AP United States History
The Advanced Placement (AP) program offers an AP United States History course and exam for motivated high school students who want a learning experience equivalent to an introductory college course in U.S. history. As detailed in this book, the AP U.S. History Exam assumes that students have completed at least a year of college-level preparation in the subject.
Inclusion of any material in the course description and exam does not mean the College Board or ETS endorses the content, ideas, or values expressed. The content has been carefully selected and is regularly revised by a committee of high school and university history educators—the AP U.S. History Development Committee. It reflects the substance of an introductory college survey in U.S. history, based on feedback from over 100 colleges and universities. The exam measures the skills and knowledge typically acquired in such a course.
The AP U.S. History course is designed to build both analytical skills and factual knowledge, enabling students to engage critically with historical problems and materials. Its demands match those of a full-year college introductory course, laying a foundation for intermediate and advanced study. Students learn to assess historical sources—their relevance, reliability, and significance—and to weigh different interpretations found in scholarly work. An AP U.S. History course therefore develops the ability to form conclusions from informed judgment and to present reasons and evidence clearly and persuasively in essay form.
