International Primary Curriculum Zhonghuang International Huangpu Primary School: International Small Class Teaching, A Combination Of Chinese And Western Curriculum System

International primary education has become a major talking point for families over the past few years. The right choice of school can significantly shape a child’s entire learning journey.

School background and development history

Zhonghuang International Huangpu Primary School started life in 2003 as the Foreign Language Experimental Primary School affiliated to CUHK. Located in Guangzhou’s Huangpu District within the Yigang Garden complex, the campus spreads across more than 10,000 square metres. Backed by the Zhongda Huangpu International Education Group, the school positions itself as a high-standard international institution blending Chinese and Western educational philosophies. Nearly twenty years on, it has grown into one of South China’s more influential private international primary schools.

Curriculum system and teaching features

The school runs a dual-curriculum model: it is an IB PYP candidate school, running in parallel with the International Primary Curriculum (IPC). At the same time, it follows China’s national curriculum standards closely. Class sizes are capped at 26 pupils, with a co-teaching approach where Chinese and international educators work side by side. Transdisciplinary themes are explored through the UOI framework, which spans six global themes and places a strong emphasis on collaboration and independent inquiry. Beyond the core programme, specialist courses such as Cambridge English, mathematics taught by foreign teachers, martial arts and golf are also offered, supporting multiple intelligences across the board.

Teachers and teaching models

Every member of the teaching team holds professional qualifications, and more than 80% have a master’s degree or higher. Chinese and foreign language teachers are on-site throughout the day, delivering an immersive bilingual programme. The school has also adopted an inquiry-based method known as Kuapule, which encourages pupils to learn through hands-on experience. All staff take part in international education training each year, keeping their practice fresh and aligned with global trends.

Campus facilities and learning environment

The campus houses standard classrooms, science labs, a library, art rooms and a multi-purpose gymnasium. Outdoor facilities include a football pitch, a baseball field and golf practice areas to cater for a wide range of activities. Classrooms are fitted with smart teaching equipment, and digital management systems create a safe, interactive learning environment.

Social Practice and International Exchange

True to its “education without walls” philosophy, the school organises regular community service, camp-based learning, and study trips both at home and abroad. Exchange partnerships have been established with institutions in Singapore, the United Kingdom and elsewhere, giving students the chance to deepen their cross-cultural understanding while overseas. Monthly social practice activities—such as museum visits or company tours—help pupils connect what they learn in class to real-world contexts.

Admissions requirements and training goals

Children aged six and above are eligible, with no household registration restrictions. Around 50 first-grade places are available each year. Admission involves an interview to assess a child’s overall abilities, and the school aims to nurture future talent with an international outlook, innovative thinking and a sense of social responsibility. Most graduates go on to well-regarded secondary schools at home and abroad; ongoing tracking shows their academic results and adaptability remain well above average.

In primary education, should international schools lean more towards passing on traditional culture, or should the focus be on building a global mindset? What do you think? I’d love to hear your thoughts.
