For example, 3x + 2y – x + 5y simplifies to 2x + 7y. When multiplying powers, we add the indices: x² × x³ = x⁵. When dividing, subtract the indices: x⁵ ÷ x² = x³. Remember that any non-zero number to the power 0 equals 1: a⁰ = 1, a ≠ 0.
