📚 A-Level OCR Physics: Cosmology Key Points | A-Level OCR

Cosmology is a captivating branch of astrophysics that examines the origin, evolution, and large-scale structure of the Universe. In the OCR A-Level Physics specification, this topic brings together observational astronomy, wave phenomena such as the Doppler effect, and fundamental principles like Hubble’s law and the cosmic microwave background radiation. Understanding these concepts not only prepares you for the exam but also gives you a glimpse into how physicists unravel the history of the cosmos.

1. Astronomical Distances and Units |

In cosmology, vast distances require special units. The astronomical unit (AU) is the mean Earth–Sun distance, approximately 1.50 × 10¹¹ m. A light-year (ly) is the distance light travels in one year, about 9.46 × 10¹⁵ m. The parsec (pc) is defined via parallax and equals 3.09 × 10¹⁶ m, roughly 3.26 light-years.

Astronomers commonly use the parsec for stellar distances and the megaparsec (Mpc) for galaxy-scale distances, where 1 Mpc = 10⁶ pc. These units are essential when applying Hubble’s law, which relates recessional velocity to distance.

2. Parallax and the Parsec |

Stellar parallax is the apparent shift of a nearby star against distant background stars as Earth orbits the Sun. The parallax angle p (in arcseconds) is half the total angular shift observed over six months. The distance d in parsecs is given by the simple relation d = 1 / p.

d (pc) = 1 / p (arcsec)

A parsec is defined as the distance at which a star has a parallax angle of exactly one arcsecond. This corresponds to a distance of about 3.09 × 10¹⁶ m. Ground-based telescopes can measure parallax angles down to about 0.01″, but space missions like Gaia achieve microarcsecond precision, extending our distance ladder.

3. Standard Candles: Cepheid Variables |

Beyond the range of parallax, astronomers rely on standard candles—objects of known intrinsic luminosity. Cepheid variable stars are crucial: they pulsate radially with a well-defined period–luminosity relationship. Longer-period Cepheids are intrinsically brighter. By measuring the period and the apparent brightness, the distance can be determined using the inverse-square law.

Edwin Hubble used Cepheids in the Andromeda galaxy to prove that it was far outside the Milky Way, establishing that the Universe contains many galaxies. This paved the way for the discovery of cosmic expansion.

4. The Doppler Effect and Redshift |

When a light source moves relative to an observer, its wavelength shifts due to the Doppler effect. For a receding source
