” requires a step-by-step account, “explain” needs scientific reasoning, and “evaluate” demands a balanced judgement with evidence.

In calculations, show your working clearly, and final answers should be given to an appropriate number of significant figures with the correct unit. If a question provides uncertainties, use them to comment on the agreement between your derived value and a known standard—check if the difference is less than the combined uncertainty. This is a skill frequently assessed in the evaluation of results.

    12. Safety and Ethical Considerations |

Safety is non-negotiable in any laboratory setting. The OxfordAQA specification expects you to be aware of common hazards: hot surfaces, sharp objects, electrical shocks, lasers, and radioactive sources. You should know how to mitigate these risks by tying back long hair, wearing goggles, using low voltages, or following CLEAPSS or local safety guidelines. In assessments, you may be asked to identify hazards in a given setup and propose control measures.

Ethical issues, though less frequent in physics, can arise when experiments involve human participants (e.g., reaction time tests) or environmental considerations. Always treat data honestly, and in group work, contribute fairly. Practical work is a cooperative enterprise that reflects the collegiate nature of scientific research, and the specification encourages collaborative skills alongside individual accountability.

  • Edexcel Physics: Magnetic Fields Key Points | Edexcel

📚 Edexcel Physics: Magnetic Fields Key Points | Edexcel

Magnetic fields form a core part of the Edexcel A Level Physics specification, bringing together concepts of force, motion, and electromagnetic induction. This article distils the key points you need to master for the exam, from magnetic flux density to transformers, with clear explanations and worked examples.

    1. Magnetic Fields and Field Lines |

A magnetic field is a region of space where a moving charge or a magnetic material experiences a force. Field lines show the direction a north pole would move: they go from north to south outside a magnet, and south to north inside.

Field lines never cross. The closer the lines, the stronger the magnetic field. A uniform magnetic field is represented by equally spaced parallel lines, such as between two opposite poles of a horseshoe magnet or inside a solenoid.

Magnetic flux density, symbol B, is a measure of the strength of a magnetic field. It is defined by the force on a conductor carrying a unit current at right angles to the field. The SI unit is the tesla (T), equivalent to N A⁻¹ m⁻¹.

1 T is a strong field; Earth’s magnetic field is about 50 µT. In exam questions, B may be constant (uniform field) or vary with position. Always check the direction of B relative to the current or velocity.

    3. Force on a Current-Carrying Conductor | 载流导体受力 (F = BIL sin θ)

A conductor of length L carrying current I in a magnetic field B experiences a magnetic force. The magnitude is given by

    长度为 L 的载流导体在磁场 B 中会受到磁力。其大小公式为

    F = B I L sin θ

where θ is the angle between the direction of current and the magnetic field lines. Maximum force occurs when the conductor is perpendicular to the field (θ = 90°, sin θ = 1).

The direction of the force is given by Fleming’s left-hand rule: thumb – force (motion), forefinger – field (N to S), second finger – current (+ to -). This rule applies to conventional current.

    4. Force on a Moving Charge | 运动电荷受力 (F = qvB sin θ)

For a single charged particle moving with velocity v in a magnetic field B, the force is

    对于以速度 v 在磁场 B 中运动的单个带电粒子,受到的力为

    F = q v B sin θ

where q is the charge and θ is the angle between v and B. The force is always perpendicular to both v and B, so it does no work and cannot change the particle’s speed, only its direction.

This relationship explains why a charged particle entering a uniform magnetic field at right angles will follow a circular path. The magnetic force provides the centripetal force:

    这解释了为何带电粒子垂直进入均匀磁场后会做圆周运动。磁力提供向心力:

    qvB = mv² / r

giving the radius of curvature r = mv / (qB). This is used in mass spectrometers and particle accelerators.

    5. Charged Particles in Magnetic Fields |

When the velocity is not perpendicular to the field, the particle follows a helical path. The component of velocity parallel to B remains constant, while the perpendicular component causes circular motion.

In a velocity selector, crossed electric and magnetic fields are used. The particle travels undeflected when the electric force equals the magnetic force: qE = qvB, so v = E / B. This selects particles of a specific velocity regardless of their mass or charge.

    6. Electromagnetic Induction |

Electromagnetic induction is the generation of an e.m.f. (electromotive force) when the magnetic flux through a circuit changes. This can be achieved by moving a magnet near a coil, moving a coil in a magnetic field, or changing the current in an adjacent coil.

Induced e.m.f. is a result of the magnetic force on free electrons in the conductor. The direction of the induced current is such that it opposes the change causing it (Lenz’s law). The magnitude depends on the rate of change of magnetic flux linkage.

    7. Faraday’s Law and Lenz’s Law |

Faraday’s law states that the magnitude of the induced e.m.f. is proportional to the rate of change of magnetic flux linkage:

    法拉第定律指出,感应电动势的大小正比于磁链的变化率:

    ε = -N (ΔΦ / Δt)

where ε is the e.m.f. (V), N is the number of turns, and ΔΦ/Δt is the rate of change of flux per turn (Wb s⁻¹). The negative sign represents Lenz’s law.

Lenz’s law: the direction of the induced current is such that it creates a magnetic field opposing the change in flux. This is a consequence of conservation of energy. If the induced current aided the change, energy would be created from nothing.

    8. Magnetic Flux and Flux Linkage |

Magnetic flux Φ through a surface is defined as

    穿过某一表面的磁通量 Φ 定义为

    Φ = B A cos θ

where A is the area of the surface, B is the magnetic flux density, and θ is the angle between the normal to the surface and the magnetic field lines. Unit: weber (Wb). 1 Wb = 1 T m².

1 Wb = 1 T·m²。

Magnetic flux linkage NΦ is the product of the number of turns N and the flux per turn. This is the key quantity in Faraday’s law. A change in flux linkage, not just flux, induces e.m.f. in a coil.

    9. Generators and Alternating Current |

An a.c. generator (alternator) uses a coil rotating in a uniform magnetic field. The flux linkage varies sinusoidally, inducing an alternating e.m.f.:

    交流发电机利用线圈在均匀磁场中旋转。磁链呈正弦变化,产生交变电动势:

    ε = ε₀ sin(ωt)

where ε₀ = BANω, A is the coil area, N is turns, and ω is angular velocity. This e.m.f. drives a current that alternates direction every half-cycle.

    The peak voltage and r.m.s. voltage are related by Vr.m.s. = V₀ / √2. Oscilloscope traces show the sinusoidal waveform. The period T = 2π / ω and frequency f = 1 / T.

    10. Transformers | 变压器

A transformer changes the magnitude of an alternating voltage. It consists of two coils (primary and secondary) wound on a soft iron core. An alternating current in the primary produces a changing magnetic flux in the core, which links the secondary coil and induces an e.m.f.

For an ideal transformer (100% efficiency, no flux leakage), the voltage ratio equals the turns ratio:

    Vs / Vp = Ns / Np

And the power is conserved: Vp Ip = Vs Is. A step-up transformer increases voltage and decreases current; a step-down transformer does the opposite, used for efficient power transmission.

    并且功率守恒:Vp Ip = Vs Is。

  • A-Level Physics: Deriving Centripetal Acceleration (From June 2018 Paper 3 Mark Scheme) | A-Level

    📚 A-Level Physics: Deriving Centripetal Acceleration (From June 2018 Paper 3 Mark Scheme) | A-Level

In A-Level Physics, centripetal acceleration is a foundational concept that explains why an object moving in a circle experiences continuous acceleration towards the centre, even when moving at constant speed. The derivation of a = v²/r is frequently examined, and the June 2018 Paper 3 mark scheme provides an ideal template for how examiners award marks for logical rigor and vector reasoning. This article breaks down the derivation step by step, mirrors the scoring points from that mark scheme, and equips you with the knowledge to reproduce it confidently under exam conditions.

    1. Circular Motion Fundamentals |

Uniform circular motion describes an object travelling at constant speed v along a circular path of radius r. The time taken for one complete revolution is the period T, and the frequency f = 1/T. Although the speed is constant, the direction of the velocity vector changes each instant. According to Newton’s first law, any change in velocity (either in magnitude or direction) requires an acceleration. That acceleration is directed radially inward and is known as centripetal acceleration.

To derive the magnitude of this acceleration, we must consider how the velocity vector changes over a very small time interval Δt. This is where vector subtraction and geometry come together.

    2. Visualising the Change in Velocity |

Imagine an object moving from point A to point B on the circle, sweeping out a small angle Δθ. The velocity at A, vA, is tangent to the circle at A; the velocity at B, vB, is tangent at B. Both have magnitude v but differ in direction. To find the change in velocity Δv, place the two vectors tail-to-tail: Δv is the vector connecting the tip of vA to the tip of vB. This forms an isosceles triangle with two sides of length v and a base Δv.

The angle between vA and vB is also Δθ because each velocity is perpendicular to its corresponding radius, so the angle between the radii equals the angle between the tangents. This geometric relationship is crucial for the next step.

    3. Geometry of the Vector Triangle |

When Δt is extremely small, the angle Δθ becomes very small. In this limit, the chord length AB (straight-line distance) approximates the arc length Δs along the circle. The triangle formed by the two radii and the chord (with sides r, r, and chord length) is similar to the velocity triangle (with sides v, v, and Δv). This similarity arises because both are isosceles triangles with the same small angle Δθ at the apex.

From the similarity, we can write the ratio of corresponding sides:

    Δv / v ≈ chord / r

For a very small Δθ, the chord length is essentially equal to the arc length Δs. Thus, we approximate:

    Δv / v ≈ Δs / r

    Δv / v ≈ Δs / r

    4. Relating Arc Length and Time | 弧长与时间的联系

The distance travelled along the arc is directly related to the constant speed: Δs = v Δt. Substituting this into the approximate ratio gives:

    Δv / v ≈ (v Δt) / r

    Δv / v ≈ (v Δt) / r

Rearranging the terms, we obtain an expression for the rate of change of velocity:

    Δv / Δt ≈ v² / r

    Δv / Δt ≈ v² / r

Instantaneous acceleration is defined as the limit of Δv/Δt as Δt approaches zero. In this limit, all the approximations become exact, yielding the centripetal acceleration:

    a = v² / r

    瞬时加速度定义为当Δt趋近于零时Δv/Δt的极限。在极限情况下,所有近似均变为精确,从而得出向心加速度:

    a = v² / r

    5. Expressing Acceleration in Terms of Angular Speed | 用角速度表示加速度

Angular speed ω is defined as the rate of change of the angle swept: ω = Δθ/Δt. Since the linear speed v is related to angular speed by v = ωr, we can substitute this into the centripetal acceleration formula:

    a = (ωr)² / r = ω² r

    角速度ω定义为扫过角度的变化率:ω = Δθ/Δt。由于线速度v与角速度满足v = ωr,将其代入向心加速度公式:

    a = (ωr)² / r = ω² r

This alternative form is especially practical when dealing with problems stated in terms of period T (where ω = 2π / T) or frequency f (ω = 2πf). For example, a disc rotating at a constant angular speed has a centripetal acceleration that increases linearly with radius.

    这一替代形式在处理以周期T(ω = 2π / T)或频率f(ω = 2πf)表述的问题时尤为实用。

    6. Centripetal Force from Newton’s Second Law |

According to Newton’s second law, the net force acting on an object is F = m a. Therefore, the centripetal force required to keep an object in circular motion is:

📚 IGCSE Edexcel Physics: Waves Key Points | IGCSE Edexcel

Waves are fundamental in physics, transferring energy from one place to another without transferring matter. In the IGCSE Edexcel specification, waves cover topics such as wave properties, light, sound, and the electromagnetic spectrum. This article summarises the key concepts, equations, and exam tips to help you master the topic.

    1. Types of Waves: Transverse vs Longitudinal |

Transverse waves are waves where the particles of the medium vibrate perpendicular to the direction of energy transfer. Examples include all electromagnetic waves, ripples on water, and S-waves (secondary seismic waves). The peaks and troughs are characteristic features.

Longitudinal waves are waves where particles vibrate parallel to the direction of energy transfer. Sound waves in air and P-waves (primary seismic waves) are longitudinal. They consist of compressions and rarefactions.

    2. Describing Waves: Amplitude, Wavelength, Frequency, Speed |

The amplitude of a wave is the maximum displacement of a particle from its rest position. In transverse waves, it is the height of a crest or depth of a trough from the equilibrium line. Amplitude relates to the energy carried by the wave; larger amplitude means more energy.

Wavelength (λ) is the distance between two consecutive corresponding points on a wave, e.g., crest to crest or compression to compression. It is measured in metres (m).

Frequency (f) is the number of complete waves passing a point per second. It is measured in hertz (Hz). Period (T) is the time taken for one complete wave to pass a point; T = 1/f.

Wave speed (v) is the speed at which the wave energy travels. In a given medium, it is constant for a particular wave type.

    3. The Wave Equation (v = fλ) | 波动方程 (v = fλ)

The wave equation is the core mathematical relationship for waves: v = f × λ. It relates wave speed (v, in m/s), frequency (f, in Hz), and wavelength (λ, in m).

    v = f × λ

    波动方程是波的核心数学关系:v = f × λ。它联系了波速(v,单位 m/s)、频率(f,单位 Hz)和波长(λ,单位 m)。

When waves travel from one medium into another, their frequency remains unchanged, but speed and wavelength change proportionally. For electromagnetic waves, v = c = 3.0 × 10⁸ m/s in vacuum.

You can also use the frequency-period relation: f = 1/T and T = 1/f. Make sure you can rearrange these equations confidently for calculations.

    4. Reflection and Refraction |

Reflection occurs when waves bounce off a surface. The law of reflection states that the angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection, both measured from the normal. Smooth surfaces produce specular reflection; rough surfaces cause diffuse scattering.

Refraction is the change in direction of waves as they pass from one medium to another due to a change in wave speed. If a light wave slows down (entering a denser medium), it bends towards the normal; if it speeds up, it bends away from the normal. This is why a straw appears bent in water.

Refraction follows Snell’s law, but for IGCSE you must be able to describe and predict the direction of bending qualitatively using wavefront diagrams and the normal.Published by TutorHao | IGCSE Physics Revision Series | aleveler.com

    1. Circular Motion and Centripetal Force |

Uniform circular motion describes an object moving in a circle at constant speed. Although the speed is constant, the velocity changes continuously because the direction changes, resulting in a centripetal acceleration directed towards the centre.

The centripetal force is the net force causing this acceleration, given by F = mv²/r or F = mrω². Here m is mass, v linear speed, r radius, and ω angular speed.

Angular speed ω = v/r = 2πf = 2π/T, where f is the frequency in hertz and T the period. Many January 2022 questions required students to relate period, frequency, and radius correctly.

    2. Simple Harmonic Motion (SHM) |

SHM occurs when the restoring force is directly proportional to the displacement from equilibrium and acts towards the equilibrium. The defining equation is a = −ω²x, where a is acceleration, x displacement, and ω the angular frequency.

The displacement varies with time as x = A cos(ωt) or x = A sin(ωt), depending on initial conditions. Maximum velocity v_max = ωA occurs at the equilibrium position, while maximum acceleration a_max = ω²A occurs at the extremes.

    位移随时间变化的关系为 x = A cos(ωt) 或 x = A sin(ωt),具体取决于初始条件。

Energy in SHM interchanges between kinetic and potential. Total energy E = ½mω²A² remains constant. The January 2022 paper often tested the ability to sketch velocity-time and acceleration-time graphs and to calculate the time period from given data.

    3. Gravitational Fields | 引力场

Gravitational fields are regions where a mass experiences a force. Newton’s law of gravitation gives the force between two point masses: F = Gm₁m₂/r², where G is the gravitational constant.

Gravitational field strength g is the force per unit mass: g = F/m. Near a spherical mass M, g = GM/r². In a radial field, the field lines point towards the centre of the mass.

Gravitational potential V = −GM/r is the work done per unit mass to bring a test mass from infinity. The relationship ΔV = −∫ g·dr is fundamental. Escape velocity v_esc = √(2GM/R) also links to field concepts.

    4. Electric Fields and Coulomb’s Law |

Electric fields arise from charges. The force between two point charges follows Coulomb’s law: F = kQ₁Q₂/r², where k = 1/(4πε₀). This parallels the gravitational force equation in form.

Electric field strength E = F/q. For a point charge Q, E = kQ/r². In a uniform field between parallel plates, E = V/d, where V is the potential difference and d the plate separation.

Electric potential V_e = kQ/r. The path of a charged particle in an electric field can be analysed by equating electrostatic force to ma, enabling projectile-like calculations. Jan 2022 questions demanded careful sign convention for positive and negative charges.

    电势 V_e = kQ/r。

    5. Capacitors and Energy Storage |

A capacitor stores charge and energy in an electric field. Capacitance C = Q/V is the charge stored per unit potential difference. For a parallel-plate capacitor, C = ε₀A/d, where A is plate area and d separation.

The energy stored can be expressed as E = ½QV = ½CV² = ½Q²/C. Charging and discharging follow exponential laws: Q = Q₀ e^(−t/RC), and the time constant τ = RC determines how quickly these processes occur.

In the Jan 2022 paper, capacitor networks and energy dissipation in discharge circuits were common themes. Understanding the half-life t₁/₂ = RC ln2 is essential for interpreting data.

    6. Magnetic Fields and Forces on Moving Charges |

A magnetic field exerts a force on a moving charge. The magnetic force is F = BQv sinθ, where B is magnetic flux density, Q the charge, v speed, and θ the angle between velocity and field direction.

For a current-carrying conductor, F = BIL sinθ, with L being the length of conductor in the field. Fleming’s left-hand rule gives the direction of force for conventional current.

Charged particles in a uniform magnetic field move in circular arcs with radius r = mv/(BQ). This principle underpins mass spectrometers and particle accelerators. The period of revolution T = 2πm/(BQ) is independent of speed.

    7. Electromagnetic Induction and Magnetic Flux |

Electromagnetic induction occurs when a conductor experiences a change in magnetic flux. Magnetic flux Φ = BA cosθ, where θ is the angle between the field lines and the normal to the area.

Faraday’s law states the induced emf ε = −dΦ/dt. The negative sign reflects Lenz’s law, which dictates that the induced current opposes the change in flux that produced it.

For a coil of N turns, ε = −N dΦ/dt. An alternating generator produces a sinusoidal emf: ε = BANω sin(ωt), where A is coil area and ω angular speed. The Jan 2022 paper often linked flux linkage with graph interpretation.

    8. Linking Circular Motion, SHM, and Fields |

Many Unit 4 problems require fluid movement between topics. For instance, a mass on a spring in SHM can be analysed for energy conservation, while a satellite in circular orbit links gravitational force to centripetal force: GMm/r² = mv²/r.

In a cyclotron, the alternating electric field accelerates particles while the magnetic field provides the centripetal force, keeping them in a circular path. Similarly, the motion of electrons in a magnetic field inside a cathode-ray tube can be compared to motion in uniform electric fields.

Students sitting the January 2022 paper benefited from drawing analogies: gravitational and electric fields share an inverse-square form, and potential gradients in both fields (E = −dV/dr, g = −dV_grav/dr) have identical mathematical structures.

    9. Experimental and Data-Analysis Skills |

The Unit 4 paper frequently embeds data analysis. Candidates must be able to determine time constants from capacitor discharge graphs, calculate g from simple pendulum data, or interpret flux linkage curves.

Key graphical relationships include the linearisation of exponential decay by plotting ln V against t, yielding gradient −1/RC. For a pendulum, T² vs L graph gives g from the slope (slope = 4π²/g).

In capacitor circuits, measuring the time for voltage to halve gives t₁/₂ = RC ln 2. In SHM experiments, mass-spring systems and light gates provide data for T = 2π√(m/k). These practical skills were woven throughout the Jan 2022 questions.

    10. Common Pitfalls and How to Avoid Them | 常见错误与避错策略

One major pitfall is confusing the use of radians and degrees in SHM and circular motion. ω is always in rad s⁻¹, and arguments of sine and cosine must be in radians when differentiating or integrating.

Another common error is ignoring the vector nature of fields. For both gravitational and electric forces, direction matters. In a system of multiple charges or masses, the resultant field is a vector sum, not a scalar sum.

When dealing with electromagnetic induction, students often forget that flux linkage is NΦ, not just Φ. Also, Lenz’s law must be used to determine the polarity of an induced emf, which is frequently tested with multiple-choice diagrams.

Finally, in energy problems, ensure energy conservation is correctly applied. For instance, the work done against a field results in a change in potential energy, and kinetic energy changes must be accounted for systematically.

    11. Preparation Tips Informed by the Jan 2022 Experience |

Students who performed well on the Jan 2022 paper typically built deep conceptual links rather than relying on rote formula application. Practice with rearranging formulas symbolically before inserting numbers reduces arithmetic errors.

Timed practice with past papers under exam conditions is invaluable. Focus on questions that combine topics, such as a charged particle entering both electric and magnetic fields, or satellite motion linked to escape velocity.

Developing the ability to sketch and interpret graphs—velocity-time, energy-displacement, charging/discharging curves—is a cross-topic skill that is consistently rewarded in A-level mark schemes.

Understanding the derivation of key equations in the OxfordAQA International A-Level Physics specification not only strengthens your conceptual grasp but also prepares you for higher-order exam questions. This article walks through the essential derivations, from kinematics to fields and kinetic theory, with clear bilingual explanations paired step by step.

    1. Deriving the SUVAT Equations |

For constant acceleration a, the definition a = (v − u)/t immediately gives the first equation.

    v = u + a t

    加速度恒定时,由定义式 a = (v − u)/t 直接移项即可得到第一个运动学方程。

Average velocity during uniform acceleration is (u + v)/2, so displacement s equals average velocity multiplied by time.

    s = ½ (u + v) t

    匀加速运动的平均速度为 (u + v)/2,因此位移 s = 平均速度 × 时间。

Substituting v = u + at into the displacement formula eliminates v, yielding the standard form.

    s = u t + ½ a t²

    将第一个式子代入消去 v,整理得到含时间的位移公式。

    Finally, eliminating time t between v = u + at and s = ½(u + v)t gives the timeless relation.

    v² = u² + 2 a s

    最后,从两式中消去时间 t,得到不含时间的速度-位移关系。

    2. Projectile Motion Trajectory | 抛体运动轨迹方程

    Resolve the launch velocity u at angle θ: horizontal component u cosθ, vertical component u sinθ. Horizontally, x = (u cosθ) t; vertically, with a = −g, y = (u sinθ) t − ½ g t². Eliminate t to obtain the parabolic trajectory.

    y = x tan θ − (g x²) / (2 u² cos² θ)

    将初速度分解为水平 u cosθ 和竖直 u sinθ。水平方向匀速,x = u cosθ·t;竖直方向加速度 −g,y = u sinθ·t − ½ g t²。消去时间 t,即得抛物线轨迹方程。

    3. Centripetal Acceleration a = v²/r | 向心加速度公式推导

An object moving at constant speed v in a circle of radius r experiences a changing velocity direction. In a short time Δt, the velocity change Δv points toward the centre. By similar triangles, Δv/v = Δs/r = vΔt/r, so the magnitude of acceleration is a = Δv/Δt = v²/r.

    a = v² / r = ω² r

    物体以恒定速率 v 做半径为 r 的圆周运动,速度方向持续变化。极短时间内速度变化量 Δv 指向圆心,由几何相似性得 Δv/v = Δs/r = v·Δt/r,因此向心加速度大小 a = Δv/Δt = v²/r,也可写作 ω² r。

    4. Simple Harmonic Motion & Angular Frequency | 简谐运动与角频率

    In SHM, restoring force F = −k x leads to acceleration a = F/m = −(k/m) x. Defining ω² = k/m gives the fundamental equation of SHM: a = −ω² x. The solution is x = A cos(ωt + φ), and the period follows as T = 2π/ω.

    a = −ω² x , T = 2π √(m/k)

    简谐运动中回复力 F = −k x,加速度 a = −(k/m)x。令 ω² = k/m,则 a = −ω² x,这是简谐运动的特征方程。其解为 x = A cos(ωt + φ),周期 T = 2π/ω = 2π√(m/k)。

    5. Period of a Simple Pendulum | 单摆周期公式推导

For a small angular displacement, the restoring force along the arc is approximately −mg(x/L), where x is the arc length. Hence a = −(g/L) x. Comparing with a = −ω² x yields ω² = g/L, so the period is T = 2π √(L/g).

    T = 2π √(L / g)

    在小角度摆动下,回复力约等于 −mg(x/L),加速度 a = −(g/L)x。与简谐运动标准形式对比,得 ω² = g/L,因此周期 T = 2π√(L/g)。该公式仅在小角度近似下成立。

    6. Gravitational Field Strength g = GM/r² | 引力场强度推导

Newton’s law of gravitation gives F = G M m / r². Since gravitational field strength g is defined as force per unit mass, g = F/m, we directly obtain g = GM / r².

    g = G M / r²

    由牛顿万有引力定律 F = GMm/r²,引力场强度 g 定义为单位质量所受的引力,代入即得径向场强公式 g = GM/r²。该式适用于质点外或球对称质量外部的场。

    7. Electric Field Strength Derivations | 电场强度公式推导

    From Coulomb’s law, the force between point charges is F = k Q q / r². Electric field strength E = F/q, so for a point charge E = k Q / r². For a uniform field between parallel plates, potential difference V is related to work done: qV = F d = q E d, thus V = E d.

    E = k Q / r²

    E = V / d

    根据库仑定律 F = kQq/r²,电场强度 E = F/q,点电荷的场强即为 E = kQ/r²。在平行板匀强电场中,电势差 V 与电场力做功的关系为 qV = qEd,因此 V = Ed,即 E = V/d。

    8. Capacitor Discharge Equation | 电容放电方程推导

    During discharge through a resistor R, the current I equals the rate of decrease of charge: I = −dQ/dt. Using Ohm’s law V = IR and the definition C = Q/V gives V = Q/C. Equating: Q/C = −R dQ/dt, which rearranges to dQ/dt = −Q/(RC). Solving this first-order differential equation gives an exponential decay.

    Q = Q₀ e−t/(RC)

    电容通过电阻放电时,电流 I = −dQ/dt。由欧姆定律 V = IR,且 C = Q/V,得 V = Q/C。联立有 Q/C = −R dQ/dt,即 dQ/dt = −Q/(RC)。求解此一阶微分方程,得到电荷随时间指数

    1. SUVAT Equations: Constant Acceleration | 匀加速运动方程 (SUVAT)

SUVAT equations are the foundation of kinematics in IGCSE Physics. They apply whenever an object moves with uniform acceleration in a straight line. The five variables are s (displacement), u (initial velocity), v (final velocity), a (acceleration), and t (time). You must identify three known quantities to find a fourth, then select the appropriate equation. A common mistake is using the wrong sign for acceleration when an object is decelerating.

五个变量分别是 s(位移)、u(初速度)、v(末速度)、a(加速度)和 t(时间)。

Worked Example: A car accelerates from rest at 3 m/s² for 8 seconds. Calculate the distance travelled.

    Solution: Known values: u = 0 m/s, a = 3 m/s², t = 8 s. We need s. The best SUVAT equation is s = ut + ½at². Substituting gives s = (0 × 8) + ½ × 3 × 8² = 0 + ½ × 3 × 64 = 96 m. Always check your units and ensure the answer is reasonable — 96 m in 8 s makes sense for rapid acceleration.

    解答:已知量:u = 0 m/s,a = 3 m/s²,t = 8 s。

    2. Newton’s Second Law: F = ma | 牛顿第二定律:F = ma

Newton’s Second Law states that the resultant force acting on an object is equal to its mass multiplied by its acceleration. This relationship is fundamental to dynamics problems, especially when multiple forces are present. Always begin by drawing a free-body diagram showing all forces. Remember that the resultant force is the vector sum of all forces, so opposing forces must be subtracted. The unit of force is the newton (N), where 1 N = 1 kg m/s².

Worked Example: A 12 kg box is pulled along a frictionless surface by a horizontal force of 48 N. A resistive force of 12 N opposes the motion. Find the acceleration and the distance travelled in 5 seconds from rest.

    Solution: Resultant force = 48 N − 12 N = 36 N. Using F = ma, we get 36 = 12 × a, so a = 3 m/s². Now apply s = ut + ½at² with u = 0: s = 0 + ½ × 3 × 5² = 37.5 m. This two-step problem shows how to combine force and kinematics concepts seamlessly.

利用 F = ma,得 36 = 12 × a,所以 a = 3 m/s²。现在应用 s = ut + ½at²,其中 u = 0:s = 0 + ½ × 3 × 5² = 37.5 m。

    3. Momentum and Conservation |

Momentum is a vector quantity defined as the product of mass and velocity, p = mv. The principle of conservation of momentum states that in a closed system with no external forces, the total momentum before a collision or explosion equals the total momentum after. This is immensely useful for solving problems involving collisions, recoil, and explosions. Always assign a positive direction to one side and treat velocities in the opposite direction as negative.

Worked Example: A 2 kg trolley moving at 6 m/s to the right collides with a stationary 4 kg trolley. They stick together. Find their common velocity after the collision.

    Solution: Take right as positive. Total momentum before = (2 × 6) + (4 × 0) = 12 kg m/s. After collision, combined mass = 2 + 4 = 6 kg. Let v be the common velocity. Conservation gives 12 = 6 × v, so v = 2 m/s to the right. Note how the stuck-together condition simplifies the final momentum calculation.

    4. Work Done and Gravitational Potential Energy |

Work done is the energy transferred when a force moves an object through a distance in the direction of the force. The equation is W = Fd. Gravitational potential energy (GPE) gained by an object lifted in a uniform gravitational field is ΔEₚ = mgΔh. These two concepts are linked: the work done lifting an object at constant speed equals the gain in GPE, assuming no energy losses. Understanding this equivalence helps solve many lifting and ramp problems.

方程为 W = Fd。

Worked Example: A 25 kg sack is lifted vertically through 3 m at constant speed. Calculate the work done and the gain in GPE. (g = 9.8 N/kg)

(g = 9.8 N/kg)

    Solution: Weight = mg = 25 × 9.8 = 245 N. At constant speed, lifting force = weight = 245 N. Work done = Fd = 245 × 3 = 735 J. Gain in GPE = mgΔh = 25 × 9.8 × 3 = 735 J. The equality confirms energy conservation. Always show both calculations when a question asks for them.

    5. Kinetic Energy and Velocity |

Kinetic energy (KE) is the energy possessed by a moving object, given by Eₖ = ½mv². This formula reveals a squared relationship with velocity, meaning doubling the speed quadruples the kinetic energy. This is a crucial concept for understanding braking distances and impact forces. Rearranging the equation to find velocity from KE is a common exam skill: v = √(2Eₖ/m).

Worked Example: A 0.5 kg ball has 64 J of kinetic energy. Find its speed.

    Solution: Using Eₖ = ½mv², substitute: 64 = ½ × 0.5 × v². Simplify: 64 = 0.25 × v². So v² = 64 ÷ 0.25 = 256. Taking the square root gives v = 16 m/s. Always double-check that you have halved the mass correctly before rearranging, as this step often trips students up.

    6. Springs and Hooke’s Law |

Hooke’s Law states that the extension of a spring is directly proportional to the applied force, provided the elastic limit is not exceeded. This is expressed as F = kx, where k is the spring constant (N/m) and x is the extension (m). The spring constant indicates the stiffness of the spring. Elastic potential energy stored is Eₑ = ½Fx or Eₑ = ½kx². Graphically, the area under a force-extension graph gives the work done.

Worked Example: A spring stretches 4 cm when a 6 N load is hung from it. Find the spring constant in N/m, and the energy stored at this extension.

    Solution: Convert extension to metres: x = 4 cm = 0.04 m. Using F = kx, we get 6 = k × 0.04, so k = 6 ÷ 0.04 = 150 N/m. Energy stored Eₑ = ½Fx = ½ × 6 × 0.04 = 0.12 J. Always convert cm to m in physics calculations to maintain SI consistency and avoid factor-of-100 errors.

    7. Moments and Equilibrium |

A moment is the turning effect of a force about a pivot, calculated as moment = force × perpendicular distance from the pivot. The principle of moments states that for a system in rotational equilibrium, the sum of clockwise moments equals the sum of anticlockwise moments. This principle is essential for solving problems involving levers, beams, and balances. Always identify the pivot clearly and measure perpendicular distances accurately.

Worked Example: A uniform metre rule pivoted at its 50 cm mark has a 2 N weight hanging at the 20 cm mark. What weight must hang at the 80 cm mark to balance the rule horizontally? (Ignore the mass of the rule.)

    Solution: Pivot is at 50 cm. The 2 N weight at 20 cm is 30 cm from the pivot (50 − 20). Its moment is anticlockwise: 2 × 0.30 = 0.60 N m. For balance, the clockwise moment must equal 0.60 N m. The weight W at 80 cm is 30 cm from the pivot (80 − 50). So W × 0.30 = 0.60, giving W = 2 N. Symmetry gives the same weight because the distances are equal on both sides.

    8. Pressure in Fluids |

Pressure is defined as the force acting per unit area, P = F/A. In a fluid, pressure increases with depth due to the weight of the fluid above, as given by P = hρg, where h is the depth, ρ is the fluid density, and g is the gravitational field strength. This equation assumes the fluid is incompressible and at rest. Atmospheric pressure at sea level is approximately 100,000 Pa (or 100 kPa).

Worked Example: A diving bell is submerged in seawater of density 1030 kg/m³. Calculate the pressure at a depth of 25 m, given g = 9.8 N/kg. Express your answer in kPa and state the total pressure including atmospheric pressure (101 kPa).

    Solution: Pressure due to water: P = hρg = 25 × 1030 × 9.8 = 252,350 Pa = 252.35 kPa. Total pressure = water pressure + atmospheric pressure = 252.35 + 101 = 353.35 kPa. Notice how the depth significantly increases the total pressure — nearly 3.5 times atmospheric pressure.

    9. Electrical Power and Energy Transfer |

Electrical power is the rate at which electrical energy is transferred, calculated using P = IV, P = I²R, or P = V²/R. The choice of formula depends on the known quantities. Energy transferred is E = Pt = IVt, typically measured in joules (J) or kilowatt-hours (kWh) for larger domestic consumption. Understanding which formula is most efficient saves time in multi-step problems.

Worked Example: A 230 V electric heater draws a current of 4 A. Calculate its power rating and the energy transferred in 10 minutes in joules.

    Solution: Power P = IV = 4 × 230 = 920 W. Time t = 10 min = 600 s. Energy E = Pt = 920 × 600 = 552,000 J (or 552 kJ). If the question asked for kWh, we would use hours: E = 0.92 kW × (10/60) h = 0.153 kWh. Showing both conversions demonstrates full understanding.

    10. Wave Speed and the Wave Equation |

The wave equation v = fλ links wave speed (v), frequency (f), and wavelength (λ). This relationship holds for all types of waves, including sound, light, and water waves. Frequency is measured in hertz (Hz), wavelength in metres (m), and speed in metres per second (m/s). When solving problems, check whether you are given frequency or period (T = 1/f), and adjust accordingly.

Worked Example: A sound wave travels at 340 m/s in air. If its wavelength is 0.85 m, calculate the frequency and the time period of the wave.

    Solution: Using v = fλ, rearrange to f = v/λ = 340 ÷ 0.85 = 400 Hz. Time period T = 1/f = 1/400 = 0.0025 s (or 2.5 ms). This frequency lies within the range of human hearing (20 Hz to 20 kHz), which is a useful real-world check for sound problems.

    11. Resistance and Ohm’s Law |

Ohm’s Law states that the current through a conductor is directly proportional to the potential difference across it, provided temperature remains constant. This is expressed as V = IR. Resistance combines with circuit rules: in series, total resistance Rₜ = R₁ + R₂ + …; in parallel, 1/Rₜ = 1/R₁ + 1/R₂ + … . Recognising series and parallel arrangements quickly is a vital exam skill that saves precious minutes.

这表示为 V = IR。

Worked Example: Two resistors of 6 Ω and 3 Ω are connected in parallel, and this combination is connected in series with a 4 Ω resistor. Calculate the total resistance across the whole arrangement.

    Solution: For the parallel pair: 1/Rp = 1/6 + 1/3 = 1/6 + 2/6 = 3/6, so Rp = 6/3 = 2 Ω. Then total resistance Rₜ = Rp + 4 = 2 + 4 = 6 Ω. Always work stepwise — simplify parallel branches first, then add series resistances. A common error is adding all resistances directly as if they were in series.

    12. Specific Heat Capacity | 比热容

Specific heat capacity (c) is the energy required to raise the temperature of 1 kg of a substance by 1°C. The thermal energy transferred is Q = mcΔθ, where m is mass, c is specific heat capacity, and Δθ is the temperature change. Water has a particularly high specific heat capacity of 4200 J/(kg °C), which makes it excellent for thermal storage. Be precise with temperature changes — Δθ is always final temperature minus initial temperature.

Worked Example: How much energy is needed to heat 2.5 kg of water from 15°C to 85°C? (cw = 4200 J/(kg °C)). If a 2000 W heater is used, how long will this take, assuming no heat losses?

    Solution: Δθ = 85 − 15 = 70°C. Q = mcΔθ = 2.5 × 4200 × 70 = 735,000 J. Using P = E/t, rearrange to t = E/P = 735,000 ÷ 2000 = 367.5 s (about 6.13 minutes). This type of multi-concept problem tests your ability to link thermal physics with electrical power seamlessly.

    解答:Δθ = 85 − 15 = 70°C。Q = mcΔθ = 2.5 × 4200 × 70 = 735,000 J。

    12. Tips for Success |

Start your revision by printing a copy of the syllabus and ticking off topics as you review them. Focus on the command words in questions—such as ‘state’, ‘describe’, ‘explain’, and ‘calculate’—and give answers at the appropriate level of detail. Practice past papers under timed conditions and mark them using the official scheme, noting where marks are awarded.

Make summary notes that link concepts together, and draw clearly labelled diagrams. In practical-based questions, always mention safety and reliability of results. Revision that interleaves topics, instead of cramming them one by one, is proven to improve retention. Finally, ensure you understand unit conversions and significant figures, as these are commonly penalised in calculations.
