1. Entrepreneurs and Stakeholders |

An entrepreneur is an individual who spots a business opportunity, takes the financial risk to start and run a new venture, and is often the driving force behind innovation. Stakeholders, on the other hand, are any individuals, groups or organisations that have an interest in or are affected by a business’s activities. While the entrepreneur is typically a stakeholder, the term ‘stakeholder’ also covers employees, customers, suppliers, the local community, the government, and even competitors in some contexts. The entrepreneur’s primary focus is on survival and profit, whereas each stakeholder group has its own objectives—employees may want job security, customers desire quality products, and the local community might prioritise environmental protection. Recognising this distinction helps you analyse conflicts of interest, which is a common exam theme.

2. Unlimited Liability and Limited Liability |

Unlimited liability means the owner is personally responsible for all business debts. If the business fails, creditors can claim the owner’s personal assets such as their house or car. This applies to sole traders and ordinary partnerships. Limited liability, in contrast, protects the owners (shareholders) so that they can only lose the money they have invested in the company. Their personal wealth is not at risk. This separation is a key advantage of incorporated businesses such as private and public limited companies. The table below summarises the core differences.

Feature Unlimited Liability Limited Liability
Risk to owner Personal assets can be seized Only investment amount is lost
Typical business forms Sole trader, partnership Private Ltd, Public Ltd (Plc)
Business name Must include owner’s name if not trading under own name Must end with ‘Ltd’ or ‘Plc’
Legal identity No separate legal identity Separate legal identity

3. Private Limited Company (Ltd) and Public Limited Company (Plc) |

Both Ltd and Plc are incorporated businesses offering limited liability, but they differ significantly in ownership and access to capital. A private limited company (Ltd) cannot sell shares to the general public; shares are typically held by friends, family or private investors and can only be transferred with the agreement of other shareholders. This keeps control tight but limits capital-raising ability. A public limited company (Plc) can offer shares to the public through a stock exchange, which means it can raise large amounts of capital, but it must meet stricter reporting requirements and faces the risk of a hostile takeover. In an exam, you might be asked to evaluate which form is more suitable for a growing business; mentioning the balance between control, finance and regulatory burden is key.

4. Horizontal and Vertical Integration |

Integration refers to a business joining with another firm, but the direction makes a big difference. Horizontal integration occurs when two businesses at the same stage of production in the same industry merge or take over each other. The main aim is to increase market share, reduce competition, and achieve economies of scale. Vertical integration happens when a business expands by taking over or merging with a firm at a different stage of production, either backwards (towards the supplier) or forwards (towards the customer). A backward vertical integration secures raw materials, while forward integration gives control over distribution outlets. These strategies have very different risks and benefits; for example, a horizontal takeover might be blocked by competition authorities, whereas vertical integration can create supply-chain efficiencies but may stretch management expertise.

5. Mass Marketing and Niche Marketing |

Mass marketing targets a very broad audience with a single product and a standardised marketing mix. The aim is to appeal to as many consumers as possible, often relying on high sales volume and low prices to achieve profitability. Coca-Cola’s classic marketing is a textbook example. Niche marketing, by contrast, focuses on a small, well-defined segment of the market that has unique needs. The marketing mix is tailored specifically to this group, and products are often sold at a premium price. A small artisan bakery specialising in gluten-free products operates in a niche. For WJEC exams, you should be able to compare the two in terms of risk, profit margins, competition, and the ability to build customer loyalty. A niche market can protect a small business from direct competition with large corporations, but it may limit growth potential.

6. Fixed Costs and Variable Costs |

Fixed costs are business expenses that do not change with the level of output in the short run. Examples include rent, insurance, and management salaries. Even if a factory produces nothing, these costs must still be paid. Variable costs, on the other hand, fluctuate directly with the level of production. Raw materials, packaging, and piece-rate labour are typical variable costs. Understanding this distinction is vital for calculating total costs and for break-even analysis. The break-even point can be shifted by changes in either fixed or variable costs; for instance, renting a cheaper premises reduces fixed costs and lowers the break-even output. The relationship is often expressed simply:

Total Costs = Fixed Costs + Variable Costs

7. Profit and Cash Flow |

Profit and cash flow are both vital, but they measure different things. Profit is the surplus after all expenses have been deducted from revenue over a period. It is calculated on an accrual basis, meaning sales are recorded when made, not necessarily when cash is received. Cash flow, however, tracks the actual movement of money into and out of a business. A business can be profitable on paper yet suffer a cash-flow crisis if customers delay payments or if cash is tied up in unsold inventory. A typical exam scenario presents a profitable business that cannot pay its bills, requiring you to explain why positive profit does not guarantee liquidity. Remember: profit = revenue – expenses, while net cash flow = total cash inflows – total cash outflows.

8. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and Herzberg’s Two-Factor Theory |

Maslow’s theory suggests that human needs are arranged in a hierarchy: physiological, safety, social, esteem, and self-actualisation. Lower-level needs must be substantially satisfied before an individual is motivated by higher needs. In a workplace, a secure job and fair pay satisfy basic needs, while recognition and personal growth address higher ones. Herzberg’s two-factor theory divides workplace factors into ‘hygiene factors’ (such as working conditions, salary, and company policies) that can cause dissatisfaction if inadequate, and ‘motivators’ (such as achievement, responsibility, and the work itself) that positively drive job satisfaction. A common error is to think Herzberg’s hygiene factors motivate; they only prevent dissatisfaction. When analysing employee motivation, using both models can strengthen your evaluation—Maslow explains the ‘what’ of motivation, while Herzberg explains the ‘how’ in a work setting.

9. Batch Production and Flow Production |

Batch production involves making a limited number of identical products, then switching the equipment or machine settings to produce a different batch. It is used when demand for each product is moderate and variety is needed—such as in bakeries, clothing manufacture, or pharmaceutical products. Flow production (often called mass or continuous production) produces a standardised product continuously on an assembly line, with high volumes and high automation. Car manufacturing is a classic example. Batch production offers flexibility and lower set-up costs per batch than producing small individual items, but suffers from ‘downtime’ between batches. Flow production enjoys very low unit costs and consistent quality, but is capital-intensive, inflexible, and can demotivate workers due to repetitive tasks. Evaluating which method to recommend depends on factors like market demand, product nature, and available finance—exactly the sort of judgement WJEC expects.

10. Primary Research and Secondary Research |

Primary research (field research) involves gathering brand-new data first-hand for a specific purpose. Methods include questionnaires, interviews, focus groups, and observation. It is up-to-date, directly relevant, and often more accurate, but it is time-consuming and expensive. Secondary research (desk research) uses data that already exists, such as government reports, market analyses, company websites, and internal sales records. It is quicker, cheaper, and provides a useful overview, but it may be outdated, not entirely relevant, or biased. A smart business usually combines both, using secondary research to understand the background and primary research to fill specific gaps. Exam questions frequently ask you to justify a choice of research method for a given scenario, so practise linking the advantages to the business context.
