For instance, a specific brand of chocolate: if price rises by 10%, quantity demanded might fall by 25%, giving PED = 2.5. The second is Inelastic Demand: when PED < 1, the percentage change in quantity demanded is smaller than the percentage change in price. These goods are typically necessities or lack close substitutes. For example, petrol: even if price rises by 20%, due to commuting needs, quantity demanded might only fall by 5%, giving PED = 0.25.

This exists in perfectly competitive markets where all firms are price takers. The demand curve is a horizontal line. The fifth is Perfectly Inelastic Demand: when PED = 0, quantity demanded remains unchanged regardless of price changes. For example, life-saving medication: patients must buy it no matter how high the price. The demand curve is a vertical line.

The breadth of definition also matters: narrowly defined goods (e.g., a specific brand of trainers) are more elastic than broadly defined goods (e.g., all footwear) because the latter are harder to substitute.

The time period is also significant: in the short run, consumers have limited ability to adjust their consumption habits, so PED is lower; in the long run, consumers can find substitutes or change their lifestyle, so PED rises. For example, petrol demand is inelastic in the short run, but in the long run people can switch to public transport or purchase electric vehicles, increasing elasticity. Additionally, the proportion of income spent on the good matters: goods that take up a larger share of income tend to have higher PED.

Similarly, cinemas offer reduced ticket prices on weekdays (attracting price-elastic customers) while maintaining full prices at weekends (facing relatively price-inelastic customers). Understanding the relationship between PED and total revenue is foundational for pricing decisions by business managers and policymakers.

These three elasticities are defined entirely differently: PED measures own-price effects, XED measures substitute/complement price effects, and YED measures income effects.

Third, connect PED to broader economic concepts such as market structure, government tax policy (the incidence of indirect taxes depends on PED), subsidy allocation, and price controls. Finally, in essay questions always acknowledge real-world complexity: consumers are not perfectly rational, brand loyalty and habitual purchasing can make demand more inelastic than theory predicts, while the prevalence of the internet and price-comparison tools makes demand for many goods more elastic.
