    1. Our Solar System and Orbits |

The Solar System consists of one star (the Sun), eight planets, their moons, dwarf planets, asteroids and comets. The planets orbit the Sun in elliptical paths, held in place by the Sun’s gravitational pull. Moons orbit planets, and artificial satellites orbit Earth for communication, GPS and research.

For a stable orbit, the gravitational force provides the required centripetal force. The orbital speed of a planet changes: it moves faster when closer to the Sun (perihelion) and slower when farther away (aphelion). You must be able to explain how changing the radius affects orbital period and speed — a smaller orbit means a shorter period and higher speed.

    Gravitational force = Centripetal force: F = mv²/r = GMm/r²

    • The force of gravity decreases with the square of the distance.
    • Orbital period T ∝ r³/² by Kepler’s third law (derived from equating forces).

    2. The Life Cycle of Stars |

Stars form from massive clouds of gas and dust called nebulae. Gravity pulls the material together, forming a protostar. As the core becomes dense and hot enough, nuclear fusion of hydrogen into helium begins — the star enters the main sequence stage. Our Sun is a main sequence star.

The fate of a star depends on its mass. Low-mass stars (like the Sun) eventually expand into red giants, shed their outer layers as a planetary nebula, and leave behind a hot, dense white dwarf. High-mass stars become red supergiants, and then explode in a supernova. The remnant core can collapse into a neutron star or, if massive enough, a black hole.

Main sequence 主序 Hydrogen fusion in core 核心氢聚变
Post-main 主序后 Red giant 红巨星 → planetary nebula → white dwarf 白矮星 Red supergiant → supernova → neutron star or black hole 中子星或黑洞

    3. Nuclear Fusion in Stars |

Main sequence stars fuse hydrogen nuclei (protons) into helium. This requires extremely high temperatures (around 15 million K in the Sun’s core) and pressure to overcome electrostatic repulsion between protons. The fusion process releases energy according to E = mc² — a tiny amount of mass is converted into a huge amount of energy, which powers the star and produces the radiation we detect.

In later stages, heavier elements are fused: helium fuses into carbon and oxygen in red giants (via the triple-alpha process), and in massive stars fusion continues up to iron. Iron fusion absorbs energy rather than releasing it, triggering the core collapse that leads to a supernova.

    4. The Doppler Effect and Redshift |

When a wave source moves relative to an observer, the observed frequency changes — this is the Doppler effect. If the source moves towards us, waves are compressed (higher frequency, shorter wavelength); if it moves away, waves are stretched (lower frequency, longer wavelength). Light from distant galaxies shows systematic redshift, meaning their spectral lines are shifted towards the red end of the spectrum.

Redshift provides evidence that the Universe is expanding. For a receding galaxy, the redshift z is given by:

    红移为宇宙膨胀提供了证据。对于退行星系,红移 z 由下式定义:

    z = (λ observed – λ rest) / λ rest

The larger the redshift, the faster the galaxy is moving away, and the farther it is (Hubble’s Law: v = H₀ d). This supports the Big Bang theory.

    5. The Expanding Universe and the Big Bang |

Edwin Hubble discovered that galaxies are moving away from us, with speed proportional to distance. This implies the Universe is expanding. Tracing this expansion backwards leads to the idea that all matter and energy were once concentrated in an extremely hot, dense point — the Big Bang, about 13.8 billion years ago.

Key evidence includes cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation — the ‘afterglow’ of the Big Bang — and the observed abundance of light elements (hydrogen and helium) that matches theoretical predictions. The Big Bang theory does not explain what caused the initial singularity, but it describes the evolution of the Universe from that state.

    6. Orbital Mechanics and Gravitational Fields |

In the GCSE Edexcel specification, you need to understand that gravity is a force that acts at a distance and causes all objects with mass to attract one another. The gravitational field strength g at a point is the force per unit mass (g = F/m). On Earth, g ≈ 9.8 N/kg. On other planets, g is different due to their mass and radius.

For a planet, g = GM/r², where M is the planet’s mass and r is its radius. This means a more massive planet has stronger surface gravity, but a planet with the same mass packed into a smaller radius has even stronger gravity. You may be asked to compare the weight of an object on different planets using ratios.

    7. Artificial Satellites and Their Uses |

Artificial satellites orbit Earth for many purposes. Geostationary satellites orbit at an altitude of about 36,000 km above the equator, with a period of 24 hours, so they appear to stay fixed above a point on Earth. They are used for communications, TV broadcasting, and weather monitoring because ground-based dishes do not need to track them.

Low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites orbit closer to Earth (200–2000 km) with periods of about 90 minutes. They are used for imaging, Earth observation, and scientific experiments. Polar orbits allow satellites to scan the entire Earth as the planet rotates beneath them.

    • Geostationary: always above same point on equator; high latency due to distance.
    • LEO: fast orbit, low latency, but must be tracked or form constellation for continuous coverage.

    8. The Solar System Bodies: Planets, Moons, Comets, Asteroids |

Planets are large bodies that orbit the Sun, have cleared their orbit of debris, and are nearly spherical. The four inner planets (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars) are rocky; the four outer planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune) are gas giants or ice giants. Dwarf planets like Pluto share similar features but have not cleared their orbital neighborhoods.

Moons (natural satellites) orbit planets; they vary widely in size and composition. Comets are icy bodies that originate from the Kuiper Belt or Oort Cloud. As a comet approaches the Sun, its ice vaporises, forming a glowing coma and a tail that always points away from the Sun due to solar wind. Asteroids are rocky objects mainly found in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.

    9. Brightness, Luminosity and Parallax |

The observed brightness of a star depends on its intrinsic luminosity and its distance from Earth. Luminosity is the total energy radiated per second; brightness is the power per unit area reaching us. The relationship follows the inverse square law: brightness ∝ luminosity / distance².

To measure distances to nearby stars, astronomers use parallax — the apparent shift in a star’s position as seen from Earth at different points in its orbit. The parallax angle (measured in arcseconds) decreases as distance increases: the farther the star, the smaller the parallax. The method works well only for relatively nearby stars.

    10. CMBR and the Fate of the Universe |

Cosmic microwave background radiation (CMBR) is electromagnetic radiation left over from the Big Bang. It fills the entire Universe and has a nearly uniform temperature of about 2.7 K. The slight temperature fluctuations (anisotropies) provide a snapshot of the early Universe and confirm predictions of the Big Bang model.

The ultimate fate of the Universe depends on its density and the nature of dark energy. Observations suggest the expansion is accelerating, which implies the Universe will continue to expand forever — eventually becoming cold and dark (the ‘Heat Death’ or ‘Big Freeze’). Alternative scenarios like the Big Crunch (recollapse) are not supported by current data. You should be able to link redshift observations and CMBR evidence to the expanding Universe.

    11. Exam Tips and Common Pitfalls |

Students often confuse luminosity and brightness — remember, luminosity is an intrinsic property, brightness depends on distance. Another common mistake is mixing up redshift with the Doppler effect for sound; always refer to light and spectral lines in astronomy questions. When describing stellar evolution, ensure you state the mass dependence clearly.

In calculations, use the correct formula with consistent units. Show all steps when equating gravitational force to centripetal force to justify periodic relationships. Finally, practise explaining ‘why the Universe is expanding’ using Hubble’s Law and redshift, not just stating the observation.

From X-ray images of broken bones to ultrasound scans of unborn babies, these techniques rely on a deep understanding of how physical phenomena interact with the human body. This article summarises the key concepts required for GCSE Physics, covering imaging methods, nuclear medicine, radiotherapy and the fundamental safety measures that protect patients and medical staff.

    1. Medical Physics Overview |

Medical physics applies the concepts of waves, ionising radiation and nuclear decays to clinical practice. The main areas you need to understand are: how X‑rays and CT scans use electromagnetic radiation to see inside the body; how ultrasound uses high‑frequency sound waves for safe imaging; how radioactive tracers map organ function; and how targeted beams of radiation can destroy cancerous cells. A thorough grasp of these applications also requires knowledge of the potential hazards and the ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) principle for radiation protection.

    2. X‑ray Imaging | X

X‑rays are a form of high‑energy electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths shorter than ultraviolet light. They are produced in an X‑ray tube when fast‑moving electrons, accelerated by a high voltage, collide with a metal target. The sudden deceleration of the electrons releases energy as X‑ray photons. Because X‑rays can penetrate soft tissue but are absorbed by dense materials such as bone and metal, a detector placed behind the patient captures a shadow image. The parts where fewer X‑rays reach the detector appear white on the film or digital sensor, while regions where X‑rays pass through easily appear dark.

X‑ray imaging is quick and relatively inexpensive, making it ideal for detecting bone fractures, dental problems and chest abnormalities. However, X‑rays are ionising, meaning they can knock electrons out of atoms and cause damage to DNA. Therefore their use must be justified, and exposure must be kept to a minimum. Lead shielding and modern digital detectors that require shorter exposure times have significantly reduced the radiation dose.

    3. CT Scanning |

A CT (computed tomography) scanner uses X‑rays to produce detailed cross‑sectional images, or ‘slices’, of the body. The patient lies on a motorised bed that moves through a doughnut‑shaped gantry. An X‑ray tube and a bank of detectors rotate around the patient, taking numerous projections from different angles. A computer processes these projections to construct a 3D image of the internal structures. Because CT scans distinguish between tissues with very similar densities, they are much more detailed than conventional X‑ray images and can reveal tumours, blood clots and organ damage.

The main disadvantage of CT is the higher radiation dose — a single CT scan can deliver the equivalent of hundreds of conventional X‑rays. For this reason, CT is reserved for cases where the diagnostic benefit outweighs the risk, and protocols are continuously refined to use the lowest possible dose. Contrast agents containing iodine or barium may be swallowed or injected to enhance visibility of certain organs.

    4. Ultrasound Imaging |

Ultrasound imaging uses high‑frequency sound waves (typically 2‑18 MHz), which are above the range of human hearing. A transducer placed on the skin sends short pulses of ultrasound into the body and listens for echoes. When the sound waves encounter a boundary between two tissues with different acoustic impedances, some of the energy is reflected back. The time delay between sending the pulse and receiving the echo is used to calculate the depth of the boundary, and the strength of the echo indicates the nature of the tissue. A computer builds a real‑time image from these echoes.

Ultrasound is completely non‑ionising, making it extremely safe for monitoring pregnancies and examining soft organs such as the liver, kidneys and heart. The distance to a reflecting boundary can be calculated using the equation: distance = (speed × time) / 2. The factor of 2 appears because the pulse travels to the boundary and back. In soft tissue, the speed of ultrasound is approximately 1540 m/s.

A limitation of ultrasound is that it cannot penetrate bone or gas‑filled cavities, so it is not suitable for examining the adult brain or lungs. The resolution is also lower than that of CT or MRI. Gel is applied to the skin to minimise the impedance mismatch between the transducer and the air, which would otherwise cause almost total reflection of the ultrasound.

    5. Endoscopy |

An endoscope is a flexible tube that uses bundles of optical fibres to allow doctors to see inside hollow organs such as the stomach, colon or airways. The principle is total internal reflection. Light from an external source travels along one bundle of fibres to illuminate the area, and the reflected light travels back along a second bundle to form a visible image. Each glass or plastic fibre consists of a core with a higher refractive index surrounded by a cladding with a lower refractive index, ensuring that light rays striking the boundary at angles greater than the critical angle are trapped inside the core.

Endoscopy is minimally invasive, reducing the need for open surgery. It can also be combined with tiny surgical instruments to perform biopsies or remove polyps. No ionising radiation is involved, and the main risks are related to sedation or minor tissue damage. Modern endoscopes often use a tiny camera at the tip instead of a coherent imaging bundle, but the illumination bundle still relies on optical fibres.

    6. Nuclear Medicine: Radioactive Tracers |

In nuclear medicine, a small amount of a radioactive isotope — called a radiotracer — is introduced into the body, usually by injection, swallowing or inhalation. The tracer is chosen so that it concentrates in the organ or tissue under investigation. For example, a compound containing iodine‑123 will be taken up by the thyroid gland. A gamma camera placed outside the body detects the gamma rays emitted by the tracer and builds a functional image that shows not just structure but also metabolic activity.

The ideal radiotracer has a short half‑live — long enough to perform the scan but short enough to minimise the patient’s radiation dose. It should emit gamma rays, because alpha and beta particles would be largely absorbed by the body before reaching the detector. Technetium‑99m (⁹⁹ᵐTc) is the most widely used radioisotope in nuclear medicine; it has a half‑life of 6 hours and emits gamma photons of 140 keV, which are easily detected by a gamma camera. The ‘m’ indicates a metastable nuclear isomer.

Positron emission tomography (PET) is an advanced form of nuclear medicine that detects metabolic changes at the cellular level. The patient is injected with a radiotracer labelled with a positron‑emitting isotope, commonly fluorine‑18 (¹⁸F) which is attached to a glucose analogue called FDG. Cells with high metabolic activity, such as cancer cells, absorb more FDG. Inside the body, a fluorine‑18 nucleus decays by emitting a positron (the antimatter counterpart of an electron). The positron travels a short distance before annihilating with an electron, producing two identical gamma photons that travel in almost exactly opposite directions.

The PET scanner consists of a ring of detectors that identify pairs of photons arriving simultaneously. Because the two photons are emitted at 180° to each other, a computer can reconstruct the line along which the annihilation occurred. This allows the creation of a 3D map of radiotracer concentration. PET is often combined with CT (PET‑CT) to provide both functional and anatomical information in the same scan.

    8. Radiotherapy |

Radiotherapy uses high‑energy ionising radiation to kill cancer cells or stop them from multiplying. The goal is to deliver a lethal dose to the tumour while minimising damage to surrounding healthy tissue. External beam radiotherapy typically uses X‑rays produced by a linear accelerator or gamma rays from a cobalt‑60 source. The beam is shaped with multi‑leaf collimators and directed at the tumour from several angles, so that the tumour receives the maximum cumulative dose and healthy tissue receives only a fraction.

Brachytherapy involves placing a sealed radioactive source (e.g. iridium‑192 or iodine‑125 seeds) directly inside or next to the tumour. This concentrates the dose in the tumour and sharply reduces the exposure to distant organs. Common side effects of radiotherapy, such as fatigue and skin irritation, arise because rapidly dividing healthy cells (e.g. in the skin and gut) are also affected.

    9. Safety in Medical Physics |

All medical procedures that involve ionising radiation must follow strict safety principles. The three key methods for reducing exposure are: time — minimise the duration of exposure; distance — increase the distance from the source (intensity follows an inverse square law); and shielding — place absorbing materials such as lead or concrete between the source and the person. Medical staff wear film badges or thermoluminescent dosimeters to monitor their cumulative dose.

The risk associated with a particular dose is estimated using the concept of effective dose, measured in sieverts (Sv). For context, a chest X‑ray delivers about 0.02 mSv, while a CT abdomen scan may deliver about 10 mSv. The potential benefits must always be weighed against the radiation risks. Pregnant women and children are particularly sensitive, so ultrasound is preferred when clinically possible.

    10. Comparison of Imaging Techniques |

Technique Uses ionising radiation? Image type Typical applications Key risk
X‑ray Yes 2D shadow Bone fractures, chest DNA damage
CT scan Yes 3D cross‑section Tumours, internal bleeding Higher dose
Ultrasound No Real‑time 2D Pregnancy, heart, abdomen None (non‑ionising)
Gamma camera (SPECT) Yes Functional 2D/3D Bone scans, thyroid Internal dose
PET scan Yes Functional 3D Cancer staging, brain Positron dose
Endoscopy No Direct visual GI tract, joints Perforation

This table summarises the main imaging modalities you may encounter in the GCSE course. Note that while endoscopy provides a direct view and is not an imaging technique in the sense of generating a digital picture from a distance, it is still classified under medical physics because of its reliance on optical fibres and total internal reflection.

    11. Key Calculations and Equations |

Several simple calculations can appear in GCSE exam questions. The ultrasound distance equation is fundamental: distance (m) = speed (m/s) × time (s) / 2. If a pulse takes 80 microseconds to return from a reflector, and the speed of ultrasound in tissue is 1540 m/s, the depth is (1540 × 80×10⁻⁶) ÷ 2 = 0.0616 m ≈ 6.2 cm. Always remember to convert microseconds to seconds and to halve the product.

For nuclear medicine, you may be asked to interpret half‑life data. If a radiotracer has a half‑life of 6 hours, after 18 hours three half‑lives have passed, meaning the activity has fallen to (½)³ = ⅛ of its original value. A short half‑life is desirable for tracers to limit the time the body is exposed to radiation, but it must be long enough to complete imaging. The activity equation A = A₀ × (½)^(t / Tₕ) can be used, where Tₕ is the half‑life.

可使用活度方程 A = A₀ × (½)^(t / Tₕ),其中Tₕ为半衰期。

The inverse square law for gamma radiation intensity is also relevant: doubling the distance from a point source reduces the intensity to one quarter. This explains why medical staff stand behind lead screens or keep their distance during X‑ray and nuclear medicine procedures.

A wave travels exactly one full wavelength λ in the time it takes to complete one oscillation, the period T. Speed is distance over time, so the wave speed v is given by the wavelength divided by the period: v = λ / T. Since frequency f is the reciprocal of the period (f = 1/T), we substitute to obtain the familiar form v = fλ.

    波在一个完整的振动周期 T 内恰好传播一个波长 λ。速度等于距离除以时间,因此波速 v = λ / T。又因为频率 f 是周期的倒数(f = 1/T),代入后便得到熟知的公式 v = fλ。

    v = fλ

    2. Snell’s Law: n₁ sinθ₁ = n₂ sinθ₂ | 斯涅尔定律 n₁ sinθ₁ = n₂ sinθ₂ 的推导

When a wave crosses a boundary between two media, the wavefront must remain continuous. This geometric condition leads to the relationship sinθ₁ / v₁ = sinθ₂ / v₂, where v₁ and v₂ are the wave speeds in the two media. The absolute refractive index of a medium is defined as n = c / v, so v₁ = c / n₁ and v₂ = c / n₂. Substituting these into the wavefront condition gives sinθ₁ / (c/n₁) = sinθ₂ / (c/n₂). Cancelling c from both sides yields Snell’s law: n₁ sinθ₁ = n₂ sinθ₂.

    n₁ sinθ₁ = n₂ sinθ₂

Total internal reflection occurs when light travels from an optically denser medium of refractive index n into a less dense medium with n = 1 (such as air) and the angle of refraction reaches 90°. Applying Snell’s law with n₁ = n, n₂ = 1, θ₁ = θc (critical angle), and θ₂ = 90°, we get n sinθc = 1 × sin90° = 1. Hence sinθc = 1 / n. This formula is valid only when the second medium is air or vacuum.

    sin θc = 1 / n

A diffraction grating consists of many parallel slits with equal spacing d. When monochromatic light passes through, waves from adjacent slits have a path difference of d sinθ to a distant point at angle θ. Constructive interference occurs when this path difference equals an integer multiple of the wavelength, nλ. Therefore, the condition for a bright fringe is d sinθ = nλ, where n = 0, ±1, ±2, … is the order number.

    d sinθ = nλ

    5. Ohm’s Law and Resistance: V = IR | 欧姆定律 V = IR 的推导

Resistance R is defined as the ratio of the potential difference V across a conductor to the current I flowing through it: R = V / I. For an ohmic conductor at constant temperature, this ratio is constant. Rearranging gives V = IR, which states that the voltage drop is directly proportional to the current. This is the foundation of DC circuit analysis.

    电阻 R 定义为导体两端的电势差 V 与通过导体的电流 I 之比:R = V / I。对于温度不变的欧姆导体,该比值为常数。将定义式变形即得 V = IR,表明电压降与电流成正比。这是直流电路分析的基础。

    V = IR

    6. Power in DC Circuits: P = IV = I²R = V²/R | 直流电路功率公式推导

    Electrical power is the rate at which energy is transferred. When a charge Q moves through a potential difference V, the work done is W = QV. Power P = W / t = (Q / t) V = I V. By substituting Ohm’s law V = IR into P = IV, we get P = I (IR) = I²R. Alternatively, writing I = V / R gives P = (V / R) V = V² / R. These three forms are equivalent for ohmic conductors.

    电功率是能量传输的速率。电荷 Q 通过电势差 V 时,所做的功为 W = QV。功率 P = W / t = (Q / t) V = I V。将欧姆定律 V = IR 代入 P = IV,得 P = I (IR) = I²R;或由 I = V / R 代入,得 P = (V / R) V = V² / R。这三个表达式对欧姆导体等价。

    P = IV = I²R = V²/R

    7. EMF and Internal Resistance: ε = I(R + r) | 电动势与内阻公式 ε = I(R + r) 的推导

A real source of emf ε has an internal resistance r. According to energy conservation, the total power supplied by the source equals the power dissipated in the external load R plus the power wasted inside the source: ε I = I²R + I²r. Dividing through by the current I yields ε = IR + Ir = I(R + r). The terminal potential difference V across the source is then V = ε – Ir.

    实际电源具有电动势 ε 和内阻 r。根据能量守恒,电源提供的总电功率等于外电路负载 R 消耗的功率与内阻上消耗的功率之和:ε I = I²R + I²r。两边同除以电流 I 得 ε = IR + Ir = I(R + r)。此时电源的端电压 V 为 V = ε – Ir。

    ε = I(R + r)

    8. Energy Transferred: W = VIt | 电功公式 W = VIt 的推导

The energy dissipated in a circuit component can be derived from the definitions of power and current. Since power P = VI and time t is the duration, the total energy transferred W equals power multiplied by time: W = Pt = VIt. Alternatively, from the definition of current I = Q / t, the charge Q = It, and work done W = QV, we again obtain W = VIt.

    电路中元件消耗的能量可从功率和电流的定义导出。因功率 P = VI,持续时间为 t,故总能量 W = Pt = VIt。也可从电流定义 I = Q / t 得电荷 Q = It,再结合做功 W = QV,同样得到 W = VIt。

    W = VIt

    9. Electronvolt: 1 eV = e × 1 V | 电子伏特与焦耳的换算推导

An electronvolt is defined as the kinetic energy gained by a single electron when it is accelerated through a potential difference of exactly 1 volt. The work done by the electric field is W = qΔV, where q is the elementary charge e = 1.60 × 10⁻¹⁹ C. Thus, 1 eV = e × 1 V = 1.60 × 10⁻¹⁹ J. This unit is enormously helpful when dealing with energies on the atomic scale.

    1 eV = 1.60 × 10⁻¹⁹ J

    10. Photoelectric Effect Stopping Potential: eVs = hf – φ |

Einstein’s photoelectric equation states that the maximum kinetic energy Kmax of emitted photoelectrons is Kmax = hf – φ, where hf is the photon energy and φ is the work function of the metal. In the stopping potential experiment, a reverse voltage Vs is applied until even the most energetic electrons are brought to rest. At that point, the loss of kinetic energy equals the gain in electrical potential energy: eVs = Kmax. Combining the two gives eVs = hf – φ.

    爱因斯坦光电方程指出,逸出光电子的最大动能 Kmax = hf – φ,其中 hf 是光子能量,φ 为金属的逸出功。在截止电势差的实验中,施加反向电压 Vs,直到动能最大的电子也被遏止。此时动能损失等于电势能的增加:eVs = Kmax。联立即得 eVs = hf – φ。

    eVs = hf – φ

    11. de Broglie Wavelength: λ = h / p | 德布罗意波长公式 λ = h / p 的推导

The de Broglie relation emerges from the wave-particle duality first applied to light. A photon has energy E = hf and travels at speed c, so its momentum p = E / c = hf / c. Using the wave equation c = fλ, we replace c to find p = hf / (fλ) = h / λ. Rearranging gives λ = h / p for photons. De Broglie proposed that the same equation holds for all particles, linking their wavelength to momentum.

    德布罗意关系来源于最初应用于光的波粒二象性。光子能量 E = hf,以光速 c 传播,其动量 p = E / c = hf / c。利用波速公式 c = fλ 消去 c,得 p = hf / (fλ) = h / λ。变形后对光子有 λ = h / p。德布罗意提出,所有实物粒子均满足同一方程,将其波长与动量联系起来。

    λ = h / p

📚 AS Physics: Decoding Unit 2 Example Responses and Key Concepts | AS

Unit 2 of the International AS Physics course, ‘Physics at Work’, bridges the gap between theoretical ideas and real-world phenomena. This article unpacks the example responses typically seen in PH02 exams, breaking down why certain answers gain full marks while others lose precious points. By studying these model solutions, you will sharpen your ability to apply concepts like wave behaviour, refraction, superposition, photoelectric effect, and measurement analysis under exam pressure.

    1. Understanding the Scope of Unit 2: Waves and Quantum Phenomena | 理解 Unit 2 的范围:波动与量子现象

PH02 covers progressive waves, refraction, superposition, stationary waves, and the introduction to quantum physics via the photoelectric effect. The examiners’ example responses show that students often mix up the definitions of key terms. A clear distinction between ‘displacement’ and ‘amplitude’, or between ‘phase difference’ expressed in radians versus degrees, can make the difference between a grade B and an A.

    • Always define waves precisely: An increase in frequency does not change wave speed in a given medium; it reduces wavelength.
    • Phase and path difference: Path difference of λ corresponds to a phase difference of 2π radians, not 360° unless specified in degrees.

A model response to a definition question about ‘wavelength’ would state: ‘Wavelength is the minimum distance between two consecutive points oscillating in phase, such as two adjacent crests, measured in metres.’ Vague phrases like ‘distance between two waves’ are marked incorrect.

    2. Refraction and Snell’s Law: Common Pitfalls in Example Responses |

When using n₁ sinθ₁ = n₂ sinθ₂, many candidates forget to identify the correct medium each angle belongs to. The angles must be measured between the ray and the normal. Model answers always include a labelled diagram showing the angle labels clearly. In past PH02 papers, a mark is awarded for stating that for total internal reflection to occur, the incident medium must have a higher refractive index and the angle of incidence must exceed the critical angle.

sin θ_c = n₂ / n₁, where n₁ > n₂

In an example response, a step-by-step calculation would show: n₁ = 1.50, n₂ = 1.00, so sin θ_c = 1/1.50 = 0.667, giving θ_c ≈ 41.8°. Merely stating 42° without working loses a mark if the question asks to ‘show that’.

    3. Superposition, Interference, and Coherence: Decoding the Mark Scheme |

The concept of coherence is frequently tested. An exemplary response defines two sources as coherent if they emit waves with a constant phase difference and the same frequency. The key word is ‘constant’ – not ‘same phase’, but ‘constant phase difference’. In double-slit interference, central maximum is always bright because path difference is zero and waves arrive in phase.

The fringe spacing equation Δx = λD / d appears in nearly every Unit 2 exam. Model answers always convert all measurements to metres and state assumptions: the slits act as coherent sources, and D is much larger than d so small-angle approximations hold. A common error in student responses is leaving slit separation in millimetres – instant mark deduction.

    4. Stationary Waves on Strings and in Pipes: Full-Mark Explanations |

Stationary wave formation is best explained by following the examiner’s priority: describe how a progressive wave reflects at a boundary, superposes with the incident wave, and where the waves are in antiphase they cancel (nodes), where in phase they reinforce (antinodes). Example responses often lose marks for skipping the ‘superposition’ step and jumping directly to nodes and antinodes.

For a string fixed at both ends, the fundamental frequency f₀ corresponds to one half-wavelength between the fixed ends. Model answers relate frequency, tension T, and linear density μ:

    f = (1/2L) √(T/μ)

An examiner’s comment on an example response would note that saying ‘increase tension increases frequency’ earns only 1 mark; you must relate it to wave speed v = √(T/μ) and λ fixed by the geometry, so if v increases then f must increase.

    5. Standing Waves in Air Columns: Modelling Exam Answers |

For a pipe closed at one end, the example response draws the fundamental mode as a node at the closed end and an antinode at the open end, showing that length L = λ/4. Harmonics are only odd multiples: first harmonic has λ/4, third harmonic 3λ/4, etc. Students who forget to label ‘node’ and ‘antinode’ on diagrams lose descriptive marks even if sketched correctly.

    6. The Photoelectric Effect: Top-Scoring Written Responses |

The photoelectric effect marks the transition from classical wave theory to quantum physics. Exemplar answers always cite Einstein’s equation:

    E_photon = hf = Φ + KE_max

where hf is photon energy, Φ is work function (minimum energy to release an electron), and KE_max is the maximum kinetic energy of emitted electron. A perfect response explains that threshold frequency f₀ is the minimum frequency where photon energy exactly equals the work function, so KE_max = 0.

Many sample responses fail to clarify that intensity of light determines the number of photons, thus the photocurrent, but does not affect the maximum kinetic energy of each electron. This distinction is critical. The stopping potential V_s is linked to KE_max: e V_s = KE_max. Model answers sketch the graph of photocurrent vs applied potential difference for different intensities, with the same stopping potential for a given frequency.

遏止电压 V_s 与 KE_max 相关:e V_s = KE_max。

    7. Measuring Planck’s Constant: Typical Practical Scenario |

A regular PH02 question involves an LED circuit where the voltage across the LED is increased until it barely lights, then hf ≈ eV. Students are asked to plot V against f for different coloured LEDs and to find h from the gradient. Example responses highlight the need to ensure that eV corresponds to the energy loss of an electron, not the photon energy directly – because some energy is lost thermally. The gradient equals h/e, so h = gradient × e.

    Red /
    Green /
    Blue /

Modelled answers always check the straight line fit, state the gradient correctly, and provide units. A common slip is using frequency in Hz instead of THz, causing gradient orders of magnitude wrong.

    8. Wave-Particle Duality and Electron Diffraction: Tackling Explanation Questions |

Examiners look for precise language when describing evidence for wave-like behaviour of particles. For electron diffraction through graphite, example responses explain: the electron beam produces a pattern of concentric rings on a fluorescent screen, proving interference, a property of waves. The de Broglie wavelength λ = h/p, where p = mv, matches the atomic spacing in graphite. If the accelerating voltage increases, the rings shrink – because λ decreases, so path difference for constructive interference decreases, requiring smaller angles.

An exemplary response would add: ‘This experiment shows that particles can display wave properties; the wavelength is dependent on momentum, not on the particle’s mass alone.’

    9. Using a Ripple Tank to Measure Wavelength and Frequency: Practical Skills in Answers |

Unit 2 places emphasis on experimental techniques. In a question about determining the speed of water waves using a ripple tank, a top-level response describes freezing the wave pattern with a stroboscope, measuring the distance between, for example, 10 clearly seen bright wavefronts, then dividing by 10 to find wavelength. Frequency is obtained from the number of wavefronts per second via the motor frequency or stroboscope setting. Then v = fλ.

然后 v = fλ。

Example responses emphasise the need to avoid parallax error by viewing perpendicularly and to repeat measurements for an average. The key link to theory is that wave speed depends on depth of water in the tank; the response might note that this is because the restoring force is gravity, which acts more strongly on longer wavelength components.

    10. Standing Wave Setups in Microwave/Optical: Applying Knowledge |

A common PH02 scenario: a microwave transmitter sends waves towards a metal sheet, creating a standing wave. A probe moved along the line detects maxima and minima. The distance between adjacent nodes is λ/2. The example solution calculates wavelength by measuring the distance moved by the probe between, say, 10 nodes and dividing by 5 (not 10). Careful wording: ‘distance between 10 nodes’ is 9 half-wavelengths, leading to errors. Model answers explicitly say ‘distance between n consecutive nodes = (n-1)λ/2’.

    11. Graph Interpretation and Analysis: Mark-Earning Strategies |

Unit 2 exams frequently present graphs such as V against f for the photoelectric effect, or sinθ against N for diffraction gratings. Example responses show that to find a gradient, you must use a large triangle with coordinates read from the line of best fit, not table points. Units of the gradient must be derived and stated. For a straight line through the origin, proportionality is asserted only if the line passes through the origin within experimental error.

When asked to comment on the reliability of a result, high-scoring candidates mention the number of data points, whether they were repeated, and whether the line fits well. Generic phrases like ‘good accuracy’ without justification get zero credit.

    12. Combining Concepts: Synthesising Wave and Quantum Ideas in Extended Answers |

Higher-tier questions demand linking ideas. For instance, explaining why a filament bulb emits a continuous spectrum while an LED has a narrow spectrum draws on electron energy levels and wave properties. A model answer would describe: In an LED, electrons lose a fixed amount of energy E_g across the band gap, emitting photons of frequency f = E_g/h, thus nearly monochromatic light. In a filament, electrons are decelerated by collisions producing a range of energies, corresponding to a continuous spread of frequencies.

This type of question tests whether you understand that photon energy is quantised, but the source material determines the energy distribution. The best responses use precise physics terms and avoid ‘light particles’ – stick to ‘photons’.

📚 A-Level CCEA Physics: Electric Fields Key Points | A-Level CCEA

An electric field is a region of space where a charged particle experiences a force. This article covers all essential concepts for the CCEA A-Level Physics specification, including field strength, potential, uniform and radial fields, and particle motion. By mastering these ideas, you will be able to solve exam questions on electrostatics with confidence.

    1. Electric Field & Coulomb’s Law |

An electric field is set up by a charged object. Any other charge placed in this region will experience an electrostatic force. Like charges repel, and opposite charges attract. The direction of the electric field is defined as the direction of the force on a small positive test charge.

Coulomb’s Law quantifies the force between two point charges. The magnitude of the force F is given by F = kQ₁Q₂ / r², where k = 1/(4πε₀) and ε₀ is the permittivity of free space. The force is attractive if the charges are opposite and repulsive if they are alike.

    2. Electric Field Strength |

Electric field strength E at a point is defined as the electrostatic force per unit positive charge. The defining equation is E = F / q, where F is the force on a small test charge q. The SI unit of electric field strength is newton per coulomb (N C⁻¹), which is equivalent to volt per metre (V m⁻¹).

Electric field strength is a vector quantity. For a positive source charge, the field points radially outward; for a negative source charge, it points radially inward. In calculations, always consider the direction determined by the sign of the source charge.

    3. Electric Field Lines | 电场线

Field lines provide a visual representation of the electric field. They start on positive charges and end on negative charges. The density of lines indicates the field strength: closer lines mean a stronger field. Field lines never cross, and their tangent at any point gives the direction of E.

For an isolated point charge, lines are radial. For a pair of opposite charges (a dipole), lines curve from the positive to the negative charge. Between two parallel plates with opposite charges, the field is approximately uniform, so lines are equally spaced and parallel.

    4. Electric Potential Energy | 电势能

Electric potential energy is the work done to bring a charge from infinity to a point in an electric field without any change in kinetic energy. For two point charges Q and q separated by a distance r, the potential energy U is given by U = kQq / r. If the charges have the same sign, U is positive (repulsion); if opposite, U is negative (attraction).

The zero of electric potential energy is taken at infinity. When a charge moves freely in the field, it loses potential energy and gains kinetic energy, provided no other forces act. This energy conversion is very useful when analysing the speed of charged particles.

    5. Electric Potential | 电势

Electric potential V at a point is the work done per unit positive charge in bringing a small test charge from infinity to that point. V = U / q, so the potential due to a point charge Q at distance r is V = kQ / r. The unit is the volt (V), which is equivalent to J C⁻¹.

Potential is a scalar quantity, so the total potential at a point due to multiple charges is the algebraic sum of the individual potentials. Unlike electric field strength, potential does not have a direction. Equipotential surfaces are surfaces with the same potential; field lines are always perpendicular to these surfaces.

    6. Uniform Electric Fields |

A uniform electric field has constant magnitude and direction. The most common example is the field between two parallel conducting plates with equal but opposite charges. The field strength E is related to the potential difference V between the plates and their separation d by E = V / d.

In a uniform field, the equipotential surfaces are parallel planes perpendicular to the field lines. The potential changes linearly with distance in the direction of the field. If a charge q moves a distance d parallel to the field, the work done is W = qEd = qV.

    7. Radial Electric Fields (Point Charges) |

For a point charge Q, the electric field is radial. The magnitude of the field strength at a distance r is E = kQ / r². This follows directly from Coulomb’s law and the definition of E. The field obeys an inverse-square law just like the gravitational field around a point mass.

The potential in a radial field is V = kQ / r. Notice that while E ∝ 1/r², V ∝ 1/r. Both E and V fall off as the distance increases, but V decreases more slowly. The field lines are straight lines radiating outward or inward, and the equipotential surfaces are concentric spheres.

    8. Relationship between E and V |

Electric field strength is the negative gradient of electric potential. In one dimension, E = –dV/dr. For a uniform field this reduces to E = V / d (ignoring sign when only magnitude is considered). The negative sign indicates that E points in the direction of decreasing potential.

对于匀强电场,这简化为 E = V / d(只考虑大小时可忽略负号)。

This relationship is extremely powerful. If you know how V varies with distance, you can find E by differentiation. Conversely, the potential difference between two points is the integral of E along the path: ΔV = –∫E·dr. For a uniform field, ΔV = –Ed.

    9. Motion of Charged Particles in Uniform Fields |

A charged particle in a uniform electric field experiences a constant force F = qE. If the particle moves along the field lines, its acceleration is constant, making it possible to apply the kinematic equations of constant acceleration. This is analogous to a mass in a uniform gravitational field.

When a particle enters a uniform electric field perpendicularly (e.g. between deflecting plates), it follows a parabolic path. The component of velocity parallel to the plates remains constant, while the perpendicular component increases linearly due to the electric force. This projectile-type motion is the basis of cathode ray tubes and particle accelerators.

For an electron of charge e moving through a potential difference V, the work done by the field is eV. This equals the gain in kinetic energy ½mv², so the speed v = √(2eV/m). This formula is vital for electron gun calculations.

    10. Comparison with Gravitational Fields |

Electric fields and gravitational fields share many mathematical similarities, but they also have key differences. Both follow inverse-square laws for point sources, and both have related potentials (V ∝ 1/r for electric, V_g ∝ 1/r for gravitational). Field strength is force per unit property: E = F/q, g = F/m.

    • Electric forces can be attractive or repulsive; gravitational forces are always attractive.

    • Electric field lines start and end on charges; gravitational field lines only point towards masses.

    • Gravitational potential is always negative; electric potential can be positive or negative depending on the source charge.

Despite these differences, the problem-solving strategies are very similar. Once you are confident with electric fields, you can tackle gravitational fields using the same logic, which is a great advantage in CCEA A-Level Physics.

    📚 A-Level Physics: June 2018 Insert 2 Formula Derivations | A-Level

In the June 2018 AQA A-level Physics examination, Insert 2 provided a handy reference of essential formulae covering mechanics, waves, fields, nuclear physics and thermal physics. However, simply memorising them is not enough; understanding their derivations sharpens problem-solving skills and deepens physical insight. This article walks you through the derivations of eight key formulas from that insert, pairing each step in English and Chinese to aid bilingual learners.

    1. Centripetal Acceleration: a = v²/r | 向心加速度 a = v²/r 推导

Consider an object moving at constant speed v along a circular path of radius r. Although its speed is constant, the direction of velocity changes continuously, resulting in an acceleration towards the centre.

In a short time interval Δt, the object moves from point A to point B, covering an arc length Δs = vΔt. The corresponding angle Δθ = Δs/r. Draw the velocity vectors at A and B; they have equal magnitude v but different directions, separated by the same angle Δθ.

The change in velocity Δv is the vector difference v_B – v_A. The triangle formed by the velocity vectors is similar to the triangle OAB, so Δv/v = Δs/r. Then the magnitude of acceleration is a = Δv/Δt = (v/r)(Δs/Δt) = v²/r, directed towards the centre.

    📚 Mastering Formula Derivations from A-Level Physics Paper 4 (June 2019) | 精通A-Level物理Paper 4 (2019年6月) 公式推导

Understanding how to derive key formulas is essential for success in A-Level Physics Paper 4. The June 2019 examiner report highlighted that many students lost marks not because they couldn’t recall equations, but because they could not demonstrate a clear logical path from fundamental principles to the final expression. Topics such as circular motion, gravitational fields, simple harmonic motion, capacitor circuits, and electromagnetic induction all require confident derivations. This article revisits those derivations step by step, pairing each English explanation with its Chinese equivalent, so you can master both the language and the logic.

    1. Centripetal Acceleration: From Velocity Vector to a = v²/r | 向心加速度:从速度矢量到 a = v²/r

Consider an object moving at constant speed v in a circle of radius r. In a short time Δt, its position vector sweeps an angle Δθ, and the velocity vector, always tangential, also rotates through the same angle Δθ. The change in velocity Δv is the base of an isosceles triangle formed by two velocity vectors of magnitude v separated by angle Δθ.

For small Δθ, Δv ≈ vΔθ. The acceleration magnitude a is |Δv/Δt| ≈ v(Δθ/Δt). Since angular speed ω = Δθ/Δt and v = ωr, we obtain a = vω = v(v/r) = v²/r. The direction of Δv points towards the centre of the circle, giving centripetal acceleration a = v²/r along the radius inward.

    对于很小的 Δθ,Δv ≈ vΔθ。加速度大小 a = |Δv/Δt| ≈ v(Δθ/Δt)。由于角速度 ω = Δθ/Δt 且 v = ωr,我们得到 a = vω = v(v/r) = v²/r。Δv 的方向指向圆心,因此向心加速度 a = v²/r,方向沿半径向内。

    a = v²/r = ω²r

    2. Deriving v = ωr and Periodic Time Relations | 推导 v = ωr 及周期关系

Angular speed ω is defined as the rate of change of angle: ω = Δθ/Δt. For one complete revolution, Δθ = 2π radians and the time taken is the period T, so ω = 2π/T. The linear distance covered in one revolution is the circumference 2πr, so the constant speed v = distance/time = 2πr/T.

    角速度 ω 定义为角度的变化率:ω = Δθ/Δt。对于一整圈,Δθ = 2π 弧度,所用时间为周期 T,因此 ω = 2π/T。一圈内通过的直线距离是周长 2πr,所以匀速速率 v = 距离/时间 = 2πr/T。

    Combining v = 2πr/T and ω = 2π/T gives v = ωr. Frequency f = 1/T, so we also have the very useful forms ω = 2πf and v = 2πfr. Students often confuse T and f in exam pressure; the June 2019 report noted many misplaced 2π factors.

    结合 v = 2πr/T 和 ω = 2π/T 得到 v = ωr。频率 f = 1/T,因此我们还有非常有用的形式 ω = 2πf 和 v = 2πfr。考生常在考试压力下混淆 T 和 f;2019 年 6 月报告指出许多学生错放了 2π 因子。

    v = ωr    ω = 2πf    T = 1/f

    3. Gravitational Field Strength g = GM/r² | 引力场强度 g = GM/r²

Newton’s law of gravitation states that the force between two point masses M and m separated by distance r is F = GMm/r². The gravitational field strength g at a point is the force per unit mass on a small test mass placed at that point: g = F/m.

Substituting F = GMm/r² gives g = (GMm/r²)/m = GM/r². This derivation is straightforward, yet the examiner report highlights that candidates often write g = GM/r without the square, or incorrectly apply the formula for points inside a planet. Remember this applies outside a spherical mass.

    代入 F = GMm/r² 得到 g = (GMm/r²)/m = GM/r²。此推导很简单,但考官报告强调,考生经常写成 g = GM/r 而没有平方,或者在行星内部的点错误地应用该公式。记住这适用于球体外部。

    g = GM/r²

    4. From Newton’s Law to Kepler’s Third Law | 从牛顿定律推导开普勒第三定律

For a planet of mass m orbiting a star of mass M in a circular orbit of radius r, gravitational force provides the centripetal force: GMm/r² = mv²/r. Cancel m and one power of r: GM/r = v². Replace v with 2πr/T using the periodic relation: GM/r = (2πr/T)² = 4π²r²/T².

Rearrange to group r terms: T² = (4π²/GM) r³. This is Kepler’s Third Law: T² ∝ r³ with the constant of proportionality depending on the central mass M. In June 2019, some students lost marks by using r for two different quantities or failing to show clear algebraic rearrangement.

    重组 r 项:T² = (4π²/GM) r³。这就是开普勒第三定律:T² ∝ r³,比例常数取决于中心质量 M。2019 年 6 月,一些学生因对两个不同量使用 r 或未展示清晰代数变换而失分。

    T² = (4π²/GM) r³

    5. Simple Harmonic Motion: Deriving a = – ω²x | 简谐运动:推导 a = -ω²x

An oscillation is simple harmonic if the acceleration is directly proportional to displacement from the equilibrium position and is always directed towards it. For a mass-spring system, Hooke’s law gives F = -kx, and Newton’s second law gives F = ma, so ma = -kx, thus a = -(k/m)x. Defining ω² = k/m yields a = -ω²x.

定义 ω² = k/m 即得 a = -ω²x。

The minus sign is crucial; the June 2019 report noted that candidates often omitted it, leading to a misunderstanding of phase. More generally, the solution of this differential equation gives the displacement x = A sin(ωt) or x = A cos(ωt), where A is amplitude.

    负号至关重要;2019 年 6 月报告指出考生常遗漏负号,导致对相位的误解。一般地,这个微分方程的解给出位移 x = A sin(ωt) 或 x = A cos(ωt),其中 A 为振幅。

    a = -ω²x

    6. Energy in SHM: Kinetic and Potential Expressions | 简谐运动的能量:动能与势能表达式

Starting from x = A cos(ωt), the velocity is v = dx/dt = -Aω sin(ωt). The maximum speed vₘₐₓ = ωA occurs as the oscillator passes through equilibrium. Kinetic energy Eₖ = ½mv² = ½m ω²A² sin²(ωt).

    从 x = A cos(ωt) 出发,速度为 v = dx/dt = -Aω sin(ωt)。 动能 Eₖ = ½mv² = ½m ω²A² sin²(ωt)。

Potential energy for a spring system is Eₚ = ½kx² = ½m ω²x², because k = m ω². Using x = A cos(ωt), Eₚ = ½m ω²A² cos²(ωt). The total mechanical energy Eₜₒₜ = Eₖ + Eₚ = ½m ω²A² (sin² + cos²) = ½m ω²A², which is constant.

利用 x = A cos(ωt),Eₚ = ½m ω²A² cos²(ωt)。 Eₜₒₜ = Eₖ + Eₚ = ½m ω²A² (sin² + cos²) = ½m ω²A²,是守恒的。

This derivation shows that energy is proportional to the square of amplitude, a favourite exam question. Many candidates forget to link k and m ω².

Eₜₒₜ = ½mω²A²    vₘₐₓ = ωA

    7. Capacitor Discharge: Exponential Decay Derivation |

    When a capacitor C discharges through a resistor R, the current I = dq/dt, and the p.d. across the capacitor V = q/C. By Kirchhoff’s voltage law, V = IR, so q/C = -R dq/dt (negative because charge decreases). Rearranging gives dq/dt = -q/(RC).

    当电容器 C 通过电阻 R 放电时,电流 I = dq/dt,电容器两端电压 V = q/C。由基尔霍夫电压定律,V = IR,所以 q/C = -R dq/dt(负号因为电荷减少)。整理得 dq/dt = -q/(RC)。

    Separating variables and integrating from t=0 (q=Q₀) to t=t (q=q): ∫(1/q)dq = -∫(1/RC)dt → ln(q/Q₀) = -t/RC. Taking exponentials yields q = Q₀ e^(-t/RC). The product RC is the time constant τ. Similarly, I = I₀ e^(-t/RC) and V = V₀ e^(-t/RC).

    分离变量并从 t=0 (q=Q₀) 积分到 t=t (q=q):∫(1/q)dq = -∫(1/RC)dt → ln(q/Q₀) = -t/RC。两边取指数得 q = Q₀ e^(-t/RC)。乘积 RC 是时间常数 τ。类似地,I = I₀ e^(-t/RC) 以及 V = V₀ e^(-t/RC)。

    q = Q₀ e^(-t/RC)

    8. Time Constant τ = RC and Its Significance | 时间常数 τ = RC 及其意义

The time constant τ = RC has units: ohm × farad = (V/A) × (C/V) = C/A = second. After t = τ, the charge on the capacitor has fallen to Q₀ e⁻¹ ≈ 0.37 Q₀, i.e. about 37% of its original value. The current also decays to 37% of its initial value in one time constant.

    时间常数 τ = RC 的单位为:欧姆 × 法拉 = (V/A) × (C/V) = C/A = 秒。

In a charging circuit, the p.d. across the capacitor rises as V = V₀(1 – e^(-t/RC)). After one time constant, it reaches about 63% of the supply voltage. Examiners expect you to derive either discharge or charge equations, and to relate the gradient of ln(V) vs time graphs to -1/RC.

    在充电电路中,电容器两端电压按 V = V₀(1 – e^(-t/RC)) 上升。经过一个时间常数后,电压达到约电源电压的 63%。考官期望你能推导放电或充电方程,并能将 ln(V) 对时间图的斜率与 -1/RC 联系起来。

    τ = RC

    9. Magnetic Flux Linkage and Induced e.m.f. | 磁链与感应电动势

Magnetic flux Φ = BA cosθ, where B is magnetic flux density, A is area, and θ is the angle between the field and the normal to the area. Flux linkage NΦ is the product of the number of turns N and the flux through each turn. Faraday’s law states that the magnitude of induced e.m.f. is equal to the rate of change of flux linkage: ε = – d(NΦ)/dt.

For a coil rotating uniformly in a magnetic field, Φ = BA cos(ωt), where ω is angular speed. Then ε = -N d(BA cosωt)/dt = NBAω sin(ωt), giving an alternating e.m.f. with peak value ε₀ = NBAω. The June 2019 paper frequently tested this derivation with attention to the correct differentiation of cosine.

    对于在磁场中匀速旋转的线圈,Φ = BA cos(ωt),其中 ω 为角速度。那么 ε = -N d(BA cosωt)/dt = NBAω sin(ωt),产生峰值 ε₀ = NBAω 的交变电动势。2019 年 6 月试卷频繁考查这个推导,关注对余弦函数正确求导。

    ε₀ = NBAω

    10. Transformer Equation Derivation (Ideal Transformer) | 理想变压器公式推导

An ideal transformer has two coils wound on a common iron core, with no flux leakage and no power loss. The alternating flux Φ in the core links both primary and secondary coils. Using Faraday’s law: εₚ = -Nₚ dΦ/dt and εₛ = -Nₛ dΦ/dt. Taking magnitudes, εₚ/εₛ = Nₚ/Nₛ.

Since power input equals power output for an ideal transformer, Iₚ Vₚ = Iₛ Vₛ. Combining with the turns ratio, we obtain Iₛ/Iₚ = Nₚ/Nₛ. Many candidates stumble by mixing up the step-up and step-down current relationship; the report warned against blindly applying formulas without reasoning.

结合匝数比,可得 Iₛ/Iₚ = Nₚ/Nₛ。

    Vₛ/Vₚ = Nₛ/Nₚ    Iₛ/Iₚ = Nₚ/Nₛ

    11. Deriving Root Mean Square (RMS) for Alternating Current |

For an alternating current I = I₀ sin(ωt), the heating effect depends on I². The mean power dissipated in a resistor R is ⟨P⟩ = ⟨I²R⟩ = I₀² R ⟨sin²(ωt)⟩. Over one complete cycle, the average value of sin²(ωt) is ½, so ⟨P⟩ = ½ I₀² R.

    对于交变电流 I = I₀ sin(ωt),热效应取决于 I²。在电阻 R 上消耗的平均功率为 ⟨P⟩ = ⟨I²R⟩ = I₀² R ⟨sin²(ωt)⟩。

The rms current I_rms is defined as the direct current that would dissipate the same average power: I_rms² R = ½ I₀² R ⇒ I_rms = I₀/√2. Similarly, V_rms = V₀/√2. The June 2019 report commented that some students incorrectly used I_rms = I₀/2, losing easy marks.

    有效值电流 I_rms 定义为能产生相同平均功率的直流电流值:I_rms² R = ½ I₀² R ⇒ I_rms = I₀/√2。类似地,V_rms = V₀/√2。2019 年 6 月报告提到,部分学生错误地使用了 I_rms = I₀/2,丢掉了很容易的分数。

    I_rms = I₀/√2    V_rms = V₀/√2

    12. Common Pitfalls from the June 2019 Paper 4 Report | 2019年6月Paper 4报告中的常见错误

The examiner report highlighted specific mistakes that compromised formula derivations. Students often inserted numerical values before completing the algebraic derivation, making it impossible to follow the logic. In circular motion, forgetting that centripetal force is a resultant, not a separate force, led to double-counting. During SHM derivations, the phase relationship between displacement, velocity and acceleration was frequently described incorrectly; velocity leads displacement by π/2 and acceleration is π out of phase with displacement.

Furthermore, in capacitor circuits, candidates confused the charge and voltage decay equations with charging equations, or misapplied the time constant. When dealing with flux linkage, many failed to include the factor N or misidentified the angle in BA cosθ. In AC theory, the factor √2 was often misplaced, and the idea of average power over a cycle was poorly understood. The key takeaway is that a thorough, step-by-step derivation with clear annotation of symbols is the safest route to full marks.

📚 Mastering Formula Derivation for AS Physics PH02: Insights from the June 2022 Examiner Report | 掌握AS物理PH02公式推导:2022年6月考官报告解析

The AQA AS Physics Unit 2 (PH02) examination challenges students not only to recall formulae but to demonstrate a clear, logical derivation of key relationships. The June 2022 examiner report highlighted that many candidates lost marks by skipping logical steps, misusing vectors, or failing to state underlying principles. This article uses those insights to build a detailed revision guide on the essential formula derivations for PH02, presented in a side‑by‑side bilingual format to strengthen both understanding and exam technique.

    1. What Examiners Look For in Derivations |

Examiners expect a sequence that begins with a fundamental law or definition, moves through algebraic manipulation, and ends with the target formula. Every step must be justified, and diagrams or sign conventions must be explicitly linked to the mathematics. The June 2022 report noted that candidates often wrote final equations without showing substitution or rearrangement, losing method marks.

    • Always state the starting physics principle (e.g., Newton’s second law, conservation of energy). /
    • Define all symbols before using them.
    • Include small remarks like “assuming constant acceleration” to show awareness of limitations. / 添加如“假设加速度恒定”的简短备注以体现对限制条件的认识。

    2. Deriving the SUVAT Equations from Definitions | 从定义出发推导运动学方程

    Start with the definition of acceleration: a = (v − u)/t, assuming constant a. Rearranging gives v = u + at. For displacement, use average velocity: s = ½(u + v) t. Substituting v yields s = ut + ½at². Squaring v = u + at and combining with s = ½(u + v) t eliminates t to give v² = u² + 2as. These steps were frequently jumbled in the exam, with many candidates failing to justify the use of average velocity.

    从加速度定义出发:a = (v − u)/t,假设加速度恒定。整理得 v = u + at。求位移时,利用平均速度:s = ½(u + v) t。代入 v 得到 s = ut + ½at²。将 v = u + at 平方并与 s = ½(u + v) t 联立消去 t,即得 v² = u² + 2as。考试中这些步骤常被混淆,许多考生未能解释为何使用平均速度。

    s = ½ (u + v) t → s = ut + ½at² → v² = u² + 2as

    3. Deriving Conservation of Momentum from Newton’s Laws | 从牛顿定律推导动量守恒

Consider two bodies A and B interacting. According to Newton’s third law, the force F_AB on A by B is equal and opposite to F_BA on B by A. Apply Newton’s second law in impulse form: F = Δp/Δt. Thus, Δp_A = F_AB Δt and Δp_B = F_BA Δt = −F_AB Δt. Adding, Δp_A + Δp_B = 0, so total momentum p_A + p_B is constant. The examiner reported that candidates often omitted the step linking equal forces to equal and opposite changes in momentum.

因此,Δp_A = F_AB Δt,Δp_B = F_BA Δt = −F_AB Δt。

    4. Deriving Centripetal Acceleration a = v²/r |

For an object moving at constant speed v in a circle of radius r, consider a small time interval Δt. The change in velocity Δv points toward the centre, and its magnitude is approximately v Δθ, where Δθ = vΔt / r. Hence Δv ≈ (v²Δt)/r. Acceleration a = Δv/Δt gives a = v²/r directed radially inward. Many candidates in June 2022 lost credit by not mentioning the vector nature of velocity change or failing to explain why Δv is perpendicular to v in the limit.

    对于以恒定速率 v 在半径 r 的圆周上运动的物体,取一小段时间 Δt。速度的变化量 Δv 指向圆心,大小约为 v Δθ,其中 Δθ = vΔt / r。因此 Δv ≈ (v²Δt)/r。加速度 a = Δv/Δt 即得 a = v²/r,方向径向向里。2022年6月考试中许多考生因未提及速度变化的矢量性或未解释为何 Δv 在极限下垂直于 v 而失分。

    Δv = v Δθ = v (vΔt/r) → a = v²/r

    5. Deriving the Young Modulus Equation | 杨氏模量公式推导

The Young modulus E is defined as tensile stress divided by tensile strain: E = (F/A) / (ΔL/L) = FL/(AΔL). A derivation question may require you to start from the definitions of stress and strain and rearrange to show that E can be determined from the gradient of a force‑extension graph multiplied by L/A. Examiners noted that students sometimes confused original length with extension, so they advised clear labelling of L and ΔL.

    杨氏模量 E 的定义是拉伸应力除以拉伸应变:E = (F/A) / (ΔL/L) = FL/(AΔL)。推导题可能要求从应力和应变的定义出发,通过变形证明 E 可由力‑伸长量图线的斜率乘以 L/A 求得。考官指出学生有时混淆原长与伸长量,因此建议清楚标注 L 和 ΔL。

    E = (F/A) ÷ (ΔL/L) → F = (EA/L) ΔL

    6. Deriving Snell’s Law from Wave Speed | 从波速推导折射定律

When a plane wave crosses a boundary between two media, the frequency f remains constant. The wave speed v = fλ. Using the geometry of wavefronts, the angle of incidence θ₁ and refraction θ₂ are related to the wavelengths: sinθ₁ = λ₁/d and sinθ₂ = λ₂/d for the same wavefront separation d. Since λ₁ = v₁/f and λ₂ = v₂/f, we get sinθ₁/sinθ₂ = v₁/v₂. Introducing refractive index n₁ = c/v₁ and n₂ = c/v₂ yields n₁ sinθ₁ = n₂ sinθ₂. The report highlighted that many candidates skipped the link to wavefront geometry and lost marks.

波速 v = fλ。 又因 λ₁ = v₁/f、λ₂ = v₂/f,故 sinθ₁/sinθ₂ = v₁/v₂。

    7. Deriving Path Difference for Single‑Slit Diffraction Minima |

For a single slit of width a, divide the slit into two halves. Waves from a point in the top half destructively interfere with those from a corresponding point a/2 below if the path difference is λ/2. The angle θ to the first minimum satisfies (a/2) sinθ = λ/2, giving a sinθ = λ. Generalising to pairs of points yields a sinθ = nλ for n = 1, 2, 3… The 2022 report noted that candidates often omitted the reasoning behind dividing the slit, instead jumping to the final formula.

第一极小角度 θ 满足 (a/2) sinθ = λ/2,即 a sinθ = λ。

    a sinθ = nλ (minima)

    8. Deriving Double‑Slit Fringe Spacing Δx = λD/d |

For two slits separated by d, the path difference to a bright fringe at angle θ is d sinθ. For small angles, sinθ ≈ tanθ ≈ y/D, where y is the distance from the central maximum and D is the slit‑to‑screen distance. Constructive interference occurs when d sinθ = nλ, so y_n = nλD/d. The fringe spacing Δx = y_{n+1} − y_n = λD/d. The June 2022 examiner report reminded teachers to stress the small‑angle approximation, as many candidates incorrectly applied it for large θ.

    对于相距 d 的双缝,到亮纹方向的光程差为 d sinθ。小角度下 sinθ ≈ tanθ ≈ y/D,其中 y 为距中央明纹的距离,D 为缝与屏间距。相长干涉条件为 d sinθ = nλ,故 y_n = nλD/d。条纹间距 Δx = y_{n+1} − y_n = λD/d。2022年6月的考官报告提醒教师强调小角近似,因为许多考生在较大角度下仍错误使用这一近似。

    Δx = λD / d

    9. Deriving Kinetic Energy from Work Done | 从做功推导动能

Starting with the work‑energy principle, net work done W = F s. Using Newton’s second law F = ma and the kinematic equation v² = u² + 2as, eliminating s gives W = m (v² − u²)/2. Defining kinetic energy E_k = ½mv², the work done equals the change in kinetic energy. The report pointed out that candidates often used the final formula without linking it to the work done, losing the derivation marks.

    从功能原理出发,合外力做的功 W = F s。运用牛顿第二定律 F = ma 及运动学方程 v² = u² + 2as,消去 s 得 W = m (v² − u²)/2。定义动能 E_k = ½mv²,则合外力做功等于动能的变化量。报告指出,考生常直接使用最终公式而未与做功相联系,丢掉推导分数。

    W = Fs = ma × (v² − u²)/2a = ½mv² − ½mu²

    10. Common Pitfalls and Examiner Recommendations | 常见错误与考官建议

Based on the June 2022 PH02 report, the most frequent errors were: failing to state the assumptions (e.g., constant acceleration, small angles), confusing scalars and vectors, not showing intermediate algebraic steps, and mismatching units. Examiners recommended practicing derivations with a focus on step‑by‑step logic, using annotated diagrams, and always concluding with the target formula neatly boxed.

Pitfall / 错误 Why it costs marks / 为何失分 How to avoid / 如何避免
Skipping the initial principle / 省略初始原理 No anchor for the derivation / 缺乏推导依据 Always write the defining equation first / 始终先写定义方程
Use a clear sign convention and stick to it / 采用明确的符号约定并一以贯之

Derivation questions are an opportunity to display full mastery of the physics behind the equations. By internalising the logical flow from principle to formula and heeding the feedback from the June 2022 PH02 examiner report, you can transform a challenging task into a reliable source of marks. Practice writing out each derivation repeatedly, and you will soon find that the steps become second nature.

📚 Newton’s Laws for IB Edexcel Physics: Key Exam Points |

Newton’s laws of motion form the foundation of classical mechanics and are essential for solving a wide range of problems in IB and Edexcel Physics. This article breaks down the key exam points, provides clear explanations, and highlights common pitfalls to help you achieve top marks. We will move from the three core laws through free body diagrams, friction, tension, momentum, and circular motion, ensuring every concept is linked directly to typical test questions.

    1. Newton’s First Law: Inertia |

An object at rest stays at rest, and an object in motion stays in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced external force. This property of matter is called inertia. In an exam, you must state that the net force is zero for an object moving at constant velocity – do not assume zero net force means the object is stationary.

Inertia depends only on mass, not on velocity. Multiple‑choice questions often try to trick you by saying ‘a heavier object has more inertia because it moves faster’. Remember: inertia is a measure of the resistance to change in motion, solely determined by mass.

    2. Newton’s Second Law: Net Force and Acceleration |

The acceleration of an object is directly proportional to the net force acting on it and inversely proportional to its mass. The formula is written as:

    物体的加速度与作用在它上面的合外力成正比,与物体的质量成反比。公式写作:

    ΣF = ma

Here ΣF is the vector sum of all forces. Always begin by identifying all forces acting on a single object, then resolve or sum them vectorially. The IB data booklet gives F = ma; remember this is the net force.

Common exam applications include: using a = (v – u) / t from kinematics together with ΣF = ma to find braking forces, tension in accelerating connected bodies, or forces on inclined planes. Always keep mass constant in standard problems – if mass varies, use the momentum form (see later).

    3. Newton’s Third Law: Action-Reaction Pairs |

If body A exerts a force on body B, then body B exerts an equal and opposite force on body A. These forces are of the same type (e.g. both gravitational, both contact) and act on different bodies. Never draw them on the same free body diagram for one object.

Typical mistake: stating that the normal force and weight are an action‑reaction pair. They act on the same object and are not necessarily equal when the object is accelerating vertically. The true reaction to weight is the gravitational pull of the object on the Earth.

    4. Free Body Diagrams (FBD) |

A correct FBD shows a dot or box representing the object, with vector arrows for every force acting on that object alone. Common forces: weight (mg, vertically down), normal reaction (perpendicular to surface), tension (along string away from object), friction (parallel to surface, opposing motion or impending motion), and applied forces.

Always draw the weight arrow starting from the centre of mass. For inclined planes, tilt your diagram or resolve weight into components parallel and perpendicular to the slope. IB mark schemes frequently award marks for clearly labelled forces and correct direction of arrows.

    5. Resolving Forces and Components |

When forces act at angles, replace them with perpendicular components – usually horizontal and vertical, or parallel and perpendicular to a slope. Use trigonometry: a force F at angle θ to the horizontal has components F cosθ (horizontal) and F sinθ (vertical).

    Key skills to practise:

    • Writing equilibrium conditions: ΣF_horizontal = 0, ΣF_vertical = 0.
    • For accelerating systems, setting ΣF = ma in each relevant direction.
    • Resolving weight on a slope: component down the slope = mg sinθ, component into the slope = mg cosθ.

    6. Friction: Static and Kinetic |

Friction is a contact force that opposes sliding. Static friction applies when there is no relative motion; its value varies from zero up to a maximum f_s,max = μ_s R, where R is the normal reaction. Kinetic (dynamic) friction acts during sliding and is constant: f_k = μ_k R. Usually μ_s > μ_k.

When an object is on the point of moving, static friction is at its maximum. Many problems ask for the coefficient of friction or the angle of an incline at which slipping begins. In those cases set f_s = μ_s R and solve with equilibrium or Newton’s second law.

    7. Tension and Connected Bodies |

When two or more bodies are connected by a light inextensible string, the string has the same tension throughout (assuming a frictionless pulley). Analyse each mass separately: draw an FBD, then write ΣF = ma for each. The velocity constraint is usually that the magnitudes of the accelerations are equal.

For example, in an Atwood machine (two masses over a pulley), you can write m₁g – T = m₁a and T – m₂g = m₂a. Add the equations to eliminate T and solve for a: a = (m₁ – m₂)g / (m₁ + m₂). Always check that your predicted direction of acceleration matches the net force direction.

    例如在阿特伍德机(两个质量块经滑轮相连)中,可列出 m₁g – T = m₁a 和 T – m₂g = m₂a。两式相加消去 T 求得加速度:a = (m₁ – m₂)g / (m₁ + m₂)。

    8. Apparent Weight and Elevator Problems |

Apparent weight is the normal force you feel from a supporting surface. In an accelerating elevator, the reading on a scale changes: when accelerating upward, normal force N = m(g + a), so you feel heavier; when accelerating downward, N = m(g – a), feeling lighter. If a = g downward, N = 0 – apparent weightlessness.

Always define a positive direction, draw the FBD, and apply ΣF = ma. Never assume N = mg. If the elevator moves at constant velocity, then a = 0 and N = mg, so apparent weight equals true weight.

    9. Inclined Planes |

For an object on a smooth inclined plane, the only force along the slope is the component of weight: mg sinθ, so acceleration a = g sinθ. With friction, the net force becomes mg sinθ – f, and f = μ R with R = mg cosθ. Many exam questions ask for the acceleration or the coefficient of friction when the object slides at constant speed.

For static equilibrium on a slope, mg sinθ = f_s and f_s ≤ μ_s mg cosθ, which leads to tanθ ≤ μ_s. This is a classic result for the angle of repose. Make sure you can derive it from first principles.

    10. Momentum and Impulse (Newton’s Second Law in Momentum Form) |

Newton’s second law can be expressed using momentum p = mv: ΣF = Δp / Δt. This is especially useful when mass changes (e.g. rocket motion) or in collision and impulse calculations. Impulse J = F Δt = Δp, equivalent to the area under a force–time graph.

In IB, you may be asked to calculate the impulse from a graph, or to use F = Δp/Δt to find the average force during a collision. Remember that impulse is a vector quantity; direction matters. Conservation of momentum in isolated systems is a direct consequence of Newton’s third law.

    11. Circular Motion and Centripetal Force |

An object moving in a circle at constant speed experiences a centripetal acceleration directed towards the centre: a = v²/r = rω². The net force providing this acceleration is the centripetal force: F = mv²/r = mrω². This is not a new force but the result of gravity, tension, friction, or normal force.

Common scenarios: a car rounding a banked curve, a mass on a string moving in a horizontal circle, and orbital motion. Always draw an FBD pointing the centripetal force direction and equate the net radial force to mv²/r. For vertical circles, energy conservation often combines with radial force equations.

    12. Common Misconceptions and Exam Tips |

    • Force causes motion: Many students think a constant force produces constant velocity. Correct: a net force produces acceleration, not constant speed.
    • Action‑reaction balanced forces: They never cancel because they act on different bodies.
    • Mass vs. weight: Use m for mass (kg), mg for weight (N). In space, weight changes but mass does not.
    • Forgetting to convert units: Always work in SI (kg, m, s, N). Convert grams to kilograms, cm to m, etc.
    • Sign conventions: Establish a coordinate system before writing equations, especially on inclined planes and connected bodies.
    • Exam technique: Read the question carefully – is the system in equilibrium or accelerating? If acceleration is asked, you likely need Newton’s second law. If forces are balanced, use equilibrium conditions.

📚 Energy Levels and Spectra for CIE A-Level Physics | 能级与光谱 CIE A-Level 物理考点精讲

Welcome to this focused revision guide on energy levels and spectra, a key topic in CIE A-Level Physics. Mastering this area not only helps you tackle quantum physics questions but also deepens your understanding of how light and matter interact at the atomic scale. In this article, we will break down the essential concepts, equations, and exam techniques you need to excel.

    1. Introduction to Energy Levels |

In an atom, electrons cannot have any arbitrary amount of energy. Instead, they are restricted to specific, discrete energy levels. The lowest energy state is called the ground state, and any higher energy state is an excited state. This idea is fundamental to quantum theory and explains why atoms emit or absorb light only at certain wavelengths.

Energy levels are often represented by horizontal lines on an energy-level diagram, with energy increasing upwards. The ground state is at the bottom, and excited states are above it. The difference between two levels corresponds to the energy of a photon that can be emitted or absorbed.

    2. Quantisation of Energy |

The quantisation of energy means that an electron can only gain or lose energy in fixed amounts, equal to the difference between two allowed energy levels. This is described by the equation ΔE = hf, where ΔE is the energy change, h is Planck’s constant (6.63 × 10⁻³⁴ J s), and f is the frequency of the photon involved.

    能量量子化意味着电子只能以固定的能量份获得或失去能量,这个能量份等于两个允许能级之间的差值。这由方程式 ΔE = hf 描述,其中 ΔE 是能量变化量,h 是普朗克常数(6.63 × 10⁻³⁴ J·s),f 是所涉及光子的频率。

    ΔE = hf

If an electron jumps from a higher level to a lower one, it emits a photon of energy ΔE. If it absorbs a photon of exactly the right energy, it can jump to a higher level. This is the origin of line spectra.

    3. Photon Emission and Absorption |

Emission occurs when an excited electron falls back to a lower energy state, releasing a photon. The photon’s frequency is given by f = ΔE / h. Since ΔE is fixed for each transition, the emitted light has a specific frequency, producing a bright line in an emission spectrum.

Absorption is the opposite process: an electron absorbs a photon and moves to a higher energy level. The photon must have exactly the energy matching the gap. If white light passes through a cool gas, the gas absorbs these specific frequencies, creating dark lines in the otherwise continuous spectrum — this is an absorption spectrum.

    4. The Hydrogen Spectrum |

The simplest atomic spectrum is that of hydrogen. Its emission spectrum consists of several distinct series of lines, each corresponding to transitions down to a particular lower energy level. The visible lines belong to the Balmer series, where electrons fall to the n = 2 level.

The energy levels of hydrogen are given by the formula Eₙ = -13.6 / n² eV, where n is the principal quantum number (n = 1, 2, 3, …). Negative values indicate that the electron is bound to the nucleus; zero energy corresponds to ionisation.

    氢原子的能级由公式 Eₙ = -13.6 / n² eV 给出,其中 n 为主量子数(n = 1, 2, 3, …)。负值表示电子被束缚在原子核附近;零能量对应电离。

    Eₙ = -13.6 / n² eV

    5. Series in Hydrogen Spectrum | 氢光谱线系

Different series of hydrogen lines are named according to the final energy level of the electron transition. The Lyman series (n → 1) lies in the ultraviolet region, the Balmer series (n → 2) is in the visible and near-UV, the Paschen series (n → 3) is in the infrared, and so on. Each series has a limit corresponding to n = ∞, which gives the ionisation energy from that initial level.

    Series Final Level Region
    Lyman n = 1 Ultraviolet
    Balmer n = 2 Visible / UV
    Paschen n = 3 Infrared
    Brackett n = 4 Infrared
    Pfund n = 5 Infrared

    6. Line Spectra vs Continuous Spectra |

A continuous spectrum contains all wavelengths (colours) with no gaps, produced by hot, dense objects like the filament of an incandescent lamp or the Sun’s

  • IGCSE AQA Physics: Electric Fields – Key Revision Points | IGCSE AQA

📚 IGCSE AQA Physics: Electric Fields – Key Revision Points | IGCSE AQA

In IGCSE AQA Physics, electric fields may seem abstract, but they are crucial for understanding static electricity, electrostatic forces, and countless real-world applications. This revision guide distils the essential concepts you need to master for your exam, from how charges create fields to how we use and manage static electricity safely.

    1. Electric Charge Basics |

All matter contains positive protons and negative electrons. An object becomes charged when it gains or loses electrons. If it loses electrons, it gains an overall positive charge; if it gains electrons, it becomes negatively charged. Charge is measured in coulombs (C).

Like charges repel each other, and unlike charges attract. This fundamental rule governs all electrostatic phenomena and electric field interactions.

    2. Conductors, Insulators, and Charging by Friction |

Conductors (such as metals) allow electrons to flow freely through them because they have delocalised electrons. Insulators (such as plastic or glass) hold onto their electrons tightly, so charge cannot move easily. Only insulators can be charged by friction because any transferred electrons stay put on the surface.

When two insulators are rubbed together, electrons are transferred from one to the other. The material that gains electrons becomes negatively charged, while the one that loses electrons becomes positively charged. A common exam example is rubbing a polythene rod with a duster: electrons move from the duster to the rod, leaving the rod negative and the duster positive.

    3. The Concept of an Electric Field |

An electric field is a region around a charged object where it can exert a non-contact force on another charged object. The field exists whether or not a second charge is present. This force can be attractive or repulsive depending on the sign of the charges involved.

The direction of an electric field is defined as the direction a small positive test charge would move if placed in the field. So field lines point away from positive charges and towards negative charges.

For your IGCSE AQA exam, you must understand that electric fields explain how charged objects can attract or repel each other without touching, and how sparks can jump across gaps.

    4. Electric Field Lines | 电场线

Electric field lines are a way to represent electric fields visually. They show the direction of the force on a positive charge, and their spacing indicates the field strength: closer lines mean a stronger field. Field lines never cross each other.

When drawing field lines, arrows must be included to show direction. For an isolated charged sphere, the lines radiate outwards if the sphere is positive, and inwards if negative. Ensure you can sketch these patterns accurately under exam conditions.

    5. Electric Field Around a Point Charge |

A point charge produces a radial electric field. For a positive point charge, the field lines are straight lines pointing radially outward. For a negative point charge, the lines point radially inward. The density of lines decreases as you move away from the charge, showing that the field gets weaker with distance.

In IGCSE AQA Physics, you may be asked to describe how the force between two charges changes if you increase their separation. You should link this to the spread of field lines: at greater distances, fewer lines pass through a given area, so the field is weaker and the force is smaller.

    6. Uniform Electric Fields Between Parallel Plates |

When two oppositely charged parallel metal plates are placed close together, a uniform electric field is produced between them. The field lines are straight, parallel, and equally spaced, pointing from the positive plate to the negative plate.

The strength of a uniform field remains constant at all points between the plates (away from the edges). A charged particle moving in a uniform electric field experiences a constant force in the direction of the field if it is positive, or opposite if it is negative.

You may be expected to draw this pattern and compare it with the radial field of a point charge. Remember: uniform field lines do not diverge; radial field lines do.

    7. Electrostatic Induction and Forces |

Electrostatic induction occurs when a charged object is brought near a neutral conductor. The charges inside the conductor separate: opposite charges are attracted to the closer side, and like charges are repelled to the far side. This temporary separation can cause attraction between the charged object and the neutral conductor.

A classic demonstration is bringing a negatively charged rod close to a small piece of paper. The paper, though neutral, becomes induced with a positive charge on the near side and is attracted to the rod. You must be able to explain such observations using the movement of electrons.

If the conductor is earthed, the repelled charges can flow away, leaving the conductor with a net opposite charge. This principle is used in electrostatic painting and smoke precipitation.

    8. Applications of Static Electricity |

Static electricity has many useful applications, and the IGCSE AQA syllabus expects you to be familiar with several of them. In each case, you should be able to describe how electric fields and electrostatic forces are employed.

    • Electrostatic paint spraying: Paint droplets are given a charge as they leave the spray gun. The object to be painted is given the opposite charge. The electric field between them guides the charged droplets smoothly onto the surface, even around corners, reducing waste and giving an even coat.

    • Electrostatic precipitators: In chimneys, fine ash and dust particles pass through a charged grid and become charged. They are then attracted to oppositely charged collecting plates, removing pollutants from the smoke.

    • Photocopiers: A drum is charged, and light discharges certain areas to create an electrostatic image. Toner powder, which is charged, sticks to the charged areas and is then transferred onto paper and fused by heat.

    9. Dangers of Static Electricity and Safety |

Static charge build-up can be dangerous, especially where flammable gases or liquids are present. A sudden discharge can produce a spark, which may cause an explosion. You need to explain both the risk and the standard safety measures.

Refuelling aircraft and tankers: As fuel flows through pipes, friction can generate a large static charge. Earthing the vehicle with a conducting strap or using a bonding wire between the tanker and the fuel tank ensures charges flow safely to the ground, preventing sparks.

Electronic components: Static discharge can damage sensitive microchips. Workers handling such components wear antistatic wristbands that are earthed, and surfaces are kept conductive to dissipate any build-up.

In an exam, always link the danger to the possibility of a spark igniting fuel–air mixtures or damaging circuitry, and state earthing as the primary method of prevention.

    10. Key Points Summary for Exams |

Before you enter the exam hall, ensure you have memorised the following key points, as they often feature in structured questions and multiple-choice items.

    • Charge is due to a transfer of electrons; protons do not move.

    • Like charges repel, unlike charges attract.

    • An electric field is a region where a charge experiences a force.

    • Field lines point away from positive and towards negative charges. Arrow direction is the force on a positive test charge.

    • Closer field lines indicate a stronger field.

    • A uniform field exists between two parallel plates; radial field around a point charge.

    • Electrostatic induction is the separation of charges in a conductor due to a nearby charged object, causing attraction.

    • Earthing prevents static build-up by providing a path for charges to flow to the ground.

Keep your diagrams neat, always label the charge on objects, and use arrows correctly. With these concepts firmly grasped, you will be well equipped to handle any electric fields question in the IGCSE AQA Physics paper.

📚 AS Physics: Key Concept Comparisons | AS物理:知识点对比

In AS Physics, students often encounter pairs of concepts that are closely related yet distinct. Understanding these differences is crucial for solving problems, explaining physical phenomena, and avoiding common errors. This article compares several key concepts, clarifying their definitions, mathematical formulations, and practical applications.

    1. Scalar vs Vector |

A scalar quantity is completely described by its magnitude (size) and a unit. A vector quantity requires both magnitude and a direction to be fully specified.

Common scalars include mass (kg), time (s), temperature (K, °C), energy (J), speed (m/s), distance (m), and electric charge (C).

Examples of vectors are displacement, velocity, acceleration, force, momentum, electric field strength, and magnetic flux density.

When adding vectors, the direction must be accounted for. Two or more vectors can be combined using tip-to-tail drawing or by resolving into perpendicular components and then summing those components.

    2. Distance vs Displacement |

Distance is the total length of the path travelled by an object. It is a scalar quantity and is always positive.

Displacement is the change in position of the object measured in a straight line from the start point to the end point. Displacement is a vector and can be positive, negative, or zero depending on the chosen direction.

For example, if a runner completes one full lap on a 400 m circular track, the distance covered is 400 m, but the displacement is 0 m because the starting and finishing positions are identical.

Mathematically, displacement s can be expressed as s = sfinal – sinitial, whereas distance requires summing all segments of motion.

    3. Speed vs Velocity |

Speed is the rate at which distance is covered. It is a scalar: speed = distance / time. Average speed = total distance / total time.

Velocity is the rate of change of displacement. It is a vector: velocity = displacement / time. The magnitude of instantaneous velocity is instantaneous speed, but direction must also be given.

Uniform motion along a straight line at a constant speed has constant velocity only if the direction remains unchanged. When an object moves in a circle at constant speed, its velocity is continually changing because its direction changes.

The equations of motion for constant acceleration apply to velocity, not speed. For example, v = u + at gives the final velocity vector, provided direction is consistent.

    4. Mass vs Weight |

Mass is a measure of the amount of matter in an object. It is a scalar quantity, measured in kilograms (kg), and does not depend on location.

Weight is the gravitational force acting on an object. It is a vector, measured in newtons (N), and varies with the gravitational field strength g. Weight = mass × g (W = mg).

重量 = 质量 × g(W = mg)。

On Earth, g is approximately 9.81 N/kg, so a 1.0 kg mass has a weight of about 9.8 N downward. On the Moon, g ≈ 1.6 N/kg, so the same mass weighs only about 1.6 N, but its mass remains 1.0 kg.

When using an electronic balance, the reading is often given in kilograms because the scale measures weight and divides by an assumed g. In physics problem-solving, mass and weight should never be confused.

    5. Elastic Deformation vs Plastic Deformation |

Elastic deformation occurs when a material returns to its original shape and dimensions after the deforming force is removed. This behaviour is described by Hooke’s Law for small deformations: F = kx, where k is the spring constant and x is extension.

Plastic deformation takes place when the material is stretched beyond its elastic limit and does not return to its original shape. Permanent extension remains after the load is removed.

On a force–extension graph, the initial straight line obeys Hooke’s Law. The point where the line begins to curve is the limit of proportionality, and the elastic limit is very close to it. Beyond that, plastic behaviour dominates until fracture.

Examples: a spring stretches elastically for small loads; a copper wire pulled hard acquires a permanent kink – plastic deformation.

    6. Work vs Power |

Work done by a constant force is the product of the force component in the direction of displacement and the magnitude of the displacement: W = F d cos θ, where θ is the angle between force and displacement. Work is a scalar, measured in joules (J).

Power is the rate of doing work or transferring energy. Average power = work done / time taken, P = W / t. The unit is the watt (W), equivalent to J/s.

For an object moving at constant velocity v, the power developed by a force applied in the direction of motion is given by P = F v.

Work relates to the total energy transferred, while power indicates how quickly that energy is transferred. A machine that does 1000 J of work over 5 s has a power output of 200 W, whereas the same work done in 1 s corresponds to 1000 W.

    7. Kinetic Energy vs Gravitational Potential Energy |

Kinetic energy (KE) is the energy possessed by an object due to its motion. It is given by KE = ½mv², where m is mass and v is speed. KE is always positive and is a scalar.

Gravitational potential energy (GPE) is the energy stored in an object because of its position in a gravitational field. In a uniform field near Earth’s surface, the change in GPE is ΔGPE = mgΔh, where Δh is the vertical height change.

In many conversions, KE and GPE interchange. For a freely falling object with no air resistance, the loss in GPE equals the gain in KE: mgΔh = ½mv².

Unlike KE, GPE depends on a reference level. Only changes in GPE have physical significance. Both are scalar quantities, yet their origins are different: movement vs. position.

    8. Momentum vs Impulse |

Momentum p is the product of an object’s mass and its velocity: p = mv. It is a vector quantity with the unit kg m/s (or N·s). The direction of momentum is the same as the velocity.

Impulse is the product of the net force acting on an object and the time interval over which it acts: Impulse = Fnet Δt. Impulse is also a vector, and its unit is N s, which is equivalent to kg m/s.

The impulse–momentum theorem states that the impulse applied to an object equals its change in momentum: Fnet Δt = Δp = m(v₂ – v₁). This is Newton’s second law expressed in terms of momentum.

For example, a goalkeeper catching a fast-moving ball extends their arms forward to increase the stopping time Δt, thereby reducing the average force experienced (F = Δp / Δt).

    9. Series Circuits vs Parallel Circuits |

In a series circuit, components are connected end-to-end, so the same current flows through each component. In a parallel circuit, components are connected side-by-side across the same two points, so the potential difference (voltage) across each branch is the same.

For series resistors, total resistance Rtotal = R₁ + R₂ + R₃ + … . For parallel resistors, 1/Rtotal = 1/R₁ + 1/R₂ + 1/R₃ + … . The total resistance in parallel is always less than the smallest individual resistance.

In series, if one component fails (e.g. a bulb burns out), the entire circuit is broken and all components stop working. In parallel, the other branches can continue operating.

Power distribution also differs: in series, components with larger resistance dissipate more power (P = I²R); in parallel, components with smaller resistance dissipate more power (P = V²/R).

    10. Internal Resistance, EMF, and Terminal p.d. |

The electromotive force (EMF) of a source, denoted by E, is the energy supplied per unit charge by the source when no current is drawn. It is measured in volts (V). Terminal potential difference V is the voltage measured across the terminals when current is flowing.

Every real source has an internal resistance r. When a current I flows, some energy is lost inside the source as heat: E = V + Ir, or V = E – Ir. Thus terminal p.d. is always less than EMF when current is delivered.

    A graph of V against I gives a straight line with slope –r and y-intercept E. The short-circuit current is Isc = E / r, at which V = 0.

Understanding this distinction is essential for explaining why a battery’s measured voltage drops under heavy load and for designing circuits with appropriate matching.

    11. Transverse Waves vs Longitudinal Waves |

In a transverse wave, the oscillations (displacement of particles) are perpendicular to the direction of energy propagation. Examples include electromagnetic waves, water ripples, and secondary S-waves in earthquakes.

In a longitudinal wave, the oscillations are parallel to the direction of energy propagation. Sound waves and primary P-waves in earthquakes are longitudinal.

Transverse waves can exhibit polarization, whereas longitudinal waves cannot. Polarization is a property specific to transverse waves, where the oscillation direction is restricted to a single plane.

Both types can be described by wavelength, frequency, and amplitude, but the particle motion fundamentally distinguishes them. Graphical representations often use displacement–distance graphs that show compressions/rarefactions for longitudinal waves or crests/troughs for transverse waves.

    12. Photoelectric Effect vs Wave Theory Predictions |

The photoelectric effect is the emission of electrons from a metal surface when electromagnetic radiation of sufficiently high frequency shines on it. Key observations include a threshold frequency, instantaneous emission, and maximum kinetic energy of photoelectrons depending only on frequency, not intensity.

Classical wave theory predicts that increasing the intensity of light should increase the kinetic energy of emitted electrons, and that any frequency should cause emission if the intensity is high enough, with a time delay to accumulate energy. All three predictions conflict with experimental results.

Einstein’s photon model explains the effect: each photon carries energy E = hf. An electron absorbs one entire photon; if hf > φ (work function), the electron is emitted with KEmax = hf – φ. This accounts for the threshold frequency f₀ = φ / h and instantaneous emission.

Increasing intensity simply increases the number of photons per second, leading to more photoelectrons and a higher saturation current, but not higher kinetic energy per electron.

    📚 Mastering Light Interference for A-Level Physics | A-Level

Interference of light is a cornerstone of wave optics and a perennial favourite in A-Level Physics examinations. From the classic Young’s double-slit experiment to the colourful patterns in soap bubbles, this topic tests both your conceptual grasp of superposition and your ability to apply mathematical relationships with precision. In this article, we will systematically unpack every key idea — coherence, path difference, fringe spacing, phase change on reflection, and thin-film interference — so you can approach any exam question with confidence.

    1. What Is Interference? |

Interference occurs when two or more waves overlap in the same region of space. The resultant displacement at any point is the vector sum of the individual displacements — this is the principle of superposition. In the context of light, constructive interference yields bright fringes where the waves arrive in phase, while destructive interference produces dark fringes where the waves arrive exactly out of phase.

    2. Coherence and Conditions for Stable Interference |

For a stable interference pattern to be observed, the two light sources must be coherent. Coherence means that the waves maintain a constant phase difference over time and have the same frequency. In practice, achieving coherence with light requires splitting a single source into two — for example, by using a double slit or a half-silvered mirror. Ordinary light bulbs emit short, uncorrelated wave trains, so they cannot produce sustained interference patterns unless made nearly monochromatic and spatially coherent.

    3. Young’s Double-Slit Experiment: The Iconic Setup |

Thomas Young’s 1801 experiment is the definitive demonstration of light’s wave nature. A monochromatic source illuminates a narrow single slit, which then acts as a point source to illuminate two closely spaced slits, S₁ and S₂. These two slits behave as coherent secondary sources. The overlapping waves interfere on a distant screen, producing a series of equally spaced bright and dark fringes parallel to the slits.

    4. Path Difference and Bright/Dark Conditions |

At any point P on the screen, the waves from S₁ and S₂ travel slightly different distances. This path difference determines the phase relationship. If the path difference is an integer multiple of the wavelength (mλ, where m = 0, 1, 2, …), the waves reinforce — bright fringe. If the path difference is a half-integer multiple ((m + ½)λ), they cancel — dark fringe. For small angles, the path difference can be approximated as d sin θ, where d is the slit separation and θ is the angle from the central axis.

    5. Fringe Spacing Formula: x = λD / a | 条纹间距公式:x = λD / a

The distance between adjacent bright (or dark) fringes, called the fringe separation Δx, is given by a remarkably simple formula:

    Δx = λD / a

where λ is the wavelength, D is the distance from the slits to the screen, and a is the slit separation (often labelled d in some textbooks). This formula assumes small angles, so tan θ ≈ sin θ ≈ θ in radians. It tells us that increasing wavelength or screen distance widens the fringes, while increasing slit separation narrows them.

    相邻亮纹(或暗纹)的间距,即条纹间距 Δx,由以下简洁公式给出:

    Δx = λD / a

    其中 λ 为波长,D 为双缝到屏幕的距离,a 为缝间距离(某些教材用字母 d)。该公式建立在角度很小的前提下,此时 tan θ ≈ sin θ ≈ θ(弧度)。它告诉我们,增大波长或屏距会使条纹变宽,而增大缝间距则使条纹变窄。

    6. Effect of White Light and Fringe Visibility | 白光效应与条纹可见度

If a monochromatic source is replaced by white light, the result is striking: the central fringe (m = 0) is white because all wavelengths constructively interfere at zero path difference. On either side, spectra appear with violet closest to the centre and red farthest out, because Δx is proportional to λ and red has a longer wavelength than violet. At higher orders, the colours overlap increasingly, washing out the pattern. The clarity of fringes — their visibility — also diminishes if the sources are not perfectly coherent or if the slit widths are too large.

    7. Introduction to Thin-Film Interference |

Thin-film interference is responsible for the brilliant colours of oil slicks, soap bubbles, and anti-reflection coatings. Light reflected from the top and bottom surfaces of a thin transparent film (thickness t) can interfere. The observed colour depends on the film thickness, the refractive index n of the film, and the angle of incidence. The key is that one of the reflected rays may undergo a phase change of π (equivalent to half a wavelength) if it reflects from a medium of higher refractive index.

    8. Phase Change on Reflection and Effective Path Difference |

When light travelling in a medium of lower refractive index reflects off a medium of higher refractive index (e.g., air-to-glass), the reflected wave suffers a phase change of π rad (180°). This is equivalent to adding or subtracting λ/2 in the optical path. No phase change occurs when reflecting from a lower-index medium (e.g., glass-to-air). For a film of refractive index n in air, the effective path difference between the two reflected rays (neglecting angle) is 2nt, plus any half-wavelength shift from reflections. The conditions for constructive or destructive interference thus become:

    Constructive: 2nt = (m + ½)λ (if one reflection has a phase change)
    Destructive: 2nt = mλ

    相消:2nt = mλ

    9. Air Wedge and Newton’s Rings |

An air wedge is formed between two slightly inclined glass plates. Monochromatic light reflected normally produces straight, parallel interference fringes of equal thickness. The fringe spacing allows measurement of the wedge angle or small displacements. Newton’s rings, on the other hand, arise from the air film between a plano-convex lens and a flat glass plate. Circular fringes form, with a dark central spot (due to the phase change at the lower surface). The radius of the mth dark ring is rₘ = √(mλR), where R is the lens’s radius of curvature.

    10. Practical Applications of Interference |

Interference is not just a textbook curiosity; it underpins many modern technologies. Anti-reflection coatings on lenses use destructive interference in a thin layer of precisely chosen thickness and refractive index to cancel reflected light. Interference filters transmit only a narrow band of wavelengths. Optical flats use interference to check the flatness of surfaces. In astronomy, interference-based devices (interferometers) can resolve fine details of stars by combining light from multiple telescopes.

    11. Common Mistakes and Exam Tips |

A frequent mistake is confusing the fringe spacing formula with the interference condition. Remember: Δx = λD / a gives the distance between adjacent brights on the screen; the condition d sin θ = mλ gives the angle for the mth bright fringe. Also, when dealing with thin films, always consider the refractive indices on both sides of each boundary to determine whether a π phase change occurs. Use ‘2nt’ as the optical path difference, and never forget to check if the ‘½λ’ shift is needed. In exams, if a graph of fringe spacing versus D is drawn, the gradient equals λ / a, a useful trick for experimental analysis.

    12. Quick Summary of the Interference Topic |

Let’s wrap up. Interference of light relies on coherent sources. Young’s double slits create a measurable, equally spaced fringe pattern governed by Δx = λD / a with d sin θ = mλ for bright fringes. White light produces a white central fringe flanked by spectra. Thin-film interference depends on film thickness, refractive index, and any phase changes at boundaries, giving the condition 2nt = (m + ½)λ for bright reflection when one reflection flips phase. Air wedges and Newton’s rings are classic experimental examples. Master these core ideas, practise applying the formulas in varied contexts, and interference will become one of your strongest topics.

📚 Refraction of Light for IGCSE WJEC Physics | IGCSE WJEC

Refraction of light is a core topic in the IGCSE WJEC Physics syllabus, explaining how light changes direction when it passes from one transparent medium to another. Understanding refraction is essential not only for solving examination problems involving Snell’s law and critical angle calculations but also for grasping real-world applications like lenses, optical fibres, and prisms. This article provides a thorough breakdown of every key concept, equation, practical skill, and common pitfall you will encounter in your studies and exams.

    1. What is Refraction? |

Refraction is the bending of light as it travels from one transparent medium to another, caused by a change in speed. When light enters a denser medium (e.g. from air to glass), it slows down and bends towards the normal. When it enters a less dense medium, it speeds up and bends away from the normal. The normal is an imaginary line perpendicular to the boundary at the point of incidence.

If the light hits the boundary along the normal (angle of incidence i = 0°), it passes straight through without bending. The angle of refraction r is also 0° in this special case.

    2. Refractive Index and Snell’s Law |

The refractive index (n) of a medium measures how much the speed of light is reduced inside it compared to its speed in a vacuum. The absolute refractive index is given by n = c/v, where c is the speed of light in a vacuum (3.00 × 10⁸ m/s) and v is the speed of light in the medium. A higher refractive index means the medium is optically denser, and light travels more slowly in it.

Snell’s law relates the angles of incidence and refraction to the refractive indices of the two media. For a boundary between medium 1 and medium 2, the law is expressed as:

n₁ sin θ₁ = n₂ sin θ₂

If the first medium is air (n₁ ≈ 1), the formula simplifies to:

    如果第一种介质是空气(n₁ ≈ 1),公式简化为:

    n = sin i / sin r

Here i is the angle of incidence in air, and r is the angle of refraction in the material. In WJEC exams, you will often be asked to calculate the refractive index using this simplified form, or to find an unknown angle. Remember to use the angles measured from the normal, not from the surface.

    3. Light Speed and Optical Density |

Optical density is not the same as physical density, though they often correlate. A medium is optically denser if it has a higher refractive index. For example, glass (n ≈ 1.5) is optically denser than water (n ≈ 1.33), even though some plastics may be physically less dense than water. When light moves from an optically less dense medium to a denser one, it bends toward the normal; the opposite occurs when moving from denser to less dense.

In IGCSE WJEC, you must be able to predict the direction of bending based on refractive index comparisons. A classic exam question asks: “Draw the path of a light ray entering a glass block from air and then emerging back into air.” The emergent ray is parallel to the incident ray but laterally displaced. This displacement increases with angle of incidence and block thickness.

    4. Critical Angle and Total Internal Reflection |

Total internal reflection (TIR) occurs when light travelling in a denser medium hits a boundary with a less dense medium at an angle greater than the critical angle c. At the critical angle, the angle of refraction is 90°. For angles larger than c, all light is reflected internally, and no light escapes into the second medium. TIR can only happen when light goes from a denser to a less dense medium.

The relationship between critical angle and refractive index is:

    sin c = 1/n

where n is the refractive index of the denser medium relative to the rarer one (usually air). For glass with n = 1.5, c = sin⁻¹(1/1.5) ≈ 42°. For water (n = 1.33), c ≈ 48.6°. You must be able to calculate c from n and vice versa, and explain why TIR is useful in prisms and optical fibres.

    5. Applications: Optical Fibres |

Optical fibres use total internal reflection to transmit light signals over long distances with minimal loss. A typical fibre consists of a high-refractive-index core surrounded by a lower-refractive-index cladding. Light is launched into the core at an angle greater than the core–cladding critical angle, so it zigzags down the fibre, repeatedly undergoing TIR. The cladding also protects the core and prevents signal leakage.

WJEC questions often ask you to label the core and cladding, explain why the cladding is necessary, and discuss the advantages of optical fibres over copper cables: higher bandwidth, less signal degradation, immunity to electromagnetic interference, and greater security. You should also know that if the fibre is bent too sharply, the angle of incidence may fall below the critical angle, causing light to escape.

    6. Dispersion and Prisms |

Dispersion is the splitting of white light into its constituent colours (spectrum) because each colour has a slightly different speed in a medium, and therefore a slightly different refractive index. In a glass prism, violet light is refracted most and red light least. This occurs because violet light travels more slowly in glass than red light, so it experiences a larger change in direction.

The order of colours in the visible spectrum from least to most refracted is: Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet (ROYGBIV). Rainbows are a natural example of dispersion caused by water droplets. In an exam, you may be asked to draw and label the spectrum produced by a triangular prism and explain why the colours separate.

    7. Refraction in Lenses |

Converging (convex) lenses are thicker in the middle and bring parallel light rays to a focus. Diverging (concave) lenses are thinner in the middle and spread parallel rays outwards. Both effects rely on refraction at the two curved surfaces. In WJEC Physics, you need to understand the terms principal focus, focal length, and optical centre, and construct ray diagrams for real and virtual images.

For a converging lens, a real, inverted image is formed when the object is beyond the focal point. When the object is within the focal point, a virtual, upright, magnified image appears on the same side as the object — this is the principle of a magnifying glass. The lens formula 1/f = 1/u + 1/v and magnification m = v/u are not always required at IGCSE but may appear in extension questions; check your specification.

    8. WJEC Required Practical: Investigating Refraction | WJEC

The typical practical involves tracing light rays through a glass or Perspex block. You will place the block on a sheet of paper, shine a narrow ray of light from a ray box at an angle, mark the incident and emergent rays, remove the block, and draw the path through the block. By measuring angles of incidence and refraction, you can calculate the refractive index using Snell’s law.

You should take multiple readings for different angles (e.g. 10°, 20°, 30°, up to 80°), plot sin i vs sin r, and find the gradient as the refractive index. Common sources of error include inaccurate marking of ray paths, thick pencil lines, and not aligning the protractor correctly. Always measure angles from the normal. In WJEC exams, you might be asked to describe the procedure, identify variables, and suggest improvements such as repeating each measurement and averaging, or using a narrower ray.

    9. Common Misconceptions and Exam Tips |

One frequent mistake is confusing the angle of incidence with the angle between the ray and the surface. Always use the angle to the normal. Another is thinking that refraction occurs because light changes wavelength — it actually happens because of a change in speed. The frequency stays constant; only wavelength and speed alter. Also, many students forget that TIR requires light to travel from denser to less dense medium; a question might ask why a ray entering glass from air never undergoes TIR inside the glass.

In calculations, always check that your calculator is in degrees mode. Show all working clearly: write Snell’s law, substitute values, and rearrange before calculating. When drawing ray diagrams for refraction or TIR, use a ruler, add arrows, and label the normal. For TIR diagrams, show the reflected ray’s angle equal to the incident angle. In WJEC exams, command words like “explain” require a step-by-step account of the physics, not just a definition.

    10. Summary and Key Equations |

The key principles of refraction are summarised in the table below. In your revision, focus on understanding the physical reasons behind each phenomenon, practising calculations, and mastering ray diagrams. Refraction is a topic that links directly to waves, light, and telecommunications, making it a highly examinable and rewarding part of the WJEC Physics syllabus.

This article collects a set of classic mistake-prone problems, each accompanied by a detailed breakdown of the common error and the correct line of reasoning. Working through these examples will help you sharpen your exam technique and avoid costly slip-ups.

    1. Kinematics: Sign Conventions in Vertical Throw from a Moving Object |

A ball is thrown vertically upwards at 15 m/s from a hot‑air balloon that is ascending at 3 m/s. The balloon is 80 m above the ground at the instant of release. Taking upwards as positive, find the total time until the ball hits the ground. (g = 9.8 m/s²)

(g = 9.8 m/s²)

Common mistake: Students often set the initial velocity u to +15 m/s or even 0 m/s, forgetting that the ball inherits the balloon’s upward velocity. Another frequent error is taking the displacement s as +80 m because the starting point is above the ground.

    Correct approach: The ball’s initial velocity relative to the ground is u = +15 + 3 = +18 m/s. Since it ends at the ground 80 m below the launch point, the displacement is s = –80 m. The acceleration is a = –9.8 m/s². Use s = ut + ½ at²:

加速度 a = –9.8 m/s²。应用 s = ut + ½ at²:

    –80 = 18t + ½ (–9.8)t²

Solve the quadratic; discard the negative root to obtain t ≈ 5.8 s. Always assign directions consistently to the vector quantities s, u and a.

    2. Newton’s Laws: Tension in Connected Bodies on an Incline |

A block of mass 4.0 kg on a smooth slope inclined at 30° is connected by a light inextensible string over a frictionless pulley to a hanging mass of 3.0 kg. Determine the tension in the string.

Common mistake: Assuming the tension equals the weight of the hanging mass (29.4 N) or the component of the weight of the block down the slope (19.6 N). Many candidates also forget that both bodies share the same acceleration magnitude.

Correct approach: Write two equations of motion. For the hanging mass (downwards positive): 3g – T = 3a (1). For the block on the slope (up the slope positive): T – 4g sin30° = 4a (2). Adding (1) and (2) eliminates T, giving 3g – 4g sin30° = 7a. Solve for a and then substitute back to find T ≈ 23.5 N. The tension is never equal to an isolated weight unless the system is in equilibrium.

    3. Work and Energy: Conservation with Non‑Conservative Forces |

A 2.0 kg block slides down a curved track from rest at a height of 5.0 m. It reaches the bottom with a speed of 8.0 m/s. Calculate the work done against friction during the descent.

Common mistake: Ignoring friction and equating the loss in gravitational potential energy to the gain in kinetic energy, then concluding that the speed should be √(2gh) ≈ 9.9 m/s. The mistake is using mgh = ½ mv² when friction is present.

    Correct approach: The work–energy principle for a non‑conservative system: mgh + Wfriction = ½ mv², where Wfriction is negative work done by friction. Rearranging: work done against friction = mgh – ½ mv² = (2.0 × 9.8 × 5.0) – (½ × 2.0 × 8.0²) = 98 – 64 = 34 J. Always account for dissipative forces when they are mentioned or implied.

    4. Circular Motion: The Frictionless Banked Curve |

A car of mass 1200 kg travels around a frictionless circular bend of radius 80 m that is banked at an angle of 20° to the horizontal. Determine the speed at which the car can negotiate the bend without relying on lateral friction.

Common mistake: Many learners resolve the normal reaction and then incorrectly set the vertical component equal to the weight, and the horizontal component equal to the centripetal force, but get the angle confused. Others try to use mg sinθ as the centripetal force.

    Correct approach: The free‑body diagram shows the normal reaction R inclined at angle θ. Resolving vertically: R cosθ = mg. Horizontally: R sinθ = mv²/r. Dividing the two equations eliminates R and mass: tanθ = v²/(rg). Hence v = √(rg tanθ) = √(80 × 9.8 × tan20°) ≈ √(784 × 0.364) ≈ 16.9 m/s. The safe speed is mass‑independent.

    5. Electric Fields: Distinguishing Field Strength and Potential |

Two point charges: Q₁ = +4.0 μC at x = 0 and Q₂ = –2.0 μC at x = 0.60 m. Find the position along the x‑axis where the electric field strength is zero, and another location where the electric potential is zero.

Common mistake: Believing that zero field and zero potential occur at the same point. Students often add the potentials algebraically to find zero field, or vice versa. They also forget that potential is a scalar while field is a vector.

Correct approach: For zero electric field, the vectors due to Q₁ and Q₂ must be equal in magnitude and opposite in direction. This occurs at a point outside the segment joining the charges, closer to the smaller charge: let distance from Q₂ be d, then k × 4.0/(0.60+d)² = k × 2.0/d² → d ≈ 1.46 m, so x = 0.60+1.46 = 2.06 m from origin. For zero potential, the algebraic sum of kQ/r terms is zero: 4.0/x + (–2.0)/(0.60–x) = 0 → x = 0.40 m. The two points are entirely different.

    6. DC Circuits: The Loaded Potential Divider |

A potential divider consists of a 9.0 V battery and two fixed resistors: 600 Ω and 400 Ω in series. A voltmeter of resistance 800 Ω is connected across the 400 Ω resistor. Calculate the voltmeter reading.

Common mistake: Using the unloaded potential divider formula Vout = Vtotal × (400/(600+400)) = 3.6 V straight away. This ignores the fact that the voltmeter is in parallel with the 400 Ω resistor, lowering the effective resistance.

    Correct approach: The parallel combination of 400 Ω and 800 Ω gives an equivalent resistance Rp = (400×800)/(400+800) = 266.7 Ω. The total circuit resistance is 600 + 266.7 = 866.7 Ω. Circuit current I = 9.0/866.7 ≈ 0.01038 A. The voltmeter reads the p.d. across the parallel pair: V = I × Rp ≈ 0.01038 × 266.7 ≈ 2.77 V. Any measuring instrument with finite resistance affects the circuit being measured.

回路电流 I = 9.0/866.7 ≈ 0.01038 A。

    7. Waves: Stationary Waves in a Tube Closed at One End |

A cylindrical pipe of length 0.850 m is closed at one end. Determine the three lowest resonant frequencies when the speed of sound in air is 340 m/s.

Common mistake: Applying the formula for a tube open at both ends (fn = nv/(2L)), or incorrectly stating that the fundamental wavelength is 2L (which would be for an open‑open pipe). Remember that a closed end is a displacement node (pressure antinode) and an open end is a displacement antinode.

    Correct approach: For a pipe closed at one end, the standing wave has a node at the closed end and an antinode at the open end. The fundamental (1st harmonic) corresponds to L = λ₁/4 → λ₁ = 4L = 3.40 m, so f₁ = v/λ₁ = 340/3.40 = 100 Hz. Only odd harmonics exist: L = 3λ₃/4 → λ₃ = 4L/3, f₃ = 3v/(4L) = 300 Hz; f₅ = 5v/(4L) = 500 Hz. The frequencies are in the ratio 1 : 3 : 5.

    8. Superposition and Interference: Double‑Slit Fringe Separation |

In a Young’s double‑slit experiment using light of wavelength 600 nm, the slit separation is 0.50 mm and the screen is 1.80 m from the slits. Predict how the fringe separation changes if (a) the slit separation is doubled, and (b) the whole apparatus is immersed in water (refractive index 1.33).

Common mistake: Believing that increasing slit separation broadens the fringes. Many also forget that in water the wavelength becomes λ/n, and incorrectly apply the formula with the original wavelength.

Correct approach: The fringe separation Δy = λD / a, where a is the slit separation. (a) If a is doubled, Δy is halved—the fringes become narrower. (b) In water the wavelength λ’ = λ / n = 600/1.33 ≈ 451 nm. Since Δy is proportional to λ, the fringe separation decreases by a factor of 1.33. Always remember the inverse relationship with slit spacing and direct proportionality with wavelength.

(a) 若 a 加倍,Δy 减半——条纹变窄。

    9. Photoelectric Effect: Intensity, Frequency, and Stopping Potential |

Ultraviolet radiation of frequency 1.2 × 10¹⁵ Hz is incident on a metal surface with a work function of 3.0 eV. Calculate the stopping potential. Explain what happens to the stopping potential and the saturation photocurrent if the intensity of the radiation is doubled without changing the frequency.

Common mistake: Thinking that increasing intensity increases the kinetic energy of the emitted electrons, and therefore raises the stopping potential. Some also mix units by failing to convert electronvolts to joules or vice versa.

    Correct approach: Photon energy E = hf = 6.63×10⁻³⁴ × 1.2×10¹⁵ = 7.96×10⁻¹⁹ J = (7.96×10⁻¹⁹)/(1.60×10⁻¹⁹) ≈ 4.97 eV. Maximum kinetic energy Kmax = E – φ = 4.97 – 3.0 = 1.97 eV. Stopping potential Vs = Kmax/e = 1.97 V. Doubling intensity delivers more photons per second, so the photocurrent doubles, but each photon still has the same energy, so K

The January 2021 International A-Level Physics Unit 5 examiner report provides crucial insights into how students tackled application questions. Examiners noted that many candidates struggled not with recall of facts, but with applying core principles to unfamiliar contexts. This article distils the key techniques highlighted in the report, offering a structured approach to mastering application-style problems in thermodynamics, oscillations, radiation and cosmology.

    1. Decoding Command Words and Question Context |

Examiners stressed that many marks were lost simply because students did not address the specific command word. ‘State’, ‘describe’, ‘explain’ and ‘calculate’ require distinctly different responses. For example, an ‘explain’ question on the radiation emitted by a black body must include a step-by-step reasoning chain linking temperature, peak wavelength and Wien’s law, not just a statement of the law itself.

Before writing, underline the command word and identify the physics theme. Then, plan a response that matches the depth required. ‘Calculate’ demands a clear formula, substitution with units and a final answer to the correct number of significant figures.

The report also highlighted that application questions often embed the physics in a real-world scenario. Candidates must extract relevant data from a paragraph, diagram or graph, and ignore distractors. Practice by reading the stem twice: first to understand the scenario, second to highlight numerical values and keywords that indicate the relevant equation.

    2. Building a Robust Formula and Substitution Routine |

A recurring weakness was the misuse of equations. Many students wrote a correct formula but then substituted values without considering whether the quantities were in the correct form—for instance, using Celsius instead of kelvin in the ideal gas equation pV = nRT. Always convert temperature to kelvin, pressure to pascals, and volume to cubic metres before substitution.

Examiners recommend a structured five-step method: (1) state the equation in symbols, (2) list known quantities with units, (3) rearrange if necessary, (4) substitute values with units, (5) calculate and then check for reasonableness. This approach not only reduces arithmetic errors but also makes the examiner’s job easier, potentially earning method marks even if the final answer is wrong.

For example, in a thermal question requiring the specific heat capacity of a metal, students often forgot to include the mass of the calorimeter. The examiner’s report emphasised that all energy transfers must be accounted for: energy supplied = mcΔθ (metal) + mcΔθ (calorimeter) + heat losses. Write a complete energy balance equation before substituting numbers.

    3. Mastering Units, Prefixes and Conversions |

Unit conversion errors were among the most common reasons for lost marks in calculation questions. The report noted that candidates often confused kJ with J, cm² with m², and left answers in non-standard units. A reliable technique is to convert all quantities to base SI units at the very start of your working.

When using prefixes such as kilo (10³), mega (10⁶) or nano (10⁻⁹), write the equivalent value in standard form before substituting. For instance, 5.0 kJ becomes 5.0 × 10³ J. For area conversions, remember that 1 cm² = (10⁻² m)² = 10⁻⁴ m², not 10⁻² m². A simple table of common conversions can be helpful:

    Original SI Equivalent
    1 cm³ 1 × 10⁻⁶ m³
    1 litre 1 × 10⁻³ m³
    1 bar 1 × 10⁵ Pa
    1 g/cm³ 1000 kg/m³

In application questions on the kinetic theory of gases, students often had to convert molecular mass from grams per mole to kilograms per mole. Always check that the molar mass M in pV = nRT and ½m = ³⁄₂kT uses kilograms per mole.

    4. Significant Figures and Final Answer Presentation |

The examiner report strongly criticised the careless handling of significant figures. Many candidates gave answers to one or five significant figures when the data provided were to three. As a rule, your final answer should be given to the same number of significant figures as the least precise piece of data used in the calculation.

For multistep calculations, it is tempting to round intermediate steps, but this introduces errors. Keep intermediate values in your calculator to full precision, and only round the final answer. Show your unrounded answer first, then present the rounded version clearly underlined or boxed.

Examiners also noted that units must always accompany numerical answers unless the quantity is dimensionless. An answer of 3.5 for a frequency without ‘Hz’ or ‘s⁻¹’ will lose the unit mark. Train yourself to write the unit immediately after the magnitude; do not rely on separate answer lines.

    5. Constructing Clear Scientific Explanations |

Application questions demanding an ‘explain’ or ‘discuss’ often caught students out because their answers lacked logical flow. The report highlighted that simply stating ‘the pressure increases because the temperature increases’ is insufficient; you must link these through a recognised physical law, such as the ideal gas equation at constant volume: p ∝ T.

Use a structure of claim, evidence, reasoning. For a question on cosmic microwave background radiation, you might write: ‘The CMB has a perfect black-body spectrum (claim). Its temperature is 2.73 K (evidence). This is consistent with redshifted radiation from the hot early universe, supporting the Big Bang theory (reasoning).’ Practise linking macroscopic observations to microscopic or theoretical principles.

The report also suggested that diagrams can enhance explanations. A hand-drawn graph of Wien’s law showing two curves for different temperatures, with the peak shifting to shorter wavelengths, can convey understanding faster than words alone. Label axes, show shifts clearly, and refer to the diagram in your text.

    6. Graph Analysis and Drawing Skills |

Graph-based application questions were a major feature of the Unit 5 paper. Candidates frequently misinterpreted gradients and intercepts, or failed to use the graph to determine a required quantity. The examiner report underlined the need to first identify what variable is plotted on each axis and to recall the straight-line equation y = mx + c, matching experimental variables to theoretical expressions.

For example, in a question involving the photoelectric effect, a graph of maximum kinetic energy against frequency yields a gradient equal to Planck’s constant h. To find the work function, read the intercept on the frequency axis (or use the y-intercept). Always include error bars where given, and draw lines of best fit with a sharp pencil and ruler.

When plotting graphs, students lost marks for small but significant mistakes: forgetting to label axes with quantity and unit, choosing awkward scales that did not use the grid effectively, and drawing blobs instead of neat crosses for data points. A good practice tip is to check that your scale makes the gradient about 45 degrees to aid accurate determination.

    7. Tackling Derivation and Proof Questions |

Examiner feedback indicated that many candidates avoided derivation questions or attempted them without a clear plan. These questions test your ability to start from fundamental laws and logically arrive at a required result. A common example in Unit 5 is deriving the Doppler shift formula for sound or the redshift parameter z = Δλ/λ ≈ v/c for low speeds.

Always begin with the standard equations you are allowed. Show every algebraic step, justifying any simplifications. For instance, if deriving the expression for the acceleration of a body undergoing simple harmonic motion a = −ω²x, start with the defining equation x = A sin ωt, differentiate twice, and clearly state that a is proportional to −x. Partial credit is awarded for correct differentiation even if the final line is missing.

例如,若推导做简谐运动物体的加速度表达式 a = −ω²x,从定义式 x = A sin ωt 出发,微分两次,并清晰说明 a 与 −x 成正比。

The examiner report warned against skipping logical connectors such as ‘since’, ‘therefore’, and ‘assuming that…’. In a proof that the total energy of an oscillating mass-spring system is ½kA², you must first state the kinetic and potential energy expressions, then use the conservation of energy and the fact that at maximum amplitude v = 0 to show E_total = ½kA². Clarity of thought is more important than succinctness.

    8. Connecting Concepts Across the Syllabus |

High-scoring candidates excel at linking ideas from different topics. The January 2021 paper featured a question that required applying conservation of energy from mechanics to a thermal context involving latent heat and kinetic energy loss. Many failed to recognise that the kinetic energy lost by a braking spacecraft could be set equal to the heat required to melt a protective shield.

To prepare for such cross-topic applications, create concept maps linking the laws that appear repeatedly. The conservation laws (energy, momentum, charge) are universal. In cosmology, the expansion of the universe can be linked to Doppler shift and wave properties, while the stability of stars requires both gravitational physics and gas laws. Regularly practise questions that step outside the neat topic boxes.

    9. Precision in Practical-Based Application Questions |

Unit 5 application questions often simulate a practical investigation, requiring analysis of data, evaluation of uncertainties, and suggestions for improvement. The examiner report revealed that students were weak in calculating percentage uncertainties and in distinguishing between systematic and random errors.

When combining uncertainties, remember these rules: for addition or subtraction of quantities, absolute uncertainties add. For multiplication, division or powers, percentage uncertainties add. For example, if you measure the period T of a pendulum with a ±0.2 s uncertainty and count 20 oscillations, the uncertainty in the single period is 0.2/20 = 0.01 s.

Examiners advised that you comment on whether the experimental result supports a theoretical prediction by checking the overlap between the measured range (value ± uncertainty) and the accepted value. Simply stating “within experimental error” is insufficient; quote numerical ranges. Also, when suggesting improvements, be specific: instead of “use more accurate equipment”, say “use a digital thermometer with a resolution of 0.1 °C to reduce random error in temperature measurement”.

    10. Handling Cosmology and Astrophysics Data |

Application questions on Hubble’s law and the fate of the universe require comfort with large numbers, standard form, and logarithmic scaling. The January 2021 report noted that candidates often mismanaged powers of ten when calculating the age of the universe from t ≈ 1/H₀.

    A robust technique is to write H₀ in units of s⁻¹ first. If H₀ = 70 km s⁻¹ Mpc⁻¹, convert Mpc to m: 1 Mpc = 3.09 × 10²² m, so H₀ = (70 × 10³ m/s) / (3.09 × 10²² m) ≈ 2.27 × 10⁻¹⁸ s⁻¹. Then t = 1 / (2.27 × 10⁻¹⁸) ≈ 4.4 × 10¹⁷ s, which converts to about 14 billion years. Practice these unit conversions repetitively until they become automatic.

When interpreting graphs of redshift against distance, remember that the gradient gives H₀. A straight line through the origin implies a uniform expansion. If data points deviate at high redshifts, that may indicate the expansion is accelerating—the examiner report emphasised the need to link such deviations to dark energy and the cosmological constant.

    11. Oscillations: Translating Between Graphs and Equations |

In simple harmonic motion application questions, students were often given a displacement–time graph and asked to sketch velocity–time or acceleration–time graphs. The most common mistake was incorrect phase relationship. Remember, for x = x₀ sin ωt, v = dx/dt = ωx₀ cos ωt leads x by π/2; a = −ω²x is in antiphase with x.

记住,对于 x = x₀ sin ωt,v = dx/dt = ωx₀ cos ωt 超前 x π/2;a = −ω²x 与 x 反相。

The examiner report suggested using a table of t, x, v, a at key points (0, T/4, T/2, 3T/4, T) to sketch accurate graphs. For a mass-spring system, the energy-time graph (kinetic and potential) should show two curves that sum to a constant value, with each at double the frequency of displacement.

Damping and resonance questions also featured. When explaining how resonance occurs, always mention the driving frequency matching the natural frequency, leading to maximum amplitude. Candidates lost marks for not mentioning that damping reduces the peak amplitude and broadens the resonance curve.

    12. Summary of Examiner-Recommended Strategies |

To conclude, the January 2021 report consistently advised students to approach application questions systematically: read with care, convert units early, write equations in symbols first, show complete working, and always ask whether the final answer makes physical sense. For explanations, use precise terminology and a logical chain.

Time management was also noted: application questions often appear at the end of the paper and can be time-consuming. Practise under timed conditions, and if stuck on a calculation, move on and return later. The examiner’s key message is that application is a skill that improves with deliberate practice, not just content revision.

    1. What is an Electric Field? |

An electric field is a region of space surrounding an electric charge in which another charge will experience an electric force.

The field is invisible, but we can represent it using lines of force (field lines).

A charged particle creates an electric field that extends out into the space around it. If you place a second charge in this field, it feels a push or a pull.

    2. Electric Field Lines | 电场线

Electric field lines show the direction and strength of an electric field. They always point away from positive charges and towards negative charges.

The closer (denser) the lines, the stronger the electric field in that region.

Field lines never cross each other. If they did, it would mean two different directions of force at the same point, which is impossible.

    3. Field Patterns for Point Charges |

For an isolated positive point charge, the field lines radiate outward uniformly in all directions, like the spokes of a wheel.

For an isolated negative point charge, the field lines point inward towards the charge from all directions.

When a positive and a negative charge are placed near each other, the field lines start on the positive charge and end on the negative charge, curving to form a dipole pattern.

Between two like charges (both positive or both negative), the field lines repel each other, creating a neutral point in the middle where the field is zero.

    4. Field Between Parallel Plates |

When two parallel conducting plates are connected to a battery, one plate becomes positively charged and the other negatively charged. The electric field between them is uniform – the field lines are straight, parallel, and equally spaced.

The uniform field means that a charge placed anywhere between the plates experiences the same force in the same direction (ignoring edge effects).

The field direction is from the positive plate to the negative plate.

    5. Electric Field Strength |

Electric field strength (E) at a point is defined as the force (F) per unit positive charge (q) placed at that point:

    某点的电场强度(E)定义为该点处单位正电荷(q)所受的力(F):

    E = F / q

The unit of electric field strength is newton per coulomb (N C⁻¹). It can also be expressed in volts per metre (V m⁻¹).

This is a vector quantity – it has both magnitude and direction. The direction is that of the force on a positive test charge.

    6. Uniform Fields and E = V / d | 均匀电场与 E = V / d

For a uniform electric field set up between two parallel plates, the field strength is also related to the potential difference (V) between the plates and their separation (d):

    对于平行板之间的均匀电场,场强还与两板间的电势差(V)和间距(d)有关:

    E = V / d

Here V is the voltage applied across the plates, and d is the perpendicular distance between them. A smaller distance or larger voltage gives a stronger field.

This equation is very useful when analysing charged particles moving between plates, such as in an electron beam deflection.

    7. Forces on Charges in Electric Fields |

When a charge q is placed in an electric field of strength E, it experiences a force given by:

    当电荷 q 放在电场强度为 E 的电场中时,它受到的力为:

    F = q E

A positive charge feels a force in the direction of the field; a negative charge feels a force opposite to the field direction.

The magnitude of the force depends on the amount of charge and the strength of the field. This explains why a charged particle accelerates between plates.

    8. Conductors, Insulators and Electrostatic Induction |

In a conductor, electric charges (usually electrons) can move freely. In an insulator, charges cannot move easily.

Electrostatic induction occurs when a charged object is brought near a conductor, causing the charges in the conductor to separate without physical contact. For example, a negatively charged rod brought near a neutral metal sphere will repel electrons in the sphere to the far side, leaving the near side positively charged.

If the conductor is then earthed (connected to the ground), electrons can flow away or towards it, leaving the conductor with a net charge. This is charging by induction.

    9. Uses and Dangers of Static Electricity |

Static electricity has many practical applications, such as in electrostatic paint spraying, photocopiers, and dust precipitators. In each case, charged particles are attracted to an oppositely charged surface, ensuring even coating or removal of pollutants.

However, static charge buildup can be dangerous. A spark from a charged person or object can ignite flammable vapours, for instance at petrol stations. Lightning is a large-scale natural spark caused by charge separation in clouds.

To prevent dangers, we use earthing (grounding) straps, antistatic materials, and bonding during refuelling.

    10. Van de Graaff Generator |

A Van de Graaff generator uses a moving belt to transfer charge to a large metal dome, building up a very high voltage. The electric field around the dome becomes strong enough to cause spark discharges and make hair stand on end, demonstrating the repulsion between like charges.

The dome becomes positively charged (or negatively depending on the design), and the strong electric field can ionise air, leading to a visible spark when a grounded object is brought close.

📚 Simple Harmonic Motion for IGCSE OCR Physics | IGCSE OCR

Simple harmonic motion (SHM) is a fundamental type of oscillation that appears frequently in the IGCSE OCR Physics syllabus. From a swinging pendulum to a mass bobbing on a spring, SHM helps us understand how periodic motion works, and it links directly to wave behaviour. This revision guide breaks down all the key concepts, equations and graphs you need to master for your exam, with clear explanations in both English and Chinese.

    1. What is Simple Harmonic Motion? |

Simple harmonic motion is defined as an oscillation in which the acceleration of the object is directly proportional to its displacement from a fixed equilibrium position and is always directed towards that equilibrium point. In other words, the further the object moves away from equilibrium, the greater the restoring force (and acceleration) that pulls it back.

The condition for SHM can be written as a ∝ −x, where a is acceleration, x is displacement, and the minus sign indicates that acceleration is always opposite to displacement. This proportionality is the hallmark of a simple harmonic oscillator.

Many real systems approximate SHM for small displacements, such as a simple pendulum swinging through a small angle or a mass on a spring moving within its elastic limit.

    2. Key Terms: Amplitude, Period, Frequency |

To describe SHM accurately, you need to be familiar with three essential terms:

    • Amplitude (A) – the maximum displacement from the equilibrium position. It is measured in metres (m).
    • Period (T) – the time taken for one complete oscillation or cycle. Measured in seconds (s).
    • Frequency (f) – the number of complete oscillations per second. Measured in hertz (Hz).

The relationship between period and frequency is f = 1/T and T = 1/f. These equations are useful when analysing graphs or experimental data.

In OCR IGCSE exams, you may be asked to define these terms or calculate them from given information. Always remember to include correct units.

    1. Nuclear Structure and Notation |

The nucleus contains protons and neutrons (collectively nucleones). The atomic number Z equals the number of protons and defines the element. The mass number A = Z + N (neutron number). Isotopes have the same Z but different A. Nuclide notation places A as a superscript and Z as a subscript before the element symbol, e.g., ¹⁴₆C for carbon-14 or ²³⁸₉₂U for uranium-238. Unstable nuclides lie outside the stability band and undergo radioactive decay to become more stable.

质量数 A = Z + N(中子数)。

    2. Types of Radiation: Alpha, Beta, Gamma |

Three main types of radiation are emitted: alpha (α), beta (β), and gamma (γ). Alpha particles are helium-4 nuclei (⁴₂He), carrying a +2e charge. They have the highest ionising power but the lowest penetration (stopped by paper or a few cm of air). Beta particles are high-speed electrons (β⁻) or positrons (β⁺). Beta-minus decay emits an electron (⁰₋₁e); beta-plus decay emits a positron (⁰₊₁e). Beta radiation has moderate ionising ability and can be stopped by a few mm of aluminium. Gamma radiation is electromagnetic with no mass or charge. It has the highest penetrating power (requires thick lead or concrete) and the lowest ionising ability.

    Property Alpha (α) Beta (β⁻/β⁺) Gamma (γ)
Nature Helium nucleus Electron/positron EM radiation
    Charge +2e −1e / +1e 0
Penetration Low (paper) Medium (3 mm Al) High (thick Pb)
Ionising ability Very high Medium Very low

    3. Decay Equations and Conservation Laws |

In all decay equations, the total mass number (A) and total atomic number (Z) are conserved. For alpha decay: ᴬ Z X → ᴬ⁻⁴ Z₋₂ Y + ⁴₂He. Example: ²²⁶₈₈Ra → ²²²₈₆Rn + ⁴₂He. Beta-minus decay converts a neutron into a proton, emitting an electron and an antineutrino: ¹⁴₆C → ¹⁴₇N + ⁰
