AP统计学 Statistics
AP Statistics
AP Statistics gives high school students the opportunity to study a one-semester, introductory, non-calculus-based college statistics course through the Advanced Placement Program. The course and exam provide a college-level experience while still in secondary school.
Developed by a committee of statistics and mathematics educators, the AP Statistics curriculum and exam mirror what is taught in a typical introductory college statistics class. The exam is carefully designed to measure students’ understanding of fundamental statistical concepts and their ability to apply appropriate skills.
At colleges and universities, statistics enrollments rival those of calculus. According to a 2002 Chronicle of Higher Education report, statistics course enrollment jumped 45% between 1990 and 2000—clear evidence of the field’s growing importance. An introductory statistics course, much like AP Statistics, is a common requirement for majors in the social sciences, health sciences, and business. Each semester, roughly 236,000 students sign up for introductory statistics through a mathematics or statistics department, and many more take similar courses in other departments. For science, engineering, and mathematics majors, AP Statistics serves as strong preparation for their later, calculus-based statistics courses.
The central aim of AP Statistics is to introduce students to the key concepts and methods for collecting, analyzing, and drawing conclusions from data. The course revolves around four broad themes:
- Exploring Data: Observing patterns and recognizing deviations from those patterns
2. Sampling and Experimentation: Designing and executing studies
3. Anticipating Patterns: Investigating random behavior through probability and simulation
4. Statistical Inference: Making estimates about populations and testing hypotheses
Students who successfully complete the course and perform well on the exam may earn credit, advanced placement, or both for a one-semester college introductory statistics course. This does not mean that the high school course must be only one semester long; schools should tailor the course length to their students’ needs. Like some other AP subjects, AP Statistics can be effectively taught in a single semester, across two trimesters, or over a full year. Most schools, however, choose to offer it as a year-long course.
